7 大祭司はステパノに、「この訴えのとおりか」と問いただしました。
2 ステパノは、答弁を始めました。「お聞きください、皆さん。先祖アブラハムがまだメソポタミヤに住んでいたころ、栄光に輝く神様が彼に現れました。 3 そして、故郷を離れ、親族とも別れて、神様の命じる国へ行くように、とおっしゃいました。 4 そこでアブラハムはカルデヤ人の地を離れ、シリヤのハランに移り、父親が死ぬまでそこに住みました。そのあと神様は、彼をこの地に連れて来られたのです。 5 ところがそこには、彼の土地はたったの一坪もなく、その上、子どももいませんでした。にもかかわらず、神様は、やがてこの地が全部、アブラハムとその子孫のものになると約束されたのです。 6 同時に、子孫たちがこの地を去って外国に住み、四百年のあいだ奴隷になるとも言われました。 7 ただ、『わたしは、彼らを奴隷とした国民を必ず罰する。その後、あなたの子孫はこの地に戻り、ここでわたしを礼拝するようになる』（創世15・13-14）との約束を添えて……。
8 神様はまた、その時、割礼の儀式（男子が生まれて八日目に、その性器の包皮を切り取る儀式）を定め、それを神とアブラハムの子孫との契約の証拠となさいました。それで、アブラハムの息子イサクは、生後八日目に割礼を受けたのです。このイサクの息子がヤコブで、ヤコブからユダヤ民族の十二部族の長が生まれました。 9 その一人ヨセフは、ほかの兄弟たちのねたみを買い、エジプトに奴隷として売られました。しかし神様は、ヨセフと共にいて、 10 あらゆる苦境から彼を救い出し、エジプトの王パロの前で彼に恵みを与えられたのです。神様がヨセフにすばらしい知恵を与えたので、パロはヨセフを、エジプト全土を治める大臣に取り立て、宮中の管理もいっさい任せました。
11 やがてエジプトとカナンの全土に大ききんが起こり、先祖たちは、たいへんな苦境に陥りました。食料がなくなったのです。 12 話に聞くと、エジプトにはまだ穀物があるそうです。ヤコブはさっそく息子たちを差し向けて、食料を買わせました。 13 彼らが二度目に買いに来た時、ヨセフは自分のことを兄弟たちに打ち明け、パロもヨセフの家族のことを知りました。それで、 14 ヨセフは人を遣わして、父ヤコブと兄弟たちの一族、総勢七十五人をエジプトに招きました。 15 こうして、ヤコブと息子たちはエジプトに住み、そこで死にました。 16 遺体はみなシケムに持ち帰られ、アブラハムがシケムのハモルの子から買った墓地に葬られました。
17 神様がアブラハムに立てた、彼の子孫を奴隷から解放するという約束の時が近づくにつれ、ユダヤ人の人口は、エジプトでどんどんふくれ上がっていきました。 18 そのうち、ヨセフのことを知らない王が即位し、 19 ユダヤ人に悪巧みをはかり、親たちに子どもを捨てさせたのです。
20 モーセが生まれたのは、ちょうどこのような時でした。彼は神の目にかなった、かわいらしい子どもでした。両親は、三か月の間、家の中に隠しておきましたが、 21 とうとう隠しきれなくなり、しかたなく捨てることにしました。ところが、エジプト王パロの娘がその子を見つけ、養子として育てることになったのです。 22 こうして、モーセはエジプトの最高の教育を受け、たくましく、雄弁な王子に成長しました。
23 四十歳の誕生日が近づいたある日、モーセは、同胞のイスラエル人のところへ行ってみよう、と思い立ちました。 24 ところが、行ってみると、どうでしょう。一人のエジプト人が、イスラエル人を虐待しているではありませんか。モーセはイスラエル人をかばおうとの一心から、相手のエジプト人を殺してしまいました。 25 モーセは、イスラエル人を助けるために神が自分を遣わされていることを、みなが認めてくれるものと思い込んでいましたが、現実はそうではありませんでした。
26 翌日、もう一度出かけて行くと、今度はイスラエル人同士で争っているのにぶつかりました。モーセは間に割って入り、『兄弟同士じゃないか。けんかなんかやめなさい』と押しとどめました。
27 すると、相手を痛めつけていたほうの男がモーセを押しのけて言いました。『だれがあんたを、おれたちの支配者や裁判官にしたんだ。 28 昨日、あのエジプト人を殺したみたいに、おれまでも殺そうとするのか。』
29 これを聞いて、モーセはまずいことになったと、エジプトを逃げ出し、ミデアンの地に身を寄せました。そこで、二人の子どもをもうけたのです。
30 それから四十年の歳月が流れました。ある日のことです。シナイ山に近い荒野で、モーセの前に天使が柴の燃える炎の中に現れました。 31 彼はその光景に驚き、何事かと近寄ってみると、主の声が聞こえてきました。 32 『わたしはあなたの先祖、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神である。』モーセはすっかり震え上がり、顔を上げる勇気もありませんでした。
33 主は続けて語られました。『くつを脱ぎなさい。あなたの立っている所は聖なる地だから。 34 わたしは、エジプトで苦しめられているわたしの民の姿を見、またその叫びを聞いた。わたしは彼らを救い出そうと下って来たのだ。行け。わたしが、あなたをエジプトに遣わす。』 35 こうして神様は、『だれがあなたを、おれたちの支配者や裁判官にしたのか』とユダヤ人たちに退けられたモーセを、もう一度、エジプトに帰らせたのです。モーセは初めて、イスラエル人の支配者、また解放者となったのです。 36 モーセは、数々の驚くべき奇跡によって、人々をエジプトから連れ出し、紅海を横断して、四十年にわたる荒野での生活を導きました。
37 このモーセが、『神様はあなたがたの中から、私のような預言者をお立てになる』と、イスラエルの人々に宣言したのです。 38 モーセは荒野では、神と人との仲介者でした。すなわち、シナイ山で、神のいのちのことばを天使から受け、それをイスラエルの人々に与える役を果たしたのです。
39 しかし私の先祖たちは、モーセの言うことに従おうとせず、しきりにエジプトに帰りたがりました。 40 そしてアロンに、『私たちをエジプトに連れ帰ってくれる神々の像を造ってください。私たちをエジプトから連れ出したモーセは、どうなったかわからないから』と迫りました。 41 彼らは子牛の像を造って、供え物をささげ、自分たちが造った物で楽しんでいました。
42-43 このため、神様は彼らに背を向け、彼らが日や月や星を神と思って仕えるのを放っておかれました。神である主は、預言者アモスの書の中で、こう語っておられます。
『イスラエルよ。あなたがたは
四十年の荒野の生活で、
わたしに、いけにえをささげたことがあるか。
いや、あなたがたのほんとうの関心は、
異教徒の偶像にあったのだ。
モロクの神や星の神ロンパ、
そのほか自分たちで造った偶像に。
だから、わたしはあなたがたを、
バビロンのかなたへ捕らわれの身とする。』（アモス5・25-27）
44 荒野の旅で、先祖たちは、神殿の代わりに持ち運びのできる幕屋を携えていました。その中には、神様が下さった十戒を彫った、石の板が二枚ありました。この幕屋は、神様がモーセに指示なさったとおり、寸分の狂いもなく造ってありました。 45 先祖たちは代々、この幕屋を受け継ぎ、ヨシュアの指揮のもとに外国と戦って得た新しい領土に運び込み、ダビデ王の時代までありました。
46 さて、神様はダビデ王をたいへん祝福なさいました。ダビデ王は、ヤコブの神のために永久に残る神殿を建てさせてくださいと熱心に願いましたが、 47 実際に建てたのは、息子のソロモン王でした。 48-50 しかし神様は、人間が造った神殿にはお住みにならないのです。主は預言者の口を通して、次のように語っておられます。
『主は言われる。
天はわたしの王座、
地はわたしの足台。
いったいどのような家を
わたしのために建てようというのか。
わたしが、そのような所にとどまるだろうか。
わたしが、天と地とを造ったのではないか。』（イザヤ66・1-2）
51 あなたがたはほんとうに強情な異教徒です。いつまで聖霊にそむき続けるのですか、かつての先祖たちのように。 52 あなたがたの先祖が迫害しなかった預言者の名をあげることができたら、一人でもいいから言ってごらんなさい。もっとも、先祖たちは、正しい方がおいでになると預言した人たちを殺したのですが、あなたがたは、当のメシヤ（救い主）を裏切り、殺したのです。 53 あなたがたは、天使たちを通して受けた律法を破ったのです。」
ステパノの死
54 この告発に、ユダヤ人の指導者たちの怒りは爆発しました。彼らは歯ぎしりしてくやしがりました。 55 しかし、ステパノは聖霊に満たされ、ぐっと頭をもたげて天を見上げました。その目には、神の栄光と神の右に立っておられるイエスの姿が見えました。 56 「ごらんなさい。天が開けて、メシヤであるイエス様が、神の右に立っておられます。」
57 しかし、そのとき人々は耳をおおい、割れんばかりの大声をあげ、ステパノ目がけて殺到したので、彼の声はほとんど聞き取れないほどでした。 58 人々はステパノを石で打ち殺そうと、町の外に引きずり出しました。証人たち〔死刑執行人たち〕は上着を脱ぎ、パウロという青年の足もとに置きました。
59 石が雨あられと飛んで来る中で、ステパノは祈りました。「主イエスよ。私の霊を迎え入れてください。」 60 そして、ひざまずき、「主よ。どうぞこの罪の責任を、この人たちに負わせないでください！」と大声で叫んだかと思うと、ついに息絶えました。

7 大祭司問：「這是真的嗎？」 2 司提凡說：「各位父老兄弟，請聽我說！我們的祖先亞伯拉罕還未遷到哈蘭之前，住在美索不達米亞，榮耀的上帝向他顯現，說， 3 『你要離開家鄉和親族，到我要指示你的地方去。』 4 亞伯拉罕就離開迦勒底人的地方，在哈蘭住了下來。他父親過世以後，上帝又領他到你們現在居住的這個地方。 5 當時在這片土地上，上帝沒有給他任何產業，他甚至連立足之地也沒有。但上帝應許要把這片土地賜給他和他的後裔作產業，儘管那時候亞伯拉罕還沒有兒子。 6 上帝又說，『你的子孫必流落異鄉，受奴役、被虐待四百年。 7 但我必懲罰奴役他們的國家，之後你的子孫要離開那裡，在這片土地上事奉我。』 8 上帝又賜下割禮作為祂與亞伯拉罕立約的憑據。亞伯拉罕在以撒出生後的第八天為他行割禮。照樣，以撒為他的兒子雅各行了割禮，雅各也為他的兒子——以色列十二位先祖行了割禮。[a]

35 「百姓曾拒絕這位摩西，說，『誰立你作我們的首領和審判官？』上帝卻藉著在荊棘中顯現的天使親自差遣他，立他為首領和拯救者。 36 摩西帶領以色列人出埃及，過紅海，越曠野，四十年間行了許多神蹟奇事。 37 就是這位摩西曾對以色列人說，『上帝要在你們中間興起一位像我一樣的先知。』 38 這位摩西曾在曠野與以色列的會眾——我們的祖先在一起，又在西奈山上與向他傳信息的天使在一起，並且領受了生命之道傳給我們。
39 「可是我們的祖先不聽從他，甚至棄絕他，心裡對埃及戀戀不捨。 40 他們請求亞倫說，『為我們造一些神像來帶領我們吧！領我們離開埃及的那個摩西不知怎樣了。』 41 於是，他們造了一個牛犢像，向它獻祭，並為自己所做的事沾沾自喜。 42 因此，上帝轉臉不顧他們，任由他們祭拜日月星辰，正如先知書的記載，
『以色列家啊，
在曠野的四十年間，
你們向我獻過祭物和供品嗎？
43 你們抬著為自己所造的神像，
就是摩洛的帳篷和理番神明的星，
祭拜它們，
所以我要把你們趕到比巴比倫還遠的地方去。』
44 「我們的祖先在曠野的時候，一直帶著安放約櫃的聖幕，這聖幕是上帝吩咐摩西照他所看見的樣式造的。 45 後來我們的祖先承受了聖幕。上帝從我們祖先面前趕走外族人，使他們得到了應許之地。他們同約書亞把聖幕帶到那裡，一直到大衛的時代。 46 大衛蒙上帝悅納，祈求為雅各的上帝建造一座聖殿。 47 結果是他的兒子所羅門為上帝建成了聖殿。
48 「其實至高的上帝並不住人造的殿，祂曾藉著先知說， 49 『天是我的寶座，地是我的腳凳，你們要為我造怎樣的殿宇？哪裡可作我的安歇之處？ 50 這一切不都是我親手創造的嗎？』
51 「你們這些頑固不化、耳不聽心不悔的人[b]，經常抗拒聖靈，所作所為和你們的祖先如出一轍！ 52 哪一位先知沒有被你們祖先迫害？那些預言義者——彌賽亞要來的人也被你們的祖先殺害。如今你們竟出賣了那位公義者，殺害了祂！ 53 你們接受了上帝藉天使所傳的律法，竟不遵守！」
司提凡殉道
54 眾人聽了這番話，怒火中燒，咬牙切齒。 55 司提凡卻被聖靈充滿，定睛望天，看見上帝的榮耀和站在上帝右邊的耶穌。 56 司提凡說：「看啊！我看見天開了，人子站在上帝的右邊。」
57 眾人大喊大叫，捂著耳朵，蜂擁而上， 58 把司提凡拉到城外，用石頭打他。指控他的人把他們的衣服交給一個名叫掃羅的青年看管。 59 在亂石擊打之下，司提凡呼求說：「主耶穌啊，接收我的靈魂吧！」然後跪下高聲說： 60 「主啊，不要追究他們的罪！」說完後，就斷氣了。

7 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
10 And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11 Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
12 But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
13 And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
14 Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
15 So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,
16 And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
17 But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18 Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:
21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
22 And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
23 And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
25 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
29 Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
30 And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
32 Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
33 Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
34 I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
35 This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
36 He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
37 This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.
38 This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
39 To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,
40 Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
42 Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
43 Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.
45 Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;
46 Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.
47 But Solomon built him an house.
48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
50 Hath not my hand made all these things?
51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
52 Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:
53 Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.
55 But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,
58 And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.
59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
