Împrejurările divizării regatului lui Solomon
10 Roboam s-a dus la Şehem, pentru că tot Israelul venise la Şehem să-l facă rege. 2 Când Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, a auzit lucrul acesta, el se afla în Egipt, acolo unde fugise de regele Solomon. Ieroboam s-a întors din Egipt. 3 Au trimis să-l cheme, iar Ieroboam şi întregul Israel au venit şi i-au vorbit lui Roboam astfel:
4 – Tatăl tău a îngreunat jugul nostru. Acum, despovărează-ne de slujba aspră a tatălui tău şi de jugul cel greu pe care l-a pus peste noi şi-ţi vom sluji!
5 – Întoarceţi-vă la mine peste trei zile, le-a răspuns el.
Şi poporul a plecat. 6 Regele Roboam s-a sfătuit cu bătrânii care i-au slujit tatălui său, Solomon, în timpul vieţii acestuia, întrebându-i:
– Ce mă sfătuiţi să răspund acestui popor?
7 – Dacă vei fi bun cu poporul acesta şi îngăduitor, i-au răspuns ei, dacă le vei vorbi prin cuvinte plăcute, ei vor fi slujitorii tăi toată viaţa lor.
8 Însă Roboam nu a luat în seamă sfatul pe care i l-au dat bătrânii, ci a cerut şi sfatul tinerilor cu care a copilărit şi care-i slujeau. 9 El i-a întrebat:
– Ce mă sfătuiţi? Cum să răspund acestui popor care mi-a cerut să-l despovărez de jugul pe care tatăl meu l-a pus peste el?
10 Tinerii, care copilăriseră împreună cu el, i-au răspuns:
– Acestui popor, care ţi-a zis că tatăl tău i-a îngreunat jugul şi că tu trebuie să-l iei de peste el, să-i spui astfel: „Degetul meu cel mic este mai gros decât şoldurile tatălui meu! 11 Tatăl meu a pus un jug greu peste voi, dar eu voi adăuga mai mult la jugul vostru. Tatăl meu v-a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu gârbace[a]!“
12 Ieroboam, însoţit de tot poporul, a venit la Roboam a treia zi, după cum le poruncise regele când le zisese: „Întoarceţi-vă la mine peste trei zile!“ 13 Regele le-a răspuns aspru. Regele Roboam nu a luat în seamă sfatul dat de bătrâni 14 şi le-a vorbit potrivit sfatului dat de tineri:
– Tatăl meu v-a îngreunat jugul, dar eu voi adăuga mai mult la el! Tatăl meu v-a pedepsit cu bice, dar eu vă voi pedepsi cu gârbace!
15 Astfel regele nu a ascultat plângerea poporului, fiindcă această întorsătură a lucrurilor venea de la Dumnezeu, pentru ca Domnul să-Şi împlinească cuvântul pe care îl rostise cu privire Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, prin Ahia din Şilo. 16 Când toţi israeliţii au văzut că regele nu le-a ascultat plângerea, i-au răspuns astfel:
– Ce parte avem noi în David?
N-avem nici o moştenire în fiul lui Işai.
La corturile tale, Israel!
Vezi-ţi de casa ta, David!
Şi tot poporul Israel a plecat acasă. 17 Roboam însă a continuat să domnească peste israeliţii care locuiau în cetăţile lui Iuda. 18 Regele Roboam l-a trimis la ei pe Adoniram[b], cel care era mai mare peste oamenii de corvoadă, dar israeliţii l-au omorât împroşcându-l cu pietre. Atunci regele Roboam s-a grăbit să se suie în car ca să fugă la Ierusalim. 19 Aşa s-a răzvrătit Israel împotriva Casei lui David şi aşa a şi rămas până astăzi.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
10 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam(B) son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel(D) went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us,(E) but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(F) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer,(G) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(H) the advice the elders(I) gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God,(J) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.(K)
16 When all Israel(L) saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,(M)
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!
Look after your own house, David!”
So all the Israelites went home. 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[a](N) who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

3 And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam, saying,
4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 And he said unto them, Come again unto me after three days. And the people departed.
6 And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9 And he said unto them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, which have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us?
10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.
11 For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king bade, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14 And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add thereto: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 So the king hearkened not unto the people: for the cause was of God, that the Lord might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
