33 雅各举目观看，见以扫带着四百人来了；他就把孩子分开三队，交给利亚、拉结和两个婢女。 2 他叫两个婢女和她们的孩子走在前头，利亚和她的孩子跟着，拉结和约瑟走在最后。 3 他自己却走在他们前面，七次俯伏在地，直到走近他哥哥跟前。 4 以扫跑来迎接他，拥抱他，伏在他颈项上，与他亲吻；两个人都哭了。 5 以扫举目观看，看见妇人和孩子，就问：“这些与你同来的人是谁？”雅各回答：“是 神赐给你仆人的孩子。” 6 于是，两个婢女和她们的孩子上前下拜。 7 利亚和她的孩子也上前下拜，随后，约瑟和拉结也上前下拜。 8 以扫又问：“我遇见的这一群牲畜，是甚么意思呢？”雅各回答：“是要讨我主喜悦的。” 9 以扫说：“弟弟啊，我已经很富有了，你的仍归你吧。” 10 雅各说：“请不要这样，我若得你的喜悦，就求你从我手里收下这些礼物吧；因为我看见了你的面，就好象见了 神的面；你实在恩待了我。 11 请你收下我带来给你的礼物，因为 神施恩给我，我甚么都有了。”雅各再三恳求他，他才收下了。 12 以扫说：“我们起程前行吧，我和你一起走。” 13 雅各对他说：“我主知道孩子们还年幼娇嫩；牛羊也正在乳养的时候，需要我的照顾；如果要催赶牠们走一天的路，恐怕所有牲畜都要死了。 14 请我主在仆人前头先行；我要照着在我面前群畜和孩子们的速度，慢慢前行，直走到西珥我主那里去。” 15 以扫说：“让我把跟随我的人留几个在你这里吧。”雅各说：“为甚么要这样呢？只要我得我主的喜悦就是了。” 16 于是，以扫在那一天回西珥去了。 17 雅各却起程到疏割去，在那里为自己建造了一座房子，又为牲畜搭了些草棚，因此给那地方起名叫疏割。

18 雅各从巴旦．亚兰回来的时候，平平安安地到了迦南地的示剑城，在城的对面支搭了帐棚。 19 他支搭帐棚的那块地，是他用一百块银子向示剑的父亲哈抹的子孙买来的。 20 在那里雅各建了一座坛，给它起名叫伊利．伊罗伊．以色列。

33 雅各遠遠看見以掃帶著四百人迎面而來，便把孩子們分別交給利亞、拉結和兩個婢女， 2 又吩咐兩個婢女和她們的孩子走在前面，利亞和她的孩子跟在後面，拉結和約瑟走在最後。 3 他自己則走在他們前面，接連俯伏下拜七次，直到他哥哥跟前。
4 以掃見到雅各，就跑上去擁抱他，親吻他，二人抱頭痛哭。 5 以掃看見跟在雅各後面的婦女和孩子，就問：「這些和你同行的是誰？」雅各說：「這些孩子是上帝施恩賜給你僕人的。」 6 雅各的兩個婢女和她們的孩子上前下拜， 7 利亞也和她的孩子上前下拜，最後約瑟和拉結也上前向以掃下拜。
8 以掃說：「我在路上遇見的那一群群牲畜是怎麼回事？」雅各回答說：「我帶來這些是要得到我主的恩待。」 9 以掃說：「弟弟，我已經有很多了，你自己留著吧！」 10 雅各說：「不，你若賞臉，就請收下！我見了你的面就像見了上帝的面，因為你這樣善侍我。 11 請你收下我的禮物吧，因為上帝恩待了我，使我富足。」雅各再三懇求，以掃才收下。
12 以掃說：「我們走吧！我陪你們走。」 13 雅各卻說：「我主知道孩子們還小，而且，我還要照料正在哺乳的牛羊，如果整天趕路，牛羊會累死。 14 倒不如請我主先走，我遷就牲畜和孩子慢慢走，我在西珥與我主會合。」
15 以掃說：「讓我給你留幾個幫手吧。」雅各說：「不用了，能得到我主的恩待就夠了。」 16 於是，以掃在當天先回西珥去了， 17 雅各卻去了疏割，在那裡為自己建造房屋，為牲畜搭起棚子。因此那地方叫疏割[a]。
18 這樣，雅各從巴旦·亞蘭平安地回到迦南的示劍城，在城外搭營居住。 19 他搭營居住的這塊地是他用一百塊銀子向示劍的父親哈抹的子孫買的。 20 雅各在那裡築了一座壇，稱之為伊利·伊羅伊·以色列[b]。

33 Und Jakob erhob seine Augen und schaute, und siehe, Esau kam heran und 400 Mann mit ihm. Da verteilte er die Kinder auf Lea und auf Rahel und auf die beiden Mägde.
2 Und er stellte die Mägde mit ihren Kindern voran und Lea mit ihren Kindern danach und Rahel mit Joseph zuletzt.
3 Er selbst aber ging ihnen voraus und verneigte sich siebenmal zur Erde, bis er nahe zu seinem Bruder kam.
4 Da lief ihm Esau entgegen, umarmte ihn, fiel ihm um den Hals und küsste ihn; und sie weinten.
5 Als aber Esau seine Augen erhob, sah er die Frauen und die Kinder und sprach: Gehören diese dir? Er antwortete: Es sind die Kinder, mit denen Gott deinen Knecht begnadigt hat!
6 Da traten die Mägde herzu samt ihren Kindern und verneigten sich.
7 Auch Lea kam herbei mit ihren Kindern, und sie verneigten sich; danach kam Joseph mit Rahel herbei, und auch sie verneigten sich.
8 Und er fragte: Was willst du denn mit jenem ganzen Heer, dem ich begegnet bin? Jakob antwortete: Ich wollte Gnade finden in den Augen meines Herrn!
9 Esau antwortete: Ich habe genug, mein Bruder; behalte, was du hast!
10 Jakob antwortete: O nein! Habe ich Gnade vor deinen Augen gefunden, so nimm doch das Geschenk an von meiner Hand; denn deshalb habe ich dein Angesicht gesehen, als sähe ich Gottes Angesicht, und du warst so freundlich gegen mich!
11 Nimm doch den Segen, der dir überbracht worden ist, von mir an; denn Gott hat mich begnadigt, und ich bin mit allem versehen! So drang er in ihn, dass er es annehmen sollte.
12 Und Esau sprach: Lass uns aufbrechen und gehen; ich will neben dir herziehen!
13 Er aber antwortete: Mein Herr weiß, dass die Kinder noch zart sind; dazu habe ich säugende Schafe und Kühe bei mir; wenn sie einen einzigen Tag übertrieben würden, so würde mir die ganze Herde sterben.
14 Mein Herr möge doch seinem Knecht vorausgehen, ich aber will gemächlich hintennachziehen, wie eben das Vieh vor mir her und die Kinder gehen können, bis ich zu meinem Herrn nach Seir komme!
15 Da sprach Esau: So will ich doch einige von meinen Leuten bei dir lassen! Aber er sprach: Wozu das? Wenn ich nur Gnade finde vor den Augen meines Herrn!
16 So kehrte Esau am gleichen Tag wieder nach Seir zurück.
Die Ankunft Jakobs in Kanaan
17 Jakob aber brach auf nach Sukkot und baute sich dort ein Haus und errichtete für seine Herden Hütten; daher wurde der Ort Sukkot[a] genannt.
18 Und Jakob kam wohlbehalten bis zu der Stadt Sichem, die im Land Kanaan liegt, nachdem er aus Paddan-Aram gekommen war; und er lagerte sich der Stadt gegenüber.
19 Und er kaufte das Grundstück, auf dem er sein Zelt aufgeschlagen hatte, von der Hand der Söhne Hemors, des Vaters Sichems, für 100 Kesita,
20 und er errichtete dort einen Altar; den nannte er »Gott, der Gott Israels«[b].

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(A) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(B) 2 He put the female servants and their children(C) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(D) in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(E) seven times(F) as he approached his brother.
4 But Esau(G) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(H) And they wept.(I) 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.
Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(J)”
6 Then the female servants and their children(K) approached and bowed down.(L) 7 Next, Leah and her children(M) came and bowed down.(N) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(O) and they too bowed down.
8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(P)
“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(Q) he said.
9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(R) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(S) accept this gift(T) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(U) now that you have received me favorably.(V) 11 Please accept the present(W) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(X) and I have all I need.”(Y) And because Jacob insisted,(Z) Esau accepted it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(AA) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(AB) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(AC) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(AD)”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(AE)
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(AF) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(AG) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]
18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b](AH) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(AI) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(AJ) the father of Shechem,(AK) the plot of ground(AL) where he pitched his tent.(AM) 20 There he set up an altar(AN) and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]

33 And Jacob raised his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming and with him 400 men. So he divided the children to Leah and to Rachel and to the two maids.
2 And he put the maids and their children in front, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph last of all.
3 Then Jacob went over [the stream] before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.(A)
5 [Esau] looked up and saw the women and the children and said, Who are these with you? And [Jacob] replied, They are the children whom God has graciously given your servant.
6 Then the maids came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
7 And Leah also with her children came near, and they bowed themselves. After them Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed themselves.
8 Esau said, What do you mean by all this company which I met? And he said, These are that I might find favor in the sight of my lord.
9 And Esau said, I have plenty, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.
10 But Jacob replied, No, I beg of you, if now I have found favor in your sight, receive my gift that I am presenting; for truly to see your face is to me as if I had seen the face of God, and you have received me favorably.
11 Accept, I beg of you, my blessing and gift that I have brought to you; for God has dealt graciously with me and I have everything. And he kept urging him and he accepted it.
12 Then [Esau] said, Let us get started on our journey, and I will go before you.
13 But Jacob replied, You know, my lord, that the children are tender and delicate and need gentle care, and the flocks and herds with young are of concern to me; for if the men should overdrive them for a single day, the whole of the flocks would die.
14 Let my lord, I pray you, pass over before his servant; and I will lead on slowly, governed by [consideration for] the livestock that set the pace before me and the endurance of the children, [a]until I come to my lord in Seir.
15 Then Esau said, Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me. But [Jacob] said, What need is there for it? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.
16 So Esau turned back that day on his way to Seir.
17 But Jacob journeyed to Succoth and built himself a house and made booths or places of shelter for his livestock; so the name of the place is called Succoth [booths].
18 When Jacob came from Padan-aram, he arrived safely and in peace at the town of Shechem, in the land of Canaan, and pitched his tents before the [enclosed] town.
19 Then he bought the piece of land on which he had encamped from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money.
20 There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel [God, the God of Israel].
