Stephen’s Address: The Call of Abraham
7 Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2 And he said, (A)“Brethren and fathers, listen: The (B)God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in (C)Haran, 3 and said to him, (D)‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ 4 Then (E)he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was (F)dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell. 5 And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, (G)He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him. 6 But God spoke in this way: (H)that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into (I)bondage and oppress them four hundred years. 7 (J)‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will (K)judge,’ said God, (L)‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’ 8 (M)Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; (N)and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; (O)and Isaac begot Jacob, and (P)Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.
The Patriarchs in Egypt
9 (Q)“And the patriarchs, becoming envious, (R)sold Joseph into Egypt. (S)But God was with him 10 and delivered him out of all his troubles, (T)and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. 11 (U)Now a famine and great [a]trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance. 12 (V)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. 13 And the (W)second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh. 14 (X)Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and (Y)all his relatives to him, [b]seventy-five people. 15 (Z)So Jacob went down to Egypt; (AA)and he died, he and our fathers. 16 And (AB)they were carried back to Shechem and laid in (AC)the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.
God Delivers Israel by Moses
17 “But when (AD)the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, (AE)the people grew and multiplied in Egypt 18 till another king (AF)arose who did not know Joseph. 19 This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, (AG)making them expose their babies, so that they might not live. 20 (AH)At this time Moses was born, and (AI)was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months. 21 But (AJ)when he was set out, (AK)Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. 22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was (AL)mighty in words and deeds.
23 (AM)“Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel. 24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck down the Egyptian. 25 For he supposed that his brethren would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand. 26 And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brethren; why do you wrong one another?’ 27 But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, (AN)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 (AO)Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he (AP)had two sons.
30 (AQ)“And when forty years had passed, an Angel [c]of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai. 31 When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him, 32 saying, (AR)‘I am the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and dared not look. 33 (AS)‘Then the Lord said to him, “Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. 34 I have surely (AT)seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will (AU)send you to Egypt.” ’
35 “This Moses whom they rejected, saying, (AV)‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer (AW)by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 (AX)He brought them out, after he had (AY)shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, (AZ)and in the Red Sea, (BA)and in the wilderness forty years.
Israel Rebels Against God
37 “This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, (BB)‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brethren. (BC)Him[d] you shall hear.’
38 (BD)“This is he who was in the [e]congregation in the wilderness with (BE)the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, (BF)the one who received the living (BG)oracles[f] to give to us, 39 whom our fathers (BH)would not obey, but rejected. And in their hearts they turned back to Egypt, 40 (BI)saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 41 (BJ)And they made a calf in those days, offered sacrifices to the idol, and (BK)rejoiced in the works of their own hands. 42 Then (BL)God turned and gave them up to worship (BM)the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the Prophets:
(BN)‘Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness,
O house of Israel?
43 You also took up the tabernacle of Moloch,
And the star of your god Remphan,
Images which you made to worship;
And (BO)I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
God’s True Tabernacle
44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses (BP)to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, 45 (BQ)which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, (BR)whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the (BS)days of David, 46 (BT)who found favor before God and (BU)asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. 47 (BV)But Solomon built Him a house.
48 “However, (BW)the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:
49 ‘Heaven(BX) is My throne,
And earth is My footstool.
What house will you build for Me? says the Lord,
Or what is the place of My rest?
50 Has My hand not (BY)made all these things?’

51 “You (BZ)stiff-necked[g] and (CA)uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. 52 (CB)Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of (CC)the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, 53 (CD)who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.”

54 (CE)When they heard these things they were [h]cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, (CF)being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the (CG)glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, “Look! (CH)I see the heavens opened and the (CI)Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And (CJ)the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, (CK)receive my spirit.” 60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, (CL)“Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

7 महायाजक ने उनसे प्रश्न किया, “क्या यह आरोप सच है?”
2 स्तेफ़ानॉस ने उसे उत्तर दिया, “आदरणीय गुरुवर और बन्धुओं,” कृपया सुनिए: महामहिम परमेश्वर ने हमारे पूर्वज अब्राहाम को उनके हारान प्रदेश में आकर बसने के पूर्व, जब वह मेसोपोतामिया में थे, दिव्य दर्शन देते हुए आज्ञा दी: 3 अपनी मातृभूमि और परिजनों का त्याग कर उस देश में चले जाओ, जो मैं तुम्हें दिखाऊँगा.
4 “इसलिए वह कसदियों के देश को छोड़कर हारान नगर में बस गए. इसके बाद उनके पिता की मृत्यु के बाद, परमेश्वर उन्हें इस भूमि पर ले आए जिस पर आप निवास कर रहे हैं. परमेश्वर ने उन्हें इस भूभाग का कोई उत्तराधिकार नहीं दिया; 5 यहाँ तक कि पैर रखने का भी स्थान नहीं. किन्तु परमेश्वर ने उनके उस समय निःसन्तान होने पर भी उनसे यह प्रतिज्ञा की कि उनके बाद वह उनके वंशजों को यह भूमि उनकी सम्पत्ति के रूप में प्रदान करेंगे. 6 आगे परमेश्वर ने यह भी कहा: ‘तुम्हारे वंशज विदेश में प्रवासी और दास बनाए जाएँगे तथा उन पर चार सौ वर्ष तक अत्याचार किया जाता रहेगा. 7 जिस किसी राष्ट्र के द्वारा वे उत्पीड़ित किए जाएँगे मैं उसे दण्ड दूँगा,’ ‘इसके बाद वे वहाँ से निकल आएंगे तथा इसी स्थान पर मेरी आराधना करेंगे.’ 8 परमेश्वर ने अब्राहाम के साथ ख़तना की वाचा स्थापित की. जब अब्राहाम के पुत्र इसहाक का जन्म हुआ, तो आठवें दिन उनका ख़तना किया गया. इसहाक के पुत्र थे याक़ोब और याक़ोब से बारह कुलपिता उत्पन्न हुए.
9 “जलन के कारण कुलपिताओं ने योसेफ़ को मिस्र देश में बेच दिया किन्तु परमेश्वर की कृपादृष्टि योसेफ़ पर बनी रही. 10 इसलिए परमेश्वर ने योसेफ़ को सभी यातनाओं से मुक्त कर उन्हें बुद्धि प्रदान की और मिस्र देश के राजा फ़रोह की कृपादृष्टि प्रदान की तथा फ़रोह ने उन्हें मिस्र देश और पूरे राजभवन पर अधिकारी बना दिया.
11 “तब सारे मिस्र और कनान देश में अकाल पड़ा जिससे हर जगह हाहाकार मच गया और हमारे पूर्वजों के सामने भोजन का अभाव हो गया. 12 किन्तु जब याक़ोब को यह मालूम हुआ कि मिस्र देश में अन्न उपलब्ध है, उन्होंने हमारे पूर्वजों को अन्न लेने वहाँ भेजा, जिनकी यह पहली मिस्र-यात्रा थी. 13 जब वे अन्न लेने वहाँ दूसरी बार गए, योसेफ़ ने स्वयं को अपने भाइयों पर प्रकट कर दिया, जिससे फ़रोह योसेफ़ के परिवार से परिचित हो गया. 14 तब योसेफ़ ने अपने पिता और सारे परिवार को, जिनकी संख्या पचहत्तर थी, मिस्र देश में बुला लिया. 15 तब याक़ोब मिस्र देश में बस गए और वहीं उनकी और हमारे पूर्वजों की मृत्यु हुई. 16 उनके अवशेष शकेम नगर लाए गए तथा उन्हें अब्राहाम द्वारा मोल ली गई कन्दरा-क़ब्र में रखा गया, जिसे अब्राहाम ने शकेम नगर के निवासी हामोर के पुत्रों को दाम देकर खरीदा था.
17 “जब परमेश्वर द्वारा अब्राहाम से की गई प्रतिज्ञा को पूरी करने का समय आया तब मिस्र देश में हमारे पूर्वजों की संख्या में कई गुणा वृद्धि हो चुकी थी. 18 उस समय मिस्र देश में एक अन्य फ़रोह का शासन था, जो योसेफ़ के विषय में कुछ भी नहीं जानता था. 19 उसने हमारे पूर्वजों के साथ चालाकी से बुरा व्यवहार किया और नवजात शिशुओं को नाश करने के लिए विवश किया कि एक भी शिशु बचा न रहे.
20 “इसी काल में मोशेह का जन्म हुआ. वह परमेश्वर की दृष्टि में चाहनेयोग्य थे. तीन माह तक उनका पालन-पोषण उनके पिता के ही परिवार में हुआ. 21 जब उनको छुपाए रखना असम्भव हो गया तब फ़रोह की पुत्री उन्हें ले गई. उसने उनका पालन-पोषण अपने पुत्र जैसे किया. 22 मिस्र देश की सारी विद्या में मोशेह को प्रशिक्षित किया गया. वह बातचीत और कर्तव्य पालन करने में प्रभावशाली थे.
23 “जब मोशेह लगभग चालीस वर्ष के हुए, उनके मन में अपने इस्राएली बन्धुओं से भेंट करने का विचार आया. 24 वहाँ उन्होंने एक इस्राएली के साथ अन्याय से भरा व्यवहार होते देख उसकी रक्षा की तथा सताए जाने वाले के बदले में मिस्रवासी की हत्या कर दी. 25 उनका विचार यह था कि उनके इस काम के द्वारा इस्राएली यह समझ जाएँगे कि परमेश्वर स्वयं उन्हीं के द्वारा इस्राएलियों को मुक्त करा रहे हैं किन्तु ऐसा हुआ नहीं. 26 दूसरे दिन जब उन्होंने आपस में लड़ते हुए दो इस्राएलियों के मध्य यह कहते हुए मेल-मिलाप का प्रयास किया, ‘तुम भाई-भाई हो, क्यों एक दूसरे को आहत करना चाह रहे हो?’
27 “उस अन्याय करने वाले इस्राएली ने मोशेह को धक्का देते हुए कहा, ‘किसने तुम्हें हम पर राजा और न्यायी ठहराया है? 28 कहीं तुम्हारा मतलब कल उस मिस्री जैसे मेरी भी हत्या का तो नहीं है? बोलो!’ 29 यह सुन मोशेह वहाँ से भाग खड़े हुए और मिद्यान देश में परदेशी होकर रहने लगे. वहाँ उनके दो पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए.
30 “चालीस वर्ष व्यतीत होने पर सीनय पर्वत के जंगल में एक जलती हुई कँटीली झाड़ी की ज्वाला में उन्हें एक स्वर्गदूत दिखाई दिया. 31 इस दृश्य ने उन्हें आश्चर्यचकित कर दिया. जब वह इसे नज़दीकी से देखने के उद्देश्य से झाड़ी के पास गए तो परमेश्वर ने उनसे कहा: 32 ‘मैं तुम्हारे पूर्वजों के पिता अर्थात् अब्राहाम, इसहाक तथा याक़ोब का परमेश्वर हूँ.’ मोशेह भय से कांपने लगे और ऊपर आँख उठाने का साहस न कर सके.
33 “प्रभु ने मोशेह से कहा, ‘अपने पैरों से जूतियाँ उतार दो क्योंकि जिस जगह पर तुम खड़े हो वह पवित्र जगह है. 34 मिस्र देश में मेरी प्रजा पर हो रहा अत्याचार मैंने अच्छी तरह से देखा है. मैंने उनका कराहना भी सुना है. मैं उन्हें मुक्त कराने नीचे उतर आया हूँ. सुनो, मैं तुम्हें मिस्र देश भेजूँगा.’
35 “यह वही मोशेह हैं, जिन्हें इस्राएलियों ने यह कहते हुए अस्वीकार कर दिया था, ‘किसने तुम्हें हम पर राजा और न्याय करनेवाला ठहराया है?’ परमेश्वर ने उन्हीं को उस स्वर्गदूत द्वारा, जो झाड़ी में उन्हें दिखाई दिया था, राजा तथा छुड़ानेवाला ठहराकर भेज दिया. 36 यह वही मोशेह थे, जिन्होंने उनका नायक होकर उन्हें बाहर निकाला और मिस्र देश, लाल सागर तथा चालीस वर्ष जंगल में अद्भुत चिह्न दिखाते हुए उनका मार्गदर्शन किया.
37 “यही थे वह मोशेह, जिन्होंने इस्राएल की सन्तान के सामने यह घोषणा पहले से ही की थी, ‘तुम्हारे ही बन्धुओं में से परमेश्वर मेरे ही समान एक भविष्यद्वक्ता को उठाएंगे.’ 38 यह वही हैं, जो जंगल में इस्राएली समुदाय में उस स्वर्गदूत के साथ मौजूद थे, जिसने उनसे सीनय पर्वत पर बातें कीं और जो हमारे पूर्वजों के साथ थे तथा मोशेह ने तुम्हें सौंप देने के लिए जिनसे जीवित वचन प्राप्त किए.
39 “हमारे पूर्वज उनके आज्ञापालन के इच्छुक नहीं थे. वे मन ही मन मिस्र देश की कामना करने लगे. 40 वे हारोन से कहते रहे, ‘हमारे आगे-आगे जाने के लिए देवताओं को स्थापित करो. इस मोशेह की, जो हमें मिस्र साम्राज्य से बाहर लेकर आया है, कौन जाने क्या हुआ!’ 41 तब उन्होंने बछड़े की एक मूर्ति बनाई, उसे बलि चढ़ाई तथा अपने हाथों के कामों पर उत्सव मनाने लगे. 42 इससे परमेश्वर ने उनसे मुँह मोड़कर उन्हें नक्षत्रों की उपासना करने के लिए छोड़ दिया, जैसा भविष्यद्वक्ताओं के अभिलेख में लिखा है:
“‘इस्राएलवंशियों क्या तुमने जंगल
में चालीस वर्ष मुझे ही बलि तथा, भेंटें नहीं चढ़ाईं?
43 तुमने देवता मोलेक की वेदी की स्थापना की,
अपने देवता रेफ़ान के तारे को ऊँचा किया
और उन्हीं की मूर्तियों को आराधना के लिए स्थापित किया.
इसलिए मैं तुम्हें बाबेल से दूर’ निकाल ले जाऊँगा.
44 “जंगल में गवाही का तम्बू हमारे पूर्वजों के पास था. इसका निर्माण ठीक-ठीक परमेश्वर द्वारा मोशेह को दिए गए निर्देश के अनुसार किया गया था, जिसका आकार स्वयं मोशेह देख चुके थे. 45 हमारे पूर्वज इस गवाही के तम्बू को योशुआ के नेतृत्व में अपने साथ उस भूमि पर ले आए, जिसे उन्होंने अपने अधिकार में ले लिया था और जहाँ से परमेश्वर ने हमारे पूर्वजों के सामने से राष्ट्रों को निकाल दिया था. ऐसा दाविद के समय तक रहा. 46 दाविद पर परमेश्वर की कृपादृष्टि थी. दाविद ने उनसे याक़ोब के परमेश्वर के लिए एक निवास स्थान बनाने की आज्ञा चाही. 47 किन्तु इस भवन का निर्माण शलोमोन द्वारा किया गया.
48 “सच तो यह है कि, परमप्रधान परमेश्वर मनुष्य के हाथ से बने भवन में वास नहीं करते. भविष्यद्वक्ता की घोषणा है: 49 परमेश्वर का कहना है,
“‘स्वर्ग मेरा सिंहासन
तथा पृथ्वी मेरे पैरों की चौकी है.
किस प्रकार का घर बनाओगे तुम मेरे लिए?
या कहाँ होगा मेरा विश्राम स्थान?
50 क्या ये सभी मेरे ही हाथों की रचना नहीं?’
51 “आप, जो हठीले हृदय और कान के ख़तना रहित लोग हैं, हमेशा पवित्रात्मा का विरोध करते रहते हैं. आप ठीक वही कर रहे हैं, जो आपके पूर्वजों ने किया. 52 क्या कभी भी कोई ऐसा भविष्यद्वक्ता हुआ है, जिसे आपके पूर्वजों ने सताया न हो? यहाँ तक कि उन्होंने तो उन भविष्यद्वक्ताओं की हत्या भी कर दी जिन्होंने उस धर्मी जन के आगमन की पहले से ही घोषणा की थी. यहाँ उसी की हत्या करके आप लोग विश्वासघाती और हत्यारे बन गए हैं. 53 आप वही हैं जिन्हें स्वर्गदूतों द्वारा प्रभावशाली व्यवस्था सौंपी गई थी, फिर भी आपने उसका पालन नहीं किया.”
स्तेफ़ानॉस का पथराव—शाऊल भी एक उत्पीड़क
54 यह सुन सारे सुननेवाले तिलमिला उठे और स्तेफ़ानॉस पर दाँत पीसने लगे.
55 किन्तु पवित्रात्मा से भरकर स्तेफ़ानॉस ने जब अपनी दृष्टि स्वर्ग की ओर उठाई, उन्होंने परमेश्वर की महिमा को और मसीह येशु को परमेश्वर के दाहिनी ओर खड़े हुए देखा. 56 स्तेफ़ानॉस ने सुननेवालों को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा, “वह देखिए! मुझे स्वर्ग खुला हुआ तथा मनुष्य का पुत्र परमेश्वर के दाहिनी ओर खड़े हुए दिखाई दे रहे हैं.”
57 यह सुनते ही सुननेवालों ने चीखते हुए अपने कानों पर हाथ रख लिए. फिर वे गुस्से में स्तेफ़ानॉस पर एक साथ टूट पड़े. 58 उन्होंने स्तेफ़ानॉस को पकड़ा और घसीटते हुए नगर के बाहर ले गए और वहाँ उन्होंने पथराव करके उनकी हत्या कर दी. इस समय उन्होंने अपने बाहरी कपड़े शाऊल नामक युवक के पास रख छोड़े थे.
59 जब वे स्तेफ़ानॉस का पथराव कर रहे थे, स्तेफ़ानॉस ने प्रभु से इस प्रकार प्रार्थना की, “प्रभु येशु, मेरी आत्मा को स्वीकार कीजिए.” 60 तब उन्होंने घुटने टेककर ऊँचे शब्द में यह कहा, “प्रभु, इन्हें इस पाप का दोषी न ठहराना.” यह कहते हुए स्तेफ़ानॉस लंबी नींद में सो गए.

Stephen’s Speech to the Sanhedrin
7 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”
2 To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers,(A) listen to me! The God of glory(B) appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.(C) 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[a](D)
4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(E) 5 He gave him no inheritance here,(F) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(G) even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(H) 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[b](I) 8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(J) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(K) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(L) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(M)
9 “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(N) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(O) But God was with him(P) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(Q)
11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(R) 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.(S) 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,(T) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.(U) 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,(V) seventy-five in all.(W) 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.(X) 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.(Y)
17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(Z) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[c](AA) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(AB)
20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[d] For three months he was cared for by his family.(AC) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(AD) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(AE) and was powerful in speech and action.
23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’
27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(AF) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(AG)
30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(AH) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(AI) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(AJ)
33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(AK) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g](AL)
35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(AM) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(AN) and performed wonders and signs(AO) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(AP) and for forty years in the wilderness.(AQ)
37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[h](AR) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(AS) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(AT) and he received living words(AU) to pass on to us.(AV)
39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(AW) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[i](AX) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(AY) 42 But God turned away from them(AZ) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(BA) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[j](BB) beyond Babylon.
44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(BC) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(BD) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(BE) It remained in the land until the time of David,(BF) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[k](BG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(BH)
48 “However, the Most High(BI) does not live in houses made by human hands.(BJ) As the prophet says:
49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.(BK)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[l](BL)
51 “You stiff-necked people!(BM) Your hearts(BN) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(BO) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(BP)— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(BQ) but have not obeyed it.”
The Stoning of Stephen
54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(BR) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(BS) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(BT) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(BU) and the Son of Man(BV) standing at the right hand of God.”
57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(BW) and began to stone him.(BX) Meanwhile, the witnesses(BY) laid their coats(BZ) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(CA)
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(CB) 60 Then he fell on his knees(CC) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(CD) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(CE)

7 And the prince of priests said to Stephen, Whether these things have them so?
2 Which said, Brethren and fathers [Which saith, Men, brethren, and fathers], hear ye. [The] God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before that he dwelt in Charran [before he dwelt in Charran],
3 and said to him, Go out of thy land, and of thy kindred, and come into the land, which I shall show to thee.
4 Then he went out of the land of Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran. And from thence after that his father was dead, he translated him into this land, in which ye dwell now.
5 And he gave not to him heritage in it, neither a pace of a foot, but he promised to give [to] him it into possession, and to his seed after him, when he had not a son.
6 And God spake to him, That his seed shall be [a] comeling in an alien land, and they shall make them subject to servage, and shall evil treat them, four hundred years and thirty;[a]
7 and I shall judge the folk, to whom they shall serve, saith the Lord. And after these things they shall go out, and they shall serve to me in this place.

16 and they were translated into Sychem, and were laid in the sepulchre, that Abraham bought by price of silver of the sons of Emmor, the son of Sychem.
17 And when the time of promise came nigh, which God had acknowledged to Abraham, the people waxed, and multiplied in Egypt,
18 till another king rose in Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
19 This beguiled our kin, and tormented our fathers, that they should put away their young children [that they should put out their young children], for they should not live.
20 In the same time Moses was born, and he was loved of God; and he was nourished three months in the house of his father [and he was accepted, or loved, of God; and he was nursed three months in the house of his father].
21 And when he was put out in the river [Forsooth when he was put out], the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and nourished him into her son.
22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and works.
23 But when the time of forty years was filled to him [was full-filled to him], it rose up into his heart, that he should visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
24 And when he saw a man suffering wrong, he venged him, and did vengeance for him that suffered the wrong [and did vengeance to him that suffered wrong], and killed the Egyptian.
25 For he guessed that his brethren should understand, that God should give to them health by the hand of him [that God by the hand of him should give to them health]; but they understood not.
26 For in the day following he appeared to them chiding, and he accorded them in peace, and said, Men, ye be brethren; why harm ye each other?[b]
27 But he that did the wrong to his neighbour, putted him away, and said, Who ordained thee prince and doomsman on us? [Forsooth he that did wrong to his neighbour, put him away, saying, Who ordained thee prince and doomsman upon us?]
28 Whether thou wilt slay me, as yesterday thou killedest the Egyptian?
29 And in this word Moses flew, and was made a comeling in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
30 And when he had filled forty years [And forty years fulfilled], an angel appeared to him in fire of flame of a bush, in desert of the mount of Sina.
31 And Moses saw, and wondered on the sight. And when he approached to behold [And when he nighed to behold], the voice of the Lord was made to him,
32 and said [saying], I am God of your fathers, God of Abraham, [and] God of Isaac, [and] God of Jacob. Moses was made trembling, and durst not behold.
33 But God said to him, Do off the shoes of thy feet, for the place in which thou standest is holy earth.
34 I seeing saw the tormenting of my people that is in Egypt [I seeing saw the affliction, or tormenting, of my people that is in Egypt], and I heard the mourning of them, and came down to deliver them. And now come thou, and I shall send thee into Egypt.
35 This Moses whom they denied, saying, Who ordained thee prince and doomsman on [upon] us? God sent this prince and again-buyer, with the hand of the angel, that appeared to him in the bush.
36 This Moses led them out [This led them out], and did wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the red sea, and in desert forty years.
37 This is Moses, that said to the sons of Israel, God shall raise to you a prophet of your brethren, [and] as me ye shall hear him.
38 This it is [This is], that was in the church in wilderness, with the angel that spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers; which took words of life to give to us.
39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but putted him away [but put him away], and were turned away in their hearts into Egypt,
40 saying to Aaron, Make thou to us gods, that shall go before us; for to this Moses that led us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is done to him [we witen not, what is done to him].
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the maumet; and they were glad in the works of their hands [and offered an host to the simulacrum; and they gladded in the works of their hands].
42 And God turned, and betook them to serve to the knighthood of heaven, as it is written in the book of [the] prophets, Whether ye, house of Israel, offered to me slain sacrifices, either sacrifices, forty years in desert?
43 And ye have taken the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures that ye have made to worship them; and I shall translate you into Babylon.
44 The tabernacle of witnessing was with our fathers in desert, as God assigned to them, and spake to Moses [as God disposed to them, speaking to Moses], that he should make it after the form that he saw.
45 Which also our fathers took with Jesus, and brought into the possession of heathen men, which God putted away [the which God put away] from the face of our fathers, till into the days of David,
46 that found grace with God, and asked that he should find a tabernacle to God of Jacob.
47 But Solomon builded the house to him. [Solomon forsooth built an house to him.]
48 But the high God [But the alder-highest] dwelleth not in things made by hand, as he saith by the prophet,
49 Heaven is a seat to me, and the earth is the stool of my feet; what house shall ye build to me, saith the Lord, either what place is of my resting [or which is the place of my resting]?
50 Whether mine hand made not all these things?
51 With hard neck [With hard nol], and uncircumcised hearts and ears ye withstand evermore the Holy Ghost; and as your fathers, so ye.
52 Whom of the prophets have not your fathers pursued, and have slain them that before-told of the coming of the rightful man [and have slain them that before-told of the coming of the just man], whose traitors and manslayers ye were now?
53 Which took the law in ordinance of angels, and have not kept it.
54 And they heard these things, and were diversely tormented in their hearts, and they grinded [and gnashed, or grinded,] with teeth on him.
55 But when Stephen was full of the Holy Ghost, he beheld into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right half of the virtue of God.
56 And he said, Lo! I see heavens opened, and man's Son standing on the right half of the virtue of God. [And he said, Lo! I see heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right half of the virtue of God.]
57 And they cried with a great voice, and stopped their ears, and made with one will an assault into him.
58 And they brought him out of the city [And they casted him out of the city], and stoned [him]. And the witnesses did off their clothes, beside the feet of a young man, that was called Saul.
59 And they stoned Stephen, that called God to help, saying [And they stoned Stephen in-calling, and saying], Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled, and cried with a great voice, and said, Lord, set not to them this sin. And when he had said this thing, he died [And when he had said this thing, he slept, or died, in the Lord].
