13 It used to be when Israel spoke, the nations shook with fear, for he was a mighty prince; but he worshiped Baal and sealed his doom.

And now the people disobey more and more. They melt their silver to mold into idols, formed with skill by the hands of men. “Sacrifice to these!” they say—men kissing calves! They shall disappear like morning mist, like dew that quickly dries away, like chaff blown by the wind, like a cloud of smoke.

“I alone am God, your Lord, and have been ever since I brought you out from Egypt. You have no God but me, for there is no other Savior. I took care of you in the wilderness, in that dry and thirsty land. But when you had eaten and were satisfied, then you became proud and forgot me. So I will come upon you like a lion, or a leopard lurking along the road. I will rip you to pieces like a bear whose cubs have been taken away, and like a lion I will devour you.

“O Israel, if I destroy you, who can save you? 10 Where is your king? Why don’t you call on him for help? Where are all the leaders of the land? You asked for them, now let them save you! 11 I gave you kings in my anger, and I took them away[a] in my wrath. 12 Ephraim’s sins are harvested and stored away for punishment.

13 “New birth is offered him, but he is like a child resisting in the womb—how stubborn! how foolish! 14 Shall I ransom him from hell? Shall I redeem him from Death? O Death, bring forth your terrors for his tasting! O Grave, demonstrate your plagues! For I will not relent!

15 “He was called the most fruitful of all his brothers, but the east wind—a wind of the Lord from the desert—will blow hard upon him and dry up his land. All his flowing springs and green oases will dry away, and he will die of thirst. 16 Samaria must bear her guilt, for she rebelled against her God. Her people will be killed by the invading army, her babies dashed to death against the ground, her pregnant women ripped open with a sword.”

  1. Hosea 13:11 I gave you kings in my anger, and I took them away. Probably an allusion to the kings of Israel assassinated during her last tempestuous years: Zechariah, Shallum, Pekahiah.

Ephraim’s Idolatry

13 (A)When Ephraim [a]spoke, there was trembling.
He (B)lifted himself up in Israel,
But through (C)Baal he became guilty and died.
And now they sin more and more
And make for themselves (D)molten images,
Idols (E)made from their silver according to their understanding,
All of them the (F)work of craftsmen.
They are saying of them, “Let the [b]men who sacrifice kiss the (G)calves!”
Therefore they will be like the (H)morning cloud
And like dew which [c]soon disappears,
Like (I)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor
And like (J)smoke from a [d]chimney.

Yet I have been (K)Yahweh your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know (L)any god except Me,
And there is no savior (M)besides Me.
I Myself (N)knew you in the wilderness,
(O)In the land of drought.
As they had their pasture, then they became (P)satisfied,
Indeed, they were satisfied, and their (Q)heart became raised up;
Therefore they (R)forgot Me.
So I will be (S)like a lion to them;
Like a (T)leopard I will [e]lie in wait by the wayside.
I will encounter them (U)like a bear robbed of her cubs,
And I will tear open [f]the chest enclosing their heart;
There I will also (V)devour them like a lioness,
As a beast of the field would rip them open.

It is your ruin, O Israel,
[g]That you are (W)against Me, against your (X)help.
10 Where now is your (Y)king,
That he may save you in all your cities,
And your (Z)judges of whom you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I (AA)gave you a king in My anger
And (AB)took him away in My wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is (AC)stored up.
13 The pains of (AD)childbirth come upon him;
He is (AE)not a wise son,
For [h]it is not the time that he should (AF)delay at the opening of the womb.
14 Shall I (AG)ransom them from the [i]power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
(AH)O Death, where are your thorns?
O Sheol, where is your sting?
(AI)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.

15 Though he (AJ)is fruitful among the [j]reeds,
An (AK)east wind will come,
The wind of Yahweh coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will (AL)become dry,
And his spring will be dried up;
It will (AM)plunder his treasury of every desirable article.
16 [k]Samaria will be held (AN)guilty,
For she has (AO)rebelled against her God.
(AP)They will fall by the (AQ)sword;
Their infants will be (AR)dashed in pieces,
And their pregnant (AS)women will be ripped open.

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel

13 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;(A)
    he was exalted(B) in Israel.
    But he became guilty of Baal worship(C) and died.
Now they sin more and more;
    they make(D) idols for themselves from their silver,(E)
cleverly fashioned images,
    all of them the work of craftsmen.(F)
It is said of these people,
    “They offer human sacrifices!
    They kiss[a](G) calf-idols!(H)
Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
    like the early dew that disappears,(I)
    like chaff(J) swirling from a threshing floor,(K)
    like smoke(L) escaping through a window.

“But I have been the Lord your God
    ever since you came out of Egypt.(M)
You shall acknowledge(N) no God but me,(O)
    no Savior(P) except me.
I cared for you in the wilderness,(Q)
    in the land of burning heat.
When I fed them, they were satisfied;
    when they were satisfied, they became proud;(R)
    then they forgot(S) me.(T)
So I will be like a lion(U) to them,
    like a leopard I will lurk by the path.
Like a bear robbed of her cubs,(V)
    I will attack them and rip them open;
like a lion(W) I will devour them—
    a wild animal will tear them apart.(X)

“You are destroyed, Israel,
    because you are against me,(Y) against your helper.(Z)
10 Where is your king,(AA) that he may save you?
    Where are your rulers in all your towns,
of whom you said,
    ‘Give me a king and princes’?(AB)
11 So in my anger I gave you a king,(AC)
    and in my wrath I took him away.(AD)
12 The guilt of Ephraim is stored up,
    his sins are kept on record.(AE)
13 Pains as of a woman in childbirth(AF) come to him,
    but he is a child without wisdom;
when the time(AG) arrives,
    he doesn’t have the sense to come out of the womb.(AH)

14 “I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;(AI)
    I will redeem them from death.(AJ)
Where, O death, are your plagues?
    Where, O grave, is your destruction?(AK)

“I will have no compassion,
15     even though he thrives(AL) among his brothers.
An east wind(AM) from the Lord will come,
    blowing in from the desert;
his spring will fail
    and his well dry up.(AN)
His storehouse will be plundered(AO)
    of all its treasures.
16 The people of Samaria(AP) must bear their guilt,(AQ)
    because they have rebelled(AR) against their God.
They will fall by the sword;(AS)
    their little ones will be dashed(AT) to the ground,
    their pregnant women(AU) ripped open.”[b]
