保罗在非斯都面前申辩
25 非斯都上任三天后，便从凯撒利亚启程上耶路撒冷。 2 祭司长和犹太人的首领向他控告保罗， 3 恳求他将保罗押回耶路撒冷，他们想在途中埋伏杀害保罗。 4 非斯都却拒绝道：“保罗现在关押在凯撒利亚，我很快会回到那里。 5 让你们的首领跟我一起去吧，如果那人有什么过犯，可以在那里告他。”
6 非斯都在耶路撒冷只逗留了十天八天，便返回了凯撒利亚。第二天，他开庭审讯，命人将保罗带上来。 7 保罗被带来后，那些从耶路撒冷下来的犹太人站在他周围，指控他犯了各样严重的罪，但是都没有证据。 8 保罗为自己辩护说：“我从来没有违背犹太律法，亵渎圣殿或反叛凯撒！” 9 非斯都为了讨好犹太人，就对保罗说：“你是否愿意回耶路撒冷接受我的审讯？”
10 保罗说：“我此刻正站在凯撒的法庭上，这就是我应该受审的地方。你很清楚，我并没有做过什么对不起犹太人的事。 11 如果我做错了，犯了该死的罪，我决不逃避！但他们对我的指控毫无根据，谁也不能把我交给他们。我要向凯撒上诉！”
12 非斯都和议会商讨后，说：“你说要上诉凯撒，就去见凯撒吧！”
非斯都请教亚基帕王
13 过了几天，亚基帕王和百妮姬一起到凯撒利亚问候非斯都。 14 他们在那里住了多日，非斯都对王提起保罗的案子，说：“我这里有一个囚犯，是前任总督腓利斯留下来的。 15 上次我去耶路撒冷的时候，犹太人的祭司长和长老控告他，要求我定他的罪。 16 我告诉他们，按照罗马人的规矩，被告还没有跟原告对质和自辩之前，不能定他的罪。 17 后来他们跟我一起来到这里，我没有耽误，第二天就开庭，吩咐把那人带出来审讯。 18 他们都站起来当面指控他，但所告的并非我料想的罪行， 19 不过是关于他们的宗教和一个叫耶稣的人的一些争论。耶稣已经死了，保罗却说他仍然活着。 20 我不知如何审理这些事情，就问被告是否愿意上耶路撒冷受审。 21 但保罗请求留下来，听皇帝定夺，所以我下令仍然扣留他，等着送交凯撒。”
22 亚基帕对非斯都说：“我想亲自听听他的申诉。”
非斯都说：“你明天就会听到。”
23 第二天，亚基帕和百妮姬在众千夫长和城中达官贵人的陪同下，声势浩大地进了法庭。非斯都下令把保罗带上来后， 24 说：“亚基帕王和在座的各位，你们看，就是这个人，所有的犹太人在这里和耶路撒冷都请求我处死他。 25 但我发现他并没有犯什么该死的罪。既然他要向皇帝上诉，我决定把他押去。 26 只是关于这个人，我没有确切的事由可以奏明皇帝[a]。所以，我把他带到各位面前，特别是亚基帕王面前，以便在审讯之后，我可以有所陈奏。 27 因为在我看来，解送犯人却不奏明罪状不合情理。”

Paulus vädjar till kejsaren inför Festus
25 Tre dagar efter det att Festus hade kommit till Caesarea för att ta itu med sina nya uppgifter reste han till Jerusalem.
2 Där blev han uppsökt av översteprästerna och andra judiska ledare, som gav honom sin version av fallet Paulus.
3 De bad honom att genast föra Paulus tillbaka till Jerusalem. Deras plan var att överfalla och döda honom.
4 Men Festus svarade att eftersom Paulus var i Caesarea, och han själv snart skulle återvända dit, skulle
5 de som hade något att säga i fallet följa med honom dit och vara med vid rättegången.
6 Åtta eller tio dagar senare återvände han till Caesarea, och följande dag började rättegången mot Paulus.
7 När Paulus kom till rätten samlade sig judarna från Jerusalem omkring honom och kastade fram många allvarliga anklagelser, som de inte kunde bevisa.
8 Paulus nekade till anklagelserna. Jag är inte skyldig, sa han. Jag har inte handlat i strid med de judiska lagarna eller kränkt templets helighet eller gjort uppror mot den romerska staten.
9 Då frågade Festus, som var angelägen att hålla sig väl med judarna: Är du villig att resa till Jerusalem och där ställas inför rätta inför mig?
10-11 Nej!svarade Paulus. Jag åberopar min rätt som romersk medborgare att få stå till svars inför kejsaren själv. Du vet mycket väl att jag inte är skyldig. Om jag har gjort något som förtjänar döden, så är jag beredd att dö. Men om jag är oskyldig, så har varken du eller någon annan rätt att överlämna mig åt dessa män, så att de kan döda mig. Jag vädjar till kejsaren.
12 Festus överlade med sina rådgivare och svarade sedan: Saken är avgjord! Du har vädjat till kejsaren, och till kejsaren får du fara.
13 Några dagar senare kom kung Agrippa tillsammans med Berenike för att besöka Festus.
14 Medan de var där diskuterade Festus fallet Paulus med kungen. Det finns en fånge här som Felix överlämnade åt mig, sa han till honom.
15 När jag var i Jerusalem fick jag översteprästernas och de judiska ledarnas version av saken. De bad mig se till att han blev avrättad.
16 Naturligtvis sa jag omedelbart till dem att den romerska lagen inte dömer en man förrän han ställts inför rätta. Han måste få möjlighet att försvara sig ansikte mot ansikte med sina åklagare.
17 När de kom hit utlyste jag rättegången redan följande dag och befallde att Paulus skulle föras in.
18 Men anklagelserna mot honom var inte alls vad jag hade väntat mig.
19 De hade något att göra med deras religion och handlade om någon som hette Jesus, som är död, men som Paulus påstår lever!
20 Jag blev förbryllad och visste inte hur jag skulle handla i ett sådant fall, utan frågade honom om han var villig att stå till svars för dessa anklagelser i Jerusalem.
21 Men eftersom Paulus vädjade till kejsaren, beordrade jag honom tillbaka till fängelset i väntan på att jag ska kunna sända honom till Rom.
22 Jag skulle själv vilja höra den mannen, sa Agrippa. Och Festus svarade: Det ska du få göra i morgon!

23 Nästa dag kom kungen och Berenike i full prakt till domsalen, åtföljda av höga officerare och stadens mest framstående män. Festus befallde att Paulus skulle föras in.
24 Sedan talade Festus till de församlade: Kung Agrippa, och alla närvarande, sa han. Det här är den man som judarna både här och i Jerusalem vill straffa med döden.
25 Men enligt min uppfattning har han inte gjort något som förtjänar dödsstraff. Han har dock vädjat till kejsaren, och jag har inget annat val än att sända honom dit.
26 Men vad ska jag skriva om honom till kejsaren? Det finns ju egentligen inga anklagelser mot honom. Därför har jag fört fram honom inför er alla och särskilt inför dig, kung Agrippa, så att du kan fråga ut honom och sedan tala om för mig vad jag ska skriva.
27 Det verkar ju inte rimligt att sända en fånge till kejsaren, utan att ha några anklagelser mot honom!

25 Three days after Festus had entered the province, he went up from Caesarea to Yerushalayim. 2 There the head cohanim and the Judean leaders informed him of the case against Sha’ul, and they asked him 3 to do them the favor of having the man sent to Yerushalayim. (They had plotted to have him ambushed and killed en route.) 4 Festus replied that Sha’ul was being kept under guard in Caesarea, and that he was about to go there shortly himself. 5 “So,” he said, “let competent men among you come down with me and press charges against the man, if he has done something wrong.”
6 After staying with them at most eight or ten days, Festus went down to Caesarea; and on the following day, he took his seat in court and ordered Sha’ul to be brought in. 7 When he arrived, the Judeans who had come down from Yerushalayim stood around him, bringing many serious charges against him which they could not prove. 8 In reply, Sha’ul said, “I have committed no offense — not against the Torah to which the Jews hold, not against the Temple, and not against the Emperor.”
9 But Festus, wanting to do the Judeans a favor, asked Sha’ul, “Would you be willing to go up to Yerushalayim and be tried before me there on these charges?” 10 Sha’ul replied, “I am standing right now in the court of the Emperor, and this is where I should be tried. I have done no wrong to the Judeans, as you very well know. 11 If I am a wrongdoer, if I have done something for which I deserve to die, then I am ready to die. But if there is nothing to these charges which they are bringing against me, no one can give me to them just to grant a favor! I appeal to the Emperor!” 12 Then Festus, after talking with his advisers, answered, “You have appealed to the Emperor; you will go to the Emperor!”
13 After some days, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus. 14 Since they were staying on there for some time, Festus had the opportunity to acquaint the king with Sha’ul’s situation. “There is a man here,” he said, “who was left behind in custody by Felix. 15 When I was in Yerushalayim, the head cohanim and the elders of the Judeans informed me about him and asked me to pronounce judgment against him. 16 My answer to them was that it is not the custom with Romans to give up an accused man just to grant a favor, before he has met his accusers face to face and had the opportunity to defend himself against the charge. 17 So when they arrived here with me, I did not delay, but took my seat in court the next day and ordered the man brought in.
18 “When the accusers stood up, instead of charging him with some serious crime as I had expected, 19 they disputed with him about certain points of their own religion, and particularly about somebody called Yeshua, who had died, but who Sha’ul claimed was alive. 20 Being at a loss as to how to investigate such questions, I asked him if he would be willing to go to Yerushalayim and be tried on these matters there. 21 But since Sha’ul appealed to be kept in custody and have his case decided by His Imperial Majesty, I ordered him held until I could send him to the Emperor.”
22 Agrippa said to Festus, “I myself have been wanting to hear the man.” “Tomorrow,” he replied, “You will hear him.”
23 So the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with much pageantry; they entered the audience room accompanied by military commanders and the prominent men of the city. Then, at the command of Festus, Sha’ul was brought in. 24 Festus said, “King Agrippa and all of you here with us, do you see this man? The whole Judean community has complained to me about him both in Yerushalayim and here, crying that he shouldn’t be allowed to remain alive. 25 But I discovered that he had done nothing that deserves a death sentence. Now when he himself appealed to the Emperor, I decided to send him. 26 However, I have nothing specific to write to His Majesty about him. This is why I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa — so that after we have examined him, I might have something to write. 27 It seems irrational to me to send a prisoner without also indicating what the charges against him are.”
