विश्वासणाऱ्यांवर संकट
8 स्तेफनाचा जो खून झाला त्याला शौलाची संमति होती. त्या दिवसापासून यरुशलेम येथील ख्रिस्ताच्या मंडळीचा मोठा छळ सुरु झाला. प्रेषितांशिवाय इतर सर्व विश्वासणारे शिष्य यहूदा व शोमरोन प्रांताच्या कानाकोपऱ्यात पांगून गेले.
Trouble for the Believers
2-3 काही धार्मिक माणसांनी स्तेफनाला पुरले आणि त्याच्यासाठी त्यांनी फार शोक केला. शौलाने ख्रिेस्ताच्या मंडळीचा छळ करण्यास सुरुवात केली. तो घरोघर जाई. स्त्रिया व पुरुष यांना धरुन खेचून नेई व तुरुंगात टाकीत असे. 4 विश्वासणारे सगळीकडे पांगले होते. जेथे कोठे विश्वासणारे जात, तेथे ते लोकांना सुवार्ता सांगत.
शोमरोनात फिलिप्पाची सेवा
5 फिलिप्प [a] शोमरोनातील एका शहरात गेला. त्याने ख्रिस्ताचा संदेश दिला. तेथील लोकांनी फिलिप्पाचे बोलणे ऐकले व त्याने केलेले चमत्कार पाहिले. 6 फिलिप्प ज्या गोष्टी त्यांना सांगत असे त्या ते लक्षपूर्वक ऐकत असत. 7 त्यांच्यापैकी पुष्कळांना अशुद्ध आत्मे लागले होते. पण फिलिप्पाने ते सर्व घालविले होते. ते माणसांच्या शरीरातून बाहेर पडताना मोठ्याने ओरडत बाहेर पडत असत. तेथे बरेच लंगडे व अर्धांगवायू झालेले लोक होते. फिलिप्पाने या लोकांना बरे केले. 8 यामुळे शहरातील लोक फार आनंदित झाले.
9 शिमोन नावाचा मनुष्य त्या नगरात राहत होता. तो जादूचे प्रयोग करीत असे. त्याच्या प्रयोगांमुळे लोक आश्चर्यचकित होत असत. तो स्वतःला फार मोठा समजत असे. 10 अगदी लहानापासून थोरापर्यंत लोक लक्षपूर्वक त्याचे ऐकत. ते म्हणत असत. “देवाची महान शक्ति असे ज्याला म्हणतात तोच हा मनुष्य आहे!” 11 त्याने आपल्या जादूमुळे बराच काळपर्यंत लोकांना चकीत केले असल्याने लोक त्याच्याकडे लक्ष देत असत. 12 परंतु जेव्हा देवाच्या राज्याविषयीची सुवार्ता आणि येशू ख्रिस्ताचे नाव फिलिप्पाने त्या लोकांना सांगितले तेव्हा त्यांनी त्याच्यावर विश्वास ठेवला. तेव्हा लोकांना बाप्तिस्मा देण्यात आला. त्यांच्यात जसे पुरुष होते तशा स्त्रियाही होत्या. 13 स्वतः शिमोनाने विश्वास ठेवला आणि त्याचा बाप्तिस्मा झाल्यावर तो फिलिप्प बरोबर राहू लागला. आणि झालेले चमत्कार आणि अद्भुत चिन्हे पाहून शिमोन आश्चर्याने थक्क झाला.
14 यरुशलेममधील प्रेषितांनी हे ऐकले की शोमरोनातील लोकांनी देवाच्या वचनाचा स्वीकार केला, म्हणून पेत्र व योहान यांना प्रेषितांनी शोमरोनातील लोकांकडे पाठविले. 15 जेव्हा पेत्र व योहान आले. तेव्हा त्यांनी शोमरोनी विश्वासणाऱ्यांना पवित्र आत्मा मिळावा म्हणून प्रार्थना केली. 16 या लोकांचा प्रभु येशूच्या नावात बाप्तिस्मा झाला होता, परंतु पवित्र आत्मा अजून त्यांच्यावर आला नव्हता. 17 मग पेत्र व योहान यांनी त्यांच्या डोक्यावर हात ठेवला आणि त्यांना पवित्र आत्मा मिळाला.
18 शिमोनाने पाहिले की, प्रेषितांच्या हात ठेवण्याने लोकांना पवित्र आत्मा मिळाला, तेव्हा शिमोन प्रेषितांना पैसे देऊ लागला. 19 शिमोन म्हणाला, “मी ज्याच्यावर हात ठेवीन त्याला पवित्र आत्मा मिळेल, अशी शक्ति मला सुध्दा द्या.”
20 पेत्र शिमोनाला म्हणाला, “तुझा व तुइया पैशाचा नाश होवो! कारण, देवाचे दान पैशाच्या बळावर विकत घेण्याचा तू विचार केलास! 21 या कामात तू आमचा सहभागी होऊ शकणार नाहीस. कारण तुझे अंतःकरण देवासमोर योग्य नाही. 22 आपले ह्रदय बदल, तू ज्या या वाईट गोष्टी केल्या आहेत, त्या सोडून दे. प्रभूला (देवाला) प्रार्थना कर. कदाचित तुइया पश्चात्तप्त अंतःकरणामुळे तो तुला क्षमा करील. 23 कारण तुइया मनात कटू मत्सर भरलेला आहे. व तू पापाचा दास झालेला आहेस, हे मला दिसून आले आहे!”
24 शिमोनाने उत्तर दिले, “आपण दोघेही माइयासाठी देवाजवळ प्रार्थना करावी. यासाठी की, ज्या गोष्टीबद्दल तुम्ही बोललात त्यापैकी एकही गोष्ट माइयावर न येवो!”
25 नंतर दोन्ही प्रेषितांनी आपली साक्ष लोकांना दिली (जे त्यांनी येशूला करताना पाहिले होते ते सांगितले.) त्यांनी प्रभुचा संदेश त्यांना सांगितला. मग ते यरुशलेमला परत गेले. परत येताना वाटेत त्यांनी अनेक शोमरोनी गावांत सुवार्ता सांगितली.
इथिओपियाच्या मनुष्याला फिलिप्पा शिक्षण देतो
26 देवाचा दूत फिलाप्पाशी बोलला, तो म्हणाला “तयार हो आणि दक्षिणेकडे जा, यरुशलेमहून गाझाकडे जाणाऱ्या रस्त्याने जा-तो रस्ता वाळवंटातून जातो.”
27 मग फिलिप्प तयार झाला व गेला. रस्त्यात त्याला एक इथिओपियाचा मनुष्य भेटला, तो मनुष्य षंढ होता. तो इथिओपियाच्या कांदके राणीकडे उच्च पदावर अधिकारी म्हणून कामाला होता. तो राणीच्या खजिन्याचा मुख्य होता. तो यरुशलेमला उपासना करण्यासाठी गेला होता. 28 आता तो आपल्या घरी चालला होता. तो त्याच्या रथात बसला होता आणि यशया संदेष्टयाचे पुस्तक वाचत होता.
29 पवित्र आत्मा फिलिप्पाला म्हणाला, “त्या रथाजवळ जा!” 30 मग फिलिप्प त्या रथाजवळ धावत धावत गेला, तेव्हा तो मनुष्य वाचत असताना त्याने ऐकले, फिलिप्प त्याला म्हणाला, “तुम्ही जे वाचत आहात, त्याचा अर्थ तुम्हांला कळतो का?”

34 तो अधिकारी फिलिप्पाला म्हणाला, “क्रुपा करुन मला सांगा, भविष्यवादी हे कोणाविषयी बोलतो आहे? तो स्वतःविषयी बोलत आहे की दुसन्या कोणाविषयी बोलत आहे?” 35 मग फिलिप्पाने तोंड उघडले व पवित्र शास्त्रातील या भागापासून सुरुवात करुन येशूविषयीची सुवार्ता त्याला सांगितली.
36 ते दोघे प्रवास करीत असताना एका पाण्याच्या ठिकाणाजवळ (तळ्याजवळ) आले. अधिकारी म्हणाला, “पहा! येथे पाणी आहे! माझा बाप्तिस्मा करायला कोणती अडचण आहे?” 37 [b] 38 आणि षंढाने रथ थांबविण्याची आज्ञा केली. नंतर फिलिप्प व षंढ हे दोघे उतरुन पाण्यात गेले आणि फिलिप्पाने त्याचा बाप्तिस्मा केला. 39 जेव्हा ते पाण्याबाहेर आले, तेव्हा प्रभूच्या आत्म्याने फिलिप्पाला दूर नेले आणि त्या अधिकाऱ्याला फिलिप्प पुन्हा दिसला नाही. पण तो अधिकारी पुढे तसाच मोठ्या आनंदाने प्रवास करीत घरी गेला. 40 आपण अजोत नगरात आहोत असे फिलिप्पाला दिसून आले आणि पुढे जात असताना जी गावे लागली त्या सर्व गावात त्याने सुवार्ता सांगितली. नंतर तो कैसरीयाला गेला.

8 And Saul(A) approved of their killing him.
The Church Persecuted and Scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered(B) throughout Judea and Samaria.(C) 2 Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3 But Saul(D) began to destroy the church.(E) Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4 Those who had been scattered(F) preached the word wherever they went.(G) 5 Philip(H) went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6 When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7 For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many,(I) and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.(J) 8 So there was great joy in that city.
Simon the Sorcerer
9 Now for some time a man named Simon had practiced sorcery(K) in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great,(L) 10 and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, “This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.”(M) 11 They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12 But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God(N) and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized,(O) both men and women. 13 Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles(P) he saw.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria(Q) had accepted the word of God,(R) they sent Peter and John(S) to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit,(T) 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them;(U) they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.(V) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them,(W) and they received the Holy Spirit.(X)
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money!(Y) 21 You have no part or share(Z) in this ministry, because your heart is not right(AA) before God. 22 Repent(AB) of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me(AC) so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord(AD) and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.(AE)
Philip and the Ethiopian
26 Now an angel(AF) of the Lord said to Philip,(AG) “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian[a](AH) eunuch,(AI) an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship,(AJ) 28 and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29 The Spirit told(AK) Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.”
30 Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
“He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.”[b](AL)
34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip began(AM) with that very passage of Scripture(AN) and told him the good news(AO) about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”(AP) [37] [c] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away,(AQ) and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40 Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns(AR) until he reached Caesarea.(AS)

8 Saul approved of putting Stephen to death.
On that day widespread persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem. Most believers, except the apostles, were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.
2 Devout men buried Stephen as they mourned loudly for him.
3 Saul tried to destroy the church. He dragged men and women out of one home after another and threw them into prison.
Some Samaritans Become Believers
4 The believers who were scattered went from place to place, where they spread the word. 5 Philip went to the city of Samaria and told people about the Messiah. 6 The crowds paid close attention to what Philip said. They listened to him and saw the miracles that he performed. 7 Evil spirits screamed as they came out of the many people they had possessed. Many paralyzed and lame people were cured. 8 As a result, that city was extremely happy.
9 A man named Simon lived in that city. He amazed the people of Samaria with his practice of magic. He claimed that he was great. 10 Everyone from children to adults paid attention to him. They said, “This man is the power of God, and that power is called great.” 11 They paid attention to Simon because he had amazed them for a long time with his practice of magic. 12 However, when Philip spread the Good News about the kingdom of God and the one named Yeshua Christ, men and women believed him and were baptized. 13 Even Simon believed, and after he was baptized, he became devoted to Philip. Simon was amazed to see the miracles and impressive things that were happening.
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 Peter and John went to Samaria and prayed that the Samaritans would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (Before this the Holy Spirit had not come to any of the Samaritans. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Yeshua.) 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit.
18 Simon saw that the Spirit was given to the Samaritans when the apostles placed their hands on them. So he offered Peter and John money 19 and said, “Give me this power so that anyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter told Simon, “May your money be destroyed with you because you thought you could buy God’s gift. 21 You won’t have any share in this because God can see how twisted your thinking is. 22 So change your wicked thoughts, and ask the Lord if he will forgive you for thinking like this. 23 I can see that you are bitter with jealousy and wrapped up in your evil ways.”
24 Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me that none of the things you said will happen to me.”
25 After they had boldly spoken about the message of the Lord, they spread the Good News in many Samaritan villages on their way back to Jerusalem.
Philip Tells an Ethiopian about Jesus
26 An angel from the Lord said to Philip, “Get up, and take the desert road that goes south from Jerusalem to Gaza.” 27 So Philip went.
An Ethiopian man who had come to Jerusalem to worship was on his way home. The man was a eunuch, a high-ranking official in charge of all the treasures of Queen Candace of Ethiopia. 28 As the official rode along in his carriage, he was reading the prophet Isaiah out loud.
29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go to that carriage, and stay close to it.”
30 Philip ran to the carriage and could hear the official reading the prophet Isaiah out loud. Philip asked him, “Do you understand what you’re reading?”
31 The official answered, “How can I understand unless someone guides me?” So he invited Philip to sit with him in his carriage.
32 This was the part of the Scriptures that the official was reading:
“He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
He was like a sheep that is silent
when its wool is cut off.
He didn’t open his mouth.
33 When he humbled himself,
he was not judged fairly.
Who from his generation
will talk about his life on earth being cut short?”
34 The official said to Philip, “I would like to know who the prophet is talking about. Is he talking about himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip spoke. Starting with that passage, Philip told the official the Good News about Yeshua.
36 As they were going along the road, they came to some water. The official said to Philip, “Look, there’s some water. What can keep me from being baptized?”[a] 38 The official ordered the carriage to stop. He and Philip stepped into the water, and Philip baptized him. 39 When they had stepped out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away. The official joyfully continued on his way and didn’t see Philip again.
40 Philip found himself in the city of Azotus. He traveled through all the cities and spread the Good News until he came to the city of Caesarea.

13 Maging si Simon mismo ay naniwala at pagkatapos mabautismuhan, nanatili siyang kasama ni Felipe. Namangha siya nang makakita ng mga tanda at ng mga dakilang himalang ginawa.
14 Nang mabalitaan ng mga apostol na nasa Jerusalem na tinanggap ng Samaria ang salita ng Diyos, sinugo nila sa kanila sina Pedro at Juan.
15 Ang dalawa ay bumaba at ipinanalangin sila upang kanilang tanggapin ang Espiritu Santo,
16 sapagkat hindi pa ito dumarating sa kaninuman sa kanila, kundi sila'y nabautismuhan lamang sa pangalan ng Panginoong Jesus.
17 Ipinatong nina Pedro at Juan[a] ang kanilang mga kamay sa kanila at tinanggap nila ang Espiritu Santo.
18 Nang makita ni Simon na ibinibigay ang Espiritu sa pamamagitan ng pagpapatong ng mga kamay ng mga apostol, sila'y inalok niya ng salapi,
19 na sinasabi, “Bigyan din ninyo ako ng kapangyarihang ito, upang sinumang patungan ko ng aking mga kamay ay tumanggap ng Espiritu Santo.”
20 Ngunit sinabi sa kanya ni Pedro, “Ang iyong salapi'y mapahamak na kasama mo, sapagkat inakala mong makukuha mo ang kaloob ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng salapi!
21 Wala kang bahagi ni karapatan man sa bagay na ito, sapagkat ang puso mo'y hindi matuwid sa harapan ng Diyos.
22 Kaya't pagsisihan mo ang kasamaan mong ito. Manalangin ka sa Panginoon at baka sakaling ipatawad sa iyo ang hangarin ng iyong puso.
23 Sapagkat nakikita kong ikaw ay nasa apdo ng kapaitan at nasa gapos ng kasamaan.”
24 Sumagot si Simon, “Ipanalangin ninyo ako sa Panginoon upang wala sa mga sinabi ninyo ang mangyari sa akin.”
25 Sina Pedro at Juan,[b] pagkatapos na makapagpatotoo at masabi na nila ang salita ng Panginoon, ay bumalik sa Jerusalem na ipinangaral ang ebanghelyo sa maraming nayon ng mga Samaritano.
Si Felipe at ang Pinunong Taga-Etiopia
26 Pagkatapos ay sinabi ng isang anghel ng Panginoon kay Felipe, “Tumindig ka at pumunta patungong timog, sa daang pababa mula sa Jerusalem patungong Gaza.” Ito'y isang ilang na daan.
27 At tumindig nga siya at umalis. May isang lalaking taga-Etiopia, isang eunuko at tagapamahala ni Candace na reyna ng mga taga-Etiopia. Siya ang namamahala ng buong kayamanan ng reyna. Ang eunuko[c] ay nagpunta sa Jerusalem upang sumamba.
28 Siya'y pabalik na at nakaupo sa kanyang karwahe, binabasa niya ang propeta Isaias.
29 Sinabi ng Espiritu kay Felipe, “Lumapit ka at makisakay sa karwaheng ito.”
30 Kaya't tumakbo si Felipe doon, at kanyang narinig na binabasa niya si Isaias na propeta, at sinabi niya, “Nauunawaan mo ba ang binabasa mo?”
31 Sumagot naman ito, “Paano nga ba, malibang may tumulong sa akin?” At kanyang inanyayahan si Felipe na umakyat at maupong kasama niya.
32 Ang(B) bahagi ng kasulatan na binabasa niya ay ito:
“Tulad ng tupa na dinala sa katayan;
at sa isang kordero na hindi umiimik sa harap ng kanyang manggugupit,
gayundin hindi niya ibinubuka ang kanyang bibig.
33 Sa kanyang pagpapakababa ay ipinagkait sa kanya ang katarungan.
Sino ang makapaglalarawan sa kanyang lahi?
Sapagkat inalis sa lupa ang kanyang buhay.”
34 Sinabi ng eunuko kay Felipe, “Ipinapakiusap ko, tungkol kanino sinasabi ito ng propeta, sa kanya bang sarili, o sa iba?”
35 Nagpasimulang magsalita si Felipe,[d] at simula sa kasulatang ito ay ipinangaral niya sa kanya ang magandang balita ni Jesus.
36 Sa kanilang pagpapatuloy sa daan, nakarating sila sa may tubig, at sinabi ng eunuko, “Tingnan mo, narito ang tubig! Ano ang nakakahadlang upang akoy mabautismuhan?”
[37 At sinabi ni Felipe: Kung nananampalataya ka ng buong puso ay mangyayari. Sumagot siya at sinabi: Sumasampalataya ako na si Jesu-Cristo ay Anak ng Diyos.]
38 Iniutos niyang itigil ang karwahe at lumusong si Felipe at ang eunuko sa tubig. At binautismuhan siya ni Felipe.[e]
39 Nang umahon sila sa tubig, inagaw ng Espiritu ng Panginoon si Felipe; at hindi na siya nakita ng eunuko at nagagalak na nagpatuloy siya sa kanyang lakad.
40 Ngunit natagpuan si Felipe sa Azotus. Sa pagdaraan ay ipinangaral niya ang ebanghelyo sa lahat ng mga bayan hanggang sa makarating siya sa Cesarea.

8 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.
2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.
3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.
4 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.
5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.
6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.
7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.
8 And there was great joy in that city.
9 But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one:
10 To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
11 And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.
12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.
21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.
23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.
24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.
25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.
26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
