10 罗波安到示剑去，因为全体以色列人都去了示剑，要立他作王。 2 那时，尼八的儿子耶罗波安，因为逃避所罗门王，住在埃及；他一听见这事，就从埃及回来。 3 他们派人去叫耶罗波安回来；他就和全体以色列人来见罗波安，对他说： 4 “你父亲使我们所负的轭甚重，现在求你减轻你父亲加在我们身上的劳役和重轭，我们就服事你。” 5 罗波安对他们说：“三天以后你们再来见我吧！”众人就离去了。

6 罗波安王和一些在他父亲所罗门在世的时候，侍立在所罗门面前的老人商议，说：“你们有甚么提议，我好回复这班民众呢？” 7 他们对他说：“如果王善待人民，使他们喜悦，对他们说好话，他们就必永远作你的仆人。”

8 王不接受这些老人的意见，却去和那些同他一起长大，侍立在他面前的年轻人商议， 9 问他们：“这人民对我说：求你减轻你父亲加在我们身上的重轭吧。你们有甚么提议，我好回复他们呢？” 10 那些同他一起长大的年轻人对他说：“这人民对王说：‘你父亲使我们所负的轭甚重，现在求你减轻些吧。’王要这样对他们说：‘我的小拇指比我父亲的腰还粗呢。 11 我父亲把重轭加在你们身上，我必使你们负更重的轭；我父亲用鞭打你们，我却要用蝎子鞭责打你们。’”
12 耶罗波安和全体人民都遵照罗波安王所说“你们第三天再来见我”的话，第三天来见罗波安。 13 罗波安王很严厉地回答他们。罗波安王不接受老人的意见， 14 却照着年轻人的主意对他们说：“我父亲使你们负重轭，我必使你们负更重的轭；我父亲用鞭子责打你们，我却要用蝎子鞭责打你们。” 15 王不听从人民的要求，这事原是出于 神，为要实现耶和华借着示罗人亚希雅对尼八的儿子耶罗波安所说的话。

16 以色列人见王不听他们的要求，就对王说：
“我们和大卫有甚么关系呢？
我们和耶西的儿子并不相干。
以色列人哪，各回各家去吧，
大卫啊，现在只顾你自己的家吧。”
于是全体以色列人都回自己的家去了。 17 只有那些住在犹大众城镇的以色列人，罗波安仍然作他们的王。 18 罗波安王差派了监管苦工的哈多兰（“哈多兰”是“亚多尼兰”或“亚多兰”的另一种写法；参王上4:6，12:18）到以色列人那里去，以色列人就用石头把他打死了。罗波安王急忙上车，逃回耶路撒冷去了。 19 这样，以色列人背叛了大卫家，直到今日。

10 Rehabeam ging naar Sichem, want heel Israël was naar Sichem gekomen om hem tot koning te kronen. 2 Jerobeam, de zoon van Nebat, was nog in Egypte. Hij was daarheen gevlucht voor koning Salomo.[a] Toen hij het nieuws hoorde, kwam hij uit Egypte terug. 3 Het volk had hem laten halen. Daarna gingen Jerobeam en het volk Israël naar Rehabeam. Ze zeiden tegen hem: 4 "Uw vader is hard voor ons geweest. Hij heeft ons hard voor hem laten werken. Wees minder hard voor ons dan hij. Laat ons alstublieft voor u minder hard hoeven te werken. Dan zullen we u dienen." 5 Hij antwoordde: "Ga, en kom overmorgen terug." En het volk ging weg.
6 Koning Rehabeam ging naar de oude raadgevers van zijn vader Salomo. Hij vroeg hun: "Wat raden jullie mij aan? Wat zal ik hen antwoorden?" 7 Ze zeiden tegen hem: "Als u ervoor kiest om te doen wat ze vragen, en hun dus een vriendelijk antwoord geeft, zullen ze u voor altijd dienen." 8 Maar hij wilde niet doen wat de oude raadgevers zeiden. Hij ging ook raad vragen aan de jonge mannen die met hem opgegroeid waren en bij hem in dienst waren. 9 Hij zei tegen hen: "Het volk heeft tegen mij gezegd: 'Laat ons voor u minder hard hoeven te werken dan voor uw vader.' Wat raden jullie mij aan? Wat zal ik antwoorden?" 10 Ze zeiden: "U moet hen antwoorden: Mijn vader was niets vergeleken bij mij! 11 Luister: mijn vader heeft jullie hard laten werken, maar ik zal jullie nog veel harder laten werken. Mijn vader heeft jullie met zwepen geslagen, maar ik zal jullie met schorpioenen slaan!"
12 Twee dagen later kwam Jerobeam met het hele volk bij Rehabeam terug, zoals hij hun had gezegd. 13 En de koning gaf het volk een onvriendelijk antwoord. Hij luisterde niet naar de raad die de oude leiders hem hadden gegeven. 14 Hij zei tegen hen wat de jonge mannen hem hadden aangeraden. Hij zei: "Mijn vader heeft jullie hard laten werken, maar ik zal jullie nog veel harder laten werken. Mijn vader heeft jullie met zwepen geslagen, maar ik zal jullie met schorpioenen slaan!" 15 De koning luisterde dus niet naar het volk. Want de Heer wilde werkelijkheid maken wat Hij door de profeet Ahia uit Silo had gezegd tegen Jerobeam.[b]
16 De Israëlieten merkten dat de koning niet naar hen wilde luisteren. Daarom zeiden ze tegen hem: "Dan willen we niets meer met Davids koningshuis te maken hebben! U, de kleinzoon van David, hoeft over ons geen koning meer te zijn. Naar huis, Israëlieten! Het koningshuis van David moet maar zien wat het doet!" En ze gingen naar huis. 17 Maar over de Israëlieten die in de steden van Juda woonden, werd Rehabeam wel koning. 18 Koning Rehabeam stuurde Adoram[c] erop af om de mensen weer aan het werk te zetten, maar ze gooiden hem met stenen dood. Koning Rehabeam kon zelf maar nét ontsnappen door op zijn wagen te klimmen en naar Jeruzalem te vluchten. 19 Zo werden de Israëlieten ontrouw aan de familie van David. En dat is zo gebleven. 10 Roboán fue a Siquén porque todos los israelitas se habían reunido allí para proclamarlo rey. 2 De esto se enteró Jeroboán hijo de Nabat, así que volvió de Egipto, que es adonde había huido del rey Salomón. 3 Cuando lo mandaron a buscar, él y todo Israel fueron a ver a Roboán y le dijeron:
4 ―Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado. Alívianos tú ahora el duro trabajo y el pesado yugo que él nos echó encima; así te serviremos.
5 ―Idos por ahora —respondió Roboán—, pero volved a verme dentro de tres días.
Cuando el pueblo se fue, 6 el rey Roboán consultó con los ancianos que en vida de su padre Salomón habían estado a su servicio.
―¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros que le responda a este pueblo? —preguntó.
7 Ellos respondieron:
―Si tratas con bondad a este pueblo, y condesciendes con ellos y les respondes con amabilidad, ellos te servirán para siempre.
8 Pero Roboán rechazó el consejo que le dieron los ancianos, y consultó a los jóvenes que se habían criado con él y que estaban a su servicio.
9 ―¿Qué me aconsejáis vosotros? —les preguntó—. ¿Cómo debo responderle a este pueblo que me dice: “Alívianos el yugo que tu padre nos echó encima”?
10 Aquellos jóvenes, que se habían criado con él, le contestaron:
―El pueblo te ha dicho: “Tu padre nos impuso un yugo pesado; hazlo tú más ligero”. Pues bien, respóndeles de este modo: “Mi dedo meñique es más grueso que la cintura de mi padre. 11 Si él os impuso un yugo pesado, ¡yo os aumentaré la carga! Y, si él os castigaba con una vara, ¡yo lo haré con un látigo!”[a]
12 Al tercer día, en la fecha que el rey Roboán había indicado, Jeroboán regresó con todo el pueblo para presentarse ante él. 13 Pero el rey Roboán les respondió con brusquedad: rechazó el consejo de los ancianos 14 y siguió más bien el de los jóvenes. Les dijo: «Si mi padre os impuso[b] un yugo pesado; ¡yo os aumentaré la carga! Si él os castigaba con una vara, ¡yo lo haré con un látigo!»
15 Y, como el rey no escuchó al pueblo, las cosas tomaron este rumbo por voluntad de Dios. Así se cumplió la palabra que el Señor le había comunicado a Jeroboán hijo de Nabat por medio de Ahías el silonita.
16 Cuando se dieron cuenta de que el rey[c] no iba a hacerles caso, todos los israelitas exclamaron a una:
«¡Pueblo de Israel, todos a vuestras casas!
¡Y tú, David, ocúpate de los tuyos!
¿Qué parte tenemos con David?
¿Qué herencia tenemos con el hijo de Isaí?»
Así que se fueron, cada uno a su casa. 17 Sin embargo, Roboán siguió reinando sobre los israelitas que vivían en las ciudades de Judá. 18 Más tarde, el rey Roboán envió a Adonirán[d] para que supervisara el trabajo forzado, pero los israelitas lo mataron a pedradas. ¡A duras penas logró el rey subir a su carro y escapar a Jerusalén! 19 Desde entonces Israel ha estado en rebelión contra la familia de David.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(A)
10 Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king. 2 When Jeroboam(B) son of Nebat heard this (he was in Egypt, where he had fled(C) from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. 3 So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and all Israel(D) went to Rehoboam and said to him: 4 “Your father put a heavy yoke on us,(E) but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5 Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people went away.
6 Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(F) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.
7 They replied, “If you will be kind to these people and please them and give them a favorable answer,(G) they will always be your servants.”
8 But Rehoboam rejected(H) the advice the elders(I) gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. 9 He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “The people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from God,(J) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.(K)
16 When all Israel(L) saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:
“What share do we have in David,(M)
what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!
Look after your own house, David!”
So all the Israelites went home. 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.
18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[a](N) who was in charge of forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
