Rehoboam Rules
10 Then Rehoboam went to Shechem. All Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about it, he returned from Egypt. For Jeroboam had run to Egypt to get away from King Solomon. 3 And the people sent for him. Jeroboam and all Israel came to Rehoboam and said, 4 “Your father gave us a heavy load to carry. So now make our work easier than your father made us work. Do not let our load be as heavy as the one he put on us. And we will work for you.” 5 Rehoboam said to them, “Come to me again in three days.” So the people left.
6 Then King Rehoboam spoke with the leaders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive. He said, “Tell me, how do you think I should answer these people?” 7 They said to him, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and speak good words to them, they will be your servants forever.” 8 But Rehoboam would not listen to the wise words of the leaders. He spoke with the young men who grew up with him and served him. 9 He said to them, “Tell me, how do you think I should answer these people who have said to me, ‘Do not let our load be as heavy as the one your father put on us’?” 10 The young men who grew up with him said to him, “Say this to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our load heavy, but you make it easier for us.’ Tell them, ‘My little finger is bigger around than my father’s body! 11 My father gave you a heavy load. I will add to your load. My father punished you with whips. But I will punish you with scorpions.’”
12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had told them, saying, “Return to me on the third day.” 13 The king answered them with strong words. King Rehoboam did not listen to the wise words of the leaders. 14 Instead he listened to the words of the young men. And he said to them, “My father made your load heavy, but I will add to it. My father punished you with whips, but I will punish you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people. God made this happen so that He might make His Word come true which He spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 All Israel saw that the king did not listen to them. So the people said to the king, “What share do we have in David? We have no share in the son of Jesse. Every man to your tents, O Israel! Now look to your own house, David!” So all Israel left and went to their tents. 17 But Rehoboam ruled over the people of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent Hadoram, the man who made the people work. But the people of Israel killed him with stones. So King Rehoboam got on his war-wagon in a hurry, to go to Jerusalem. 19 Israel has been against the family of David to this day.

Israel Turns Against Rehoboam(A)
10 Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all the Israelites had gone to make him king. 2 Jeroboam son of Nebat was in Egypt, where he had ·gone to escape [fled] from King Solomon. When Jeroboam heard about Rehoboam being made king, he returned from Egypt. 3 After the people ·sent for [summoned; L sent and called for] him, he and the people went to Rehoboam and said to him, 4 “Your father ·forced us to work very hard [L made our yoke heavy]. Now, ·make it easier for us, and don’t make us work as he did [L lighten the hard labor and heavy yoke of your father]. Then we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people left.
6 King Rehoboam ·asked [consulted] the elders who had advised Solomon during his lifetime, “How do you ·think I should [advise/counsel me to] answer these people?”
7 They answered, “·Be kind [L If you are fair] to these people. If you please them and give them a ·kind [cordial] answer, they will serve you always.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected ·this advice [L the advice/counsel of the elders]. Instead, he ·asked [consulted] the young men who had grown up with him and who ·served as his advisers [served/attended him]. 9 Rehoboam asked them, “What is your ·advice [counsel]? How should we answer these people who said to me, ‘·Don’t make us work as hard as your father did’ [L Lighten the yoke your father put on us]?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him answered, “The people said to you, ‘Your father ·forced us to work very hard [L made our yoke heavy]. Now make our work ·easier [lighter].’ You should tell them, ‘My little ·finger [L one] is ·bigger than my father’s legs [L thicker than my father’s loins/waist]. 11 ·He forced you to work hard [L My father laid a heavy yoke on you], but I will ·make you work even harder [L add to your yoke]. My father ·beat [scourged; disciplined] you with whips, but I will ·beat [scourge; discipline] you with ·whips that have sharp points [L scorpions; C either a metaphor or an especially painful kind of whip].’”
12 Rehoboam had told the people, “Come back to me in three days.” So after three days Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam. 13 King Rehoboam spoke ·cruel words [harshly] to them, because he had rejected the ·advice [counsel] of the elders. 14 He followed the ·advice [counsel] of the young men and said, “My father ·forced you to work hard [L laid a heavy yoke on you], but I will ·make you work even harder [L add to your yoke]. My father beat you with whips, but I will ·beat [scourge; discipline] you with ·whips that have sharp points [L scorpions; v. 11].”
15 So the king ·did not [refused to] listen to the people. God caused this ·to happen [turn of events] so that the Lord could ·keep the promise he had made [fulfill/establish the word he spoke] to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah, a prophet from Shiloh.
16 When all the Israelites saw that the king refused to listen to them, they said to the king,
“·We have no share [L What share/part/T portion have we…?] in David [C in David’s dynasty]!
We have no ·part [inheritance; interest; heritage] in the son of Jesse!
People of Israel, ·let’s go to our own homes [L each one to your tents]!
Let David’s son ·rule his own people [L look after your own house; C that is, the tribe of Judah].”
So all the Israelites ·went home [L left for their tents]. 17 But Rehoboam ·still ruled [continued to reign] over the Israelites who lived in the towns of Judah.
18 ·Adoniram [or Hadoram] was in charge of the ·forced labor [labor force]. When Rehoboam sent him to the people, they ·threw stones at him until he died [stoned him to death]. But King Rehoboam ·ran to his [hurriedly jumped into his] chariot and ·escaped [fled] to Jerusalem. 19 Since then, Israel has been in rebellion against the ·family [dynasty; L house] of David.

10 Roboam fue a Siquem, porque en Siquem se había reunido todo Israel para hacerlo rey. 2 Cuando lo supo Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el cual estaba en Egipto, adonde había huido a causa del rey Salomón, volvió de Egipto, 3 pues habían enviado a llamarle. Vino, pues, Jeroboam con todo Israel, y hablaron a Roboam diciendo:
4 —Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; alivia ahora algo de la dura servidumbre y del pesado yugo con que tu padre nos apremió, y te serviremos.
5 Él les dijo:
—Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.
Y el pueblo se fue.
6 Entonces el rey Roboam consultó con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón, su padre, cuando éste vivía, y les dijo:
—¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo?
7 Ellos le contestaron diciendo:
—Si te conduces humanamente con este pueblo, lo tratas bien y le hablas con buenas palabras, ellos te servirán siempre.
8 Pero él abandonó el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, y pidió consejo a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y estaban a su servicio. 9 Y les preguntó:
—¿Qué aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado diciendo: “Alivia algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros”?
10 Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le contestaron:
—Así dirás al pueblo que te ha hablado diciendo: “Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, pero tú disminuye nuestra carga.” Así le dirás: “Mi dedo más pequeño es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre. 11 Así que, si mi padre os cargó de yugo pesado, yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.”
12 Volvió, pues, Jeroboam con todo el pueblo ante Roboam al tercer día, según el rey les había mandado diciendo: “Volved a mí de aquí a tres días.” 13 Y el rey les respondió ásperamente, abandonando el rey Roboam el consejo de los ancianos, 14 y hablándoles conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo:
—Mi padre hizo pesado vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, pero yo os castigaré con escorpiones.
15 No escuchó el rey al pueblo; porque la causa era de Dios, para que se cumpliera la palabra que Jehová había anunciado por medio de Ahías, el silonita, a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat. 16 Al ver todo Israel que el rey no les había oído, respondió el pueblo al rey diciendo:
«¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David?
No tenemos herencia en el hijo de Isaí.
¡Israel, cada uno a sus tiendas!
¡David, mira ahora por tu casa!»
Así se fue todo Israel a sus tiendas.
17 Pero reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que habitaban en las ciudades de Judá. 18 Envió luego el rey Roboam a Adoram, que estaba a cargo de los tributos, pero lo apedrearon los hijos de Israel, y murió. Entonces se apresuró el rey Roboam a subir en su carro para huir a Jerusalén. 19 Así se apartó Israel de la casa de David hasta el día de hoy.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
10 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam(B) son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel(D) went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us,(E) but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(F) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer,(G) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(H) the advice the elders(I) gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God,(J) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.(K)
16 When all Israel(L) saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,(M)
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!
Look after your own house, David!”
So all the Israelites went home. 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[a](N) who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
