大衛數點人口(A)
21 撒但起來攻擊以色列人，引誘大衛去數點以色列人的數目。 2 於是大衛對約押和民眾的領袖說：“你們去數點以色列人，從別是巴直到但，然後回來見我，讓我知道他們的數目。” 3 約押說：“願耶和華使他的子民比現在增加百倍。我主我王啊，他們不都是我主的僕人嗎？我主為甚麼要作這事呢？為甚麼使以色列人陷在罪裡呢？” 4 但王堅持他的命令，約押不敢違抗；約押就出去，走遍以色列各地，然後回到耶路撒冷。 5 約押把數點人民的數目呈報大衛：全以色列能拿刀的人，共有一百一十萬；猶大能拿刀的人，共有四十七萬。 6 唯有利未人和便雅憫人，他沒有數點在內，因為約押厭惡王這個命令。
耶和華降罰(B)
7 神不喜悅這事，所以他擊打以色列人。 8 大衛對 神說：“我犯了重罪，因為我行了這事；現在求你除去你僕人的罪孽，因我作了十分愚昧的事。”
9 耶和華告訴大衛的先見迦得，說： 10 “你去告訴大衛，說：‘耶和華這樣說：我給你提出三件事，你可以選擇一件，我好向你施行。’” 11 於是迦得來見大衛，對他說：“耶和華這樣說：‘你可以選擇： 12 或是三年的饑荒；或是在你敵人面前逃亡，被你仇敵的刀劍追殺三個月；或是耶和華的刀攻擊三天，就是在國中發生瘟疫三日，耶和華的使者在以色列的四境施行毀滅。’現在你考慮一下，我該用甚麼話回覆那差派我來的。” 13 大衛對迦得說：“我十分作難，我情願落在耶和華的手裡，因為他有極豐盛的憐憫，我不願落在人的手裡。”

David’s Military Census
21 Satan[a](A) rose up against Israel and incited David(B) to count the people of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, ‘Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring a report to me so I can know their number.’(C)
3 Joab replied, ‘May the Lord multiply the number of his people a hundred times over!(D) My lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel? ’
4 Yet the king’s order prevailed over Joab. So Joab left and travelled throughout Israel and then returned to Jerusalem. 5 Joab gave the total troop registration to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand armed men[b] and in Judah itself four hundred and seventy thousand armed men. 6 But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the count because the king’s command was detestable to him. 7 This command was also evil in God’s sight, so he afflicted Israel.
8 David said to God, ‘I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing. Now, please take away your servant’s guilt, for I’ve been very foolish.’(E)
David’s Punishment
9 Then(F) the Lord instructed Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 ‘Go and say to David, “This is what the Lord says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.” ’
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Take your choice: 12 three years of famine, or three months of devastation by your foes with the sword of your enemy overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the Lord – a plague on the land, the angel of the Lord bringing destruction to the whole territory of Israel.” Now decide what answer I should take back to the one who sent me.’
13 David answered Gad, ‘I’m in anguish. Please, let me fall into the Lord’s hands because his mercies are very great,(I) but don’t let me fall into human hands.’
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men died. 15 Then God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but when the angel was about to destroy the city,[c] the Lord looked, relented concerning the destruction,(J) and said to the angel who was destroying the people, ‘Enough, withdraw your hand now! ’ The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing-floor of Ornan[d] the Jebusite.
16 When David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, with his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem, David and the elders, covered in sackcloth,(K) fell face down. 17 David said to God, ‘Wasn’t I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Lord my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father’s family, but don’t let the plague be against your people.’
David’s Altar
18 So the angel of the Lord ordered Gad(L) to tell David to go and set up an altar to the Lord on the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.(M) 19 David went up at Gad’s command spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 Ornan was threshing wheat when he turned and saw the angel. His four sons, who were with him, hid. 21 David came to Ornan, and when Ornan looked and saw David, he left the threshing-floor and bowed to David with his face to the ground.
22 Then David said to Ornan, ‘Give me this threshing-floor plot so that I may build an altar to the Lord on it. Give it to me for the full price, so the plague on the people may be stopped.’
23 Ornan said to David, ‘Take it! My lord the king may do whatever he wants.[e] See, I give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering – I give it all.’
24 King David answered Ornan, ‘No, I insist on paying the full price, for I will not take for the Lord what belongs to you or offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.’
25 So David gave Ornan seven kilograms of gold[f] for the plot. 26 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and he answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.(N)
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, David offered sacrifices there when he saw that the Lord answered him at the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon,(O) 30 but David could not go before it to enquire of God, because he was terrified of the sword of the Lord’s angel.

2 王は、ヨアブをはじめ指導者たちに命じました。「国中の人口を完全に調べ上げ、その人数を報告してほしい。」
3 すると、ヨアブが反対意見を述べました。「主が民を百倍に増してくださっても、みなあなたの民ではありませんか。それなのになぜ、そんな要求をなさるのですか。なぜ、イスラエルに罪を犯させるようなことをなさるのですか。」
4 しかし、王が説き伏せたので、ヨアブは命令どおりイスラエル中を巡り歩き、エルサレムに帰って来ました。 5 ヨアブが報告した総人口は、全イスラエルで戦いに出られる者が百十万人、ユダで四十七万人でした。 6 ただし、ヨアブは王の命令に心を痛めていたので、数の中にレビとベニヤミンの二部族を入れませんでした。
7 この人口調査は神の御心を損なったので、神はイスラエルを罰しました。
8 ダビデは神に言いました。「私は罪を犯しました。どうかお赦しください。自分のしたことがどんなに間違っていたか、今わかりました。」
9 そこで主は、王の相談役である預言者ガドに語りました。 10-11 「ダビデに次のように伝えよ。『主は、三つのうち一つを選べと言われる。 12 三年間のききんか、三か月の間敵に苦しめられることか、それとも、御使いが国中を荒らし、三日間恐ろしい疫病に悩まされることかだ。よく考えて、私を遣わされたお方に何と答えるか決めるように。』」

22 ダビデはオルナンに言いました。「それ相応の金を払うから、この打穀場を譲ってくれないか。ここに主のための祭壇を築きたいのだ。そうすれば、伝染病も収まるだろうから。」
23 「王よ、どうぞお気に召すままにお使いください。よろしければ、焼き尽くすいけにえ用の牛も差し上げます。打穀の器具を、たきぎ代わりに使っていただいてけっこうです。穀物のささげ物がお入り用でしたら、小麦がございます。何でもご用立ていたします。」
24 「いや、十分な金額で買い取らせてほしい。おまえのものを取って、それを主にささげるわけにはいかない。ふところを痛めずに、いけにえをささげることはしたくないのだ。」
25 そして、ダビデはオルナンに六百シェケル（約七キログラム）の金を与えました。 26 こうして手に入れた場所に主のための祭壇を築き、その上で、焼き尽くすいけにえと和解のいけにえをささげました。ダビデが大声で主を呼ぶと、主は彼に答え、天から下った火がいけにえを焼き尽くしました。 27 それから、主は御使いに命じて、剣をさやに納めさせました。 28 ダビデは願いが聞かれたのを見て、もう一度いけにえをささげました。 29 当時、モーセが荒野で造った幕屋と祭壇は、ギブオンの高台にありました。 30 しかしダビデは、神を求めてそこまで行くことができませんでした。抜き身の剣を持つ御使いを恐れたからです。

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
