雅各逃離拉班

31 雅各聽見拉班兒子們的話，說：「雅各把我們父親所有的都奪去了！他從我們父親所擁有的獲得這一切的財富。」 2 雅各見拉班的臉色，看哪，待他不如從前了。 3 耶和華對雅各說：「你要回你祖先之地，到你本族那裏去，我必與你同在。」 4 雅各就派人叫拉結和利亞到田野他的羊羣那裏去， 5 對她們說：「我看你們父親待我的臉色不如從前了，但我父親的　神向來與我同在。 6 你們也知道，我盡了全力服事你們的父親。 7 可是你們的父親欺騙我，十次更改我的工資，但　神不容許他害我。 8 他若說：『有點的歸給你作工資』，羊羣所生的都是有點的；他若說：『有紋的歸給你作工資』，羊羣所生的都是有紋的。 9 這樣，　神把你們父親的牲畜拿來賜給我了。

10 「羊羣交配的時候，我在夢中舉目一看，看哪，跳母羊的公羊都是有紋的、有點的、有花斑的。 11 　神的使者在夢中呼叫我說：『雅各。』我說：『我在這裏。』 12 他說：『你舉目觀看，跳母羊的公羊都是有紋的、有點的、有花斑的。拉班向你所做的一切，我都看見了。 13 我是伯特利的　神；你曾在那裏用油膏過柱子，向我許過願。現在你起來，離開這地，回你本族之地去吧！』」 14 拉結和利亞回答雅各說：「在我們父親家裏還有我們可分得的產業嗎？ 15 我們不是被他看作外人嗎？因為他賣了我們，還吞吃了我們的銀錢。 16 　神從我們父親所拿走的一切財物，都是我們和我們孩子的。現在，凡　神所吩咐你的，你只管去做吧！」

17 雅各起來，叫他的孩子和妻子都騎上駱駝， 18 又趕着他一切的牲畜和他所得的一切財物，就是他在巴旦‧亞蘭所得的，他擁有的牲畜[a]，往迦南地他父親以撒那裏去了。 19 當時拉班去剪羊毛，拉結偷了他父親家中的神像。 20 雅各瞞住亞蘭人拉班，不通知他就逃走了。 21 雅各帶着他所有的逃走了；他起程，渡過大河，面向着基列山。

拉班追趕雅各

22 到第三天，有人告訴拉班，雅各逃跑了。 23 拉班帶着他的弟兄們去追他，追了七天，就在基列山追上了。 24 夜間，　神來到亞蘭人拉班那裏，在夢中對他說：「你要小心，不可對雅各說好說歹。」

25 拉班追上雅各。雅各在山上支搭帳棚；拉班和他的弟兄們也在基列山上支搭帳棚。 26 拉班對雅各說：「你做的是甚麼事呢？你瞞着我把我的女兒們帶走，好像用刀劍擄去一般。 27 你為甚麼暗暗地逃跑，瞞着我，不通知我一聲，叫我可以歡樂、唱歌、擊鼓、彈琴送你回去呢？ 28 為甚麼不容許我與外孫和女兒吻別呢？你現在所做的真是愚蠢！ 29 我的手本有能力害你，只是你父親的　神昨夜對我說：『你要小心，不可對雅各說好說歹。』 30 現在你既然這麼想念你的父家，不得不去，為甚麼又偷了我的神明呢？」 31 雅各回答拉班說：「因為我害怕，我想，恐怕你把你的女兒從我這裏奪走。 32 至於你的神明，你若在誰那裏搜出來，就不讓誰活。當着我們弟兄面前，你認一認在我這裏有甚麼東西是你的，你就拿去吧。」原來雅各並不知道拉結偷了神明。

33 拉班進了雅各、利亞，以及兩個使女的帳棚，卻沒有找到，就從利亞的帳棚出來，進入拉結的帳棚。 34 拉結拿了神像，藏在駱駝的鞍子裏，自己坐在上面。拉班搜遍了那帳棚，並沒有找到。 35 拉結對她父親說：「請我主不要生氣，因為我恰有月事，不能在你面前起來。」拉班搜尋，卻找不到神像。

36 於是雅各發怒，斥責拉班。雅各對拉班說：「我有甚麼過犯，有甚麼罪惡，你竟這樣火速地追我？ 37 你搜遍了我一切的物件，你找到甚麼呢？可以放在你我弟兄面前，叫他們在我們兩個之間評評理。 38 我在你那裏這二十年，你的母綿羊、母山羊沒有掉過胎。你羊羣中的公綿羊，我沒有吃過； 39 被野獸撕裂的，我沒有帶來給你，是我自己賠償的。無論是白日被偷的，或是黑夜被偷的，你都從我手中索取。 40 我常常白日受盡炎熱，黑夜受盡寒霜，不得合眼入睡。 41 我這二十年在你家裏，為你兩個女兒服事了你十四年，為你的羊羣服事了你六年，你卻十次更改我的工資。 42 若不是我父親以撒所敬畏的　神，就是亞伯拉罕的　神與我同在，你如今必定打發我空手而去。　神看見我的苦情和我手的辛勞，就在昨夜責備了你。」

雅各和拉班立約

43 拉班回答雅各說：「這兩個女兒是我的女兒，這些孩子是我的孩子，這些羊羣也都是我的羊羣；凡你所看見的都是我的。我的女兒和她們所生的孩子，我今日還能對他們做甚麼呢？ 44 現在，來吧！讓我和你立約，作你我之間的證據。」 45 雅各就拿一塊石頭立作柱子， 46 對弟兄們說：「大家來堆積石頭。」他們拿石頭堆成一堆，於是在那裏，在石堆旁邊吃喝。 47 拉班稱那石堆為伊迦爾‧撒哈杜他，雅各卻稱那石堆為迦累得[b]。 48 拉班說：「今日這石堆成為你我之間的證據。」因此這地方名叫迦累得， 49 又叫米斯巴，因為他說：「我們彼此離別以後，願耶和華在你我中間鑒察[c]。 50 你若苦待我的女兒，或在我的女兒以外另娶妻，雖沒有人在場，你看，有　神在你我中間作證。」

51 拉班又對雅各說：「看哪，這石堆，看哪，這柱子，是我在你我中間所立的。 52 這石堆是證據，這柱子也是證據。我必不越過這石堆去害你；你也不可越過這石堆和柱子來害我。 53 願亞伯拉罕的　神和拿鶴的　神，就是他們父親的　神[d]，在你我中間判斷。」雅各就指着他父親以撒所敬畏的　神起誓， 54 又在山上獻祭，請弟兄們來吃飯。他們吃了飯，就在山上過夜。 55 拉班清早起來，與他外孫和女兒親吻，為他們祝福，就回到自己的地方去了。

Jacob Leaves Secretly for Canaan

31 Now [a]Jacob heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s, and from what belonged to our father he has made all this [b]wealth.” 2 Jacob saw the [c]attitude of Laban, and behold, it was not friendly toward him as formerly. 3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “(A)Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and (B)I will be with you.” 4 So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to his flock in the field, 5 and said to them, “(C)I see your father’s [d]attitude, that it is not friendly toward me as formerly, but (D)the God of my father has been with me. 6 (E)You know that I have served your father with all my strength. 7 Yet your father has (F)cheated me and (G)changed my wages ten times; however, (H)God did not allow him to hurt me. 8 If (I)he spoke thus, ‘The speckled shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth speckled; and if he spoke thus, ‘The striped shall be your wages,’ then all the flock brought forth striped. 9 Thus God has (J)taken away your father’s livestock and given them to me. 10 And it came about at the time when the flock were [e]mating that I lifted up my eyes and saw in a dream, and behold, the male goats which were [f]mating were striped, speckled, and mottled. 11 Then (K)the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am.’ 12 He said, ‘Lift up now your eyes and see that all the male goats which are [g]mating are striped, speckled, and mottled; for (L)I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you. 13 I am (M)the God of Bethel, where you (N)anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, [h]leave this land, and (O)return to the land of your birth.’” 14 Rachel and Leah said to him, “Do we still have any portion or inheritance in our father’s house? 15 Are we not reckoned by him as foreigners? For (P)he has sold us, and has also [i]entirely consumed [j]our purchase price. 16 Surely all the wealth which God has taken away from our father belongs to us and our children; now then, do whatever God has said to you.”

17 Then Jacob arose and put his children and his wives upon camels; 18 and he drove away all his livestock and all his property which he had gathered, his acquired livestock which he had gathered in Paddan-aram, (Q)to go to the land of Canaan to his father Isaac. 19 When Laban had gone to shear his flock, then Rachel stole the [k](R)household idols that were her father’s. 20 And Jacob [l]deceived Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he arose and crossed the Euphrates River, and set his face toward the hill country of (S)Gilead.

Laban Pursues Jacob

22 When it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob had fled, 23 then he took his [m]kinsmen with him and pursued him a distance of seven days’ journey, and he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 (T)God came to Laban the Aramean in a (U)dream of the night and said to him, “[n](V)Be careful that you do not speak to Jacob either good or bad.”

25 Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, and Laban with his [o]kinsmen camped in the hill country of Gilead. 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done [p]by deceiving me and carrying away my daughters like captives of the sword? 27 Why did you flee secretly and [q]deceive me, and did not tell me so that I might have sent you away with joy and with songs, with (W)timbrel and with (X)lyre; 28 and did not allow me (Y)to kiss my sons and my daughters? Now you have done foolishly. 29 It is in [r]my power to do you harm, but (Z)the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, ‘[s](AA)Be careful not to speak either good or bad to Jacob.’ 30 Now you have indeed gone away because you longed greatly for your father’s house; but why did you steal (AB)my gods?” 31 Then Jacob replied to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought that you would take your daughters from me by force. 32 (AC)The one with whom you find your gods shall not live; in the presence of our [t]kinsmen [u]point out what is yours [v]among my belongings and take it for yourself.” For Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent and into Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two maids, but he did not find them. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the [w]household idols and put them in the camel’s saddle, and she sat on them. And Laban felt through all the tent but did not find them. 35 She said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot (AD)rise before you, for the manner of women is upon me.” So he searched but did not find the [x](AE)household idols.

36 Then Jacob became angry and contended with Laban; and Jacob said to Laban, “What is my transgression? What is my sin that you have hotly pursued me? 37 Though you have felt through all my goods, what have you found of all your household goods? Set it here before my [y]kinsmen and your [z]kinsmen, that they may decide between us two. 38 These twenty years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flocks. 39 That which was torn of beasts I did not bring to you; I bore the loss of it myself. You required it of my hand whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 Thus I was: by day the [aa]heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. 41 These twenty years I have been in your house; (AF)I served you fourteen years for your two daughters and six years for your flock, and you (AG)changed my wages ten times. 42 If (AH)the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had not been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. (AI)God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, so He (AJ)rendered judgment last night.”

The Covenant of Mizpah

43 Then Laban replied to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, and the children are my children, and (AK)the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine. But what can I do this day to these my daughters or to their children whom they have borne? 44 So now come, let us (AL)make a covenant, [ab]you and I, and (AM)let it be a witness between [ac]you and me.” 45 Then Jacob took (AN)a stone and set it up as a pillar. 46 Jacob said to his [ad]kinsmen, “Gather stones.” So they took stones and made a heap, and they ate there by the heap. 47 Now Laban (AO)called it [ae]Jegar-sahadutha, but Jacob called it [af]Galeed. 48 Laban said, “(AP)This heap is a witness between [ag]you and me this day.” Therefore it was named Galeed, 49 and [ah](AQ)Mizpah, for he said, “May the Lord watch between [ai]you and me when we are [aj]absent one from the other. 50 If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us, see, (AR)God is witness between [ak]you and me.” 51 Laban said to Jacob, “Behold this heap and behold the pillar which I have set between [al]you and me. 52 This heap is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass by this heap to you for harm, and you will not pass by this heap and this pillar to me, for harm. 53 (AS)The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, (AT)judge between us.” So Jacob swore by (AU)the fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob (AV)offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and called his [am]kinsmen to [an]the meal; and they ate [ao]the meal and spent the night on the mountain. 55 [ap]Early in the morning Laban arose, and (AW)kissed his sons and his daughters and blessed them. Then Laban departed and returned to his place.

Jacob Secretly Leaves Laban

31 Now Jacob heard the words Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob has taken everything that belongs to our father, and from what belongs to our father he has made all these riches.” 2 Then Jacob saw Laban’s face, and he noticed that his expression wasn’t the same as it was just a day or two before. 3 Then Adonai said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”

4 So Jacob sent and called for Rachel and Leah to come to the field, to his flock. 5 He said to them, “I can see by your father’s face that his expression isn’t the same as it was just a day or two ago. But the God of my father has been with me. 6 Now you yourselves know that I’ve served your father with all my strength. 7 Yet your father has fooled around with me and has changed my salary ten times—but God hasn’t allowed him to harm me. 8 If he would say, ‘the spotted ones will be your salary,’ then the flocks would give birth to spotted ones. Or if he would say, ‘the striped ones will be your salary,’ then all the flocks would give birth to striped ones. 9 So God has taken away your father’s livestock and has given them to me. 10 Now it happened when the flocks were in heat that I lifted up my eyes and saw, in a dream, behold, the males going up to the flocks were striped, spotted and speckled. 11 Then the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Hineni.’ 12 He said, ‘Lift up your eyes and see that all the males going up to the flocks are striped, spotted and speckled. For I have seen everything Laban has done to you. 13 I am the God of Beth-El where you anointed a memorial stone, where you made a vow to Me. Get up now and leave this land, and return to the land of your relatives.’”

14 Then Rachel answered along with Leah and they said to him, “Is there still a portion and inheritance for us in our father’s house? 15 Aren’t we considered foreigners to him? For he has sold us and has also completely used up our bridal price. 16 For all the riches that God has taken away from our father is for us and for our children. So now, everything God said to you, do it!”

17 Then Jacob got up and put his children and wives on camels. 18 He drove away all his livestock and all his possessions that he had acquired—the livestock in his possession that he acquired in Paddan-aram—to go to his father Isaac, to the land of Canaan.

19 But while Laban went to shear his flocks, Rachel stole the idols that belonged to her father, 20 while Jacob stole the heart from Laban the Aramean by not telling him that he was fleeing. 21 He himself fled with everything that belonged to him, and he got up and crossed the River, and set his face toward the hill country of Gilead.

Laban Confronts Jacob and Makes Covenant

22 When Laban was told on the third day after Jacob had fled, 23 he took his relatives with him and pursued him a seven days’ journey. Then he overtook him in the hill country of Gilead. 24 But God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, “Watch yourself—lest you say anything to Jacob, good or bad.”

25 So Laban caught up to Jacob. (Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country, so Laban and his brothers pitched their tents in the hill country of Gilead as well). 26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done, that you’ve stolen my heart and have driven my daughters away like captives of the sword? 27 Why did you secretly flee away, and steal from me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and with songs, with tambourines and with lyres? 28 And you didn’t even let me kiss my sons and daughters!

“Now, you’ve behaved foolishly. 29 It is in the power of my hand to do evil with you, but yesterday the God of your fathers spoke to me, saying, ‘Watch yourself—lest you say anything to Jacob, good or bad.’ 30 So now, when you up and left because you really missed your father’s house, why did you steal my gods?”

31 In response, Jacob said to Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I thought, ‘Suppose you snatch your daughters away from me.’ 32 Anyone with whom you find your gods shall not live. In front of our relatives, identify whatever is yours that is with me, and take it back.” (But Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.)

33 So Laban went into Jacob’s tent, and Leah’s tent and into the tent of the two maids, but he found nothing. Then he went out of Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s tent. 34 (Now Rachel had taken the idols, put them in the camel’s saddlebag and sat on them.) So Laban felt around the entire tent but did not find them. 35 She said to her father, “Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise before you, for I am having the way of women.” So he searched but did not find the idols.

36 Then Jacob got angry and argued with Laban. Jacob answered and said to Laban, “What’s my crime? What’s my sin that you’ve hotly pursued me? 37 For you’ve felt through all my things. What did you find? Any of your household things? Put them here, in front of my relatives and yours—so they can decide between the two of us. 38 These past twenty years I’ve been with you, your ewes and female goats have never miscarried, and I’ve never eaten the rams of your flock. 39 I didn’t bring you animals torn by wild beasts. I myself would bear the loss. You would require it from my hand, whether stolen by day or stolen by night. 40 I was consumed by heat during the day, consumed by frost during the night, and my sleep fled from my eyes. 41 This is how it’s been for me twenty years in your house. I served you fourteen years for your two daughters, and six years for your flocks—and you changed my salary ten times! 42 Had I not had the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, you would have sent me away empty-handed now. But God saw my misery and the toil of my hands and last night He became the Judge.”

43 In response Laban said to Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, and the sons are my sons, and the flocks are my flocks. Everything you see is mine. But what can I do for these, my daughters, today, or for their sons to whom they’ve given birth? 44 So now, come, let’s make a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between you and me.”

45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar, 46 and Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” So they took the stones and made a pile. Then they ate there on the pile. 47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha and Jacob called it Gal-ed. 48 And Laban said, “This pile is a witness between me and you today.” That is why its name is Gal-ed, 49 or Mizpah, for he said, “Let Adonai keep watch between you and me when we are out of one another’s sight. 50 If you mistreat my daughters, and if you take wives besides my daughters, though no one is with us, look! God is the witness between you and me.”

51 Laban said further to Jacob, “Behold, this pile, and this pillar which I’ve set up between you and me: 52 this pile serves as a witness, that I won’t pass by this pillar to go to you, and that you won’t pass by this pile and this pillar to go to me—with evil intent. 53 May the God of Abraham and the gods of Nahor, the gods of their father, judge between us.”

Jacob also made an oath by the fear of his father Isaac. 54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain and he invited his relatives to eat bread. So they ate bread and spent the night on the mountain.
