33 耶和华对摩西说：“我曾向亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各起誓，应许把迦南赐给他们的后代。现在你和你从埃及领出来的百姓要动身去那里。 2 我必差遣天使走在你们前面，赶出当地的迦南人、亚摩利人、赫人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人， 3 带你们进入那奶蜜之乡。但我不会跟你们一起去，免得我在途中就把你们灭绝了，因为你们是顽固不化的百姓。”
4 百姓听见这坏消息，都非常哀伤，不再佩戴饰物了。 5 耶和华对摩西说：“你去向以色列百姓宣布，‘你们这些顽固不化的人，我就是跟你们在一起待一刻，都恐怕会灭绝你们。现在你们要摘下自己身上的饰物，我再决定怎样处置你们。’” 6 因此，以色列百姓从何烈山开始就不再佩戴饰物了。
耶和华的会幕
7 摩西通常把帐幕支搭在营外离百姓较远的地方，摩西称帐幕为会幕。凡求问耶和华的，都会去那里。 8 当摩西离营去会幕的时候，百姓就都一同起来，各人站在自己的帐篷门口目送摩西走进会幕。 9 摩西进入会幕后，便有云柱降下来，停在会幕门口，耶和华就跟摩西说话。 10 每当百姓看见这景象，他们都站在自己的帐篷门口敬拜耶和华。 11 在会幕内，耶和华跟摩西面对面说话，好像两个朋友谈话一样。然后，摩西返回营中，但他的年轻助手、嫩的儿子约书亚仍然留在会幕。

12 摩西对耶和华说：“你吩咐我带领这些百姓，却没有告诉我你将要派谁与我同去，只说，‘我凭名字认识你，你在我面前蒙了恩。’ 13 我若已经在你面前蒙恩，就求你把你的道路指示我，好让我认识你，继续在你面前蒙恩。求你顾念这些百姓是你的子民。” 14 耶和华回答他说：“我必亲自与你同去，使你平安稳妥。” 15 摩西说：“你若不与我们同去，就不要让我们离开这里。 16 你若不与我们同去，谁会知道我和你的子民在你面前蒙了恩呢？岂不是因为你的同在才使我们不同于地上其他民族吗？”
17 耶和华回答说：“我答应你的请求，因为你在我面前蒙了恩，我凭名字认识你。” 18 摩西说：“求你向我彰显你的荣耀。” 19 耶和华说：“我必叫你看见我一切的美善，我要在你面前宣告我的名——耶和华，我要恩待谁就恩待谁，我要怜悯谁就怜悯谁。 20 但你不能看我的脸，因为凡看见的，都不能存活。 21 你要站在我旁边的磐石上， 22 我的荣耀经过你面前的时候，我会先把你安置在石缝里，用我的手遮掩你，直到我从你面前走过。 23 然后我会收回我的手，你就可以看见我的背，但看不到我的脸。”

33 And Hashem said unto Moshe, Depart, and go from here, thou and HaAm which thou hast brought up out of Eretz Mitzrayim, unto HaAretz which I swore unto Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Ya’akov, saying, Unto thy zera will I give it;
2 And I will send a Malach before thee; and I will drive out the Kena’ani, the Emori, the Chitti, the Perizzi, the Chivi, and the Yevusi;
3 Unto an Eretz zavat cholov and devash; for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art an Am Kesheh Oref (stiffnecked, obstinate people); lest I consume thee in HaDerech.
4 And when HaAm heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no ish did put on him his ornamental attire.
5 For Hashem had said unto Moshe, Say unto the Bnei Yisroel, Ye are an Am Kesheh Oref; I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee; therefore now put off thy ornamental attire from thee, that I may decide what to do unto thee.
6 And the Bnei Yisroel stripped themselves of their ornamental attire by Mt. Chorev.
7 And Moshe would take the Ohel, and pitch it outside the machaneh, afar off from the machaneh, and called it the Ohel Mo’ed. And it came to pass, that every one which sought Hashem went out unto the Ohel Mo’ed, which was outside the machaneh.
8 And it came to pass, when Moshe went out unto the Ohel, that kol HaAm rose up, and stood every man at his petach ohel, and watched after Moshe, until he was gone into the Ohel.
9 And it came to pass, as Moshe entered into the Ohel, the Ammud of the Anan descended, and stood at the petach Ohel, and Hashem would speak with Moshe.
10 And kol HaAm saw the Ammud of the Anan stand at the petach Ohel; and kol HaAm rose up and worshiped, every man in his petach ohel.
11 And Hashem spoke unto Moshe face to face, as an ish speaketh unto his re’a. And he returned into the machaneh; but his mesharet Yehoshua ben Nun, a na’ar, departed not out of the Ohel.
12 And Moshe said unto Hashem, See, Thou sayest unto me, Bring this people onward; and Thou hast not let me know whom Thou wilt send with me. Yet Thou hast said, I know thee by shem, and thou hast also found chen (grace, unmerited favor) in My sight.
13 Therefore, now, if I have found chen in Thy sight, show me now Thy Derech, that I may have da’as of Thee, that I may find chen in Thy sight; and consider that this nation is Thy people.
14 And He said, My Presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15 And he said unto Him, If Thy Presence go not with me, bring us not up from here [Sinai].
16 For how then shall it be known that I and Thy people have found chen in Thy sight? Is it not in that Thou goest with us? So shall we be made distinct as separate, I and Thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of ha’adamah.
17 And Hashem said unto Moshe, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken; for thou hast found chen in My sight, and I know thee by shem.
18 And he said, show me now Thy kavod.
19 And He said, I will make kol tuvi (all My goodness) pass in front of thee, and I will call out with the Shem of Hashem before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show rachamim on whom I will show rachamim.
20 And He said, Thou canst not see My face; for there shall no adam see Me, and live.
21 And Hashem said, Hinei, there is a place near Me, and thou shalt stand upon the tzur;
22 And it shall come to pass, while My kavod passeth by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the tzur, and will cover thee with My yad until I pass by;
23 And I will take away Mine yad, and thou shalt see My back; but My face shall not be seen.

33 Drottinn sagði við Móse: "Far nú héðan með fólkið, sem þú leiddir burt af Egyptalandi, til þess lands, sem ég sór Abraham, Ísak og Jakob, er ég sagði: ,Niðjum þínum vil ég gefa það.`
2 Ég vil senda engil á undan þér og reka burt Kanaaníta, Amoríta, Hetíta, Peresíta, Hevíta og Jebúsíta, _
3 til þess lands, sem flýtur í mjólk og hunangi, því að ekki vil ég sjálfur fara þangað með þér, af því að þú ert harðsvíraður lýður, að eigi tortími ég þér á leiðinni."
4 En er fólkið heyrði þennan ófögnuð, urðu þeir hryggir, og enginn maður bjó sig í skart.
5 Þá sagði Drottinn við Móse: "Seg Ísraelsmönnum: ,Þér eruð harðsvíraður lýður. Væri ég eitt augnablik með þér á leiðinni, mundi ég tortíma þér. Legg nú af þér skart þitt, svo að ég viti, hvað ég á að gjöra við þig."`
6 Þá lögðu Ísraelsmenn niður skart sitt undir Hórebfjalli og báru það eigi upp frá því.
7 Móse tók tjaldið og reisti það fyrir utan herbúðirnar, spölkorn frá þeim, og kallaði það samfundatjald, og varð hver sá maður, er leita vildi til Drottins, að fara út til samfundatjaldsins, sem var fyrir utan herbúðirnar.
8 Og þegar Móse gekk út til tjaldsins, þá stóð upp allur lýðurinn og gekk hver út í sínar tjalddyr og horfði á eftir honum, þar til er hann var kominn inn í tjaldið.
9 Er Móse var kominn inn í tjaldið, steig skýstólpinn niður og nam staðar við tjalddyrnar, og Drottinn talaði við Móse.
10 Og allur lýðurinn sá skýstólpann standa við tjalddyrnar. Stóð þá allt fólkið upp og féll fram, hver fyrir sínum tjalddyrum.
11 En Drottinn talaði við Móse augliti til auglitis, eins og maður talar við mann. Því næst gekk Móse aftur til herbúðanna, en þjónn hans, sveinninn Jósúa Núnsson, vék ekki burt úr tjaldinu.
12 Móse sagði við Drottin: "Sjá, þú segir við mig: ,Far með fólk þetta.` En þú hefir ekki látið mig vita, hvern þú ætlar að senda með mér. Og þó hefir þú sagt: ,Ég þekki þig með nafni, og þú hefir einnig fundið náð í augum mínum.`
13 Hafi ég nú fundið náð í augum þínum, þá bið ég: Gjör mér kunna þína vegu, að ég megi þekkja þig, svo að ég finni náð í augum þínum, og gæt þess, að þjóð þessi er þinn lýður."
14 Drottinn sagði: "Auglit mitt mun fara með og búa þér hvíld."
15 Móse sagði við hann: "Fari auglit þitt eigi með, þá lát oss eigi fara héðan.
16 Af hverju mega menn ella vita, að ég og lýður þinn hafi fundið náð í augum þínum? Hvort eigi af því, að þú farir með oss, og ég og þinn lýður verðum ágættir framar öllum þjóðum, sem á jörðu búa?"
17 Þá sagði Drottinn við Móse: "Einnig þetta, er þú nú mæltir, vil ég gjöra, því að þú hefir fundið náð í augum mínum, og ég þekki þig með nafni."
18 En Móse sagði: "Lát mig þá sjá dýrð þína!"
19 Hann svaraði: "Ég vil láta allan minn ljóma líða fram hjá þér, og ég vil kalla nafnið Drottinn frammi fyrir þér. Og ég vil líkna þeim, sem ég vil líkna, og miskunna þeim, sem ég vil miskunna."
20 Og enn sagði hann: "Þú getur eigi séð auglit mitt, því að enginn maður fær séð mig og lífi haldið."
21 Drottinn sagði: "Sjá, hér er staður hjá mér, og skalt þú standa uppi á berginu.
22 En þegar dýrð mín fer fram hjá, vil ég láta þig standa í bergskorunni, og mun ég byrgja þig með hendi minni, uns ég er kominn fram hjá.
23 En þegar ég tek hönd mína frá, munt þú sjá á bak mér. En auglit mitt fær enginn maður séð."
