7 大祭司說：“真有這些事嗎？” 2 司提反說：“各位父老兄弟請聽！我們的祖宗亞伯拉罕，在美索不達米亞，還沒有住在哈蘭的時候，榮耀的　神向他顯現， 3 對他說：‘你要離開本地本族，到我指示你的地方去。’ 4 他就離開迦勒底人的地方，住在哈蘭。他父親死後，　神又叫他從那裡遷到你們現在所住的地方。 5 在這裡　神並沒有賜他產業，連立足之地也沒有。但　神應許把這地賜給他和他的後裔為業，雖然那時他還沒有兒子。 6 　神就這樣說：‘你的後裔必在外地寄居，人要奴役、虐待他們四百年。’ 7 　神又說：‘奴役他們的那個國家，我要親自懲罰。以後，他們要出來，在這地方事奉我。’ 8 　神也賜他割禮為約。這樣，亞伯拉罕生了以撒，第八天就給他行了割禮。後來，以撒生雅各，雅各生了十二位祖先。

9 “祖先妒忌約瑟，把他賣到埃及去，然而　神與他同在， 10 救他脫離一切苦難，使他在埃及王法老面前，有智慧、得恩寵。法老立他為首相，管理埃及和法老的全家。 11 後來埃及和迦南全地遭遇饑荒、大災難，我們的祖先找不到糧食。 12 雅各聽見埃及有穀糧，就派我們的祖先去，這是第一次。 13 第二次的時候，約瑟就向哥哥們表露自己的身世，法老才知道約瑟的家世。 14 約瑟就派人去把他父親雅各和全家七十五人都接來。 15 於是雅各下了埃及。後來他和我們祖先都死了， 16 運到示劍，埋葬在亞伯拉罕用銀子向哈抹子孫買來的墳地裡。

17 “　神給亞伯拉罕的應許快要實現的時候，以色列人在埃及人口繁盛增多； 18 但是，到了另一位不認識約瑟的君王興起統治埃及的時候， 19 他就謀害我們的同胞，虐待我們的祖先，逼他們拋棄自己的嬰孩，不容嬰孩存活。 20 就在那時候，摩西出生了，他非常俊美，在父親的家中撫養了三個月。 21 他被拋棄的時候，法老的女兒把他拾起來，當作兒子撫養。 22 摩西學盡了埃及人的一切學問，說話行事都有能力。

23 “到了四十歲，他心中起了一個念頭，要去看望自己的同胞以色列人。 24 當他看見有一個人受欺負，就去護衛，為那受屈的抱不平，打死了那個埃及人。 25 他以為同胞們都必知道　神要藉著他的手拯救他們，事實上他們卻不知道。 26 第二天，有人在打架，摩西就出面調解，說：‘你們是弟兄，為甚麼彼此欺負呢？’ 27 那欺負鄰舍的把他推開，說：‘誰立了你作我們的領袖和審判官呢？ 28 難道你想殺我，像昨天殺那個埃及人一樣嗎？’ 29 摩西因為這句話，就逃到米甸地寄居，在那裡生了兩個兒子。

30 “過了四十年，在西奈山的曠野，有一位使者，在荊棘中的火燄裡，向摩西顯現。 31 他見了這個異象，十分驚奇；他正上前察看的時候，就有主的聲音說： 32 ‘我是你祖宗的　神，就是亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的　神。’摩西戰戰兢兢，不敢觀看。 33 主對他說：‘把你腳上的鞋脫掉，因為你所站的地方是聖地。 34 我的子民在埃及所受的痛苦，我實在看見了；他們的歎息我也聽見了，我下來是要救他們。你來，我要派你到埃及去。’ 35 他們拒絕了這位摩西，說：‘誰立了你作領袖和審判官呢？’但　神藉著在荊棘中向他顯現的使者的手，派他作領袖和救贖者。 36 這人領他們出來，並且在埃及地、紅海和曠野，行奇事神蹟四十年。 37 以前那位對以色列人說‘　神要從你們弟兄中間，給你們興起一位先知像我’的，就是這摩西。 38 那曾經在曠野的大會中，和那在西奈山上對他說話的使者同在，也與我們的祖先同在的，就是他。他領受了活的聖言，傳給我們。 39 我們的祖先不肯聽從他，反而把他推開，他們的心已經轉向了埃及， 40 就對亞倫說：‘給我們做一些神像，可以走在我們前頭。因為把我們從埃及地領出來的那個摩西，我們不知道他遭遇了甚麼事。’ 41 在那些日子裡，他們做了一個牛犢，把祭物獻給那偶像，並且因自己手所做的而歡樂。 42 於是　神轉身離開，任憑他們事奉天象，正如先知書所說：

‘以色列家啊，

你們在曠野四十年，

豈是將祭牲和祭物獻給我呢？

43 你們抬著摩洛的帳幕，

和理番神的星，

就是你們做來敬拜的像。

所以我要把你們放逐到巴比倫那一邊去。’

44 “我們的祖先在曠野有作證的帳幕，就是跟摩西談話的那位指示他，依照他看見的樣式做的。 45 我們的祖先相繼承受了這帳幕，　神把外族人從他們面前趕走以後，他們就同約書亞把帳幕帶進所得為業的地方，直到大衛的日子。 46 大衛在　神面前蒙了恩，就求為雅各的　神找個居所， 47 而由所羅門為他建造殿宇。 48 其實至高者並不住人手所造的，正如先知說：

49 ‘主說：天是我的寶座，

地是我的腳凳，

你們要為我建造怎樣的殿呢？

哪裡是我安息的地方呢？

50 這一切不都是我手所造的嗎？’

51 “你們頸項剛硬、心和耳都未受割禮的人哪！你們時常抗拒聖靈，你們的祖先怎樣，你們也怎樣。 52 有哪一個先知，你們的祖先不迫害呢？你們殺了那些預先宣告那義者要來的人，現在又把那義者出賣了，殺害了。 53 你們領受了由天使傳達的律法，卻不遵守。”

司提反被石頭打死

54 眾人聽了這些話，心中非常惱怒，就向著司提反咬牙切齒。 55 但司提反被聖靈充滿，定睛望著天，看見　神的榮耀，並且看見耶穌站在　神的右邊， 56 就說：“看哪！我看見天開了，人子站在　神的右邊。” 57 眾人大聲喊叫，掩著耳朵，一齊向他衝過去， 58 把他推出城外，用石頭打他。那些證人把自己的衣服，放在一個名叫掃羅的青年人腳前。 59 他們用石頭打司提反的時候，他呼求說：“主耶穌啊，求你接收我的靈魂！” 60 然後跪下來大聲喊著說：“主啊，不要把這罪歸給他們！”說了這話，就睡了。

Discurso de Esteban ante el Consejo

7 —¿Son ciertas estas acusaciones? —le preguntó el sumo sacerdote.

2 Él contestó:

—Hermanos y padres, ¡escúchenme! El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abraham cuando este aún vivía en Mesopotamia, antes de radicarse en Jarán. 3 “Deja tu tierra y a tus parientes —le dijo Dios—, y ve a la tierra que te mostraré”.[a]

4 »Entonces salió de la tierra de los caldeos y se estableció en Jarán. Desde allí, después de la muerte de su padre, Dios lo trasladó a esta tierra donde ustedes viven ahora. 5 No le dio herencia alguna en ella, ni siquiera dónde plantar el pie, pero prometió dársela en posesión a él y a su descendencia, aunque Abraham no tenía ni un solo hijo todavía. 6 Dios le dijo así: “Tus descendientes vivirán como extranjeros en tierra extraña, donde serán esclavizados y maltratados durante cuatrocientos años. 7 Pero yo castigaré a la nación que los esclavizará, y luego tus descendientes saldrán de esa tierra y me adorarán en este lugar”.[b] 8 Hizo con Abraham el pacto que tenía por señal la circuncisión. Así, cuando Abraham tuvo a su hijo Isaac, lo circuncidó a los ocho días de nacido; Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.

9 »Por envidia los patriarcas vendieron a José como esclavo, quien fue llevado a Egipto; pero Dios estaba con él 10 y lo libró de todas sus desgracias. Le dio sabiduría para ganarse el favor del faraón, rey de Egipto, quien lo nombró gobernador del país y del palacio real.

11 »Hubo entonces un hambre que azotó a todo Egipto y a Canaán, y causó mucho sufrimiento. Nuestros antepasados no encontraban alimentos. 12 Al enterarse Jacob de que había comida en Egipto, mandó allá a nuestros antepasados en una primera visita. 13 En la segunda visita, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos y así el faraón llegó a conocer a la familia de José. 14 Después de esto, José mandó llamar a su padre Jacob y a toda su familia, setenta y cinco personas en total. 15 Bajó entonces Jacob a Egipto, y allí murieron él y nuestros antepasados. 16 Sus restos fueron llevados a Siquén y puestos en el sepulcro que a buen precio Abraham había comprado a los hijos de Jamor en Siquén.

17 »Cuando ya se acercaba el tiempo de que se cumpliera la promesa que Dios había hecho a Abraham, el pueblo crecía y se multiplicaba en Egipto. 18 Por aquel entonces llegó al poder en Egipto un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José. 19 Este rey usó de artimañas con nuestro pueblo y oprimió a nuestros antepasados, obligándolos a dejar abandonados a sus hijos recién nacidos para que murieran.

20 »En aquel tiempo nació Moisés y era hermoso a los ojos de Dios.[c] Por tres meses se crio en la casa de su padre 21 y, al quedar abandonado, la hija del faraón lo adoptó y lo crio como a su propio hijo. 22 Así Moisés fue instruido en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios, y era poderoso en palabra y en obra.

23 »Cuando cumplió cuarenta años, Moisés tuvo el deseo de visitar a sus hermanos israelitas. 24 Al ver que un egipcio maltrataba a uno de ellos, acudió en su defensa y lo vengó matando al egipcio. 25 Moisés suponía que sus hermanos reconocerían que Dios iba a liberarlos por medio de él, pero ellos no lo comprendieron así. 26 Al día siguiente, Moisés sorprendió a dos israelitas que estaban peleando. Trató de reconciliarlos, diciéndoles: “Señores, ustedes son hermanos; ¿por qué quieren hacerse daño?”.

27 »Pero el que estaba maltratando al otro empujó a Moisés y le dijo: “¿Y quién te nombró gobernante y juez sobre nosotros? 28 ¿Acaso quieres matarme a mí, como mataste ayer al egipcio?”.[d] 29 Al oír esto, Moisés huyó a Madián; allí vivió como extranjero y tuvo dos hijos.

30 »Pasados cuarenta años, se le apareció un ángel en el desierto cercano al monte Sinaí, entre las llamas de una zarza ardiente. 31 Moisés se asombró de lo que veía. Al acercarse para observar, oyó la voz del Señor: 32 “Yo soy el Dios de tus antepasados, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob”.[e] Moisés se puso a temblar de miedo y no se atrevía a mirar.

33 »Le dijo el Señor: “Quítate las sandalias, porque estás pisando tierra santa. 34 En verdad he visto la opresión que sufre mi pueblo en Egipto. Los he escuchado quejarse, así que he descendido para librarlos. Ahora ven y te enviaré de vuelta a Egipto”.[f]

35 »A este mismo Moisés, a quien habían rechazado diciéndole: “¿Y quién te nombró gobernante y juez?”, Dios lo envió para ser gobernante y libertador, mediante el poder del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza. 36 Él los sacó de Egipto haciendo prodigios y señales tanto en la tierra de Egipto como en el mar Rojo y en el desierto durante cuarenta años.

37 »Este Moisés dijo a los israelitas: “Dios hará surgir para ustedes, de entre sus hermanos, a un profeta como yo”.[g] 38 Este mismo Moisés estuvo en la asamblea en el desierto, con el ángel que le habló en el monte Sinaí y con nuestros antepasados. Fue también él quien recibió palabras de vida para comunicárnoslas a nosotros.

39 »Nuestros antepasados no quisieron obedecerlo a él, sino que lo rechazaron. Lo que realmente deseaban era volver a Egipto, 40 por lo cual dijeron a Aarón: “Tienes que hacernos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, porque a ese Moisés que nos sacó de Egipto, ¡no sabemos qué pudo haberle pasado!”.[h]

41 »Entonces se hicieron un ídolo en forma de becerro. Le ofrecieron sacrificios y tuvieron fiesta en honor a la obra de sus manos. 42 Pero Dios les volvió la espalda y los entregó a que rindieran culto a los astros. Así está escrito en el libro de los Profetas:

»“Casa de Israel, ¿acaso me ofrecieron ustedes sacrificios y ofrendas
    durante los cuarenta años en el desierto?
43 Al contrario, ustedes se hicieron cargo del santuario de Moloc,
    de la estrella del dios Refán,
    y de las imágenes que hicieron para adorarlas.
Por lo tanto, los mandaré al exilio”[i] más allá de Babilonia.

44 »Nuestros antepasados tenían en el desierto la Tienda con las tablas del pacto, hecho como Dios había ordenado a Moisés, según el modelo que este había visto. 45 Después de haber recibido el santuario, lo trajeron consigo bajo el mando de Josué, cuando conquistaron la tierra de las naciones que Dios expulsó de la presencia de ellos. Allí permaneció hasta el tiempo de David, 46 quien disfrutó del favor de Dios y pidió que le permitiera proveer una morada para el Dios[j] de Jacob. 47 Pero fue Salomón quien construyó la casa.

48 »Sin embargo, el Altísimo no habita en casas construidas por manos humanas. Como dice el profeta:

49 »“El cielo es mi trono,
    y la tierra, el estrado de mis pies.
¿Qué casa me pueden construir?
    —dice el Señor—.
    ¿Dónde estará el lugar de mi reposo?
50 ¿No es mi mano la que ha hecho todas estas cosas?”.[k]

51 »¡Tercos, duros de corazón y torpes de oídos![l] Ustedes son iguales que sus antepasados: ¡Siempre resisten al Espíritu Santo! 52 ¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron sus antepasados? Ellos mataron a los que de antemano anunciaron la venida del Justo, y ahora a este lo han traicionado y asesinado 53 ustedes, que recibieron la Ley promulgada por medio de ángeles y no la han obedecido.

Muerte de Esteban

54 Al oír esto, rechinando los dientes, se enojaron mucho contra él. 55 Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, fijó la mirada en el cielo y vio la gloria de Dios y a Jesús de pie a la derecha de Dios.

56 —¡Veo el cielo abierto —exclamó—, y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios!

57 Entonces ellos, gritando a voz en cuello, se taparon los oídos y todos a una se abalanzaron sobre él, 58 lo sacaron a empellones fuera de la ciudad y comenzaron a apedrearlo. Los acusadores encargaron sus mantos a un joven llamado Saulo.

59 Mientras lo apedreaban, Esteban oraba.

—Señor Jesús —decía—, recibe mi espíritu.

60 Luego cayó de rodillas y gritó:

—¡Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado!

Cuando hubo dicho esto, murió.[m]

Stephen’s Speech to the Sanhedrin

7 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”

2 To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers,(A) listen to me! The God of glory(B) appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.(C) 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[a](D)

4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(E) 5 He gave him no inheritance here,(F) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(G) even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(H) 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[b](I) 8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(J) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(K) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(L) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(M)

9 “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(N) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(O) But God was with him(P) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(Q)

11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(R) 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.(S) 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,(T) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.(U) 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,(V) seventy-five in all.(W) 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.(X) 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.(Y)

17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(Z) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[c](AA) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(AB)

20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[d] For three months he was cared for by his family.(AC) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(AD) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(AE) and was powerful in speech and action.

23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’

27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(AF) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(AG)

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(AH) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(AI) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(AJ)

33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(AK) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g](AL)

35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(AM) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(AN) and performed wonders and signs(AO) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(AP) and for forty years in the wilderness.(AQ)

37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[h](AR) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(AS) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(AT) and he received living words(AU) to pass on to us.(AV)

39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(AW) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[i](AX) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(AY) 42 But God turned away from them(AZ) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(BA) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:

“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
    forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
    and the star of your god Rephan,
    the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[j](BB) beyond Babylon.

44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(BC) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(BD) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(BE) It remained in the land until the time of David,(BF) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[k](BG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(BH)

48 “However, the Most High(BI) does not live in houses made by human hands.(BJ) As the prophet says:

49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
    and the earth is my footstool.(BK)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
    Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[l](BL)

51 “You stiff-necked people!(BM) Your hearts(BN) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(BO) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(BP)— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(BQ) but have not obeyed it.”

The Stoning of Stephen

54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(BR) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(BS) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(BT) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(BU) and the Son of Man(BV) standing at the right hand of God.”

57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(BW) and began to stone him.(BX) Meanwhile, the witnesses(BY) laid their coats(BZ) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(CA)

59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(CB) 60 Then he fell on his knees(CC) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(CD) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(CE)
