17 保罗和西拉经过暗非坡里和亚波罗尼亚，到了帖撒罗尼迦。那里有犹太人的会堂。 2 保罗照以往的习惯进入会堂，一连三个安息日引用圣经与当地人讨论， 3 解释、证明基督必须受害，然后从死里复活，又说：“我向你们宣讲的这位耶稣就是基督。” 4 不少人被说服，成为保罗和西拉的同道，其中有许多是敬畏上帝的希腊人和有地位的妇女。
5 那些不信主的犹太人却妒火中烧，他们召集了一群市井无赖，在城里引发骚乱，闯进耶孙的家企图把保罗和西拉揪出来示众。 6 他们找不到保罗和西拉，就把耶孙和几个弟兄拉到当地官员面前，高喊：“那些搅乱天下的人到我们这里来了， 7 耶孙接待了他们。他们违抗凯撒的命令，说另有一个王叫耶稣。” 8 百姓和当地官长听后，深感不安。 9 于是，官长命耶孙等人缴纳保释金，然后释放了他们。
庇哩亚人接受福音
10 弟兄姊妹在夜间把保罗和西拉送往庇哩亚。他们二人一到，就进了犹太会堂。 11 当地的人比帖撒罗尼迦人通情达理，非常乐意接受真道，还天天查考圣经，研究这道是否正确。 12 结果有很多人信了，包括不少有名望的希腊妇女和男子。 13 可是，帖撒罗尼迦的犹太人听到保罗在庇哩亚宣扬上帝的道，就赶来怂恿、煽动众人。 14 庇哩亚的弟兄姊妹立刻送保罗到海边，西拉和提摩太仍然留在庇哩亚。 15 护送保罗的人一直把他送到雅典，然后带着保罗的口信回庇哩亚，交代西拉和提摩太尽快赶去雅典与保罗会合。

16 保罗在雅典等候他们的时候，看见满城都是偶像，心里非常着急。 17 于是，他在会堂跟犹太人和虔诚的外族人辩论，每天在广场上跟遇见的人辩论。 18 还有一些伊壁鸠鲁和斯多亚学派的哲学家和保罗争论，有人嘲笑他说：“这人在胡说八道些什么呀？”还有人说：“他好像在宣扬外国的神明。”他们这样说是因为保罗在传讲耶稣和祂复活的福音。 19 他们带保罗到一个称为亚略·巴古的论坛，问他：“我们可以知道你所教导的这个新道理吗？ 20 你的言论确实稀奇，我们很想知道个究竟。”
21 这些雅典人和侨居在那里的人没有别的嗜好，只喜欢谈论和打听一些新奇的事。
22 保罗在亚略·巴古论坛中站起来说：“各位雅典人，我看得出你们在各方面都非常虔诚。 23 我在街上走的时候，观察了你们所敬拜的对象，发现一座祭坛上面写着‘献给未知之神’。这位你们不认识却在敬拜的神明，我现在介绍给你们。
24 “这位创造宇宙万物的上帝是天地的主宰，并不住在人手建造的庙宇里， 25 也不需要人的侍奉，因为祂一无所缺。祂将生命、气息和万物赐给世人。 26 祂从一人造出万族，让他们散居世界各地，又预先定下他们的期限和居住的疆界， 27 以便他们在其间寻求祂，或许他们可以摸索着找到祂。祂原本就离我们各人不远， 28 我们的生活、行动和存在都靠祂，你们的诗人也说过，‘我们是祂的子孙。’ 29 我们既然是上帝的子孙，就不该认为上帝是人凭手艺和想象用金、银、石头所雕刻的样子。
30 “上帝以往不鉴察世人的无知，现在则命令世上所有的人都要悔改。 31 因为祂已经定了日子，要借祂所设立的人按公义审判这个世界。祂叫那人从死里复活，给了全人类可信的凭据。”
32 听见保罗提到死人复活的事，有些人就嘲笑他，还有些人说：“我们改天再听你讲这个。” 33 于是保罗离开了他们。 34 不过，也有人跟随保罗，信了耶稣，其中有亚略·巴古的会员丢尼修和一位名叫戴玛丽的妇人及其他人。

Paul in Thessalonica
17 Now when they had traveled through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (A)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And (B)according to Paul’s custom, he [a]visited them, and for three (C)Sabbaths reasoned with them from (D)the Scriptures, 3 [b]explaining and [c]giving evidence that the [d]Christ (E)had to suffer and (F)rise from the dead, and saying, “(G)This Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you is the [e]Christ.” 4 (H)And some of them were persuaded and joined (I)Paul and Silas, [f]along with a large number of the (J)God-fearing (K)Greeks and [g]a significant number of the (L)leading women. 5 But (M)the Jews, becoming jealous and taking along some wicked men from the marketplace, formed a mob and set the city in an uproar; and they attacked the house of (N)Jason and were seeking to bring them out to the people. 6 When they did not find them, they began (O)dragging Jason and some brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have upset [h](P)the world have come here also; 7 [i]and Jason (Q)has welcomed them, and they all act (R)contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” 8 They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. 9 And when they had received a [j]pledge from (S)Jason and the others, they released them.
Paul in Berea
10 (T)The brothers immediately sent (U)Paul and Silas away by night to (V)Berea, [k]and when they arrived, they went into (W)the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these people were more noble-minded than those in (X)Thessalonica, [l]for they received the word with [m]great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. 12 Therefore, (Y)many of them believed, [n]along with a significant number of (Z)prominent Greek (AA)women and men. 13 But when the Jews of (AB)Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in (AC)Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then immediately (AD)the brothers sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and (AE)Silas and (AF)Timothy remained there. 15 Now (AG)those who escorted Paul brought him as far as (AH)Athens; and receiving a command for (AI)Silas and Timothy to (AJ)come to him as soon as possible, they left.

16 Now while Paul was waiting for them in (AK)Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he observed that the city was full of idols. 17 So he was reasoning (AL)in the synagogue with the Jews and (AM)the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be present. 18 And some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers as well were [o]conversing with him. Some were saying, “What could (AN)this [p]scavenger of tidbits want to say?” Others, “He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,”—because he was preaching (AO)Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they (AP)took him and brought him [q]to the [r](AQ)Areopagus, saying, “May we know what (AR)this new teaching is [s]which you are proclaiming? 20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears; so we want to know what these things mean.” 21 (Now all the Athenians and the strangers (AS)visiting there used to spend their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new.)

22 So Paul stood in the midst of the [t]Areopagus and said, “Men of (AT)Athens, I see that you are very (AU)religious in all respects. 23 For while I was passing through and examining the (AV)objects of your worship, I also found an altar with this inscription, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.’ Therefore, what (AW)you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 (AX)The God who made the world and everything that is in it, since He is (AY)Lord of heaven and earth, does not (AZ)dwell in temples made by hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, (BA)as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things; 26 and (BB)He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having (BC)determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, 27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might feel around for Him and find Him, (BD)though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for (BE)in Him we live and move and [u]exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His descendants.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the descendants of God, we (BF)ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by human skill and thought. 30 So having (BG)overlooked (BH)the times of ignorance, God is (BI)now proclaiming to mankind that all people everywhere are to repent, 31 because He has set (BJ)a day on which (BK)He will judge [v](BL)the world in righteousness [w]through a Man whom He has (BM)appointed, having furnished proof to all people [x]by (BN)raising Him from the dead.”
32 Now when they heard of (BO)the resurrection of the dead, some began to scoff, but others said, “We shall hear from you [y]again concerning this.” 33 So Paul went out from among them. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the (BP)Areopagite and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

En Tesalónica
17 Atravesando Anfípolis y Apolonia, Pablo y Silas llegaron a Tesalónica, donde había una sinagoga de los judíos. 2 Como era su costumbre, Pablo entró en la sinagoga y tres sábados seguidos discutió con ellos. Basándose en las Escrituras, 3 explicaba y demostraba que era necesario que el Cristo padeciera y resucitara. Decía: «Este Jesús que les anuncio es el Cristo». 4 Algunos de los judíos se convencieron y se unieron a Pablo y a Silas, como también lo hicieron un buen número de mujeres prominentes y muchos que no eran judíos y adoraban a Dios.
5 Pero los judíos, llenos de envidia, reclutaron a unos maleantes callejeros, con los que armaron una turba y empezaron a alborotar la ciudad. Asaltaron la casa de Jasón en busca de Pablo y Silas, con el fin de procesarlos públicamente. 6 Pero como no los encontraron, arrastraron a Jasón y a algunos otros hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, gritando: «¡Estos que han trastornado el mundo entero han venido también acá 7 y Jasón los ha recibido en su casa! Todos ellos actúan en contra de los decretos del césar, afirmando que hay otro rey, uno que se llama Jesús». 8 Al oír esto, la multitud y las autoridades de la ciudad se alborotaron; 9 entonces estas exigieron fianza a Jasón y a los demás para dejarlos en libertad.
En Berea
10 Tan pronto como se hizo de noche, los hermanos enviaron a Pablo y a Silas a Berea, quienes al llegar se dirigieron a la sinagoga de los judíos. 11 Estos eran de sentimientos más nobles que los de Tesalónica, de modo que estuvieron muy dispuestos a recibir el mensaje y todos los días examinaban las Escrituras para ver si era verdad lo que se les anunciaba. 12 Muchos de los judíos creyeron, y también un buen número de no judíos, incluso mujeres distinguidas y no pocos hombres.
13 Cuando los judíos de Tesalónica se enteraron de que también en Berea estaba Pablo predicando la palabra de Dios, fueron allá para agitar y alborotar a las multitudes. 14 Enseguida los hermanos enviaron a Pablo hasta la costa, pero Silas y Timoteo se quedaron en Berea. 15 Los que acompañaban a Pablo lo llevaron hasta Atenas. Luego regresaron con instrucciones de que Silas y Timoteo se reunieran con él tan pronto como les fuera posible.
En Atenas
16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas, le dolió en el alma ver que la ciudad estaba llena de ídolos. 17 Así que discutía en la sinagoga con los judíos y con los no judíos que adoraban a Dios, y a diario hablaba en la plaza con los que se encontraban por allí. 18 Algunos filósofos epicúreos y estoicos entablaron conversación con él. Unos decían: «¿Qué querrá decir este charlatán?». Otros comentaban: «Parece que es predicador de dioses extranjeros». Decían esto porque Pablo anunciaba las buenas noticias de Jesús y de la resurrección. 19 Entonces lo sujetaron y llevaron a una reunión del Areópago.
—¿Se puede saber qué nueva enseñanza es esta que usted presenta? —preguntaron—. 20 Porque nos presenta usted ideas que nos suenan extrañas, y queremos saber qué significan.
21 Es que todos los atenienses y los extranjeros que vivían allí se pasaban el tiempo sin hacer otra cosa más que escuchar y comentar las últimas novedades.
22 Pablo se puso en medio del Areópago y tomó la palabra:
—¡Ciudadanos atenienses! Observo que ustedes son sumamente religiosos en todo lo que hacen. 23 Al pasar y fijarme en sus lugares sagrados, encontré incluso un altar con esta inscripción:
a un dios desconocido.
Pues bien, eso que ustedes adoran como algo desconocido es lo que yo les anuncio.
24 »El Dios que hizo el mundo y todo lo que hay en él es Señor del cielo y de la tierra. No vive en templos construidos por hombres, 25 ni se deja servir por manos humanas, como si necesitara de algo. Por el contrario, él es quien da a todos la vida, el aliento y todas las cosas. 26 De un solo hombre hizo todas las naciones[a] para que habitaran toda la tierra; y determinó los períodos de su historia y las fronteras de sus territorios. 27 Esto lo hizo Dios para que todos lo busquen y, aunque sea a tientas, lo encuentren. En verdad, él no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros, 28 “puesto que en él vivimos, nos movemos y existimos”. Como algunos de sus propios poetas han dicho: “De él somos descendientes”.
29 »Por tanto, siendo descendientes de Dios, no debemos pensar que la divinidad sea como el oro, la plata o la piedra: escultura hecha como resultado del ingenio y de la destreza del ser humano. 30 Pues bien, Dios pasó por alto aquellos tiempos de tal ignorancia, pero ahora manda a todos, en todas partes, que se arrepientan. 31 Él ha fijado un día en que juzgará al mundo con justicia, por medio del hombre que ha designado. De ello ha dado pruebas a todos al levantarlo de entre los muertos.
32 Cuando oyeron de la resurrección, unos se burlaron, pero otros dijeron:
—Queremos que usted nos hable en otra ocasión sobre este tema.
33 En ese momento Pablo salió de la reunión. 34 Algunas personas se unieron a Pablo y creyeron. Entre ellos estaba Dionisio, miembro del Areópago, una mujer llamada Dámaris y otros más.
