7 大祭司说：“真有这些事吗？” 2 司提反说：“各位父老兄弟请听！我们的祖宗亚伯拉罕，在美索不达米亚，还没有住在哈兰的时候，荣耀的 神向他显现， 3 对他说：‘你要离开本地本族，到我指示你的地方去。’ 4 他就离开迦勒底人的地方，住在哈兰。他父亲死后， 神又叫他从那里迁到你们现在所住的地方。 5 在这里 神并没有赐他产业，连立足之地也没有。但 神应许把这地赐给他和他的后裔为业，虽然那时他还没有儿子。 6 神就这样说：‘你的后裔必在外地寄居，人要奴役、虐待他们四百年。’ 7 神又说：‘奴役他们的那个国家，我要亲自惩罚。以后，他们要出来，在这地方事奉我。’ 8 神也赐他割礼为约。这样，亚伯拉罕生了以撒，第八天就给他行了割礼。后来，以撒生雅各，雅各生了十二位祖先。
9 “祖先妒忌约瑟，把他卖到埃及去，然而 神与他同在， 10 救他脱离一切苦难，使他在埃及王法老面前，有智慧、得恩宠。法老立他为首相，管理埃及和法老的全家。 11 后来埃及和迦南全地遭遇饥荒、大灾难，我们的祖先找不到粮食。 12 雅各听见埃及有谷粮，就派我们的祖先去，这是第一次。 13 第二次的时候，约瑟就向哥哥们表露自己的身世，法老才知道约瑟的家世。 14 约瑟就派人去把他父亲雅各和全家七十五人都接来。 15 于是雅各下了埃及。后来他和我们祖先都死了， 16 运到示剑，埋葬在亚伯拉罕用银子向哈抹子孙买来的坟地里。
17 “ 神给亚伯拉罕的应许快要实现的时候，以色列人在埃及人口繁盛增多； 18 但是，到了另一位不认识约瑟的君王兴起统治埃及的时候， 19 他就谋害我们的同胞，虐待我们的祖先，逼他们拋弃自己的婴孩，不容婴孩存活。 20 就在那时候，摩西出生了，他非常俊美，在父亲的家中抚养了三个月。 21 他被拋弃的时候，法老的女儿把他拾起来，当作儿子抚养。 22 摩西学尽了埃及人的一切学问，说话行事都有能力。

30 “过了四十年，在西奈山的旷野，有一位使者，在荆棘中的火焰里，向摩西显现。 31 他见了这个异象，十分惊奇；他正上前察看的时候，就有主的声音说： 32 ‘我是你祖宗的 神，就是亚伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的 神。’摩西战战兢兢，不敢观看。 33 主对他说：‘把你脚上的鞋脱掉，因为你所站的地方是圣地。 34 我的子民在埃及所受的痛苦，我实在看见了；他们的叹息我也听见了，我下来是要救他们。你来，我要派你到埃及去。’ 35 他们拒绝了这位摩西，说：‘谁立了你作领袖和审判官呢？’但 神借着在荆棘中向他显现的使者的手，派他作领袖和救赎者。 36 这人领他们出来，并且在埃及地、红海和旷野，行奇事神迹四十年。 37 以前那位对以色列人说‘ 神要从你们弟兄中间，给你们兴起一位先知像我’的，就是这摩西。 38 那曾经在旷野的大会中，和那在西奈山上对他说话的使者同在，也与我们的祖先同在的，就是他。他领受了活的圣言，传给我们。 39 我们的祖先不肯听从他，反而把他推开，他们的心已经转向了埃及， 40 就对亚伦说：‘给我们做一些神像，可以走在我们前头。因为把我们从埃及地领出来的那个摩西，我们不知道他遭遇了甚么事。’ 41 在那些日子里，他们做了一个牛犊，把祭物献给那偶像，并且因自己手所做的而欢乐。 42 于是 神转身离开，任凭他们事奉天象，正如先知书所说：
‘以色列家啊，
你们在旷野四十年，
岂是将祭牲和祭物献给我呢？
43 你们抬着摩洛的帐幕，
和理番神的星，
就是你们做来敬拜的像。
所以我要把你们放逐到巴比伦那一边去。’
44 “我们的祖先在旷野有作证的帐幕，就是跟摩西谈话的那位指示他，依照他看见的样式做的。 45 我们的祖先相继承受了这帐幕， 神把外族人从他们面前赶走以后，他们就同约书亚把帐幕带进所得为业的地方，直到大卫的日子。 46 大卫在 神面前蒙了恩，就求为雅各的 神找个居所， 47 而由所罗门为他建造殿宇。 48 其实至高者并不住人手所造的，正如先知说：
49 ‘主说：天是我的宝座，
地是我的脚凳，
你们要为我建造怎样的殿呢？
哪里是我安息的地方呢？
50 这一切不都是我手所造的吗？’
51 “你们颈项刚硬、心和耳都未受割礼的人哪！你们时常抗拒圣灵，你们的祖先怎样，你们也怎样。 52 有哪一个先知，你们的祖先不迫害呢？你们杀了那些预先宣告那义者要来的人，现在又把那义者出卖了，杀害了。 53 你们领受了由天使传达的律法，却不遵守。”

54 众人听了这些话，心中非常恼怒，就向着司提反咬牙切齿。 55 但司提反被圣灵充满，定睛望着天，看见 神的荣耀，并且看见耶稣站在 神的右边， 56 就说：“看哪！我看见天开了，人子站在 神的右边。” 57 众人大声喊叫，掩着耳朵，一齐向他冲过去， 58 把他推出城外，用石头打他。那些证人把自己的衣服，放在一个名叫扫罗的青年人脚前。 59 他们用石头打司提反的时候，他呼求说：“主耶稣啊，求你接收我的灵魂！” 60 然后跪下来大声喊着说：“主啊，不要把这罪归给他们！”说了这话，就睡了。

A defesa de Estêvão
7 O Grande Sacerdote perguntou a Estêvão:
— O que essas pessoas estão dizendo é verdade?
2 Estêvão respondeu:
— Irmãos e pais, escutem! O glorioso Deus apareceu ao nosso antepassado Abraão quando este morava na região da Mesopotâmia, antes de ir morar na cidade de Harã. 3 E Deus lhe disse: “Saia da sua terra e do meio dos seus parentes e vá para uma terra que eu lhe mostrarei.” 4 Então ele saiu da Caldeia e foi morar em Harã. Depois que o pai dele morreu, Deus trouxe Abraão para esta terra onde vocês agora estão morando. 5 Ele não deu a Abraão nem mesmo um palmo desta terra, mas prometeu que ia lhe dar toda esta terra e que depois ela seria dos seus descendentes. Quando Deus fez essa promessa, Abraão ainda não tinha filhos. 6 Ele disse a Abraão: “Os seus descendentes vão viver como estrangeiros em outra terra. Ali eles serão escravos e serão maltratados durante quatrocentos anos.”
7 — E Deus disse ainda: “Eu castigarei a nação que os escravizar. Depois disso eles voltarão daquela terra e me adorarão neste lugar.” 8 Deus deu a Abraão a cerimônia da circuncisão como prova da aliança que fez com ele. Por isso Abraão circuncidou o seu filho Isaque uma semana depois do seu nascimento. Isaque circuncidou o seu filho Jacó, e Jacó fez o mesmo com os seus doze filhos, os patriarcas.
9 Estêvão continuou:
— Os irmãos de José tinham inveja dele e o venderam para ser escravo no Egito. Mas Deus estava com ele 10 e o livrou de todas as suas aflições. Quando José apareceu diante de Faraó, rei do Egito, Deus lhe deu sabedoria e modos agradáveis. E Faraó o nomeou governador do Egito e do palácio do rei. 11 Depois houve falta de alimentos e muito sofrimento no Egito e em Canaã, e os nossos antepassados não tinham mais o que comer. 12 Mais tarde, Jacó ouviu dizer que no Egito havia trigo e mandou pela primeira vez os nossos antepassados até lá. 13 Na segunda vez José contou aos seus irmãos quem ele era, e Faraó ficou sabendo da família de José. 14 Então José mandou buscar o seu pai Jacó e todos os seus parentes, a fim de irem para o Egito; eram setenta e cinco pessoas ao todo. 15 Jacó foi para o Egito, e ali ele e os nossos antepassados ficaram morando até o dia da morte deles. 16 Depois os corpos deles foram trazidos para Siquém e postos no túmulo que Abraão tinha comprado dos descendentes de Hamor por um certo preço.
17 — Quando estava chegando o tempo de Deus cumprir o juramento que havia feito a Abraão, o nosso povo tinha aumentado muito no Egito. 18 Então um rei que não sabia nada a respeito de José começou a governar o Egito. 19 Esse rei enganou e maltratou os nossos antepassados, a ponto de obrigá-los a abandonar as suas próprias criancinhas para que elas morressem. 20 Nesse tempo nasceu Moisés, que era uma linda criança, e durante três meses os seus pais cuidaram dele em casa. 21 Mas, quando tiveram de abandoná-lo, a filha do rei o adotou e criou como seu próprio filho. 22 E assim ele foi instruído em toda a ciência dos egípcios e se tornou um homem que falava e agia com autoridade.
23 Estêvão disse ainda:
— Quando Moisés já estava com quarenta anos, resolveu ir ver a sua gente, os israelitas. 24 Ali viu um egípcio maltratando um homem do seu povo. Então defendeu o israelita e o vingou, matando o egípcio. 25 Moisés pensava que os israelitas entenderiam que Deus ia libertá-los por meio dele, mas eles não entenderam. 26 No dia seguinte Moisés viu dois israelitas brigando. E, tentando apartar a briga, disse: “Homens, escutem! Vocês são irmãos; por que estão brigando?”
27 — Mas aquele que estava maltratando o outro empurrou Moisés para um lado e disse: “Quem pôs você como nosso chefe ou nosso juiz? 28 Você está querendo me matar como matou o egípcio ontem?” 29 Quando Moisés ouviu isso, fugiu do Egito e foi morar na terra de Midiã, e ali nasceram dois filhos dele.
30 — Quarenta anos mais tarde, quando Moisés estava no deserto, perto do monte Sinai, um anjo apareceu a ele, no meio do fogo de um espinheiro que estava queimando. 31 Moisés ficou admirado com o que estava vendo e chegou perto para ver melhor. Então ouviu a voz do Senhor, que disse: 32 “Eu sou o Deus dos seus antepassados, o Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Jacó.” Moisés tremia de medo e não tinha coragem de olhar. 33 Então o Senhor disse: “Tire as sandálias, pois o lugar onde você está é um lugar sagrado. 34 Eu tenho visto como o meu povo está sendo maltratado no Egito; tenho ouvido os gemidos deles e desci para libertá-los. Agora vou mandar você para o Egito.”
35 E Estêvão continuou:
— Esse mesmo Moisés foi rejeitado pelo povo de Israel. Eles lhe perguntaram: “Quem pôs você como nosso chefe ou nosso juiz?” Deus enviou esse Moisés como líder e libertador, com a ajuda do anjo que apareceu no espinheiro. 36 Foi ele quem tirou os israelitas do Egito, fazendo milagres e maravilhas naquela terra, e também no mar Vermelho, e no deserto, durante quarenta anos. 37 Foi esse mesmo Moisés quem disse aos israelitas: “Do meio de vocês Deus escolherá e enviará para vocês um profeta, assim como ele me enviou.” 38 Foi Moisés quem esteve com os israelitas reunidos no deserto; ele esteve lá com os nossos antepassados e com o anjo que falou com ele no monte Sinai. E foi Moisés quem recebeu e nos entregou as mensagens vivas de Deus.
39 — Os nossos antepassados não quiseram obedecer a Moisés, mas o rejeitaram e queriam voltar para o Egito. 40 Eles disseram a Arão: “Faça para nós deuses que irão à nossa frente. Não sabemos o que aconteceu com Moisés, aquele homem que nos tirou do Egito.” 41 Então fizeram uma imagem em forma de bezerro e mataram animais para oferecer a ela como sacrifício. Depois deram uma festa em honra da imagem que eles mesmos tinham feito. 42 Mas Deus se afastou deles e deixou que adorassem as estrelas do céu, como está escrito no Livro dos Profetas:
“Ó povo de Israel, não foi para mim
que vocês mataram e ofereceram
animais em sacrifício
durante quarenta anos no deserto.
43 Vocês carregaram a barraca
do deus Moloque
e também a imagem da estrela de Raifã,
o deus de vocês.
Esses eram ídolos que vocês tinham feito
para adorar.
Por isso vou mandar vocês
para além da Babilônia.”
44 — No deserto, os nossos antepassados tinham consigo a Tenda da Presença de Deus. Essa Tenda foi feita como Deus tinha mandado Moisés fazer, de acordo com o modelo que Deus lhe havia mostrado. 45 Eles tinham recebido a Tenda dos seus antepassados e a levaram quando foram com Josué e conquistaram as terras das nações que Deus expulsou de diante deles. A Tenda ficou lá com eles até o tempo de Davi. 46 Davi recebeu a aprovação de Deus e pediu licença para construir uma casa para o Deus de Jacó. 47 Mas foi Salomão quem construiu a casa de Deus.
48 — Porém o Altíssimo não mora em casas construídas por seres humanos. Como disse o profeta:
49 “O céu é o meu trono, diz o Senhor,
e a terra é o estrado onde descanso
os meus pés.
Que tipo de casa vocês poderiam construir
para mim?
Como conseguiriam construir um lugar
onde eu pudesse morar?
50 Por acaso não fui eu quem fez
todas as coisas?”
51 E Estêvão terminou, dizendo:
— Como vocês são teimosos! Como são duros de coração e surdos para ouvir a mensagem de Deus! Vocês sempre têm rejeitado o Espírito Santo, como os seus antepassados rejeitaram. 52 Qual foi o profeta que os antepassados de vocês não perseguiram? Eles mataram os mensageiros de Deus que no passado anunciaram a vinda do Bom Servo. E agora vocês o traíram e o mataram. 53 Vocês receberam a lei por meio de anjos e não têm obedecido a essa lei.
A morte de Estêvão
54 Quando os membros do Conselho Superior acabaram de ouvir o que Estêvão tinha dito, ficaram furiosos e rangeram os dentes contra ele. 55 Mas Estêvão, cheio do Espírito Santo, olhou firmemente para o céu e viu a glória de Deus. E viu também Jesus em pé, ao lado direito de Deus. 56 Então disse:
— Olhem! Eu estou vendo o céu aberto e o Filho do Homem em pé, ao lado direito de Deus.
57 Mas eles taparam os ouvidos e, gritando bem alto, avançaram todos juntos contra Estêvão. 58 Depois o jogaram para fora da cidade e o apedrejaram. E as testemunhas deixaram um moço chamado Saulo tomando conta das suas capas. 59 Enquanto eles atiravam as pedras, Estêvão chamava Jesus, dizendo:
— Senhor Jesus, recebe o meu espírito!
60 Depois, ajoelhou-se e gritou com voz bem forte:
— Senhor, não condenes esta gente por causa deste pecado!
E, depois que disse isso, ele morreu.

2 And Stefanos said, "Achim and Avot, hear me! Elohei Hakavod appeared to Avraham Avinu while he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in Charan [TEHILLIM 29:3; BERESHIS 11:31; 15:7]
3 “And Hashem said to Avram, ‘Depart from your country and from your people and come to the land which I shall show you.') [Gn 12:1; 48:4]
4 "Then having departed from the land of the Chaldeans, he settled in Charan. And from there, after the mavet of his Av, he was settled by Hashem here in this land in which we now are living. [BERESHIS 12:5]
5 "And Hashem did not give to him a nachalah (inheritance) in it nor AD MIDRACH KAF REGEL ("even enough to put your foot on" DEVARIM 2:5); and yet, even when he had no ben, the havtachah (promise) of Hashem to him was ES HAARETZ HAZOT E’TEN ("This land I will give") to him and to his zera (seed) after him. 7 "V’GAM ES HAGOY ASHER YA’AVODU DAN ANOCHI ("And whatever nation to which they shall be in bondage I myself will judge" said Hashem, VACHAREI KHEN YETZU ("And after that they will come out") and serve me in this place." [BERESHIS 15:13,14; SHEMOT 3:12]
8 "And he gave to him bris milah. And thus Avraham Avinu became the father of Yitzchak and he did his bris milah on the Yom HaShemini and Yitzchak became the father of Ya’akov and Ya’akov of the Sheneym Asar HaAvot. [BERESHIS 17:9-14; 21:2-4; 25:26; 29:31-35; 30:5-13, 17-24; 35:16-26]

10 "And Hashem delivered Yosef from all his tzoros and gave to him Chen v’Chesed Hashem and chochmah before Pharaoh king of Mitzrayim (Egypt) and he appointed him his grand vizier to rule over Mitzrayim and over his whole bais. [Gn 41:37-45; Ps 105:20-22]
11 "Now a famine came over all Mitzrayim (Egypt) and Canaan and tzarah gedolah (great tribulation) and Avoteinu were not finding okhel. [Gn 41:54; 42:2,5]

15 "And Ya’akov Avinu went down to Mitzrayim (Egypt) and he died, as did Avoteinu. [Gn 46:5 7; 49:33; Ex 1:6]
16 "And they were brought back to Shechem and were placed in the kever (tomb) which Avraham bought for a sum of silver from the banim of Chamor in Shechem. [Gn 23:16-20; 33:18, 19; 50:13; Josh 24:32]
17 "Now as the time of the havtachah (promise) was drawing near, which Hashem promised to Avraham Avinu, the people grew and were multiplied in Mitzrayim [Ex 1:7; Ps 105:24]
18 "Until over Mitzrayim there appeared a MELECH CHADASH ASHER LO YADA ES YOSEF ("a new king who knew not Yosef"). [Ex 1:7,8]
19 "This king exploited by his shrewdness our nation and mistreated Avoteinu so as to make their ollelim (infants) exposed in order not to keep them alive. [Ex 1:10-22]
20 "And at this time Moshe Rabbenu was born and he was well pleasing to Hashem; and he was nurtured for shloshah chodashim in the bais of his abba. [Ex 2:2]
21 "And after he had been exposed, the bat Pharaoh took Moshe Rabbeinu away, and brought him up as her own son.[Ex 2:3-10]
22 "And Moshe Rabbenu was instructed in all the chochmah of the Egyptians and in dvarim (words) and pe’ulot (deeds) he was given ko’ach. [1Kgs 4:30; Isa 19:11]
23 "But when arba’im shanah of his days were completed, it entered into his lev (heart) to visit his Achim of the Bnei Yisroel. [Ex 2:11]
24 "And having seen one of them being treated unjustly he retaliated and brought yashrus (justice) for the one being oppressed by striking down the Egyptian. [Ex 2:12]
25 "Now he was assuming that his achim had binah that Hashem by the hand of Moshe was giving Yeshu’at Eloheinu to them, but they did not have binah (understanding).
26 "And on the next day he came to them as they were fighting and Moshe was trying to reconcile them in shalom, saying, ‘Anashim, you are achim, why are you injuring one another?’ [Ex 2:13]
27 "But the one injuring his re’a pushed Moshe aside, saying MI SAMECHA L’ISH SAR V’SHOFET ALENU ("Who made you ruler and judge over us?"—Ex 2:14)
28 "HALEHARGENI ATAH OMER KA’ASHER HARAGTA yesterday ES HAMITZRI ("You do not mean to kill me in the same manner as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?")
29 "And Moshe Rabbenu fled at this dvar and became a stranger in eretz Midyan, where he became the father of shnei banim. [Ex 2:11-15]
30 "And at the fulfillment of arba’im shanah a MALACH appeared to him BELABAT EISH MITOCH HASENEH ("in flame of fire from within a burning thorn bush") in the desert of the mountain Sinai. [Ex 3:1-2]
31 "And Moshe Rabbenu having seen this, was mishpoyel (standing in awe) at the chazon and, as he was approaching it to look more closely, there came the kol (voice) of Hashem, [Ex 3:1-4]
32 "I am the G-d of your Avot, I am the G-d of Avraham and the G-d of Yitzchak and the G-d of Ya’akov". But Moshe Rabbenu was trembling with pachad and was not daring to look. [SHEMOT 3:6]
33 "And Hashem said to him, SAL NE’ALECHA ME’AL RAGLECHA ("Take off your sandals from your feet") for the place on which you have stood is admat kodesh (holy ground)." [Ex 3:5; Josh 5:15]

38 "This is the one having been in the kahal (assembly) in the midbar together with the malach speaking to him at the mountain of Sinai, who was with Avoteinu; he is the one who received torat chayyim to give to us. [SHEMOT 19:17; VAYIKRA 27:34; DEVARIM 32:45-47]
39 "And Avoteinu were not willing to have mishma’at (obedience) to Moshe Rabbenu, but they pushed him aside and they turned their levavot back to Mitzrayim, (Egypt) [BAMIDBAR 14:3,4]
40 "Having said to Aharon, Make for us g-ds who will go before us; for this Moshe who led us out of the land of Egypt we do not know what happened to him"). [SHEMOT 32:1,23]

54 And hearing these things, they were infuriated in their levavot, and they were grinding their teeth at him.
55 But being full of the Ruach Hakodesh and having gazed into Shomayim, Stefanos saw the kavod (glory) of Hashem and Yehoshua standing limin Hashem.
56 And Stefanos said, "Hinei, I see Shomayim having been opened and the Ben HaAdam (Moshiach, DANIEL 7:13-14) standing limin Hashem."
57 And having cried out with a kol gadol, they shut their oznayim and they rushed down with one impulse upon Stefanos.
58 And having driven Stefanos outside the Ir (City), they were stoning him. And the edim took off their garments at the feet of a bochur named Sha’ul. [Lv 24:14,16; Dt 17:7]
59 And they went on stoning Stefanos as he called upon Hashem, saying, "Adoneinu, receive my neshamah." [TEHILLIM 31:5]
60 And having fallen down, he cried out in a kol gadol, "Adoneinu, may this aveirah not be held against them!" And having said this, Stefanos fell asleep.

Stephen’s Speech to the Sanhedrin
7 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?”
2 To this he replied: “Brothers and fathers,(A) listen to me! The God of glory(B) appeared to our father Abraham while he was still in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Harran.(C) 3 ‘Leave your country and your people,’ God said, ‘and go to the land I will show you.’[a](D)
4 “So he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Harran. After the death of his father, God sent him to this land where you are now living.(E) 5 He gave him no inheritance here,(F) not even enough ground to set his foot on. But God promised him that he and his descendants after him would possess the land,(G) even though at that time Abraham had no child. 6 God spoke to him in this way: ‘For four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated.(H) 7 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come out of that country and worship me in this place.’[b](I) 8 Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.(J) And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth.(K) Later Isaac became the father of Jacob,(L) and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.(M)
9 “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(N) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(O) But God was with him(P) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(Q)
11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(R) 12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our forefathers on their first visit.(S) 13 On their second visit, Joseph told his brothers who he was,(T) and Pharaoh learned about Joseph’s family.(U) 14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family,(V) seventy-five in all.(W) 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, where he and our ancestors died.(X) 16 Their bodies were brought back to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor at Shechem for a certain sum of money.(Y)
17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise to Abraham, the number of our people in Egypt had greatly increased.(Z) 18 Then ‘a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.’[c](AA) 19 He dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our ancestors by forcing them to throw out their newborn babies so that they would die.(AB)
20 “At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child.[d] For three months he was cared for by his family.(AC) 21 When he was placed outside, Pharaoh’s daughter took him and brought him up as her own son.(AD) 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians(AE) and was powerful in speech and action.
23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. 24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 26 The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’
27 “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us?(AF) 28 Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’[e] 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.(AG)
30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight. As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:(AH) 32 ‘I am the God of your fathers,(AI) the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.(AJ)
33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.(AK) 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g](AL)
35 “This is the same Moses they had rejected with the words, ‘Who made you ruler and judge?’(AM) He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt(AN) and performed wonders and signs(AO) in Egypt, at the Red Sea(AP) and for forty years in the wilderness.(AQ)
37 “This is the Moses who told the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own people.’[h](AR) 38 He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel(AS) who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors;(AT) and he received living words(AU) to pass on to us.(AV)
39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.(AW) 40 They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’[i](AX) 41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and reveled in what their own hands had made.(AY) 42 But God turned away from them(AZ) and gave them over to the worship of the sun, moon and stars.(BA) This agrees with what is written in the book of the prophets:
“‘Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?
43 You have taken up the tabernacle of Molek
and the star of your god Rephan,
the idols you made to worship.
Therefore I will send you into exile’[j](BB) beyond Babylon.
44 “Our ancestors had the tabernacle of the covenant law(BC) with them in the wilderness. It had been made as God directed Moses, according to the pattern he had seen.(BD) 45 After receiving the tabernacle, our ancestors under Joshua brought it with them when they took the land from the nations God drove out before them.(BE) It remained in the land until the time of David,(BF) 46 who enjoyed God’s favor and asked that he might provide a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[k](BG) 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.(BH)
48 “However, the Most High(BI) does not live in houses made by human hands.(BJ) As the prophet says:
49 “‘Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool.(BK)
What kind of house will you build for me?
says the Lord.
Or where will my resting place be?
50 Has not my hand made all these things?’[l](BL)
51 “You stiff-necked people!(BM) Your hearts(BN) and ears are still uncircumcised. You are just like your ancestors: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute?(BO) They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him(BP)— 53 you who have received the law that was given through angels(BQ) but have not obeyed it.”
The Stoning of Stephen
54 When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious(BR) and gnashed their teeth at him. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit,(BS) looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.(BT) 56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open(BU) and the Son of Man(BV) standing at the right hand of God.”
57 At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58 dragged him out of the city(BW) and began to stone him.(BX) Meanwhile, the witnesses(BY) laid their coats(BZ) at the feet of a young man named Saul.(CA)
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”(CB) 60 Then he fell on his knees(CC) and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”(CD) When he had said this, he fell asleep.(CE)
