23 ατενισας δε παυλος τω συνεδριω ειπεν ανδρες αδελφοι εγω παση συνειδησει αγαθη πεπολιτευμαι τω θεω αχρι ταυτης της ημερας
2 ο δε αρχιερευς ανανιας επεταξεν τοις παρεστωσιν αυτω τυπτειν αυτου το στομα
3 τοτε ο παυλος προς αυτον ειπεν τυπτειν σε μελλει ο θεος τοιχε κεκονιαμενε και συ καθη κρινων με κατα τον νομον και παρανομων κελευεις με τυπτεσθαι
4 οι δε παρεστωτες ειπαν τον αρχιερεα του θεου λοιδορεις
5 εφη τε ο παυλος ουκ ηδειν αδελφοι οτι εστιν αρχιερευς γεγραπται γαρ οτι αρχοντα του λαου σου ουκ ερεις κακως
6 γνους δε ο παυλος οτι το εν μερος εστιν σαδδουκαιων το δε ετερον φαρισαιων εκραζεν εν τω συνεδριω ανδρες αδελφοι εγω φαρισαιος ειμι υιος φαρισαιων περι ελπιδος και αναστασεως νεκρων κρινομαι
7 τουτο δε αυτου λαλουντος εγενετο στασις των φαρισαιων και σαδδουκαιων και εσχισθη το πληθος
8 σαδδουκαιοι γαρ λεγουσιν μη ειναι αναστασιν μητε αγγελον μητε πνευμα φαρισαιοι δε ομολογουσιν τα αμφοτερα
9 εγενετο δε κραυγη μεγαλη και ανασταντες τινες των γραμματεων του μερους των φαρισαιων διεμαχοντο λεγοντες ουδεν κακον ευρισκομεν εν τω ανθρωπω τουτω ει δε πνευμα ελαλησεν αυτω η αγγελος
10 πολλης δε γινομενης στασεως φοβηθεις ο χιλιαρχος μη διασπασθη ο παυλος υπ αυτων εκελευσεν το στρατευμα καταβαν αρπασαι αυτον εκ μεσου αυτων αγειν εις την παρεμβολην
11 τη δε επιουση νυκτι επιστας αυτω ο κυριος ειπεν θαρσει ως γαρ διεμαρτυρω τα περι εμου εις ιερουσαλημ ουτως σε δει και εις ρωμην μαρτυρησαι
12 γενομενης δε ημερας ποιησαντες συστροφην οι ιουδαιοι ανεθεματισαν εαυτους λεγοντες μητε φαγειν μητε πιειν εως ου αποκτεινωσιν τον παυλον
13 ησαν δε πλειους τεσσερακοντα οι ταυτην την συνωμοσιαν ποιησαμενοι
14 οιτινες προσελθοντες τοις αρχιερευσιν και τοις πρεσβυτεροις ειπαν αναθεματι ανεθεματισαμεν εαυτους μηδενος γευσασθαι εως ου αποκτεινωμεν τον παυλον
15 νυν ουν υμεις εμφανισατε τω χιλιαρχω συν τω συνεδριω οπως καταγαγη αυτον εις υμας ως μελλοντας διαγινωσκειν ακριβεστερον τα περι αυτου ημεις δε προ του εγγισαι αυτον ετοιμοι εσμεν του ανελειν αυτον
16 ακουσας δε ο υιος της αδελφης παυλου την ενεδραν παραγενομενος και εισελθων εις την παρεμβολην απηγγειλεν τω παυλω
17 προσκαλεσαμενος δε ο παυλος ενα των εκατονταρχων εφη τον νεανιαν τουτον απαγε προς τον χιλιαρχον εχει γαρ απαγγειλαι τι αυτω
18 ο μεν ουν παραλαβων αυτον ηγαγεν προς τον χιλιαρχον και φησιν ο δεσμιος παυλος προσκαλεσαμενος με ηρωτησεν τουτον τον νεανιαν αγαγειν προς σε εχοντα τι λαλησαι σοι
19 επιλαβομενος δε της χειρος αυτου ο χιλιαρχος και αναχωρησας κατ ιδιαν επυνθανετο τι εστιν ο εχεις απαγγειλαι μοι
20 ειπεν δε οτι οι ιουδαιοι συνεθεντο του ερωτησαι σε οπως αυριον τον παυλον καταγαγης εις το συνεδριον ως μελλων τι ακριβεστερον πυνθανεσθαι περι αυτου
21 συ ουν μη πεισθης αυτοις ενεδρευουσιν γαρ αυτον εξ αυτων ανδρες πλειους τεσσερακοντα οιτινες ανεθεματισαν εαυτους μητε φαγειν μητε πιειν εως ου ανελωσιν αυτον και νυν εισιν ετοιμοι προσδεχομενοι την απο σου επαγγελιαν
22 ο μεν ουν χιλιαρχος απελυσεν τον νεανισκον παραγγειλας μηδενι εκλαλησαι οτι ταυτα ενεφανισας προς εμε
23 και προσκαλεσαμενος τινας δυο των εκατονταρχων ειπεν ετοιμασατε στρατιωτας διακοσιους οπως πορευθωσιν εως καισαρειας και ιππεις εβδομηκοντα και δεξιολαβους διακοσιους απο τριτης ωρας της νυκτος
24 κτηνη τε παραστησαι ινα επιβιβασαντες τον παυλον διασωσωσιν προς φηλικα τον ηγεμονα
25 γραψας επιστολην εχουσαν τον τυπον τουτον
26 κλαυδιος λυσιας τω κρατιστω ηγεμονι φηλικι χαιρειν
27 τον ανδρα τουτον συλλημφθεντα υπο των ιουδαιων και μελλοντα αναιρεισθαι υπ αυτων επιστας συν τω στρατευματι εξειλαμην μαθων οτι ρωμαιος εστιν
28 βουλομενος τε επιγνωναι την αιτιαν δι ην ενεκαλουν αυτω [κατηγαγον εις το συνεδριον αυτων]
29 ον ευρον εγκαλουμενον περι ζητηματων του νομου αυτων μηδεν δε αξιον θανατου η δεσμων εχοντα εγκλημα
30 μηνυθεισης δε μοι επιβουλης εις τον ανδρα εσεσθαι εξαυτης επεμψα προς σε παραγγειλας και τοις κατηγοροις λεγειν προς αυτον επι σου
31 οι μεν ουν στρατιωται κατα το διατεταγμενον αυτοις αναλαβοντες τον παυλον ηγαγον δια νυκτος εις την αντιπατριδα
32 τη δε επαυριον εασαντες τους ιππεις απερχεσθαι συν αυτω υπεστρεψαν εις την παρεμβολην
33 οιτινες εισελθοντες εις την καισαρειαν και αναδοντες την επιστολην τω ηγεμονι παρεστησαν και τον παυλον αυτω
34 αναγνους δε και επερωτησας εκ ποιας επαρχειας εστιν και πυθομενος οτι απο κιλικιας
35 διακουσομαι σου εφη οταν και οι κατηγοροι σου παραγενωνται κελευσας εν τω πραιτωριω του ηρωδου φυλασσεσθαι αυτον

23 Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin(A) and said, “My brothers,(B) I have fulfilled my duty to God in all good conscience(C) to this day.” 2 At this the high priest Ananias(D) ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.(E) 3 Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall!(F) You sit there to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck!”(G)
4 Those who were standing near Paul said, “How dare you insult God’s high priest!”
5 Paul replied, “Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: ‘Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’[a]”(H)
6 Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees(I) and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers,(J) I am a Pharisee,(K) descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.”(L) 7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection,(M) and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.)
9 There was a great uproar, and some of the teachers of the law who were Pharisees(N) stood up and argued vigorously. “We find nothing wrong with this man,”(O) they said. “What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”(P) 10 The dispute became so violent that the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them. He ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force and bring him into the barracks.(Q)
11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage!(R) As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”(S)
The Plot to Kill Paul
12 The next morning some Jews formed a conspiracy(T) and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.(U) 13 More than forty men were involved in this plot. 14 They went to the chief priests and the elders and said, “We have taken a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.(V) 15 Now then, you and the Sanhedrin(W) petition the commander to bring him before you on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about his case. We are ready to kill him before he gets here.”
16 But when the son of Paul’s sister heard of this plot, he went into the barracks(X) and told Paul.
17 Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him.” 18 So he took him to the commander.
The centurion said, “Paul, the prisoner,(Y) sent for me and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”
19 The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside and asked, “What is it you want to tell me?”
20 He said: “Some Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul before the Sanhedrin(Z) tomorrow on the pretext of wanting more accurate information about him.(AA) 21 Don’t give in to them, because more than forty(AB) of them are waiting in ambush for him. They have taken an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him.(AC) They are ready now, waiting for your consent to their request.”
22 The commander dismissed the young man with this warning: “Don’t tell anyone that you have reported this to me.”
Paul Transferred to Caesarea
23 Then he called two of his centurions and ordered them, “Get ready a detachment of two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen[b] to go to Caesarea(AD) at nine tonight.(AE) 24 Provide horses for Paul so that he may be taken safely to Governor Felix.”(AF)
25 He wrote a letter as follows:
26 Claudius Lysias,
To His Excellency,(AG) Governor Felix:
Greetings.(AH)
27 This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him,(AI) but I came with my troops and rescued him,(AJ) for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen.(AK) 28 I wanted to know why they were accusing him, so I brought him to their Sanhedrin.(AL) 29 I found that the accusation had to do with questions about their law,(AM) but there was no charge against him(AN) that deserved death or imprisonment. 30 When I was informed(AO) of a plot(AP) to be carried out against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also ordered his accusers(AQ) to present to you their case against him.
31 So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul with them during the night and brought him as far as Antipatris. 32 The next day they let the cavalry(AR) go on with him, while they returned to the barracks.(AS) 33 When the cavalry(AT) arrived in Caesarea,(AU) they delivered the letter to the governor(AV) and handed Paul over to him. 34 The governor read the letter and asked what province he was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia,(AW) 35 he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers(AX) get here.” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard(AY) in Herod’s palace.

— Meus irmãos, tenho vivido até hoje com a consciência limpa diante de Deus.
2 Mas Ananias, o Grande Sacerdote, mandou que os homens que estavam perto de Paulo dessem um tapa na boca dele. 3 Aí Paulo disse a Ananias:
— Hipócrita, Deus o castigará por isso! Você está sentado aí para me julgar de acordo com a Lei, não é? Então como é que mandou bater em mim? Isso é contra a Lei!
4 Os homens que estavam perto de Paulo perguntaram:
— Você está insultando o Grande Sacerdote, o servo de Deus?
5 Paulo respondeu:
— Meus irmãos, eu não sabia que ele é o Grande Sacerdote. Pois as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: “Não fale mal de nenhuma das autoridades do seu povo.”
6 Quando Paulo percebeu que alguns do Conselho eram do partido dos saduceus e outros do partido dos fariseus, disse bem alto:
— Meus irmãos, eu sou fariseu e filho de fariseus. Estou aqui sendo julgado porque creio que os mortos vão ressuscitar.
7 Assim que ele disse isso, os fariseus e os saduceus começaram a discutir, e o Conselho se dividiu. 8 É que os saduceus não creem que os mortos vão ressuscitar, nem que existem anjos ou espíritos; mas os fariseus creem nessas coisas. 9 E assim a gritaria aumentou ainda mais. Então alguns mestres da Lei que pertenciam ao partido dos fariseus se levantaram e protestaram. Eles disseram:
— Não vemos nenhum mal neste homem. Pode ser mesmo que um anjo ou um espírito tenha falado com ele.
10 A briga chegou a tal ponto, que o comandante ficou com medo de que Paulo fosse despedaçado por eles. Por isso mandou os guardas descerem para tirar Paulo do meio deles e o levar de volta para a fortaleza.
11 Na noite seguinte o Senhor Jesus apareceu a Paulo e disse:
— Tenha coragem, Paulo! Você falou a meu respeito aqui em Jerusalém e vai falar também em Roma.
O plano para matar Paulo
12 Na manhã seguinte alguns judeus se ajuntaram e juraram que não iam comer nem beber nada enquanto não matassem Paulo. 13 Os homens que combinaram fazer isso eram mais de quarenta. 14 Eles foram falar com os chefes dos sacerdotes e com os líderes do povo e disseram:
— Nós fizemos o seguinte juramento: “Que Deus nos amaldiçoe se comermos ou bebermos qualquer coisa enquanto não matarmos Paulo.” 15 Agora vocês e o Conselho Superior, mandem pedir ao comandante que traga Paulo aqui. Digam que estão querendo examinar melhor o caso dele. Então, antes que ele chegue, nós estaremos prontos para matá-lo.
16 Mas o filho da irmã de Paulo ficou sabendo do plano; ele entrou na fortaleza e contou tudo a Paulo. 17 Então Paulo chamou um dos oficiais e disse:
— Leve este moço ao comandante. Ele tem uma coisa para contar a ele.
18 O oficial levou o moço ao comandante e disse:
— Aquele preso que se chama Paulo mandou me chamar e pediu que eu trouxesse este moço porque ele tem uma informação para o senhor.
19 O comandante pegou o moço pela mão, levou-o para um lado e perguntou:
— O que é que você tem para me contar?
20 Ele respondeu:
— Alguns judeus combinaram pedir ao senhor que leve Paulo amanhã ao Conselho Superior, com a desculpa de quererem examinar melhor o caso dele. 21 Mas não acredite nisso, pois mais de quarenta deles vão ficar escondidos esperando Paulo para o matar. Todos eles fizeram este juramento: “Que Deus nos amaldiçoe se comermos ou bebermos qualquer coisa antes de termos matado Paulo.” Eles estão prontos para cumprir o juramento e esperam apenas saber o que o senhor vai resolver.
22 Então o comandante respondeu:
— Não diga a ninguém que você me contou isso.
E mandou que o moço fosse embora.
Paulo é mandado para o governador Félix
23 Então o comandante chamou dois oficiais e disse:
— Arranjem duzentos soldados, e mais setenta cavaleiros, e duzentos lanceiros para ir até a cidade de Cesareia. Estejam prontos para sair daqui às nove horas da noite. 24 Preparem também cavalos para Paulo montar e o levem com toda a segurança para o governador Félix.
25 Depois o comandante escreveu uma carta que dizia o seguinte:
26 “Excelentíssimo Governador Félix,
“Saudações.
27 “Alguns judeus agarraram este homem e quase o mataram. Quando soube que ele era cidadão romano, eu fui com os meus soldados e não deixei que ele fosse morto. 28 Eu queria saber por que o estavam acusando e por isso resolvi levá-lo diante do Conselho Superior dos judeus. 29 Então descobri que ele não tinha feito nada para merecer a prisão ou a morte. A acusação contra ele era a respeito da própria lei deles. 30 Quando fui informado de que havia um plano para matá-lo, resolvi mandá-lo ao senhor. E disse para aqueles judeus que fizessem as acusações na sua presença.
“Saúde.
“Cláudio Lísias.”
31 Então os soldados cumpriram as ordens. Pegaram Paulo e o levaram durante a noite até a cidade de Antipátride. 32 No dia seguinte os soldados voltaram para a fortaleza, deixando que os cavaleiros continuassem a viagem com Paulo. 33 Eles o levaram para a cidade de Cesareia, deram a carta ao Governador e lhe entregaram Paulo. 34 O Governador leu a carta e perguntou a Paulo de onde ele era. Quando soube que era da região da Cilícia, 35 disse:
— Quando os seus acusadores chegarem, eu ouvirei o que você tem para dizer.
Em seguida mandou que ele ficasse preso no palácio do Governador.

23 And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?
4 And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?
5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
9 And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
10 And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
11 And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
12 And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
13 And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.
14 And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
15 Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.
16 And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.
17 Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.
18 So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.
19 Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?
20 And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.
21 But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
22 So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
23 And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;
24 And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.
25 And he wrote a letter after this manner:
26 Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.
27 This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
28 And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:
29 Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
30 And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.
31 Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:
33 Who, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.
34 And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;
35 I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
