Hezekiah Loses Health and Regains It through Prayer
20 In those days Hezekiah became deathly ill,[a] and Isaiah the son of Amoz the prophet came to him and said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Command your house, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’” 2 Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed to Yahweh, saying, 3 “O Yahweh, please remember how I went about before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and remember the good that I have done in your eyes.” Then Hezekiah wept bitterly.[b] 4 Isaiah had not gone out from the middle of the city when the word of Yahweh came to him, saying, 5 “Return; you must say to Hezekiah, the leader of my people, ‘Thus says Yahweh the God of David your ancestor,[c] “I have heard your prayer and I have seen your tears. Look, I am about to heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the temple of Yahweh. 6 I will add to your days fifteen years, and from the hand of the king of Assyria I will deliver you and this city. I will defend this city for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.”’” 7 Then Isaiah said, “Bring a lump of figs,” so they took and put it on the skin sores, and he lived.
8 Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What is the sign that Yahweh will heal me that I shall go up on the third day to the temple of Yahweh?” 9 Isaiah said, “This is the sign for you from Yahweh that Yahweh will do the thing that he has promised: Shall the shadow advance ten steps or shall it return ten steps?” 10 Hezekiah answered, “It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps. No, but let the shadow return backwards ten steps.” 11 Isaiah the prophet called to Yahweh, and he brought back the shadow on the steps where it had gone down on the steps of Ahaz, backwards ten steps.
Hezekiah Reveals Too Much to a Babylonian Envoy
12 At that time, Berodak-Baladan the son of Baladan king of Babylon[d] sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah, for he had heard that Hezekiah had been ill. 13 Hezekiah heard about them and showed them all of the house of his treasure, both the silver and the gold, the spices, the good olive oil, the room of his weapons, and all that could be found in his treasuries. There was nothing that he did not show them in his palace and in all of his kingdom. 14 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where have they come to you?” Hezekiah said, “From a far land; they have come from Babylon.” 15 Then he asked, “What did they see in your palace?” And Hezekiah said, “All that is in my palace they have seen; there is nothing that I did not show them in my treasuries.”
16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of Yahweh! 17 ‘Look, days are coming when all that is in your palace will be carried off; even all that your ancestors[e] have stored up until this day, to Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says Yahweh. 18 ‘Your sons who went out from you, whom you brought forth, will be taken, and they shall be eunuchs in the temple of the king of Babylon.’” 19 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of Yahweh which you have spoken is good,” and he thought, “Is it not that peace and security shall be in my days?” 20 Now the remainder of the acts of Hezekiah, all of his powerful deeds, and how he made the pool and the conduit and brought the water into the city, are they not written in the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Judah? 21 Then Hezekiah slept with his ancestors,[f] and Manasseh his son became king in his place.

20 In those days Hezekiah was sick unto the death; and Isaiah, the prophet, the son of Amoz, came to him, and said to him, The Lord God saith these things, Command to thine house, that is, make thy (last will and) testament/Dispose to thine house (Put thy house in order), for thou shalt die, and thou shalt not live.
2 And Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, and worshipped the Lord, and said,
3 I beseech, Lord, have mind, how I have gone before thee in truth, and in a perfect heart, and I did that, that was pleasant before thee. Then Hezekiah wept with a great weeping. (I beseech thee, Lord, remember, how I have gone before thee in truth, and with a perfect heart, and I did what was pleasing before thee. Then Hezekiah wept with a great weeping.)
4 And before that Isaiah went out half the part of the court(yard), the word of the Lord was made to Isaiah, and said,
5 Turn thou again, and say to Hezekiah, the duke of my people (Return thou, and say to Hezekiah, the leader, or the ruler, of my people), The Lord, (the) God of David, thy father, saith these things, I have heard thy prayer, and I saw thy tears, and lo! I have healed thee. In the third day thou shalt go up into the temple of the Lord,
6 and I shall add fifteen years to thy days; but also I shall deliver thee and this city from the hand of the king of Assyrians, and I shall defend this city for me, and for David, my servant (and I shall defend this city for my sake, and for the sake of my servant David).
7 And Isaiah said, Bring ye to me a gobbet of figs. And when they had brought it, and had put (it) on his botch/and had put it on the botch of Hezekiah, he was healed.
8 And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, What shall be the sign, that the Lord shall heal me, and also that in the third day I shall go up into the temple of the Lord?
9 To whom Isaiah said, This shall be a sign of the Lord, that the Lord shall do the word which he spake; wilt thou, that the shadow (of the sun) go further by ten lines, either turn again by so many degrees? (To whom Isaiah said, This shall be the sign from the Lord, that the Lord shall do the thing which he spoke; wilt thou, that the sun’s shadow go forward by ten degrees, or turn back by as many degrees?)
10 And Hezekiah said, It is light, or easy, that the shadow increase by ten lines, neither I will that this be done, but that it turn again backward by ten degrees. (And Hezekiah said, It is easy for the shadow to increase by ten degrees, so I do not desire that this be done, but rather, that it go backward by ten degrees.)
11 Then Isaiah, the prophet, called inwardly (upon) the Lord, and brought again backward by ten degrees the shadow by the same lines, by which it had gone down then in the horologe of Ahaz. (Then the prophet Isaiah inwardly called to the Lord, and brought the shadow backward by ten degrees, by the same lines by which it had gone forward on Ahaz’s sundial.)
12 In that time, Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, the king of Babylon, sent letters and gifts to Hezekiah; for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick, and had recovered. (Now at that time, Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, the king of Babylon, sent letters and gifts to Hezekiah; for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.)
13 And Hezekiah was glad in the coming of them (And Hezekiah welcomed the messengers), and he showed to them the house of spiceries, and (the) gold, and silver, and diverse pigments, (and) also (the) ointments, and the house of his vessels, and all (the) things that he might have in his treasures; there was not any word, or thing, in his house, and in all his power, that Hezekiah showed not to them.
14 Soothly Isaiah, the prophet, came to king Hezekiah, and said to him, What said these men, either from whence came they to thee? (And the prophet Isaiah came to King Hezekiah, and said to him, What did these men say to thee, and from where did they come?) To whom Hezekiah said, They came to me from a far land, from Babylon.
15 And he answered, What have they seen in thine house? Hezekiah said, They have seen all things, whatever things be in mine house; nothing is in my treasures, which I showed not to them. (And Isaiah asked, What have they seen in thy house? And Hezekiah said, They have seen everything that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasures, which I have not shown them.)
16 Therefore Isaiah said to Hezekiah, Hear thou the word of the Lord.
17 Lo! days (shall) come, and all things that be in thine house, and which things thy fathers made till into this day, shall be taken away into Babylon; not anything shall (still) dwell, saith the Lord (nothing shall be left, saith the Lord).
18 But also of thy sons, that shall go out of thee, which thou shalt beget, shall be taken [away], and they shall be geldings in the palace of the king of Babylon (and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon).
19 And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, The word of the Lord, which he spake, is good; only peace and truth be in my days. (And Hezekiah said to Isaiah, The word of the Lord, which thou spoke, is good; let there be only peace and truth in my days.)
20 Forsooth the residue of [the] words of Hezekiah, and all his strength, and how he made a cistern, and a water conduit, and brought water into the city, whether these be not written in the book of [the] words of [the] days of the kings of Judah?
21 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and Manasseh, his son, reigned for him.

20 In quei giorni Ezechia si ammalò mortalmente. Allora il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, si recò da lui e gli disse: «Cosí parla l'Eterno: "Metti la tua casa in ordine, perché morirai e non guarirai"».
2 Egli allora voltò la faccia verso la parete e pregò l'Eterno, dicendo:
3 «Ti supplico, o Eterno, ricordati come ho camminato davanti a te con fedeltà e con cuore integro e ho fatto ciò che è; bene ai tuoi occhi». Poi Ezechia scoppio in un gran pianto.
4 Isaia non era ancora giunto al cortile centrale che la parola dell'Eterno gli fu rivolta dicendo:
5 «Torna indietro e di' a Ezechia, principe del mio popolo: "Cosí parla l'Eterno, il DIO di Davide tuo padre: Ho udito la tua preghiera e ho visto le tue lacrime; ecco, io ti guarisco; nel terzo giorno salirai alla casa dell'Eterno.
6 Aggiungerò alla tua vita quindici anni, libererò te e questa città dalle mani del re di Assiria e proteggerò questa città per amore di me stesso e per amore di Davide mio servo"».
7 Poi Isaia disse: «Prendete un impiastro di fichi». Cosí essi lo presero e lo applicarono sull'ulcera, e il re guarí.
8 Or Ezechia disse a Isaia: «Qual è il segno che l'Eterno mi guarirà e che nel terzo giorno salirò alla casa dell'Eterno?».
9 Isaia allora gli rispose: «Questo è per te il segno da parte dell'Eterno che l'Eterno adempirà la cosa che ha detto: Vuoi che l'ombra avanzi di dieci gradini oppure retroceda di dieci gradini?».
10 Ezechia rispose: «E facile per l'ombra avanzare di dieci gradini. No! L'ombra retroceda piuttosto di dieci gradini».
11 Allora il profeta Isaia invocò l'Eterno, che fece retrocedere l'ombra di dieci gradini che essa aveva già percorso sulla scala di Achaz.
12 In quel tempo Berodak-Baladan, figlio di Baladan, re di Babilonia, mandò lettere e un dono a Ezechia, perché aveva sentito che Ezechia era stato ammalato.
13 Ezechia diede udienza agli inviati e mostrò loro tutta la casa del suo tesoro l'argento, l'oro, gli aromi, gli oli finissimi, il suo arsenale e tutto ciò che si trovava nei suoi magazzini. Non ci fu nulla nella sua casa e in tutti i suoi domini che Ezechia non facesse loro vedere.
14 Allora il profeta Isaia si recò dal re Ezechia e gli disse: «Che cosa hanno detto quegli uomini e da dove sono venuti a te?». Ezechia rispose: «Sono venuti da un paese lontano, da Babilonia».
15 Isaia disse: «Che cosa hanno visto in casa tua?». Ezechia rispose: «Hanno visto tutto ciò che si trova in casa mia, non c'è nulla nei miei magazzini che io non abbia fatto loro vedere».
16 Allora Isaia disse a Ezechia: «Ascolta la parola dell'Eterno:
17 "Ecco, verranno i giorni, quando tutto ciò che si trova in casa tua e tutto ciò che i tuoi padri hanno accumulato fino al giorno d'oggi, sarà portato in Babilonia; nulla sarà lasciato, dice l'Eterno.
18 Inoltre alcuni dei tuoi figli, che saranno usciti da te e che tu avrai generato saranno presi e diventeranno eunuchi nel palazzo del re di Babilonia"».
19 Ezechia rispose quindi a Isaia: «La parola dell'Eterno che tu hai pronunciato è buona». Egli infatti pensava: «Non sarà forse una bella cosa, se ci sarà pace e sicurezza durante la mia vita?».
20 Il resto delle gesta di Ezechia e tutte le sue prodezze, e come egli fece il serbatoio e l'acquedotto, mediante il quale condusse le acque nella città, non è scritto nel libro delle Cronache dei re di Giuda?
21 Poi Ezechia si addormentò con i suoi padri, e al suo posto regnò suo figlio Manasse.
