上帝呼召摩西
3 摩西为岳父米甸祭司叶忒罗放羊。一天他领着羊群穿越旷野，来到上帝的山——何烈山。 2 忽然有耶和华的天使在荆棘里的火焰中向他显现。摩西看见荆棘虽然在燃烧，却没有被烧毁。 3 摩西想：“我要过去看这个奇异的景象，荆棘为什么没有被烧掉呢？” 4 耶和华上帝见他要上前观看，就从荆棘丛中呼唤他说：“摩西！摩西！”摩西说：“我在这里。” 5 上帝说：“别再靠近，脱下你脚上的鞋子，因为你所站的地方是圣地。” 6 又说：“我是你祖先的上帝，是亚伯拉罕的上帝，以撒的上帝，雅各的上帝。”摩西害怕看上帝，就把脸蒙起来。 7 耶和华说：“我已经看见我子民在埃及所受的苦难，听见了他们因监工的压迫而发出的呼求。我知道他们的痛苦。 8 我下来是要从埃及人手中救他们，带他们离开那里，到一个辽阔肥沃的奶蜜之乡，就是现在迦南人、赫人、亚摩利人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人居住的地方。 9 现在，以色列人的呼求传到我耳中，我也看到了埃及人怎样压迫他们。 10 现在去吧，我要派你到法老那里，带领我的以色列子民离开埃及。” 11 但摩西对上帝说：“我是谁啊？怎么能去见法老，把以色列人从埃及领出来呢？” 12 上帝说：“我必与你同在，你带百姓离开埃及后，你们必在这座山上事奉我——这将是我派你去的证据。” 13 摩西问上帝：“假如我到以色列人那里，对他们说，‘你们祖先的上帝派我来你们这里。’他们如果问我，‘祂叫什么名字？’我该怎样回答他们呢？” 14 上帝对摩西说：“我是自有永有者。你要这样回答以色列人，‘那位自有永有者派我到你们这里。’” 15 上帝又对摩西说：“你要告诉以色列人是我派遣你到他们那里，我是他们祖先的上帝耶和华，是亚伯拉罕的上帝，以撒的上帝，雅各的上帝。耶和华是我的名字，直到永远，世世代代的人都要这样称呼我。 16 你去招聚以色列的长老，对他们说，‘你们祖先的上帝耶和华，就是亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的上帝向我显现，说祂关切你们，知道你们在埃及的遭遇。 17 祂应许要带领你们脱离在埃及所受的苦难，到迦南人、赫人、亚摩利人、比利洗人，希未人和耶布斯人住的地方，那里是奶蜜之乡。’ 18 以色列的长老们必定听从你的话，你就跟他们一起去见埃及王，对他说，‘希伯来人的上帝耶和华向我们显现。现在请你容许我们走三天的路程，到旷野去，向我们的上帝耶和华献祭。’ 19 我也知道除非我用大能的手向他施压，不然埃及王不会让你们离开。 20 因此，我必伸手行各种神迹攻击埃及，之后他必让你们离开。 21 我必使埃及人恩待你们，好叫你们不致空手离开埃及。 22 你们的妇女只管向埃及邻居及住在邻居家的妇女索取金器、银器和衣服，给自己的儿女穿戴，你们必这样夺取埃及人的财物。”
上帝赐摩西能力
4 摩西回答说：“他们不会相信我或听我的话，他们会说，‘耶和华根本没有向你显现。’” 2 耶和华对摩西说：“你手里拿的是什么？”摩西说：“是一根手杖。” 3 耶和华说：“把它丢在地上！”于是，摩西把杖丢在地上，杖变成了一条蛇。摩西连忙跑开。 4 耶和华说：“你伸手抓住它的尾巴！”摩西就伸手抓蛇的尾巴，蛇在他手中变回了杖。 5 耶和华说：“这样，他们就会相信他们祖先的上帝耶和华，就是亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的上帝，曾经向你显现。”
6 耶和华又说：“把手放进怀里。”摩西把手放进怀里，手抽出来的时候，竟患了麻风病，像雪一样白。 7 耶和华说：“再把手放进怀里。”摩西又把手放进怀里，这次再抽出来的时候，手已经复原，跟其他地方的皮肉一样。 8 耶和华说：“纵然他们不听你的话，不信第一个神迹，也必定相信第二个神迹。 9 如果他们两个神迹都不相信，还是不听你的话，你就从尼罗河里取些水来倒在旱地上，那水就会在旱地上变成血。”
10 摩西对耶和华说：“主啊！我向来不善言辞，即使你对仆人说话以后，我还是不善言辞，因为我是个拙口笨舌的人。” 11 耶和华对他说：“是谁造人的口舌？是谁使人变成哑巴或聋子？是谁使人目明或眼瞎？不都是我耶和华吗？ 12 去吧！我必赐给你口才，指示你说什么话。” 13 但是摩西说：“主啊，请派其他人去吧。” 14 耶和华向摩西发怒说：“利未人亚伦不是你哥哥吗？他是个能言善辨的人，正要来迎接你。他见到你一定很欢喜。 15 你要把该说的话传给他，我会赐你们口才，教你们如何行事。 16 他要替你向百姓说话，做你的发言人，你对他来说就像上帝一样。 17 你要把手杖带在身边，以便行神迹。”
18 摩西回到家里，对他的岳父叶忒罗说：“求你让我回埃及去探望我的亲人，看看他们是否在世。”叶忒罗说：“你平安地去吧。” 19 耶和华在米甸对摩西说：“你只管放心回埃及去，想害你性命的人都已经死了。” 20 于是，摩西拿着上帝的杖，带着妻子和儿子骑驴返回埃及。 21 耶和华对摩西说：“你到了埃及，见到法老的时候，务要照我赐给你的能力在法老面前行神迹。但我要使他的心刚硬，他必不让百姓离开。 22 那时，你就告诉法老，‘耶和华说，以色列是我的长子， 23 我对你说过让我的长子出去事奉我，但你执意不肯。看啊，我要杀你的长子。’”
24 摩西在途中夜宿的时候，耶和华遇见摩西，想要杀他。 25 他的妻子西坡拉拿起锋利的火石，割下儿子的包皮，放在摩西脚前，说：“你真是我的血郎。” 26 这样，耶和华才没杀他。当时，西坡拉说“血郎”是指割礼一事。
27 耶和华对亚伦说：“你到旷野去迎接摩西。”他就在上帝的山上遇见摩西，并亲吻他。 28 摩西把耶和华吩咐他的以及要他行的神迹都告诉了亚伦。 29 摩西和亚伦一起回去招聚以色列的众长老， 30 亚伦把耶和华对摩西的吩咐详细地告诉他们。摩西又在百姓面前行了那些神迹， 31 百姓相信了。以色列人听见耶和华眷顾他们、看到了他们的苦难，都俯伏敬拜祂。
摩西和亚伦见法老
5 之后，摩西和亚伦去见法老，对他说：“以色列的上帝耶和华说，‘放我的子民走，让他们到旷野去为我守节期。’” 2 法老说：“耶和华是谁？我凭什么要听从祂，放走以色列人？我不认识祂，也不会让以色列人离开！” 3 摩西和亚伦说：“希伯来人的上帝向我们显现了。求你容我们走三天的路程，到旷野去向我们的上帝耶和华献祭，请你让我们去吧，免得祂用刀剑、瘟疫来攻击我们。” 4 埃及王说：“摩西、亚伦，你们竟敢煽动百姓旷工！快回去工作！” 5 法老又说：“这地方的以色列人如此众多，你竟叫他们停止工作！” 6 当天，法老就对埃及监工和以色列人的工头下令： 7 “从今天开始，不许再供应草给他们制砖，叫他们自己去捡， 8 但上交的砖的数量要和往常一样，一块也不可少。因为他们懒惰，所以才嚷着要去给他们的上帝献祭。 9 你们要加重他们的工作，他们就无暇再听那些蛊惑人心的话了！”
10 于是，那些监工和工头就出来向百姓宣布：“法老下令不再供应草给你们制砖。 11 你们要自己设法去找，但上交的砖一块也不能少。” 12 百姓只好在埃及全国收集碎禾秸当草用。 13 监工催逼他们说：“你们要完成每天规定的数目，像从前有草时一样。” 14 他们又鞭打以色列人的工头，说：“你们这两天为什么没有像从前一样完成规定的砖数？”
15 以色列人的工头来见法老，向他哀求说：“你为什么要这样对待仆人们？ 16 监工不给仆人们草，却命令我们做砖，还打我们，其实是你百姓的错。” 17 法老说：“你们是懒惰的人，懒惰的人！所以才嚷着要去给耶和华献祭。 18 回去继续工作！我不再供应草给你们，但砖要如数交齐。” 19 以色列人的工头听见每天做的砖数不可减少，就知道情况不妙。 20 他们从法老那里出来的时候，遇见摩西和亚伦站在外面等候， 21 便埋怨二人说：“愿耶和华鉴察、惩罚你们！你们使我们在法老和他的臣仆面前有了臭名，使他们有借口来杀我们。”
22 摩西回到耶和华那里说：“主啊！你为什么这样苦待你的子民呢？为什么要派我去呢？ 23 自从我去法老那里奉你的名发言后，他更加虐待你的子民，你并没有拯救他们。”
上帝应许拯救以色列人
6 耶和华对摩西说：“你就要看见我怎样用大能的手对付法老，那时他会让以色列人走，甚至把他们赶出埃及！” 2 上帝又对摩西说：“我是耶和华， 3 我曾以全能上帝的身份向亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各显现，但没有让他们知道我的名字是耶和华。 4 我向他们坚守所立的约，要把他们寄居的迦南赐给他们。 5 我已听见以色列人因受埃及人的奴役而发出的呼求，也想起了我的约。 6 所以，你要转告以色列人说，‘我是耶和华。我要伸出臂膀重重地惩罚埃及，救赎你们脱离埃及人的辖制，脱离他们的奴役。 7 我要接纳你们做我的子民，我要做你们的上帝。这样，你们就知道我是你们的上帝耶和华，曾救你们脱离埃及人的辖制。 8 我必带领你们进入我举手起誓要给亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的那片土地，把它赐给你们作产业。我是耶和华。’”
9 摩西把这番话转告百姓，可是他们因为残酷的劳役无比沮丧，不肯听他的话。 10 耶和华对摩西说： 11 “你再去见法老，要他让以色列人离开他的土地。” 12 摩西却说：“以色列人都不听我的话，法老又怎么肯听我这拙口笨舌的人呢？” 13 耶和华吩咐摩西和亚伦回到以色列人和法老那里，要他们领以色列人离开埃及。
摩西和亚伦的族谱
14 以下是以色列各宗族族长的名字：
以色列长子吕便的儿子是哈诺、法路、希斯仑和迦米。这些是吕便的宗族。
15 西缅的儿子是耶姆利、雅悯、阿辖、雅斤、琐辖和扫罗，扫罗的母亲是迦南人。这些是西缅的各宗族。
16 利未的儿子依次是革顺、哥辖和米拉利，利未享年一百三十七岁。 17 革顺的儿子是立尼和示每，二人各成宗族。 18 哥辖的儿子是暗兰、以斯哈、希伯仑和乌薛，哥辖享年一百三十三岁。 19 米拉利的儿子是抹利和姆示。这些是利未的各宗族。 20 暗兰娶了他父亲的妹妹约基别，生了亚伦和摩西，暗兰享年一百三十七岁。 21 哥辖另一个儿子以斯哈生了可拉、尼斐和细基利。 22 乌薛的儿子是米沙利、以利撒反和西提利。 23 亚伦与亚米拿达的女儿、拿顺的妹妹以利沙巴结婚，生了拿答、亚比户、以利亚撒和以他玛。 24 可拉的儿子是亚惜、以利加拿和亚比亚撒，这些是可拉的各宗族。 25 亚伦的儿子以利亚撒与普铁的一个女儿结婚，生了非尼哈。以上是利未各宗族的族长。
26 正是亚伦和摩西受耶和华之命，要按以色列人的宗族支派把他们带出埃及。 27 也是这二人要求埃及王法老让他们把以色列人带出埃及。 28 那时，耶和华曾经在埃及对摩西说： 29 “我是耶和华，你要把我吩咐你的一切话告诉埃及王法老。” 30 摩西却对耶和华说：“你看，我拙口笨舌，法老怎肯听我的话？”
亚伦和摩西面见法老
7 耶和华对摩西说：“我要使你在法老面前像上帝一样，你哥哥亚伦是你的发言人。 2 你要把我吩咐你的话告诉你哥哥亚伦，由他要求法老让以色列人离开埃及。 3 可是，我要使法老的心刚硬，虽然我在埃及行许多神迹奇事， 4 他将无动于衷。那时，我必伸手重重地惩罚埃及，然后领我的大队子民离开埃及。 5 埃及人看见我伸手攻击他们、把以色列人带出埃及，就会知道我是耶和华。” 6 摩西和亚伦便遵命而行。 7 去见法老的时候，摩西八十岁，亚伦八十三岁。
8 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说： 9 “倘若法老要你们行神迹给他看，你就吩咐亚伦把手杖丢在法老面前，使杖变作蛇。”
10 摩西和亚伦照耶和华的吩咐来到法老面前。亚伦把手杖丢在法老和他的臣仆面前，杖就变作蛇。 11 法老召他的谋士和巫师前来，这些人是埃及的术士，他们也用邪术如法炮制。 12 各人将自己的手杖扔在地上，杖就变作蛇，但亚伦的杖吞噬了他们的杖。 13 法老却仍然硬着心，不肯听从摩西和亚伦，正如耶和华所言。
水变血之灾
14 耶和华对摩西说：“法老非常顽固，不肯释放百姓。 15 明天早晨，法老会去尼罗河边，你就在那里等他，要拿着曾变成蛇的手杖。 16 你要对他说，‘希伯来人的上帝耶和华差遣我来告诉你，要让祂的子民到旷野去事奉祂，但到如今你还是不肯。 17 所以祂说要用手杖击打尼罗河水，使河水变成血，好叫你知道祂是耶和华。 18 河里的鱼会死，河水会发臭，埃及人不能再喝尼罗河的水。’”
19 耶和华对摩西说：“你告诉亚伦，让他向埃及境内的各江河、溪流、池塘伸杖，使水变成血。埃及境内，包括木桶和石缸里将到处是血。” 20 摩西和亚伦就按着耶和华所吩咐的去做，亚伦在法老和埃及众臣仆面前举杖击打尼罗河水，河水都变成了血。 21 河里的鱼都死了，河水臭得不能饮用。埃及遍地都是血。 22 可是，法老的巫师也一样用邪术使水变成血。法老的心仍然刚硬，不肯听从摩西和亚伦的话，正如耶和华所言。 23 法老若无其事地转身回宫去了。 24 因为河水不能饮用，埃及人就在尼罗河两岸掘井取水饮用。
25 击打河水后，七天过去了。
蛙灾
8 耶和华对摩西说：“你进宫去告诉法老，‘耶和华说，让以色列百姓离开，好事奉我。 2 如果你不听从，我就使青蛙来毁坏你的国土。 3 尼罗河将充满青蛙，它们要跳到你的宫里、卧室和床铺上，你的臣仆和百姓家里，你的炉灶和揉面盆里。 4 青蛙还会跳到你和你的百姓及众臣仆身上。’”
5 耶和华对摩西说：“你叫亚伦向埃及各地的江河、溪流和池塘伸杖，使青蛙遍布埃及全境。” 6 亚伦伸杖，青蛙就遍布了埃及全境。 7 巫师也行邪术如法炮制，叫青蛙上来。 8 法老召摩西和亚伦进宫，对他们说：“你们快求耶和华，使这些青蛙离开我们，我便让百姓去献祭给耶和华。” 9 摩西对法老说：“好吧，你要我在什么时候为你以及你的臣仆和百姓祷告，叫这些青蛙离开你和你的宫殿，只留在河里呢？” 10 法老说：“明天。”摩西说：“就照你说的，这样你就知道没有神明能比得上我们的上帝耶和华。 11 明天青蛙会离开你、你的宫殿、你的臣仆和百姓，只留在河里。” 12 摩西和亚伦离开法老后，摩西就为法老所受的蛙灾一事向耶和华呼求。 13 耶和华答应了摩西的祈求。凡在房屋内、院子里和田野中的青蛙都死了。 14 百姓把青蛙的尸体堆积起来，埃及全境都充满了死青蛙的腐臭气味。 15 法老看见灾难已经过去，便又硬着心，不肯听从摩西和亚伦的话，正如耶和华所言。
虱灾
16 耶和华对摩西说：“你吩咐亚伦用杖击打地上的尘土，使埃及境内的尘土变成虱子。” 17 他们就照上帝的吩咐去做，亚伦伸杖击打地上的尘土，虱子就跑到人和牲畜身上，全埃及的尘土都变成了虱子。 18 巫师们也试图用邪术变出虱子来，却无法成功。埃及的百姓和牲畜身上长满了虱子。 19 巫师们对法老说：“这是上帝的作为。”法老的心却仍然刚硬，不肯答应摩西和亚伦的要求，正如耶和华所言。
苍蝇之灾
20 耶和华对摩西说：“明天清早，你趁法老去河边时去见他，告诉他，‘耶和华说，放我的子民走，他们好事奉我， 21 不然，我就叫无数的苍蝇飞到你、你的臣仆和百姓身上，进到你们各自的家中，使埃及遍地布满苍蝇。 22 但那天，我子民居住的歌珊却丝毫不会受搅扰，这样你就知道我耶和华主宰天下。 23 我要把我的子民跟你的百姓分开，明天我必行这神迹。’” 24 耶和华果然这样行。密密麻麻的苍蝇飞进法老的王宫和他臣仆的家里，埃及全国都受到苍蝇的毁坏。 25 法老召见摩西和亚伦，对他们说：“你们可以去献祭给你们的上帝，不过要在我的境内举行。” 26 摩西说：“这怎么行？我们用来献祭的东西，是埃及人最憎恶的。如果我们在埃及境内举行这样的仪式，他们一定会拿石头打死我们。 27 我们要照我们上帝耶和华的吩咐离开这里，走三天的路程到旷野去献祭给祂。” 28 法老说：“好，我让你们去旷野献祭给你们的上帝耶和华，只是不要走得太远。现在为我祈求吧。” 29 摩西说：“我离开这里就去祈求耶和华，使苍蝇明天就离开你及你的臣仆和百姓，但这次你不可再食言，阻止以色列人去向耶和华献祭。” 30 摩西说完以后，便离开王宫，去祈求耶和华。 31 耶和华就照摩西的祈求，使成群的苍蝇离开法老及其臣仆和百姓，一只也没有留下。 32 这一次，法老又硬着心，不肯让百姓离开埃及。
瘟疫之灾
9 耶和华对摩西说：“你再进宫见法老，告诉他，‘希伯来人的上帝耶和华说，让我的子民去事奉我。 2 如果你不让他们走，继续扣留他们， 3 我就会使你田间所有的牲畜，包括马、驴、骆驼和牛羊，都染上严重的瘟疫。 4 但我要把埃及和以色列的牲畜分开，以色列人的牲畜必丝毫无损。’” 5 耶和华定了日期，说：“明天耶和华必在此地行这事。” 6 第二天，耶和华就这样行了，埃及的牲畜都死了，但以色列人的牲畜一头也没死。 7 法老派人去探查，发现以色列人的牲畜真的安然无恙。可是，他仍然顽固，不肯让以色列人离开。
脓疮之灾
8 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说：“你们去取几把窑里的灰，摩西要在法老面前把灰抛向空中。 9 这灰要变成尘土，散布在埃及每一个角落，落在人或牲畜身上，就会起疱长疮。” 10 摩西和亚伦便取了一些窑里的灰，站在法老面前，摩西把灰抛向空中，埃及人和牲畜身上就开始起疱长疮。 11 埃及的巫师无法与摩西对抗，因为他们及所有埃及人身上都长了脓疮。 12 耶和华使法老的心刚硬，他就不听他们的话，正如耶和华对摩西说的。
冰雹之灾
13 耶和华对摩西说：“明天一早你再去见法老，对他说，‘希伯来人的上帝耶和华这样说，你要让我的子民出去事奉我。 14 这一次，我要降下大灾祸在你及你的臣仆和百姓身上，好叫你知道普天之下我独一无二。 15 我若用瘟疫攻击你和你的百姓，你们早就灭亡了。 16 我让你活到现在，是为了向你彰显我的权能，使我的名传遍天下。 17 但你竟然在我的子民面前狂傲自大，不让他们离开。 18 明天这个时候，我要使天上降下大冰雹，是你们埃及立国以来从没有见过的。 19 现在，你要叫人赶快到田间把牲畜和属于你的一切都带到安全的地方。凡留在田间的人或牲畜都会被冰雹打死。’” 20 有些法老的臣仆听了耶和华的话就很害怕，赶忙把在田间的仆人和牲畜都召回屋里。 21 但那些不把耶和华的话放在心上的，仍把他们的奴仆和牲畜留在田间。 22 耶和华对摩西说：“你向天伸杖，天就会降下冰雹，落在埃及的一切人畜身上，摧毁田间的一切农作物。” 23 摩西向天伸出手杖，耶和华就发出雷电和冰雹，火光飞向大地。耶和华在埃及降下冰雹。 24 那时冰雹夹杂着火降下来，极为严重，在埃及史无前例。 25 冰雹摧毁了埃及境内田间的一切，包括人和牲畜，摧毁了田里的一切作物，打断了所有的树木， 26 只有以色列人所住的歌珊没有冰雹。 27 法老派人召来摩西和亚伦，对他们说：“这次我犯罪了，耶和华是对的，我和我的百姓错了。 28 请你们向耶和华祷告，好止住雷电和冰雹。我准许以色列人出去，你们不必再留在这里了。” 29 摩西回答说：“我一出城，就向耶和华举手祷告，雷电和冰雹必立刻停止，这样你就知道普天下都属于耶和华。 30 但我知道你和你的臣仆还是不敬畏上帝耶和华。”
31 这场冰雹发生在大麦吐穗和亚麻开花的时候。 32 小麦和粗麦较晚成熟，没有被冰雹打坏。 33 摩西离开法老，走出城外向耶和华举手祷告，雷和冰雹便停止了，豪雨也不下了。 34 法老看见灾祸停止，就又犯罪，他和他的臣仆都心里顽固。 35 法老硬着心，不让以色列人离开，正如耶和华借摩西所言。
蝗虫之灾
10 耶和华对摩西说：“你去见法老，我已使他和他臣仆的心刚硬，好在他们当中行我这些神迹。 2 这样，你就可以把我如何严惩埃及人以及我在他们当中所行的神迹告诉你的子孙，好叫你们知道我是耶和华。”
3 摩西和亚伦便进宫去见法老，对他说：“希伯来人的上帝耶和华说，‘你要到什么时候才肯在我面前谦卑下来，让我的子民离开这里去事奉我？ 4 这次你若再不答应，明天我要使蝗虫飞入你的国境。 5 它们铺天盖地，要吃光冰雹过后田间所剩的，包括一切树木。 6 你的王宫及臣仆和所有埃及人的房屋都要布满蝗虫，这是你祖祖辈辈从未见过的蝗灾。’”摩西说完，便转身离开法老。
7 臣仆对法老说：“这个人还要给我们添多少麻烦呢？让他们离开去事奉他们的上帝耶和华吧！埃及已经快崩溃了，你不知道吗？” 8 法老便召摩西和亚伦进宫，对他们说：“你们去事奉你们的上帝耶和华吧！但你们谁要去呢？” 9 摩西回答说：“我们男女老幼都要去，还有我们的牛群和羊群，因为我们要去守耶和华的节期，向祂献祭。” 10 法老听后，说：“我若让你们带走妇女和孩子，最好耶和华能保护你们！你们真是居心叵测。 11 不行！只有男子可以去事奉耶和华，这是你们一直要求的。”法老说完，便下令把他们赶出去。
12 耶和华对摩西说：“你向埃及伸杖，使蝗虫飞来吃尽冰雹过后剩下的植物。” 13 摩西就向埃及伸杖。耶和华使东风在埃及境内刮了整整一天一夜，到早晨，东风带来了蝗虫。 14 埃及到处都布满了蝗虫，数目之多实在是空前绝后。 15 整个埃及铺满蝗虫，地上一片黑暗。这些蝗虫吃尽了冰雹过后剩下的农作物和树上的果子，没有留下一点青绿。 16 法老急忙召见摩西和亚伦，对他们说：“我得罪了你们的上帝耶和华，又得罪了你们。 17 现在求你饶恕我的罪，就这一次，为我祈求你们的上帝耶和华撤去这场死亡之灾吧！” 18 摩西就离开法老出去祈求耶和华， 19 耶和华就把风向倒转，变成猛烈的西风，把蝗虫刮走，吹进红海。埃及境内一只蝗虫也没留下。 20 可是，耶和华又使法老心硬，不让以色列人离开埃及。
黑暗之灾
21 耶和华对摩西说：“你向天伸杖，使埃及全境漆黑一片，那黑暗浓得甚至可以摸到。” 22 摩西向天伸杖，埃及全境便漆黑了三天之久。 23 埃及人彼此看不见，谁也不敢移动半步。可是，以色列人住的地方却有光。 24 法老把摩西召来，对他说：“去吧，带着你们的妇女和孩子去事奉耶和华吧，但你们要把牛羊留下。” 25 摩西回答说：“你要让我们带走牛羊，因为它们是献给我们上帝耶和华的祭物和燔祭牲。 26 我们要带走所有的牲畜，一只蹄子也不留下，因为我们要从其中选一些来献给我们的上帝耶和华。我们抵达目的地前，还不知道把哪些献给祂。” 27 但耶和华使法老的心刚硬，不肯让以色列百姓离开。 28 法老对摩西说：“给我滚出去！不要再让我见到你，因为你再见我面之日必死。” 29 摩西回答说：“你说得好，我必不再见你的面。”
灭长子之灾
11 耶和华对摩西说：“我给法老和埃及再降下一场灾难，之后他必放你们走，甚至是迫不及待地赶你们走。 2 你要告诉以色列人，不论男女，去向邻近的埃及人索取金器银器。” 3 耶和华使埃及人恩待以色列人，法老的臣仆和百姓极其尊重摩西。
4 摩西说：“耶和华说，‘今晚半夜，我要走遍埃及。 5 埃及境内，从坐王位的法老的长子到推磨的女奴的长子，以及所有头生的牲畜，都必死亡。 6 那时整个埃及必充满悲惨的哭号声，惨况空前绝后。 7 但在以色列人中，连狗也不会向人或牲畜吠叫，这样你们就知道耶和华将把埃及人和以色列人分开。 8 到那天，你所有的臣仆都要来俯伏在我面前，求我和跟随我的百姓离开这里。那时我才会离开。’”摩西说完便怒气冲冲地离开法老。 9 耶和华曾对摩西说：“法老一定不肯听你的话，因此我要在埃及多行神迹。” 10 摩西和亚伦在法老面前行了这一切的神迹，但耶和华使法老的心刚硬，他不让以色列人离开他的国土。
逾越节
12 耶和华在埃及对摩西和亚伦说： 2 “从现在开始，你们要以这个月为一月，为一年之首。 3 你要向以色列全体会众宣布，本月的第十日，每家都要预备一只羊羔，一家一只。 4 倘若家人太少，吃不了一只，可以跟最近的邻居共享一只，你们要按人数和各人的食量预备羊羔。 5 羊羔必须是毫无残疾、一岁的公绵羊或公山羊。 6 全体会众要把羊留到本月十四日，在黄昏时分宰杀， 7 然后取点血涂在房子的门框和门楣上，全家要在房子里吃羊肉。 8 当晚，你们要用火把羊肉烤熟，与无酵饼和苦菜一起吃。 9 不可吃生羊肉，也不可煮着吃，要把整只羊，连头带腿和内脏一并烤着吃。 10 不可把肉留到早晨，留到早晨的肉要烧掉。 11 你们吃的时候，要束腰、穿鞋、手中拿杖，要赶快吃，这是耶和华的逾越节。
12 “因为那一夜我要巡遍埃及，把境内所有长子和头生的牲畜全都杀掉，也要严惩埃及所有的神明。我是耶和华。 13 涂在你们房屋上的血是一个记号，我见到这血就会越过你们。我击打埃及的时候，那灾祸不会落到你们身上。

上帝呼召摩西

上帝賜摩西能力
4 摩西回答說：「他們不會相信我或聽我的話，他們會說，『耶和華根本沒有向你顯現。』」 2 耶和華對摩西說：「你手裡拿的是什麼？」摩西說：「是一根手杖。」 3 耶和華說：「把它丟在地上！」於是，摩西把杖丟在地上，杖變成了一條蛇。摩西連忙跑開。 4 耶和華說：「你伸手抓住牠的尾巴！」摩西就伸手抓蛇的尾巴，蛇在他手中變回了杖。 5 耶和華說：「這樣，他們就會相信他們祖先的上帝耶和華，就是亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的上帝，曾經向你顯現。」
6 耶和華又說：「把手放進懷裡。」摩西把手放進懷裡，手抽出來的時候，竟患了痲瘋病，像雪一樣白。 7 耶和華說：「再把手放進懷裡。」摩西又把手放進懷裡，這次再抽出來的時候，手已經復原，跟其他地方的皮肉一樣。 8 耶和華說：「縱然他們不聽你的話，不信第一個神蹟，也必定相信第二個神蹟。 9 如果他們兩個神蹟都不相信，還是不聽你的話，你就從尼羅河裡取些水來倒在旱地上，那水就會在旱地上變成血。」
10 摩西對耶和華說：「主啊！我向來不善言辭，即使你對僕人說話以後，我還是不善言辭，因為我是個拙口笨舌的人。」 11 耶和華對他說：「是誰造人的口舌？是誰使人變成啞巴或聾子？是誰使人目明或眼瞎？不都是我耶和華嗎？ 12 去吧！我必賜給你口才，指示你說什麼話。」 13 但是摩西說：「主啊，請派其他人去吧。」 14 耶和華向摩西發怒說：「利未人亞倫不是你哥哥嗎？他是個能言善辯的人，正要來迎接你。他見到你一定很歡喜。 15 你要把該說的話傳給他，我會賜你們口才，教你們如何行事。 16 他要替你向百姓說話，做你的發言人，你對他來說就像上帝一樣。 17 你要把手杖帶在身邊，以便行神蹟。」
18 摩西回到家裡，對他的岳父葉忒羅說：「求你讓我回埃及去探望我的親人，看看他們是否在世。」葉忒羅說：「你平安地去吧。」 19 耶和華在米甸對摩西說：「你只管放心回埃及去，想害你性命的人都已經死了。」 20 於是，摩西拿著上帝的杖，帶著妻子和兒子騎驢返回埃及。 21 耶和華對摩西說：「你到了埃及，見到法老的時候，務要照我賜給你的能力在法老面前行神蹟。但我要使他的心剛硬，他必不讓百姓離開。 22 那時，你就告訴法老，『耶和華說，以色列是我的長子， 23 我對你說過讓我的長子出去事奉我，但你執意不肯。看啊，我要殺你的長子。』」
24 摩西在途中夜宿的時候，耶和華遇見摩西，想要殺他。 25 他的妻子西坡拉拿起鋒利的火石，割下兒子的包皮，放在摩西腳前，說：「你真是我的血郎。」 26 這樣，耶和華才沒殺他。當時，西坡拉說「血郎」是指割禮一事。
27 耶和華對亞倫說：「你到曠野去迎接摩西。」他就在上帝的山上遇見摩西，並親吻他。 28 摩西把耶和華吩咐他的以及要他行的神蹟都告訴了亞倫。 29 摩西和亞倫一起回去招聚以色列的眾長老， 30 亞倫把耶和華對摩西的吩咐詳細地告訴他們。摩西又在百姓面前行了那些神蹟， 31 百姓相信了。以色列人聽見耶和華眷顧他們、看到了他們的苦難，都俯伏敬拜祂。
摩西和亞倫見法老
5 之後，摩西和亞倫去見法老，對他說：「以色列的上帝耶和華說，『放我的子民走，讓他們到曠野去為我守節期。』」 2 法老說：「耶和華是誰？我憑什麼要聽從祂，放走以色列人？我不認識祂，也不會讓以色列人離開！」 3 摩西和亞倫說：「希伯來人的上帝向我們顯現了。求你容我們走三天的路程，到曠野去向我們的上帝耶和華獻祭，請你讓我們去吧，免得祂用刀劍、瘟疫來攻擊我們。」 4 埃及王說：「摩西、亞倫，你們竟敢煽動百姓曠工！快回去工作！」 5 法老又說：「這地方的以色列人如此眾多，你竟叫他們停止工作！」 6 當天，法老就對埃及監工和以色列人的工頭下令： 7 「從今天開始，不許再供應草給他們製磚，叫他們自己去撿， 8 但上交的磚的數量要和往常一樣，一塊也不可少。因為他們懶惰，所以才嚷著要去給他們的上帝獻祭。 9 你們要加重他們的工作，他們就無暇再聽那些蠱惑人心的話了！」
10 於是，那些監工和工頭就出來向百姓宣佈：「法老下令不再供應草給你們製磚。 11 你們要自己設法去找，但上交的磚一塊也不能少。」 12 百姓只好在埃及全國收集碎禾稭當草用。 13 監工催逼他們說：「你們要完成每天規定的數目，像從前有草時一樣。」 14 他們又鞭打以色列人的工頭，說：「你們這兩天為什麼沒有像從前一樣完成規定的磚數？」
15 以色列人的工頭來見法老，向他哀求說：「你為什麼要這樣對待僕人們？ 16 監工不給僕人們草，卻命令我們做磚，還打我們，其實是你百姓的錯。」 17 法老說：「你們是懶惰的人，懶惰的人！所以才嚷著要去給耶和華獻祭。 18 回去繼續工作！我不再供應草給你們，但磚要如數交齊。」 19 以色列人的工頭聽見每天做的磚數不可減少，就知道情況不妙。 20 他們從法老那裡出來的時候，遇見摩西和亞倫站在外面等候， 21 便埋怨二人說：「願耶和華鑒察、懲罰你們！你們使我們在法老和他的臣僕面前有了臭名，使他們有藉口來殺我們。」
22 摩西回到耶和華那裡說：「主啊！你為什麼這樣苦待你的子民呢？為什麼要派我去呢？ 23 自從我去法老那裡奉你的名發言後，他更加虐待你的子民，你並沒有拯救他們。」
上帝應許拯救以色列人
6 耶和華對摩西說：「你就要看見我怎樣用大能的手對付法老，那時他會讓以色列人走，甚至把他們趕出埃及！」 2 上帝又對摩西說：「我是耶和華， 3 我曾以全能上帝的身份向亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各顯現，但沒有讓他們知道我的名字是耶和華。 4 我向他們堅守所立的約，要把他們寄居的迦南賜給他們。 5 我已聽見以色列人因受埃及人的奴役而發出的呼求，也想起了我的約。 6 所以，你要轉告以色列人說，『我是耶和華。我要伸出臂膀重重地懲罰埃及，救贖你們脫離埃及人的轄制，脫離他們的奴役。 7 我要接納你們做我的子民，我要做你們的上帝。這樣，你們就知道我是你們的上帝耶和華，曾救你們脫離埃及人的轄制。 8 我必帶領你們進入我舉手起誓要給亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的那片土地，把它賜給你們作產業。我是耶和華。』」
9 摩西把這番話轉告百姓，可是他們因為殘酷的勞役無比沮喪，不肯聽他的話。 10 耶和華對摩西說： 11 「你再去見法老，要他讓以色列人離開他的土地。」 12 摩西卻說：「以色列人都不聽我的話，法老又怎麼肯聽我這拙口笨舌的人呢？」 13 耶和華吩咐摩西和亞倫回到以色列人和法老那裡，要他們領以色列人離開埃及。
摩西和亞倫的族譜
14 以下是以色列各宗族族長的名字：
以色列長子呂便的兒子是哈諾、法路、希斯崙和迦米。這些是呂便的宗族。
15 西緬的兒子是耶姆利、雅憫、阿轄、雅斤、瑣轄和掃羅，掃羅的母親是迦南人。這些是西緬的各宗族。
16 利未的兒子依次是革順、哥轄和米拉利，利未享年一百三十七歲。 17 革順的兒子是立尼和示每，二人各成宗族。 18 哥轄的兒子是暗蘭、以斯哈、希伯崙和烏薛，哥轄享年一百三十三歲。 19 米拉利的兒子是抹利和姆示。這些是利未的各宗族。 20 暗蘭娶了他父親的妹妹約基別，生了亞倫和摩西，暗蘭享年一百三十七歲。 21 哥轄另一個兒子以斯哈生了可拉、尼斐和細基利。 22 烏薛的兒子是米沙利、以利撒反和西提利。 23 亞倫與亞米拿達的女兒、拿順的妹妹以利沙巴結婚，生了拿答、亞比戶、以利亞撒和以他瑪。 24 可拉的兒子是亞惜、以利加拿和亞比亞撒，這些是可拉的各宗族。 25 亞倫的兒子以利亞撒與普鐵的一個女兒結婚，生了非尼哈。以上是利未各宗族的族長。

亞倫和摩西面見法老
7 耶和華對摩西說：「我要使你在法老面前像上帝一樣，你哥哥亞倫是你的發言人。 2 你要把我吩咐你的話告訴你哥哥亞倫，由他要求法老讓以色列人離開埃及。 3 可是，我要使法老的心剛硬，雖然我在埃及行許多神蹟奇事， 4 他將無動於衷。那時，我必伸手重重地懲罰埃及，然後領我的大隊子民離開埃及。 5 埃及人看見我伸手攻擊他們、把以色列人帶出埃及，就會知道我是耶和華。」 6 摩西和亞倫便遵命而行。 7 去見法老的時候，摩西八十歲，亞倫八十三歲。
8 耶和華對摩西和亞倫說： 9 「倘若法老要你們行神蹟給他看，你就吩咐亞倫把手杖丟在法老面前，使杖變作蛇。」
10 摩西和亞倫照耶和華的吩咐來到法老面前。亞倫把手杖丟在法老和他的臣僕面前，杖就變作蛇。 11 法老召他的謀士和巫師前來，這些人是埃及的術士，他們也用邪術如法炮製。 12 各人將自己的手杖扔在地上，杖就變作蛇，但亞倫的杖吞噬了他們的杖。 13 法老卻仍然硬著心，不肯聽從摩西和亞倫，正如耶和華所言。
水變血之災
14 耶和華對摩西說：「法老非常頑固，不肯釋放百姓。 15 明天早晨，法老會去尼羅河邊，你就在那裡等他，要拿著曾變成蛇的手杖。 16 你要對他說，『希伯來人的上帝耶和華差遣我來告訴你，要讓祂的子民到曠野去事奉祂，但到如今你還是不肯。 17 所以祂說要用手杖擊打尼羅河水，使河水變成血，好叫你知道祂是耶和華。 18 河裡的魚會死，河水會發臭，埃及人不能再喝尼羅河的水。』」
19 耶和華對摩西說：「你告訴亞倫，讓他向埃及境內的各江河、溪流、池塘伸杖，使水變成血。埃及境內，包括木桶和石缸裡將到處是血。」 20 摩西和亞倫就按著耶和華所吩咐的去做，亞倫在法老和埃及眾臣僕面前舉杖擊打尼羅河水，河水都變成了血。 21 河裡的魚都死了，河水臭得不能飲用。埃及遍地都是血。 22 可是，法老的巫師也一樣用邪術使水變成血。法老的心仍然剛硬，不肯聽從摩西和亞倫的話，正如耶和華所言。 23 法老若無其事地轉身回宮去了。 24 因為河水不能飲用，埃及人就在尼羅河兩岸掘井取水飲用。
25 擊打河水後，七天過去了。
蛙災
8 耶和華對摩西說：「你進宮去告訴法老，『耶和華說，讓以色列百姓離開，好事奉我。 2 如果你不聽從，我就使青蛙來毀壞你的國土。 3 尼羅河將充滿青蛙，牠們要跳到你的宮裡、臥室和床鋪上，你的臣僕和百姓家裡，你的爐灶和揉麵盆裡。 4 青蛙還會跳到你和你的百姓及眾臣僕身上。』」
5 耶和華對摩西說：「你叫亞倫向埃及各地的江河、溪流和池塘伸杖，使青蛙遍佈埃及全境。」 6 亞倫伸杖，青蛙就遍佈了埃及全境。 7 巫師也行邪術如法炮製，叫青蛙上來。 8 法老召摩西和亞倫進宮，對他們說：「你們快求耶和華，使這些青蛙離開我們，我便讓百姓去獻祭給耶和華。」 9 摩西對法老說：「好吧，你要我在什麼時候為你以及你的臣僕和百姓禱告，叫這些青蛙離開你和你的宮殿，只留在河裡呢？」 10 法老說：「明天。」摩西說：「就照你說的，這樣你就知道沒有神明能比得上我們的上帝耶和華。 11 明天青蛙會離開你、你的宮殿、你的臣僕和百姓，只留在河裡。」 12 摩西和亞倫離開法老後，摩西就為法老所受的蛙災一事向耶和華呼求。 13 耶和華答應了摩西的祈求。凡在房屋內、院子裡和田野中的青蛙都死了。 14 百姓把青蛙的屍體堆積起來，埃及全境都充滿了死青蛙的腐臭氣味。 15 法老看見災難已經過去，便又硬著心，不肯聽從摩西和亞倫的話，正如耶和華所言。
虱災
16 耶和華對摩西說：「你吩咐亞倫用杖擊打地上的塵土，使埃及境內的塵土變成蝨子。」 17 他們就照上帝的吩咐去做，亞倫伸杖擊打地上的塵土，蝨子就跑到人和牲畜身上，全埃及的塵土都變成了蝨子。 18 巫師們也試圖用邪術變出蝨子來，卻無法成功。埃及的百姓和牲畜身上長滿了蝨子。 19 巫師們對法老說：「這是上帝的作為。」法老的心卻仍然剛硬，不肯答應摩西和亞倫的要求，正如耶和華所言。
蒼蠅之災
20 耶和華對摩西說：「明天清早，你趁法老去河邊時去見他，告訴他，『耶和華說，放我的子民走，他們好事奉我， 21 不然，我就叫無數的蒼蠅飛到你、你的臣僕和百姓身上，進到你們各自的家中，使埃及遍地佈滿蒼蠅。 22 但那天，我子民居住的歌珊卻絲毫不會受攪擾，這樣你就知道我耶和華主宰天下。 23 我要把我的子民跟你的百姓分開，明天我必行這神蹟。』」 24 耶和華果然這樣行。密密麻麻的蒼蠅飛進法老的王宮和他臣僕的家裡，埃及全國都受到蒼蠅的毀壞。 25 法老召見摩西和亞倫，對他們說：「你們可以去獻祭給你們的上帝，不過要在我的境內舉行。」 26 摩西說：「這怎麼行？我們用來獻祭的東西，是埃及人最憎惡的。如果我們在埃及境內舉行這樣的儀式，他們一定會拿石頭打死我們。 27 我們要照我們上帝耶和華的吩咐離開這裡，走三天的路程到曠野去獻祭給祂。」 28 法老說：「好，我讓你們去曠野獻祭給你們的上帝耶和華，只是不要走得太遠。現在為我祈求吧。」 29 摩西說：「我離開這裡就去祈求耶和華，使蒼蠅明天就離開你及你的臣僕和百姓，但這次你不可再食言，阻止以色列人去向耶和華獻祭。」 30 摩西說完以後，便離開王宮，去祈求耶和華。 31 耶和華就照摩西的祈求，使成群的蒼蠅離開法老及其臣僕和百姓，一隻也沒有留下。 32 這一次，法老又硬著心，不肯讓百姓離開埃及。
瘟疫之災

8 耶和華對摩西和亞倫說：「你們去取幾把窯裡的灰，摩西要在法老面前把灰拋向空中。 9 這灰要變成塵土，散佈在埃及每一個角落，落在人或牲畜身上，就會起皰長瘡。」 10 摩西和亞倫便取了一些窯裡的灰，站在法老面前，摩西把灰拋向空中，埃及人和牲畜身上就開始起皰長瘡。 11 埃及的巫師無法與摩西對抗，因為他們及所有埃及人身上都長了膿瘡。 12 耶和華使法老的心剛硬，他就不聽他們的話，正如耶和華對摩西說的。
冰雹之災
13 耶和華對摩西說：「明天一早你再去見法老，對他說，『希伯來人的上帝耶和華這樣說，你要讓我的子民出去事奉我。 14 這一次，我要降下大災禍在你及你的臣僕和百姓身上，好叫你知道普天之下我獨一無二。 15 我若用瘟疫攻擊你和你的百姓，你們早就滅亡了。 16 我讓你活到現在，是為了向你彰顯我的權能，使我的名傳遍天下。 17 但你竟然在我的子民面前狂傲自大，不讓他們離開。 18 明天這個時候，我要使天上降下大冰雹，是你們埃及立國以來從沒有見過的。 19 現在，你要叫人趕快到田間把牲畜和屬於你的一切都帶到安全的地方。凡留在田間的人或牲畜都會被冰雹打死。』」 20 有些法老的臣僕聽了耶和華的話就很害怕，趕忙把在田間的僕人和牲畜都召回屋裡。 21 但那些不把耶和華的話放在心上的，仍把他們的奴僕和牲畜留在田間。 22 耶和華對摩西說：「你向天伸杖，天就會降下冰雹，落在埃及的一切人畜身上，摧毀田間的一切農作物。」 23 摩西向天伸出手杖，耶和華就發出雷電和冰雹，火光飛向大地。耶和華在埃及降下冰雹。 24 那時冰雹夾雜著火降下來，極為嚴重，在埃及史無前例。 25 冰雹摧毀了埃及境內田間的一切，包括人和牲畜，摧毀了田裡的一切作物，打斷了所有的樹木， 26 只有以色列人所住的歌珊沒有冰雹。 27 法老派人召來摩西和亞倫，對他們說：「這次我犯罪了，耶和華是對的，我和我的百姓錯了。 28 請你們向耶和華禱告，好止住雷電和冰雹。我准許以色列人出去，你們不必再留在這裡了。」 29 摩西回答說：「我一出城，就向耶和華舉手禱告，雷電和冰雹必立刻停止，這樣你就知道普天下都屬於耶和華。 30 但我知道你和你的臣僕還是不敬畏上帝耶和華。」
31 這場冰雹發生在大麥吐穗和亞麻開花的時候。 32 小麥和粗麥較晚成熟，沒有被冰雹打壞。 33 摩西離開法老，走出城外向耶和華舉手禱告，雷和冰雹便停止了，豪雨也不下了。 34 法老看見災禍停止，就又犯罪，他和他的臣僕都心裡頑固。 35 法老硬著心，不讓以色列人離開，正如耶和華藉摩西所言。
蝗蟲之災
10 耶和華對摩西說：「你去見法老，我已使他和他臣僕的心剛硬，好在他們當中行我這些神蹟。 2 這樣，你就可以把我如何嚴懲埃及人以及我在他們當中所行的神蹟告訴你的子孫，好叫你們知道我是耶和華。」
3 摩西和亞倫便進宮去見法老，對他說：「希伯來人的上帝耶和華說，『你要到什麼時候才肯在我面前謙卑下來，讓我的子民離開這裡去事奉我？ 4 這次你若再不答應，明天我要使蝗蟲飛入你的國境。 5 牠們鋪天蓋地，要吃光冰雹過後田間所剩的，包括一切樹木。 6 你的王宮及臣僕和所有埃及人的房屋都要佈滿蝗蟲，這是你祖祖輩輩從未見過的蝗災。』」摩西說完，便轉身離開法老。
7 臣僕對法老說：「這個人還要給我們添多少麻煩呢？讓他們離開去事奉他們的上帝耶和華吧！埃及已經快崩潰了，你不知道嗎？」 8 法老便召摩西和亞倫進宮，對他們說：「你們去事奉你們的上帝耶和華吧！但你們誰要去呢？」 9 摩西回答說：「我們男女老幼都要去，還有我們的牛群和羊群，因為我們要去守耶和華的節期，向祂獻祭。」 10 法老聽後，說：「我若讓你們帶走婦女和孩子，最好耶和華能保護你們！你們真是居心叵測。 11 不行！只有男子可以去事奉耶和華，這是你們一直要求的。」法老說完，便下令把他們趕出去。
12 耶和華對摩西說：「你向埃及伸杖，使蝗蟲飛來吃盡冰雹過後剩下的植物。」 13 摩西就向埃及伸杖。耶和華使東風在埃及境內颳了整整一天一夜，到早晨，東風帶來了蝗蟲。 14 埃及到處都佈滿了蝗蟲，數目之多實在是空前絕後。 15 整個埃及鋪滿蝗蟲，地上一片黑暗。這些蝗蟲吃盡了冰雹過後剩下的農作物和樹上的果子，沒有留下一點青綠。 16 法老急忙召見摩西和亞倫，對他們說：「我得罪了你們的上帝耶和華，又得罪了你們。 17 現在求你饒恕我的罪，就這一次，為我祈求你們的上帝耶和華撤去這場死亡之災吧！」 18 摩西就離開法老出去祈求耶和華， 19 耶和華就把風向倒轉，變成猛烈的西風，把蝗蟲颳走，吹進紅海。埃及境內一隻蝗蟲也沒留下。 20 可是，耶和華又使法老心硬，不讓以色列人離開埃及。
黑暗之災
21 耶和華對摩西說：「你向天伸杖，使埃及全境漆黑一片，那黑暗濃得甚至可以摸到。」 22 摩西向天伸杖，埃及全境便漆黑了三天之久。 23 埃及人彼此看不見，誰也不敢移動半步。可是，以色列人住的地方卻有光。 24 法老把摩西召來，對他說：「去吧，帶著你們的婦女和孩子去事奉耶和華吧，但你們要把牛羊留下。」 25 摩西回答說：「你要讓我們帶走牛羊，因為牠們是獻給我們上帝耶和華的祭物和燔祭牲。 26 我們要帶走所有的牲畜，一隻蹄子也不留下，因為我們要從其中選一些來獻給我們的上帝耶和華。我們抵達目的地前，還不知道把哪些獻給祂。」 27 但耶和華使法老的心剛硬，不肯讓以色列百姓離開。 28 法老對摩西說：「給我滾出去！不要再讓我見到你，因為你再見我面之日必死。」 29 摩西回答說：「你說得好，我必不再見你的面。」
滅長子之災
11 耶和華對摩西說：「我給法老和埃及再降下一場災難，之後他必放你們走，甚至是迫不及待地趕你們走。 2 你要告訴以色列人，不論男女，去向鄰近的埃及人索取金器銀器。」 3 耶和華使埃及人恩待以色列人，法老的臣僕和百姓極其尊重摩西。
4 摩西說：「耶和華說，『今晚半夜，我要走遍埃及。 5 埃及境內，從坐王位的法老的長子到推磨的女奴的長子，以及所有頭生的牲畜，都必死亡。 6 那時整個埃及必充滿悲慘的哭號聲，慘況空前絕後。 7 但在以色列人中，連狗也不會向人或牲畜吠叫，這樣你們就知道耶和華將把埃及人和以色列人分開。 8 到那天，你所有的臣僕都要來俯伏在我面前，求我和跟隨我的百姓離開這裡。那時我才會離開。』」摩西說完便怒氣沖沖地離開法老。 9 耶和華曾對摩西說：「法老一定不肯聽你的話，因此我要在埃及多行神蹟。」 10 摩西和亞倫在法老面前行了這一切的神蹟，但耶和華使法老的心剛硬，他不讓以色列人離開他的國土。
逾越節
12 耶和華在埃及對摩西和亞倫說： 2 「從現在開始，你們要以這個月為一月，為一年之首。 3 你要向以色列全體會眾宣佈，本月的第十日，每家都要預備一隻羊羔，一家一隻。 4 倘若家人太少，吃不了一隻，可以跟最近的鄰居共享一隻，你們要按人數和各人的食量預備羊羔。 5 羊羔必須是毫無殘疾、一歲的公綿羊或公山羊。 6 全體會眾要把羊留到本月十四日，在黃昏時分宰殺， 7 然後取點血塗在房子的門框和門楣上，全家要在房子裡吃羊肉。 8 當晚，你們要用火把羊肉烤熟，與無酵餅和苦菜一起吃。 9 不可吃生羊肉，也不可煮著吃，要把整隻羊，連頭帶腿和內臟一併烤著吃。 10 不可把肉留到早晨，留到早晨的肉要燒掉。 11 你們吃的時候，要束腰、穿鞋、手中拿杖，要趕快吃，這是耶和華的逾越節。
12 「因為那一夜我要巡遍埃及，把境內所有長子和頭生的牲畜全都殺掉，也要嚴懲埃及所有的神明。我是耶和華。 13 塗在你們房屋上的血是一個記號，我見到這血就會越過你們。我擊打埃及的時候，那災禍不會落到你們身上。 14 你們要記住這一天，守為耶和華的節期，作為世世代代永遠的定例。
除酵節
15 「七天之內你們都要吃無酵餅。第一天，要清除家中所有的酵。任何人若在這七天當中吃有酵的餅，要將他從以色列人中剷除。 16 在節期的第一天和第七天，你們都要招聚百姓舉行聖會。這兩天所有人都不得工作，除了預備各人要吃的以外，不可做任何工。 17 你們要守這無酵節，因為我在這天把你們大隊人馬從埃及領了出來。你們要守這節期，作為世世代代永遠的定例。 18 從一月十四日晚上開始，直到二十一日晚上，你們都要吃無酵餅。 19 在這七天內，你們屋裡不能有酵。任何人若吃了有酵的東西，不論他是寄居者還是本地人，要將他從以色列會眾中剷除。 20 無論你們住在哪裡都要吃無酵餅，不能吃有酵的食物。」
21 於是，摩西召集以色列的眾長老，對他們說：「你們家家戶戶都要挑選羊羔，把這逾越節的羊羔宰了。 22 拿一把牛膝草蘸盆裡的血，把血塗在門框和門楣上。天亮前，你們不可踏出門外。 23 因為耶和華要巡行各地，擊殺埃及人，祂看見你們的門框和門楣上有血，就必越過你們的家門，不讓滅命者進你們家殺人。 24 這是你們世世代代都要遵守的定例。 25 你們進入耶和華應許給你們的地方以後，要守這逾越節。 26 你們的兒女問你們守這節期的意義時， 27 你們就說，『這是獻給耶和華逾越節的祭，因為我們從前在埃及時，祂擊殺埃及人，卻越過以色列人所住的房子，救了我們各家。』」百姓聽了摩西這番話，都低頭下拜。 28 耶和華怎麼吩咐摩西和亞倫，以色列人就照樣遵行。
29 到了半夜，耶和華把所有埃及人的長子都殺了，包括坐王位的法老的長子、牢中囚犯的長子和一切頭生的牲畜。 30 晚上，法老及其臣僕和所有埃及人都驚醒了，到處都是哭號聲，因為沒有一家不死人的。 31 法老連夜召見摩西和亞倫，對他們說：「你們和以色列人走吧，離開我的人民。就照你們的要求，去事奉耶和華吧！ 32 照你們的要求，把所有的牛羊都帶走吧！也要為我祝福。」 33 埃及人催促以色列人趕快離開埃及，因為他們說：「我們都要死了。」 34 於是，以色列百姓就把沒有酵的麵團放在揉麵盆裡，用衣服包起來扛在肩上， 35 又遵照摩西的吩咐向埃及人索取金器、銀器和衣服。 36 耶和華使埃及人恩待以色列人，他們要什麼，埃及人就給什麼。這樣，以色列人奪取了埃及人的財富。
37 以色列百姓從埃及的蘭塞啟行，前往疏割，婦女孩童不算在內，單是步行的男子就有六十萬， 38 同行的還有許多外族人和大群的牛羊。 39 他們用從埃及帶出來的麵團烤成無酵餅，麵團沒有酵，因為他們被催促離開埃及，沒有時間準備食物。 40 以色列人在埃及共住了四百三十年， 41 正好滿了四百三十年的那一天，耶和華帶領以色列大隊人馬離開了埃及。 42 那天晚上是耶和華把祂的子民帶出埃及之夜，因此以後世世代代的以色列人都要在那日守夜，以尊崇耶和華。
43 耶和華對摩西和亞倫說：「以下是逾越節的條例。
「所有外族人都不可吃逾越節的羊羔， 44 但那些買來的奴隸若接受了割禮，就可以吃。 45 寄居的外族人和雇用的工人不可吃。 46 你們吃的時候，應當在房子裡吃，不得把肉帶到外面去，也不可折斷羊羔的一根骨頭。 47 以色列全體會眾都要守這節期。 48 跟你們住在一起的外族人如果想為耶和華守逾越節，他全家的男子都必須接受割禮，這樣才可以像以色列人一樣守逾越節，但沒有接受割禮的人絕不可吃逾越節的羊羔。 49 本地人和在你們中間寄居的外族人都要遵守這規矩。」
50 耶和華怎樣吩咐摩西和亞倫，以色列百姓都遵命而行。 51 就在那一天，耶和華帶領以色列大隊人馬離開了埃及。
奉獻頭胎
13 耶和華對摩西說： 2 「以色列人中的長子和頭生的牲畜都屬於我，因此要把他們分別出來，使他們聖潔，歸給我。」
3 摩西對百姓說：「你們要記住離開埃及的這一天，因為耶和華用大能的手把你們從受奴役的地方解救出來。不可吃帶酵的食物。 4 你們是在亞筆月[a]的這一天從埃及出來的， 5 將來耶和華帶領你們進入迦南以後，你們每逢此月都要為祂守節期。那裡現在住著迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、希未人和耶布斯人。耶和華已經向你們祖先起誓，應許賜給你們那奶蜜之鄉。 6 在節期的七天之內，你們只可以吃無酵餅，到了第七天，你們要為耶和華守節期。 7 七天之內要吃無酵餅，你們境內不得有酵或是帶酵的東西。 8 那時，要告訴你們的子孫，『這節期是紀念我們離開埃及時耶和華為我們所做的一切。』 9 這節期就好像在你們手上或額上作的記號，叫你們記得耶和華的律法，祂曾經用大能的手把你們帶出埃及。 10 因此，每一年你們都要按時守這節期。

雲柱和火柱

Moses and the Burning Bush
3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro(A) his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,(B) and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,(C) the mountain(D) of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord(E) appeared to him in flames of fire(F) from within a bush.(G) Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”
4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called(H) to him from within the bush,(I) “Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”(J)
5 “Do not come any closer,”(K) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”(L) 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father,[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”(M) At this, Moses hid(N) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.(O)
7 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen(P) the misery(Q) of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned(R) about their suffering.(S) 8 So I have come down(T) to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land,(U) a land flowing with milk and honey(V)—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites(W) and Jebusites.(X) 9 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing(Y) them. 10 So now, go. I am sending(Z) you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”(AA)
11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I(AB) that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
12 And God said, “I will be with you.(AC) And this will be the sign(AD) to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you[b] will worship God on this mountain.(AE)”
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’(AF) Then what shall I tell them?”
14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.[c] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am(AG) has sent me to you.’”
15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord,[d] the God of your fathers(AH)—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob(AI)—has sent me to you.’
16 “Go, assemble the elders(AL) of Israel and say to them, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob(AM)—appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen(AN) what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt(AO) into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’(AP)
18 “The elders of Israel will listen(AQ) to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews,(AR) has met(AS) with us. Let us take a three-day journey(AT) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(AU) to the Lord our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand(AV) compels him. 20 So I will stretch out my hand(AW) and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders(AX) that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.(AY)
21 “And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed(AZ) toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed.(BA) 22 Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver(BB) and gold(BC) and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder(BD) the Egyptians.”(BE)
Signs for Moses
4 Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen(BF) to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”
2 Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
“A staff,”(BG) he replied.
3 The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.”
Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake,(BH) and he ran from it. 4 Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5 “This,” said the Lord, “is so that they may believe(BI) that the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”
6 Then the Lord said, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous[e]—it had become as white as snow.(BJ)
7 “Now put it back into your cloak,” he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored,(BK) like the rest of his flesh.
8 Then the Lord said, “If they do not believe(BL) you or pay attention to the first sign,(BM) they may believe the second. 9 But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood(BN) on the ground.”
10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”(BO)
11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute?(BP) Who gives them sight or makes them blind?(BQ) Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go;(BR) I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”(BS)
13 But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”(BT)
14 Then the Lord’s anger burned(BU) against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet(BV) you, and he will be glad to see you. 15 You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth;(BW) I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16 He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth(BX) and as if you were God to him.(BY) 17 But take this staff(BZ) in your hand(CA) so you can perform the signs(CB) with it.”
Moses Returns to Egypt
18 Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Let me return to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.”
Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.”
19 Now the Lord had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill(CC) you are dead.(CD)” 20 So Moses took his wife and sons,(CE) put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff(CF) of God in his hand.
21 The Lord said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders(CG) I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart(CH) so that he will not let the people go.(CI) 22 Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son,(CJ) 23 and I told you, “Let my son go,(CK) so he may worship(CL) me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’”(CM)
24 At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses[f] and was about to kill(CN) him. 25 But Zipporah(CO) took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin(CP) and touched Moses’ feet with it.[g] “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said. 26 So the Lord let him alone. (At that time she said “bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.)
27 The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So he met Moses at the mountain(CQ) of God and kissed(CR) him. 28 Then Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and also about all the signs he had commanded him to perform.
29 Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders(CS) of the Israelites, 30 and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs(CT) before the people, 31 and they believed.(CU) And when they heard that the Lord was concerned(CV) about them and had seen their misery,(CW) they bowed down and worshiped.(CX)
Bricks Without Straw
5 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go,(CY) so that they may hold a festival(CZ) to me in the wilderness.’”
2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord,(DA) that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”(DB)
3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey(DC) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues(DD) or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor?(DE) Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous,(DF) and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers(DG) and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks;(DH) let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota.(DI) They are lazy;(DJ) that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’(DK) 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10 Then the slave drivers(DL) and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced(DM) at all.’” 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed,(DN) demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
15 Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
17 Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy!(DO) That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Now get to work.(DP) You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”
19 The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21 and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge(DQ) you! You have made us obnoxious(DR) to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword(DS) in their hand to kill us.”(DT)
God Promises Deliverance
22 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people?(DU) Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued(DV) your people at all.”
6 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand(DW) he will let them go;(DX) because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.”(DY)
2 God also said to Moses, “I am the Lord.(DZ) 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty,[h](EA) but by my name(EB) the Lord[i](EC) I did not make myself fully known to them. 4 I also established my covenant(ED) with them to give them the land(EE) of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners.(EF) 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning(EG) of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.(EH)
6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.(EI) I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem(EJ) you with an outstretched arm(EK) and with mighty acts of judgment.(EL) 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.(EM) Then you will know(EN) that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land(EO) I swore(EP) with uplifted hand(EQ) to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.(ER) I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”(ES)
9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor.(ET)
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, 11 “Go, tell(EU) Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country.”(EV)
12 But Moses said to the Lord, “If the Israelites will not listen(EW) to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips[j]?”(EX)
Family Record of Moses and Aaron
13 Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.(EY)
14 These were the heads of their families[k]:(EZ)
The sons of Reuben(FA) the firstborn son of Israel were Hanok and Pallu, Hezron and Karmi. These were the clans of Reuben.
15 The sons of Simeon(FB) were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These were the clans of Simeon.
16 These were the names of the sons of Levi(FC) according to their records: Gershon,(FD) Kohath and Merari.(FE) Levi lived 137 years.
17 The sons of Gershon, by clans, were Libni and Shimei.(FF)
18 The sons of Kohath(FG) were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.(FH) Kohath lived 133 years.
19 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi.(FI)
These were the clans of Levi according to their records.
20 Amram(FJ) married his father’s sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses.(FK) Amram lived 137 years.
21 The sons of Izhar(FL) were Korah, Nepheg and Zikri.
22 The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan(FM) and Sithri.
23 Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab(FN) and sister of Nahshon,(FO) and she bore him Nadab and Abihu,(FP) Eleazar(FQ) and Ithamar.(FR)
24 The sons of Korah(FS) were Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph. These were the Korahite clans.
25 Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas.(FT)
These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan.
26 It was this Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said, “Bring the Israelites out of Egypt(FU) by their divisions.”(FV) 27 They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh(FW) king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt—this same Moses and Aaron.(FX)
Aaron to Speak for Moses
28 Now when the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt, 29 he said to him, “I am the Lord.(FY) Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.”
30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Since I speak with faltering lips,(FZ) why would Pharaoh listen to me?”
7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God(GA) to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.(GB) 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(GC) and though I multiply my signs and wonders(GD) in Egypt, 4 he will not listen(GE) to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment(GF) I will bring out my divisions,(GG) my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(GH) when I stretch out my hand(GI) against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”
6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded(GJ) them. 7 Moses was eighty years old(GK) and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.
Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Snake
8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,(GL)’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”(GM)
10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers,(GN) and the Egyptian magicians(GO) also did the same things by their secret arts:(GP) 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart(GQ) became hard and he would not listen(GR) to them, just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Blood
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;(GS) he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river.(GT) Confront him on the bank of the Nile,(GU) and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship(GV) me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.(GW) 17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord:(GX) With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.(GY) 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink;(GZ) the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’”(HA)
19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff(HB) and stretch out your hand(HC) over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[l] of wood and stone.”
20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded.(HD) He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile,(HE) and all the water was changed into blood.(HF) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.
22 But the Egyptian magicians(HG) did the same things by their secret arts,(HH) and Pharaoh’s heart(HI) became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water(HJ), because they could not drink the water of the river.
The Plague of Frogs
25 Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile. 8 1 [m]Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(HK) me. 2 If you refuse to let them go, I will send a plague of frogs(HL) on your whole country. 3 The Nile will teem with frogs. They will come up into your palace and your bedroom and onto your bed, into the houses of your officials and on your people,(HM) and into your ovens and kneading troughs.(HN) 4 The frogs will come up on you and your people and all your officials.’”
5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff(HO) over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs(HP) come up on the land of Egypt.’”
6 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs(HQ) came up and covered the land. 7 But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts;(HR) they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.
8 Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Pray(HS) to the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go to offer sacrifices(HT) to the Lord.”
9 Moses said to Pharaoh, “I leave to you the honor of setting the time(HU) for me to pray for you and your officials and your people that you and your houses may be rid of the frogs, except for those that remain in the Nile.”
10 “Tomorrow,” Pharaoh said.
Moses replied, “It will be as you say, so that you may know there is no one like the Lord our God.(HV) 11 The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people; they will remain only in the Nile.”
12 After Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh, Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs he had brought on Pharaoh. 13 And the Lord did what Moses asked.(HW) The frogs died in the houses, in the courtyards and in the fields. 14 They were piled into heaps, and the land reeked of them. 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief,(HX) he hardened his heart(HY) and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Gnats
16 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff(HZ) and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.” 17 They did this, and when Aaron stretched out his hand with the staff and struck the dust of the ground, gnats(IA) came on people and animals. All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. 18 But when the magicians(IB) tried to produce gnats by their secret arts,(IC) they could not.
Since the gnats were on people and animals everywhere, 19 the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger(ID) of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart(IE) was hard and he would not listen,(IF) just as the Lord had said.
The Plague of Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning(IG) and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(IH) me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.
22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen,(II) where my people live;(IJ) no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know(IK) that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23 I will make a distinction[n] between my people and your people.(IL) This sign will occur tomorrow.’”
24 And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.(IM)
25 Then Pharaoh summoned(IN) Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”
26 But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians.(IO) And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must take a three-day journey(IP) into the wilderness to offer sacrifices(IQ) to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”
28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray(IR) for me.”
29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully(IS) again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”
30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord,(IT) 31 and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32 But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart(IU) and would not let the people go.
The Plague on Livestock
9 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: “Let my people go, so that they may worship(IV) me.” 2 If you refuse to let them go and continue to hold them back, 3 the hand(IW) of the Lord will bring a terrible plague(IX) on your livestock in the field—on your horses, donkeys and camels and on your cattle, sheep and goats. 4 But the Lord will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and that of Egypt,(IY) so that no animal belonging to the Israelites will die.’”
5 The Lord set a time and said, “Tomorrow the Lord will do this in the land.” 6 And the next day the Lord did it: All the livestock(IZ) of the Egyptians died,(JA) but not one animal belonging to the Israelites died. 7 Pharaoh investigated and found that not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died. Yet his heart(JB) was unyielding and he would not let the people go.(JC)
The Plague of Boils
8 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of soot from a furnace and have Moses toss it into the air in the presence of Pharaoh. 9 It will become fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, and festering boils(JD) will break out on people and animals throughout the land.”
10 So they took soot from a furnace and stood before Pharaoh. Moses tossed it into the air, and festering boils broke out on people and animals. 11 The magicians(JE) could not stand before Moses because of the boils that were on them and on all the Egyptians. 12 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart(JF) and he would not listen(JG) to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said to Moses.
The Plague of Hail
13 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, confront Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship(JH) me, 14 or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know(JI) that there is no one like(JJ) me in all the earth. 15 For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people(JK) with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. 16 But I have raised you up[o] for this very purpose,(JL) that I might show you my power(JM) and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. 17 You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. 18 Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm(JN) that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now.(JO) 19 Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every person and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.’”
20 Those officials of Pharaoh who feared(JP) the word of the Lord hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. 21 But those who ignored(JQ) the word of the Lord left their slaves and livestock in the field.
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that hail will fall all over Egypt—on people and animals and on everything growing in the fields of Egypt.” 23 When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the Lord sent thunder(JR) and hail,(JS) and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt; 24 hail fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.(JT) 25 Throughout Egypt hail struck everything in the fields—both people and animals; it beat down everything growing in the fields and stripped every tree.(JU) 26 The only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen,(JV) where the Israelites were.(JW)
27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,”(JX) he said to them. “The Lord is in the right,(JY) and I and my people are in the wrong. 28 Pray(JZ) to the Lord, for we have had enough thunder and hail. I will let you go;(KA) you don’t have to stay any longer.”
29 Moses replied, “When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands(KB) in prayer to the Lord. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth(KC) is the Lord’s. 30 But I know that you and your officials still do not fear(KD) the Lord God.”
31 (The flax and barley(KE) were destroyed, since the barley had headed and the flax was in bloom. 32 The wheat and spelt,(KF) however, were not destroyed, because they ripen later.)
33 Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. He spread out his hands toward the Lord; the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain no longer poured down on the land. 34 When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he sinned again: He and his officials hardened their hearts. 35 So Pharaoh’s heart(KG) was hard and he would not let the Israelites go, just as the Lord had said through Moses.
The Plague of Locusts
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart(KH) and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs(KI) of mine among them 2 that you may tell your children(KJ) and grandchildren how I dealt harshly(KK) with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”(KL)
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble(KM) yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4 If you refuse(KN) to let them go, I will bring locusts(KO) into your country tomorrow. 5 They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left(KP) after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields.(KQ) 6 They will fill your houses(KR) and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians—something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.’”(KS) Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare(KT) to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?”(KU)
8 Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship(KV) the Lord your God,” he said. “But tell me who will be going.”
9 Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival(KW) to the Lord.”
10 Pharaoh said, “The Lord be with you—if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.[p] 11 No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.
12 And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand(KX) over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”
13 So Moses stretched out his staff(KY) over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts;(KZ) 14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts,(LA) nor will there ever be again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured(LB) all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly summoned(LC) Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned(LD) against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive(LE) my sin once more and pray(LF) to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”
18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord.(LG) 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[q] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(LH) and he would not let the Israelites go.
The Plague of Darkness
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness(LI) spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness(LJ) covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.(LK)
24 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go,(LL) worship the Lord. Even your women and children(LM) may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.”(LN)
25 But Moses said, “You must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings(LO) to present to the Lord our God. 26 Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.”
27 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(LP) and he was not willing to let them go. 28 Pharaoh said to Moses, “Get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.”
29 “Just as you say,” Moses replied. “I will never appear(LQ) before you again.”
The Plague on the Firstborn
11 Now the Lord had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go(LR) from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely.(LS) 2 Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.”(LT) 3 (The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed(LU) toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded(LV) in Egypt by Pharaoh’s officials and by the people.)
4 So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight(LW) I will go throughout Egypt.(LX) 5 Every firstborn(LY) son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill,(LZ) and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 There will be loud wailing(MA) throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction(MB) between Egypt and Israel. 8 All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, ‘Go,(MC) you and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will leave.”(MD) Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.
9 The Lord had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen(ME) to you—so that my wonders(MF) may be multiplied in Egypt.” 10 Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart,(MG) and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread(MH)
12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month,(MI) the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[r](MJ) for his family, one for each household.(MK) 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect,(ML) and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month,(MM) when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.(MN) 7 Then they are to take some of the blood(MO) and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night(MP) they are to eat the meat roasted(MQ) over the fire, along with bitter herbs,(MR) and bread made without yeast.(MS) 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs.(MT) 10 Do not leave any of it till morning;(MU) if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. 12 “On that same night I will pass through(MX) Egypt and strike down(MY) every firstborn(MZ) of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods(NA) of Egypt. I am the Lord.(NB) 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over(NC) you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.(ND)
