22 「各位父老兄弟，現在請聽我的申辯。」 ²眾人聽見他用希伯來語向他們呼籲，就更加安靜了。保羅說： ³「我是猶太人，出生在奇里乞亞省的塔爾蘇，在這城裡長大；在迦瑪列門下，按照我們先祖的律法受了嚴格的教育；我對神是熱心的人，就像今天你們大家一樣。 ⁴我曾經逼迫這道的信徒^[a]置於死地，無論男女都捆綁起來，關進監獄。 ⁵這是大祭司和全長老議會的人都可以為我做見證的。我還從他們那裡拿到了給同胞們^[b]的一些信函往大馬士革去，要把那裡被捆綁的信徒們^[c]，帶到耶路撒冷來受刑。

保羅的見證

⁶「當我趕路快到大馬士革的時候，大約中午，忽然有強烈的光從天上下來，在我周圍四面照射。 ⁷我就仆倒在地上，聽見有聲音對我說：『掃羅，掃羅！你為什麼逼迫我？』

⁸「我回答：『主啊！你到底是誰？』

「他說：『我就是你所逼迫的拿撒勒人耶穌。』 ⁹與我在一起的人雖然看到了那光，^[d]卻聽不懂那對我說話的聲音。

¹⁰「我說：『主啊！我該做什麼呢？』

「主對我說：『起來，進大馬士革城去，在那裡你將被告知所指定你做的一切事。』

¹¹「我因那光的榮耀，什麼都看不見了，就被同行的人牽著手，進了大馬士革。 ¹²有一個名叫阿納尼亞的人，按照律法，是一個虔誠的人，受到所有住在那裡的猶太人讚許。 ¹³他來到我那裡，站在旁邊對我說：『掃羅弟兄，你重見光明吧！』就在那一刻，我抬頭看見他了。 ¹⁴他又說：『我們祖先的神預先指定了你，使你明白他的旨意，看見那位義者，聽見他口中傳來的聲音， ¹⁵因為你將要做他的見證人，向所有的人見證你所看到的、你所聽到的。 ¹⁶現在你還等什麼呢？起來，當受洗^[e]！求告他^[f]的名，當洗去你的罪孽！』

¹⁷「後來，我回到耶路撒冷，在聖殿裡禱告的時候，魂遊象外， ¹⁸看見主對我說：『快！趕快離開耶路撒冷，因為他們不會接受你為我做的見證。』

¹⁹「我就說：『主啊，他們知道我曾經到各會堂，把信靠你的人關進監獄，還鞭打他們。 ²⁰並且當你的見證人司提反受害^[g]流血的時候，我自己也站在旁邊贊同^[h]，還為那些殺害他的人看守衣服。』

²¹「主對我說：『去吧！我要派你到遙遠的外邦人那裡去。』」

保羅的羅馬公民權

²²眾人聽保羅講到這句話，就高聲說：「這樣的人，把他從地上除掉，因為他不該活著！」

²³他們喊叫，拋著衣服，向空中揚起塵土。 ²⁴千夫長下令把保羅押進營樓，吩咐鞭打拷問他，要了解民眾是因什麼理由向他這樣一直喊叫。 ²⁵當士兵們用皮條捆上保羅的時候，他對站在旁邊的百夫長說：「你們鞭打一個沒有被定罪的羅馬公民，可以嗎？」

²⁶百夫長聽了，就來到千夫長面前，報告說：「你要做什麼呢？^[i]要知道，這個人是羅馬公民。」

²⁷千夫長就前來問保羅：「告訴我，你是羅馬公民嗎？」

保羅說：「是的。」

²⁸千夫長說：「我花了一大筆錢，才買到了羅馬公民權。」

保羅說：「我生下來就是。」

²⁹於是那些要拷問他的人，立刻退下了。千夫長既知道他是羅馬公民，又因為捆綁了他，就懼怕起來。

³⁰第二天，千夫長想確切知道保羅為什麼被猶太人控告，就^[j]解開他，下令召集祭司長們和全議會的人^[k]，然後把保羅帶來，叫他站在他們面前。

English Standard Version

22 ^(A)“Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you.”

²And when they heard that he was addressing them in ^(B)the Hebrew language,^[a] they became even more quiet. And he said:

³^(C)“I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated ^(D)at the feet of ^(E)Gamaliel^[b] ^(F)according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, ^(G)being zealous for God ^(H)as all of you are this day. ⁴^(I)I persecuted ^(J)this Way ^(K)to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, ⁵as ^(L)the high priest and ^(M)the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to ^(N)the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.

⁶^(O)“As I was on my way and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone around me. ⁷And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ ⁸And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am ^(P)Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’ ⁹^(Q)Now those who were with me saw the light but did not understand^[c] the voice of the one who was speaking to me. ¹⁰And I said, ^(R)‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.’ ¹¹And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.

¹²“And ^(S)one Ananias, a devout man ^(T)according to the law, ^(U)well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, ¹³^(V)came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And ^(W)at that very hour I received my sight and saw him. ¹⁴And he said, ^(X)‘The God of our fathers ^(Y)appointed you to know his will, ^(Z)to see ^(AA)the Righteous One and ^(AB)to hear a voice from his mouth; ¹⁵for ^(AC)you will be a witness for him to everyone of what ^(AD)you have seen and heard. ¹⁶And now why do you wait? ^(AE)Rise and be baptized and ^(AF)wash away your sins, ^(AG)calling on his name.’

¹⁷^(AH)“When I had returned to Jerusalem and ^(AI)was praying in the temple, I fell into ^(AJ)a trance ¹⁸and saw him saying to me, ^(AK)‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’ ¹⁹And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in one synagogue after another ^(AL)I imprisoned and ^(AM)beat those who believed in you. ²⁰And when the blood of Stephen ^(AN)your witness was being shed, ^(AO)I myself was standing by and ^(AP)approving and ^(AQ)watching over the garments of those who killed him.’ ²¹And he said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you ^(AR)far away to the Gentiles.’”

Paul and the Roman Tribune

²²Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said, ^(AS)“Away with such a fellow from the earth! For ^(AT)he should not be allowed to live.” ²³And as they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, ²⁴the tribune ordered him to be brought into ^(AU)the barracks, saying that he should be ^(AV)examined by flogging, to find out why they were shouting against him like this. ²⁵But when they had stretched him out for the whips,^[d] Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to flog ^(AW)a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?” ²⁶When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” ²⁷So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” ²⁸The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I am a citizen by birth.” ²⁹So those who were about ^(AX)to examine him withdrew from him immediately, and the tribune also ^(AY)was afraid, ^(AZ)for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that ^(BA)he had bound him.

Paul Before the Council

³⁰But on the next day, ^(BB)desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.

22 ¹“Brothers and fathers,^(A) listen now to my defense.”

²When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic,^(B) they became very quiet.

Then Paul said: ³“I am a Jew,^(C) born in Tarsus^(D) of Cilicia,^(E) but brought up in this city. I studied under^(F) Gamaliel^(G) and was thoroughly trained in the law of our ancestors.^(H) I was just as zealous^(I) for God as any of you are today. ⁴I persecuted^(J) the followers of this Way^(K) to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison,^(L) ⁵as the high priest and all the Council^(M) can themselves testify. I even obtained letters from them to their associates^(N) in Damascus,^(O) and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished.

⁶“About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me.^(P) ⁷I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?’

⁸“‘Who are you, Lord?’ I asked.

“ ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth,^(Q) whom you are persecuting,’ he replied. ⁹My companions saw the light,^(R) but they did not understand the voice^(S) of him who was speaking to me.

¹⁰“‘What shall I do, Lord?’ I asked.

“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’^(T) ¹¹My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me.^(U)

¹²“A man named Ananias came to see me.^(V) He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.^(W) ¹³He stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ And at that very moment I was able to see him.

¹⁴“Then he said: ‘The God of our ancestors^(X) has chosen you to know his will and to see^(Y) the Righteous One^(Z) and to hear words from his mouth. ¹⁵You will be his witness^(AA) to all people of what you have seen^(AB) and heard. ¹⁶And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized^(AC) and wash your sins away,^(AD) calling on his name.’^(AE)

¹⁷“When I returned to Jerusalem^(AF) and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance^(AG) ¹⁸and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’

¹⁹“‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison^(AH) and beat^(AI) those who believe in you. ²⁰And when the blood of your martyr^[a] Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’^(AJ)

²¹“Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’ ”^(AK)

Paul the Roman Citizen

²²The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, “Rid the earth of him!^(AL) He’s not fit to live!”^(AM)

²³As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks^(AN) and flinging dust into the air,^(AO) ²⁴the commander ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks.^(AP) He directed^(AQ) that he be flogged and interrogated in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. ²⁵As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, “Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been found guilty?”^(AR)

²⁶When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. “What are you going to do?” he asked. “This man is a Roman citizen.”

²⁷The commander went to Paul and asked, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?”

“Yes, I am,” he answered.

²⁸Then the commander said, “I had to pay a lot of money for my citizenship.”

“But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.

²⁹Those who were about to interrogate him^(AS) withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen,^(AT) in chains.^(AU)

Paul Before the Sanhedrin

³⁰The commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews.^(AV) So the next day he released him^(AW) and ordered the chief priests and all the members of the Sanhedrin^(AX) to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them.

¹²“Then ^(O)a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, ^(P)having a good testimony with all the ^(Q)Jews who dwelt there, ¹³came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. ¹⁴Then he said, ^(R)‘The God of our fathers ^(S)has chosen you that you should ^(T)know His will, and ^(U)see the Just One, ^(V)and hear the voice of His mouth. ¹⁵^(W)For you will be His witness to all men of ^(X)what you have seen and heard. ¹⁶And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, ^(Y)and wash away your sins, ^(Z)calling on the name of the Lord.’

Paul’s Roman Citizenship

²⁶When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, “Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman.”

²⁷Then the commander came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman?”

He said, “Yes.”

²⁸The commander answered, “With a large sum I obtained this citizenship.”

And Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.”

²⁹Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

The Sanhedrin Divided

³⁰The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
