21 撒但起来攻击以色列人，引诱大卫去数点以色列人的数目。 2 于是大卫对约押和民众的领袖说：“你们去数点以色列人，从别是巴直到但，然后回来见我，让我知道他们的数目。” 3 约押说：“愿耶和华使他的子民比现在增加百倍。我主我王啊，他们不都是我主的仆人吗？我主为甚么要作这事呢？为甚么使以色列人陷在罪里呢？” 4 但王坚持他的命令，约押不敢违抗；约押就出去，走遍以色列各地，然后回到耶路撒冷。 5 约押把数点人民的数目呈报大卫：全以色列能拿刀的人，共有一百一十万；犹大能拿刀的人，共有四十七万。 6 唯有利未人和便雅悯人，他没有数点在内，因为约押厌恶王这个命令。

耶和华降罚(B)

7 　神不喜悦这事，所以他击打以色列人。 8 大卫对　神说：“我犯了重罪，因为我行了这事；现在求你除去你仆人的罪孽，因我作了十分愚昧的事。”

9 耶和华告诉大卫的先见迦得，说： 10 “你去告诉大卫，说：‘耶和华这样说：我给你提出三件事，你可以选择一件，我好向你施行。’” 11 于是迦得来见大卫，对他说：“耶和华这样说：‘你可以选择： 12 或是三年的饥荒；或是在你敌人面前逃亡，被你仇敌的刀剑追杀三个月；或是耶和华的刀攻击三天，就是在国中发生瘟疫三日，耶和华的使者在以色列的四境施行毁灭。’现在你考虑一下，我该用甚么话回复那差派我来的。” 13 大卫对迦得说：“我十分作难，我情愿落在耶和华的手里，因为他有极丰盛的怜悯，我不愿落在人的手里。”

14 于是耶和华使瘟疫降在以色列人身上；以色列人死了七万人。 15 　神差派一位使者到耶路撒冷去，要毁灭那城；正要施行毁灭的时候，耶和华看见了，就后悔所要降的这灾，于是对施行毁灭的天使说：“够了！住手吧！”那时，耶和华的使者正站在耶布斯人阿珥楠的禾场附近。 16 大卫举目看见耶和华的使者站在天地之间，手里拿着出了鞘的刀，指向耶路撒冷。大卫和众长老都穿上麻布，脸伏于地。 17 大卫对　神说：“吩咐统计这人民的不是我吗？是我犯了罪，行了这大恶；但这羊群作了甚么呢？耶和华我的　神啊，愿你的手攻击我和我的家族，不可把瘟疫降在你子民的身上。”

18 耶和华的使者吩咐迦得去告诉大卫，叫他上去，在耶布斯人阿珥楠的禾场上，为耶和华筑一座祭坛。 19 大卫就照着迦得奉耶和华的名所说的话上去了。 20 那时阿珥楠正在打麦子；阿珥楠转过身来看见了天使，就和他的四个儿子一起躲藏起来。 21 大卫来到阿珥楠那里，阿珥楠看见大卫，就从禾场上出来，脸伏于地，向大卫下拜。 22 大卫对阿珥楠说：“请把这块禾场的地让给我，我要在这里为耶和华筑一座祭坛，请你算足价银让给我，使民间的瘟疫可以止息。” 23 阿珥楠对大卫说：“只管拿去吧，我主我王看怎样好就怎样行吧；你看，我把牛给你作燔祭，把打禾的用具当柴烧，拿麦子作素祭；这一切我都送给你。” 24 大卫王对阿珥楠说：“不，我必照足价银向你买；我不能拿你的东西献给耶和华，也不能把没有付代价的东西献上作燔祭。” 25 于是大卫称了六千八百四十克金子给阿珥楠，买了那块地。 26 大卫在那里为耶和华筑了一座祭坛，献上燔祭和平安祭；他呼求耶和华，耶和华就应允他，从天上降火在燔祭坛上。 27 耶和华吩咐使者，他就收刀入鞘。

21 Satan hófst í gegn Ísrael og egndi Davíð til þess að telja Ísrael.

2 Þá mælti Davíð við Jóab og höfðingja lýðsins: "Farið og teljið Ísrael frá Beerseba til Dan og látið mig vita það, svo að ég fái að vita tölu á þeim."

3 Jóab svaraði: "Drottinn margfaldi lýðinn _ hversu margir sem þeir nú kunna að vera _ hundrað sinnum. Þeir eru þó, minn herra konungur, allir þjónar herra míns. Hví æskir herra minn þessa? Hvers vegna á það að verða Ísrael til áfellis?"

4 En Jóab mátti eigi gjöra annað en það, sem konungur bauð. Lagði Jóab þá af stað og fór um allan Ísrael og kom síðan aftur til Jerúsalem.

5 Og Jóab sagði Davíð töluna, er komið hafði út við manntalið: Í öllum Ísrael voru ein milljón og hundrað þúsundir vopnaðra manna, og í Júda fjögur hundruð og sjötíu þúsundir vopnaðra manna.

6 En Leví og Benjamín taldi hann eigi, því að Jóab hraus hugur við skipun konungs.

7 En þetta verk var illt í augum Guðs, og laust hann Ísrael.

8 Þá sagði Davíð við Guð: "Mjög hefi ég syndgað, er ég framdi þetta verk, en nú, tak þú burt misgjörð þjóns þíns, því að mjög óviturlega hefir mér til tekist."

9 En Drottinn talaði til Gaðs, sjáanda Davíðs, á þessa leið:

10 "Far þú og mæl svo við Davíð: Svo segir Drottinn: Þrjá kosti set ég þér, kjós einn af þeim, og mun ég svo við þig gjöra."

11 Þá gekk Gað til Davíðs og sagði við hann: "Svo segir Drottinn: Kjós þér,

12 annaðhvort að hungur verði í þrjú ár, eða að þú verðir að flýja í þrjá mánuði fyrir óvinum þínum og sverð fjandmanna þinna nái þér, eða að sverð Drottins og drepsótt geisi í landinu í þrjá daga og engill Drottins valdi eyðingu í öllu Ísraelslandi. Hygg nú að, hverju ég eigi að svara þeim, er sendi mig."

13 Davíð svaraði Gað: "Ég er í miklum nauðum staddur. Falli ég þá í hendur Drottins, því að mikil er miskunn hans, en í manna hendur vil ég ekki falla."

14 Drottinn lét þá drepsótt koma í Ísrael, og féllu sjötíu þúsundir manns af Ísrael.

15 Og Guð sendi engil til Jerúsalem til þess að eyða hana, og er hann var að eyða hana, leit Drottinn til og hann iðraði hins illa, og sagði við engilinn, er eyddi fólkinu: "Nóg er að gjört! Drag nú að þér höndina!" En engill Drottins var þá hjá þreskivelli Ornans Jebúsíta.

16 Og Davíð hóf upp augu sín og sá engil Drottins standa milli himins og jarðar með brugðið sverð í hendi, er hann beindi gegn Jerúsalem. Þá féll Davíð og öldungarnir fram á andlit sér, klæddir hærusekkjum.

17 Og Davíð sagði við Guð: "Var það eigi ég, er bauð að telja fólkið? Það er ég, sem hefi syndgað og breytt mjög illa, en þetta er hjörð mín, _ hvað hefir hún gjört? Drottinn, Guð minn, lát hönd þína leggjast á mig og ættmenn mína, en eigi á lýð þinn til þess að valda mannhruni."

18 En engill Drottins bauð Gað að segja Davíð, að Davíð skyldi fara upp eftir til þess að reisa Drottni altari á þreskivelli Ornans Jebúsíta.

19 Og Davíð fór upp eftir að boði Gaðs, því er hann hafði talað í nafni Drottins.

20 Og er Ornan sneri sér við, sá hann konung koma og fjóra sonu hans með honum, en Ornan var að þreskja hveiti.

21 Og er Davíð kom til Ornans, leit Ornan upp og sá Davíð. Gekk hann þá út af þreskivellinum og laut á ásjónu sína til jarðar fyrir Davíð.

22 Þá mælti Davíð við Ornan: "Lát þú þreskivöllinn af hendi við mig, svo að ég geti reist Drottni þar altari _ skalt þú selja mér það fullu verði _ og plágunni megi létta af lýðnum."

23 Ornan svaraði Davíð: "Tak þú það. Minn herra konungurinn gjöri sem honum þóknast. Sjá, ég gef nautin til brennifórnar og þreskisleðana til eldiviðar og hveitið til matfórnar, allt gef ég það."

24 En Davíð konungur sagði við Ornan: "Eigi svo, en kaupa vil ég það fullu verði, því að eigi vil ég taka það sem þitt er Drottni til handa og færa brennifórn, er ég hefi kauplaust þegið."

25 Síðan greiddi Davíð Ornan sex hundruð sikla gulls fyrir völlinn.

26 Og Davíð reisti Drottni þar altari og fórnaði brennifórnum og heillafórnum, og er hann ákallaði Drottin, svaraði hann honum með því að senda eld af himnum á brennifórnaraltarið.

27 Og Drottinn bauð englinum að slíðra sverð sitt.

28 Þá er Davíð sá, að Drottinn svaraði honum á þreskivelli Ornans Jebúsíta, þá færði hann þar fórnir.

29 En bústaður Drottins, er Móse hafði gjört í eyðimörkinni, og brennifórnaraltarið voru um það leyti á hæðinni í Gíbeon.

30 En Davíð gat eigi gengið fram fyrir það til þess að leita Guðs, því að hann var hræddur við sverð engils Drottins.

The Census of Israel and Judah(A)

21 Now (B)Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to [a]number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and to the leaders of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, (C)and bring the number of them to me that I may know it.”

3 And Joab answered, “May the Lord make His people a hundred times more than they are. But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why then does my lord require this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt in Israel?”

4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem. 5 Then Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to David. All Israel had one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and Judah had four hundred and seventy thousand men who drew the sword. 6 (D)But he did not count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s [b]word was abominable to Joab.

7 And [c]God was displeased with this thing; therefore He struck Israel. 8 So David said to God, (E)“I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing; (F)but now, I pray, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”

9 Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s (G)seer, saying, 10 “Go and tell David, (H)saying, ‘Thus says the Lord: “I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.” ’ ”

11 So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Choose for yourself, 12 (I)either [d]three years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the Lord—the plague in the land, with the [e]angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.’ Now consider what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”

13 And David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Please let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for His (J)mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”

14 So the Lord sent a (K)plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell. 15 And God sent [f]an (L)angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As [g]he was destroying, the Lord looked and (M)relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who was destroying, “It is enough; now restrain [h]your hand.” And the angel of the Lord stood by the (N)threshing floor of [i]Ornan the Jebusite.

16 Then David lifted his eyes and (O)saw the angel of the Lord standing between earth and heaven, having in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. So David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces. 17 And David said to God, “Was it not I who commanded the people to be numbered? I am the one who has sinned and done evil indeed; but these (P)sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray, O Lord my God, be against me and my father’s house, but not against Your people that they should be plagued.”

18 Therefore, the (Q)angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David that David should go and erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 So David went up at the word of Gad, which he had spoken in the name of the Lord. 20 Now Ornan turned and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves, but Ornan continued threshing wheat. 21 So David came to Ornan, and Ornan looked and saw David. And he went out from the threshing floor, and bowed before David with his face to the ground. 22 Then David said to Ornan, [j]“Grant me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar on it to the Lord. You shall grant it to me at the full price, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.”

23 But Ornan said to David, “Take it to yourself, and let my lord the king do what is good in his eyes. Look, I also give you the oxen for burnt offerings, the threshing implements for wood, and the wheat for the grain offering; I give it all.”

24 Then King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will surely buy it for the full price, for I will not take what is yours for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings with that which costs me nothing.” 25 So (R)David gave Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place. 26 And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on the Lord; and (S)He answered him from heaven by fire on the altar of burnt offering.

27 So the Lord commanded the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.

28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there. 29 (T)For the tabernacle of the Lord and the altar of the burnt offering, which Moses had made in the wilderness, were at that time at the high place in (U)Gibeon. 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)

21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”

3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”

4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.

6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.

8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”

9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”

11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”

13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.

16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)

17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

David Builds an Altar

18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.

20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.

22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”

23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”

24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
