アナニヤとサッピラ
5 そこに、アナニヤという男がいた。彼の妻の名前はサッピラ。アナニヤは自分が所有していたいくつかの土地を売った。 2 だが、彼は使徒たちに一部のお金だけを渡し、こっそり一部を自分のために取っておいたのだ。彼の妻もまたこのことを知っていたが、彼の行為に同意していた。
3 ペテロは言った。「アナニヤ、なんでお前は悪魔に身を委ね、そんな考えを持ってしまったんだ？お前は一部のお金を自分のために残し、聖霊に対して嘘をついた。 4 お前が土地を売る前、その土地はお前の所有物だった。そして、たとえ土地を売った後でも、確かにそのお金は好きなように使って良い。だが、何故そんなふうに考えてしまったのだ？お前は俺たちに嘘をついたのではない。神に嘘をついたのだぞ！」
5-6 これを聞いたアナニヤは、その場に倒れこみ死んでしまった。こうして、数人の若者が彼の遺体を包むと、それを担いで墓に埋めた。この出来事を聞いた誰もが恐怖で震え上がった。
7 それから約3時間後・・・死んだアナニヤの妻がその場所に入ってきた。妻のサッピラはその時点ではまだ夫に何が起こったのかを知らなかった。 8 ペテロが彼女に言った。「サッピラ、あなたが売った土地はいくらだったんだ？このぐらいか？」
サッピラは答えた。「はい！土地の代金はこれで全部です！」
9 ペテロは彼女に言った。「なんで、あなたの旦那も、そしてあなたも、聖霊を試すことに同意するのか？耳をすませてみろ。あの足音が聞こえるか？あなたの夫を埋葬した人たちがドアにいる。彼らは同じようにあなたを運び出すだろう」 10 その瞬間、サッピラはペテロの足元に倒れ込み、死んでしまった。そこに入ってきた若者たちは、そこで死んでいる女性を見つけた。彼らは彼女を運び出し、夫のそばに埋葬した。 11 そしてこの出来事を聞いた教会全体は、恐怖でいっぱいになった。
神からの証明
12 使徒たちには人々の間で多くの奇跡を起こす力を与えられていた。そして、信じる仲間たちは1つの目的を胸に、エルサレム神殿・ソロモンの廊下に集まっていた。 13 他の誰も使徒に加わろうとはしなかったが、みんな彼らについて素晴らしいことを言っていた。 14 王である神を信じる人がますます増え、男性も女性もその信じる仲間たちのグループに加わっていった。 15 人々は病を抱えている人を道に連れて来て、小さなベッドやマットの上に彼らを置いた。通りかかるペテロの影にだけでも彼らが触れれば、癒されるのではと期待していたのだ。 16 人々はエルサレム周辺の全ての町から集まって来た。悪霊に困ってる人や、病気を持っている人が連れてこられると、彼らはその場で全員、癒された。
使徒が逮捕された
17 サドカイ派と呼ばれる大祭司と彼らに忠実な彼らの弟子たちのグループは、強い嫉妬心を抱いていた。 18 彼らはペテロなどの使徒たちを掴んで、街の牢屋に入れたのだ。 19 しかし、夜の間に神の天使が牢屋の扉を開けると、天使は使徒たちを外に連れ出してこう言った。 20 「さぁ、行って！そして神殿の敷地内に立ちなさい。全ての人にこの新しい人生について伝えるのです」 21 使徒たちはこれを聞いて、言われた通りにした。彼らは夜明けとともに神殿の敷地内に入り、人々に教え始めた。
大祭司とその弟子たちは集まり、ユダヤ人の長老たちを最高審議会にもう一度招集させた。彼らは捕まえた使徒たちを連れて来させるために、何人かの男たちを牢屋に向かわせた。 22 男たちが牢屋の前に着くと、そこには誰もおらず、使徒たちの姿がなかった。彼らは指導者たちに報告した。 23 彼らはこう言った。「も、申し上げます。牢屋は閉まっていて、鍵がかけられていました。警護の者たちも扉の前に立っていました。で、ですが、私たちが扉を開けると、牢屋の中は空っぽで・・・」 24 神殿警察の隊長と祭司長はこれを聞くと困惑し、何を言っているのか意味が分からなかった。
25 それから別の男性が来て、こう言った。「報告です！昨日牢屋に入れた者たちがたった今、神殿の敷地で人々に教えております」 26 神殿警察は隊長と一緒に出て行くと、使徒たちを連れ戻して来た。しかし、彼らはそこに集まっていた人々を恐れたので、強硬手段は取らなかった。人々から石を投げられて、殺されるんじゃないかと恐れていたのだ。
27 彼らは使徒たちを連行すると、審議会の前に彼らを立たせた。大祭司は彼らに質問した。 28 「あの名前を使って、もう二度と教えてはならないと伝えたはずだ！だが、お前たちがしたことを見てみろ！お前たちはエルサレム中に教えを広め、そしてあの男の死を我々のせいにしようとしている」
29 ペテロと他の使徒たちは答えた。「私たちは神に従うべきで、あなた方ではありません！ 30 あなた方はイエスを十字架にかけて殺しました。ですが、先祖と同じ神がイエスを死から復活させました。 31 神が自分の右の座を与えることで、イエスは名誉を受けられたのです。神はイエスを私たちの指導者に、また私たちの救い主とされました。神がこうしたのは、イスラエルの全ての国民にチャンスを与えるためです。それは神に立ち返って、変わり、自分たちの過ちを赦してもらうためです！ 32 私たちはこれが全て起きるのを見ました。これが本当だということも断言できます。また聖霊が真実だと示しています。神は彼に従う全ての人に、この霊をお与えになったのです！」
33 その言葉を聞いた審議会の人たちは、ものすごい怒りを抱いた。こうして、彼らは使徒たちを殺すための方法を練り始めたのだ。 34 しかし、審議会の1人であるガマリエルというパリサイ派の人が立ち上がった。彼は掟の学者であり、全ての人から尊敬されていた。彼は男たちに使徒たちを数分間、部屋から出すようにと言った。 35 それから彼らに言った。「イスラエルのみなさん、あなた方が彼らに何をしようとしているか、もっと注意を払いなさい。 36 チウダという男が現れたのを覚えているだろう。彼は自分を重要な人物だと言い、約400人が彼に加わった。だが、やつは殺されて、彼に従う者たちは散って逃げ去ってしまった。彼らは何もすることができなかったのだ。 37 その後、住民登録の時期に、ユダという男がガリラヤからやって来た。多くの人が彼のグループに加わったが、彼もまた殺され、従う者たちは散っていった。 38 だから今、あなた達に伝えておこう。彼らには関わらず、放っておけばよい。もしやつらの計画が自分たちで考えついたものなら、それは失敗に終わる。 39 だが、もし彼らの行いが神からであるならば、彼らを止めることはできん。そうなれば、あなた達は、神を相手に戦うことになるのかもしれんぞ！」
指導者たちはガマリエルが言ったことに賛同した。 40 彼らはもう一度使徒たちを呼び入れると、使徒たちを鞭打ちの刑にして、イエスの名を使って教える事が二度とないようにと伝えると、彼らをそのまま釈放した。 41 使徒たちは審議会から去っていった。イエスのために名誉ある苦しみを受け、恥さらしにされたので彼らはとても嬉しかった。 42 使徒たちは教えることをやめなかった。イエスが救い主であると伝え、最高な知らせを伝え続けたのだ。彼らは毎日、これを神殿の敷地内や人々の家で教え続けていった。

Ananias and Sapphira
5 But there was a man named Ananias, who with his wife Sapphira sold some property that belonged to them. 2 But with his wife's agreement he kept part of the money for himself and turned the rest over to the apostles. 3 Peter said to him, “Ananias, why did you let Satan take control of you and make you lie to the Holy Spirit by keeping part of the money you received for the property? 4 Before you sold the property, it belonged to you; and after you sold it, the money was yours. Why, then, did you decide to do such a thing? You have not lied to people—you have lied to God!” 5 (A)As soon as Ananias heard this, he fell down dead; and all who heard about it were terrified. 6 The young men came in, wrapped up his body, carried him out, and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, was this the full amount you and your husband received for your property?”
“Yes,” she answered, “the full amount.”
9 So Peter said to her, “Why did you and your husband decide to put the Lord's Spirit to the test? The men who buried your husband are at the door right now, and they will carry you out too!” 10 At once she fell down at his feet and died. The young men came in and saw that she was dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 The whole church and all the others who heard of this were terrified.
Miracles and Wonders
12 Many miracles and wonders were being performed among the people by the apostles. All the believers met together in Solomon's Porch. 13 Nobody outside the group dared join them, even though the people spoke highly of them. 14 But more and more people were added to the group—a crowd of men and women who believed in the Lord. 15 As a result of what the apostles were doing, sick people were carried out into the streets and placed on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. 16 And crowds of people came in from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing those who were sick or who had evil spirits in them; and they were all healed.
The Apostles Are Persecuted
17 Then the High Priest and all his companions, members of the local party of the Sadducees, became extremely jealous of the apostles; so they decided to take action. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But that night an angel of the Lord opened the prison gates, led the apostles out, and said to them, 20 “Go and stand in the Temple, and tell the people all about this new life.” 21 The apostles obeyed, and at dawn they entered the Temple and started teaching.
The High Priest and his companions called together all the Jewish elders for a full meeting of the Council; then they sent orders to the prison to have the apostles brought before them. 22 But when the officials arrived, they did not find the apostles in prison, so they returned to the Council and reported, 23 “When we arrived at the jail, we found it locked up tight and all the guards on watch at the gates; but when we opened the gates, we found no one inside!” 24 When the chief priests and the officer in charge of the Temple guards heard this, they wondered what had happened to the apostles. 25 Then a man came in and said to them, “Listen! The men you put in prison are in the Temple teaching the people!” 26 So the officer went off with his men and brought the apostles back. They did not use force, however, because they were afraid that the people might stone them.
27 They brought the apostles in, made them stand before the Council, and the High Priest questioned them. 28 (B)“We gave you strict orders not to teach in the name of this man,” he said; “but see what you have done! You have spread your teaching all over Jerusalem, and you want to make us responsible for his death!”
29 Peter and the other apostles answered, “We must obey God, not men. 30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from death, after you had killed him by nailing him to a cross. 31 God raised him to his right side as Leader and Savior, to give the people of Israel the opportunity to repent and have their sins forgiven. 32 We are witnesses to these things—we and the Holy Spirit, who is God's gift to those who obey him.”
33 When the members of the Council heard this, they were so furious that they wanted to have the apostles put to death. 34 But one of them, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, who was a teacher of the Law and was highly respected by all the people, stood up in the Council. He ordered the apostles to be taken out for a while, 35 and then he said to the Council, “Fellow Israelites, be careful what you do to these men. 36 You remember that Theudas appeared some time ago, claiming to be somebody great, and about four hundred men joined him. But he was killed, all his followers were scattered, and his movement died out. 37 After that, Judas the Galilean appeared during the time of the census; he drew a crowd after him, but he also was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 And so in this case, I tell you, do not take any action against these men. Leave them alone! If what they have planned and done is of human origin, it will disappear, 39 (C)but if it comes from God, you cannot possibly defeat them. You could find yourselves fighting against God!”
The Council followed Gamaliel's advice. 40 They called the apostles in, had them whipped, and ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus; and then they set them free. 41 As the apostles left the Council, they were happy, because God had considered them worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of Jesus. 42 And every day in the Temple and in people's homes they continued to teach and preach the Good News about Jesus the Messiah.

Ananias and Sapphira
5 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. 2 With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself,(A) but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.(B)
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan(C) has so filled your heart(D) that you have lied to the Holy Spirit(E) and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?(F) 4 Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal?(G) What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”(H)
5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.(I) And great fear(J) seized all who heard what had happened. 6 Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body,(K) and carried him out and buried him.
7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 Peter asked her, “Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?”
“Yes,” she said, “that is the price.”(L)
9 Peter said to her, “How could you conspire to test the Spirit of the Lord?(M) Listen! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died.(N) Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.(O) 11 Great fear(P) seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.
The Apostles Heal Many
12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders(Q) among the people. And all the believers used to meet together(R) in Solomon’s Colonnade.(S) 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.(T) 14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.(U) 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.(V) 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.(W)
The Apostles Persecuted
17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party(X) of the Sadducees,(Y) were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.(Z) 19 But during the night an angel(AA) of the Lord opened the doors of the jail(AB) and brought them out.(AC) 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life.”(AD)
21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people.
When the high priest and his associates(AE) arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin(AF)—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles. 22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there.(AG) So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests(AH) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.
25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people(AI) would stone them.
27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin(AJ) to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”(AK) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”(AL)
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!(AM) 30 The God of our ancestors(AN) raised Jesus from the dead(AO)—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.(AP) 31 God exalted him to his own right hand(AQ) as Prince and Savior(AR) that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.(AS) 32 We are witnesses of these things,(AT) and so is the Holy Spirit,(AU) whom God has given to those who obey him.”
33 When they heard this, they were furious(AV) and wanted to put them to death. 34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel,(AW) a teacher of the law,(AX) who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census(AY) and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.(AZ) 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”(BA)
40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.(BB) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing(BC) because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.(BD) 42 Day after day, in the temple courts(BE) and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news(BF) that Jesus is the Messiah.(BG)

5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,
20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
22 But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,
23 Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.
24 Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
25 Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.
27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
28 Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
29 Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
33 When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
34 Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
35 And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
39 But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
