Nebuchadnezzar's Dream
2 In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; (A)his spirit was troubled, and (B)his sleep left him. 2 Then the king commanded that (C)the magicians, (D)the enchanters, the (E)sorcerers, and (F)the Chaldeans be summoned to tell the king his dreams. So they came in and (G)stood before the king. 3 And the king said to them, “I had a dream, and (H)my spirit is troubled to know the dream.” 4 Then (I)the Chaldeans said to the king in Aramaic,[a] (J)“O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will show the interpretation.” 5 The king answered and said to (K)the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be (L)torn limb from limb, (M)and your (N)houses shall be laid in ruins. 6 But if you show the dream and its interpretation, (O)you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. (P)Therefore show me the dream and its interpretation.” 7 They answered a second time and said, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will show its interpretation.” 8 The king answered and said, “I know with certainty that you are trying to (Q)gain time, because you see that the word from me is firm— 9 if you do not make the dream known to me, (R)there is but one sentence for you. You have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till (S)the times change. (T)Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can show me its interpretation.” 10 (U)The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king's demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or (V)Chaldean. 11 The thing that the king asks is difficult, and no one can show it to the king except (W)the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.”
12 Because of this the king was angry and (X)very furious, and (Y)commanded that all (Z)the wise men of Babylon be destroyed. 13 So the decree went out, and the wise men were about to be killed; and they sought (AA)Daniel and his companions, to kill them. 14 Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to (AB)Arioch, the (AC)captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon. 15 He declared[b] to Arioch, the king's captain, “Why is the decree of the king (AD)so urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. 16 And Daniel went in and requested the king to appoint him a time, that he might show the interpretation to the king.
God Reveals Nebuchadnezzar's Dream
17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to (AE)Hananiah, (AF)Mishael, and (AG)Azariah, his companions, 18 (AH)and told them to seek mercy from the (AI)God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not (AJ)be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in (AK)a vision of the night. Then Daniel (AL)blessed the (AM)God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said:
(AN)“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
(AO)to whom belong wisdom and might.
21 (AP)He changes times and seasons;
(AQ)he removes kings and sets up kings;
(AR)he gives wisdom to the wise
(AS)and knowledge to those who have understanding;
22 (AT)he reveals deep and hidden things;
(AU)he knows what is in the darkness,
(AV)and the light dwells with him.
23 To you, O (AW)God of my fathers,
(AX)I give thanks and praise,
for (AY)you have given me wisdom and might,
and have now made known to me what (AZ)we asked of you,
for you have made known to us the king's matter.”
24 Therefore Daniel went in to (BA)Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon. He went and said thus to him: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon; bring me in before the king, and I will show the king the interpretation.”
25 Then (BB)Arioch brought in Daniel before the king (BC)in haste and said thus to him: “I have found (BD)among the exiles from Judah a man who will make known to the king the interpretation.” 26 The king declared to Daniel, (BE)whose name was Belteshazzar, (BF)“Are you able to make known to me the dream that I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, (BG)enchanters, (BH)magicians, or (BI)astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, 28 but (BJ)there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar (BK)what will be in the latter days. Your dream and (BL)the visions of your head as you lay in bed are these: 29 To you, O king, as you lay in bed came thoughts of what would be after this, (BM)and he who reveals mysteries made known to you what is to be. 30 But (BN)as for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because of any wisdom that I have more than all the living, but in order that the interpretation may be made known to the king, and that (BO)you may know the thoughts of your mind.
Daniel Interprets the Dream
31 “You saw, O king, and behold, a great image. This image, mighty and of exceeding brightness, stood before you, and its appearance was frightening. 32 (BP)The head of this image was of fine gold, (BQ)its chest and arms of silver, its middle and (BR)thighs of bronze, 33 (BS)its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 As you looked, a stone was cut out (BT)by no human hand, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and (BU)broke them in pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold, all together were broken in pieces, and became (BV)like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that (BW)not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that struck the image became (BX)a great mountain (BY)and filled the whole earth.
36 “This was the dream. Now we will tell the king its interpretation. 37 You, O king, (BZ)the king of kings, to whom (CA)the God of heaven (CB)has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory, 38 and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, (CC)the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, making you rule over them all—you are (CD)the head of gold. 39 (CE)Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you, and yet a third kingdom (CF)of bronze, (CG)which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And (CH)there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron, because iron (CI)breaks to pieces and shatters all things. And like iron that crushes, it shall (CJ)break and crush all these. 41 And as you saw (CK)the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron, it shall be a divided kingdom, but some of the (CL)firmness of iron shall be in it, just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay, so they will mix with one another in marriage,[c] but they will not hold together, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of those kings (CM)the God of heaven will set up (CN)a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall the kingdom be left to another people. (CO)It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and (CP)it shall stand forever, 45 just as (CQ)you saw that (CR)a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand, and that (CS)it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold. A (CT)great God has made known to the king what shall be after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.”
Daniel Is Promoted
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar (CU)fell upon his face and (CV)paid homage to Daniel, and commanded that (CW)an offering and (CX)incense be offered up to him. 47 The king answered and said to Daniel, “Truly, your (CY)God is God of gods and (CZ)Lord of kings, and (DA)a revealer of mysteries, for you have been able to reveal this mystery.” 48 Then the king gave Daniel high honors and many great (DB)gifts, and made him ruler over the whole (DC)province of Babylon and (DD)chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Daniel made a request of the king, and he (DE)appointed (DF)Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego over the affairs of (DG)the province of Babylon. But Daniel (DH)remained at the king's court.

2 느부갓네살이 왕이 된 지 두 번째 해에 몇 가지 꿈을 꾸었다. 왕은 그 꿈들을 꾸고 마음이 불안해서 잠을 잘 수가 없었다. 2 그래서 왕은 자신의 주술가들을 불렀다. 그들은 마법을 이용하고 별을 관찰하고 또 꿈을 풀이하여 앞으로 있을 일을 맞추는 사람들이었다. 왕은 그들에게 자기가 무슨 꿈을 꿨는지 알아맞히게 하려고 했다. 주술가들이 왕 앞에 와서 섰다.
3 왕이 그들에게 말했다. “내가 꿈을 꾸었는데 그것 때문에 마음이 불안하다. 그 꿈이 무엇을 뜻하는지 알고 싶다.”
4 그러자 이 갈대아 점성가들이 아람 말로 대답했다.[a] 그들이 말했다. “임금님, 만수무강하시옵소서. 저희는 임금님을 모시는 종들입니다. 저희에게 꿈을 말씀해 주십시오. 그러면 저희가 임금님께 그 꿈을 풀이해 드리겠습니다.”
5 느부갓네살 왕이 그들에게 말했다. “나의 뜻은 확고하다. 무슨 꿈이었는지 너희가 알아맞히어야 한다. 그리고 그 꿈을 풀이해야 한다. 그렇지 못할 때 너희를 갈가리 찢어죽이도록 명하겠다. 그리고 너희 집을 무너뜨려 쓰레기 더미로 만들도록 명하겠다. 6 그러나 너희가 내 꿈을 알아맞히고 풀이하면 너희에게 선물과 상과 큰 명예를 주겠다. 그러니 내 꿈을 알아맞히고 풀이해 보라.”
7 점성가들은 다시 왕에게 말했다. “임금님, 제발 저희에게 꿈을 말씀해 주십시오. 그러면 저희가 그 꿈을 풀이해 드리겠습니다.”
8 느부갓네살 왕이 대답했다. “너희는 내가 한 번 한 말은 바꾸지 않는다는 것을 알고, 지금 시간이나 벌려고 하는 것을 내가 모를 줄 아느냐? 9 너희가 내 꿈을 얘기해 주지 못하면 너희는 모두 같은 벌을 받게 될 것이다. 너희가 터무니없는 거짓말이나 꾸며서 시간을 벌려고 모의 한 모양인데 어림도 없다. 어서 내 꿈을 알아내라. 그래야 너희가 꿈풀이도 할 수 있다고 믿을 수 있을 것이다.”
10 갈대아 점성가들이 왕에게 대답했다. “임금님께서 지금 물으시는 것을 알아낼 수 있는 사람은 이 세상에 아무도 없습니다. 일찍이 어떤 왕도 점성가들이나 마술사들이나 갈대아 사람들에게 이런 일을 시킨 적이 없습니다. 아무리 권능이 많고 높은 왕도 자신의 점성가들에게 이런 일을 시키지 않았습니다. 11 임금님께서 물으시는 것은 너무나 어려워서 사람과 함께 살지 않는 신이라면 몰라도, 사람은 그 누구도 임금님께서 무슨 꿈을 꾸었으며, 그 꿈이 무엇을 뜻하는 지를 말할 수 없습니다.”
12 왕은 이 말을 듣고 몹시 화가 났다. 그래서 왕은 바빌로니아의 모든 지혜자들을 죽이도록 명령했다. 13 지혜자들을 죽이라는 느부갓네살 왕의 명령이 내리자 병사들은 지혜자들을 찾아 나섰다. 왕은 다니엘과 그의 친구들까지 죽이라고 신하들을 보냈다.
14 아리옥은 바빌로니아의 지혜자들을 죽이는 일을 맡은 친위대장이었다. 다니엘은 그의 눈치를 살피며 슬기로운 말로 조심스럽게 물었다. 15 “왕의 명령을 받드는 장군님, 왕께서 그런 심한 벌을 내리신 까닭이 무엇입니까?”
그러자 아리옥이 왕의 꿈에 관한 자초지종을 모두 얘기했다. 16 다니엘은 얘기를 들은 다음 느부갓네살 왕에게 갔다. 다니엘은 왕에게 시간을 조금 더 달라고 청했다. 그러면 자기가 왕께서 꾸신 꿈이 무슨 꿈인지 얘기하고 꿈풀이를 하겠다고 했다.
17 다니엘은 자기의 집으로 가서 하나냐와 미사엘과 아사랴에게 돌아가는 사정을 얘기해 주었다. 18 또 다니엘은 자기와 친구들이 바빌론의 다른 지혜자들과 함께 죽임을 당하지 않도록, 하늘의 하나님께서 자비를 베푸셔서, 자기들이 이 비밀을 알 수 있게 해 주시기를 간구하자고 말했다.
19 밤이 되자 하나님께서 다니엘에게 환상으로 그 비밀을 가르쳐 주셨다. 다니엘은 하늘의 하나님을 찬양했다. 20 다니엘은 이렇게 노래했다.
“지혜와 권능이 하나님의 것이니
하나님의 이름을 영원히 찬양하라.
21 그 분은 시간과 계절을 바꾸시는 분.
그 분은 왕들을 세우기도 하시고
왕들을 폐하기도 하시는 분.
그 분은 사람들에게 지혜를 주어 지혜롭게 하시는 분.
그 분은 사람들이 배워서 지혜로워지도록 하시는 분.
22 그 분은 알기 힘든
감추어진 비밀들을 아시는 분.
빛이 그 분과 함께 있으니
깊은 곳에 숨겨져 있는 것을 밝혀내시는 분이시다.
23 조상들을 보살피시던 하나님
당신께 감사와 찬양을 드립니다.
당신은 저에게 지혜와 힘을 주셨으며
저희의 이 기도를 들어주시어
왕의 꿈을 알게 해 주셨으니
주께 감사하며 찬양을 드립니다.”
다니엘 꿈을 풀이하다
24 다니엘은 아리옥에게 갔다. 아리옥은 느부갓네살 왕에게서 바빌로니아의 점성가들을 죽이라는 명령을 받은 사람이었다. 다니엘이 아리옥에게 말했다. “바빌로니아의 점성가들을 죽이지 마십시오. 그리고 저를 임금님께 데려다 주십시오. 임금님께 임금님이 꾼 꿈을 풀이해 드리겠습니다.”
25 아리옥은 다니엘을 급히 왕에게 데리고 갔다. 아리옥이 왕에게 말했다. “유다에서 잡혀온 포로[b]들 가운데 임금님의 꿈을 풀이하겠다고 하는 사람을 찾았습니다.”
26 왕이 벨드사살이라고도 하는 다니엘에게 물었다. “네가 내가 꾼 꿈을 얘기하고 그 꿈을 풀이할 수 있겠느냐?”
27 다니엘이 대답했다. “느부갓네살 임금님, 그 어떤 점성가나 마법사나 갈대아 사람도 임금님께서 물으신 비밀들을 말할 수 없습니다. 28 하지만 하늘의 하나님은 그 비밀들을 말씀해 주실 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 느부갓네살 임금님께 앞으로 있을 일을 꿈으로 보여 주셨습니다. 임금님께서 꾸신 꿈과 잠자리에서 보신 것들에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다. 29 임금님, 임금님께서는 잠자리에 드셔서 앞으로 일어날 일들에 대해서 생각하셨습니다. 그 때 비밀을 밝히시는 하나님께서는 임금님께 앞으로 일어날 일에 대해 보여 주셨습니다. 30 하나님께서는 이 비밀을 저에게도 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 그것은 제가 다른 사람들보다 지혜로워서가 아닙니다. 하나님께서 저에게 이 비밀에 대해 말씀하신 까닭은, 임금님께 그것이 무엇을 뜻하는지 가르쳐 드리기 위해서입니다. 그렇게 해서 임금님의 마음속에 있는 생각들을 임금님께서 아실 수 있게 하시려는 것입니다.
31 임금님, 임금님께서는 꿈에 아주 큰 신상이 앞에 서 있는 것을 보셨습니다. 그 신상은 아주 밝게 빛나고 있었고 놀라운 모습을 하고 있었습니다. 32 신상의 머리는 순금이었고, 가슴과 팔은 은이었으며, 배와 허벅지는 놋쇠로 되어 있었습니다. 33 신상의 종아리는 쇠로 되어 있었고, 발은 무쇠로 된 부분도 있었고 진흙으로 된 부분도 있었습니다. 34 임금님께서 그 신상을 보고 계실 때 아무도 돌을 잘라내지 않았는데, 난데없이 돌 하나가 떨어져 나와 무쇠와 진흙으로 된 신상의 발을 쳐서 부서뜨렸습니다. 35 그때 무쇠와 진흙과 놋쇠와 은과 금이 다 깨어져 산산조각이 났습니다. 깨진 조각들은 마치 여름 타작마당의 겨와 같았습니다. 바람이 불자 조각들은 모두 날아가 아무 것도 보이지 않았습니다. 그 자리에는 신상이 있었던 흔적조차도 없었습니다. 그러나 그 신상을 쳤던 돌은 아주 큰 산이 되어 온 세상을 채웠습니다.
36 이것이 임금님께서 꾸셨던 꿈입니다. 이제 임금님께 꿈풀이를 해드리겠습니다. 37 임금님, 임금님께서는 왕들 가운데 으뜸가는 왕이십니다. 하늘의 하나님께서 임금님께 왕국과 권력과 힘과 영광을 주셨습니다. 38 하나님께서는 임금님께 사람들과 들짐승들과 새들을 다스릴 권한을 주셨습니다. 그리고 그들이 어디에 살든 임금님께서 그들 모두를 다스리도록 만드셨습니다. 느부갓네살 임금님, 임금님은 그 신상의 금으로 된 머리이십니다.
39 임금님 다음으로 다른 왕국이 올 것입니다. 그러나 그 왕국은 임금님의 왕국만큼 위대하지는 않을 것입니다. 다음으로 세 번째 왕국이 세상을 다스릴 것입니다. 이것이 놋쇠로 된 부분입니다. 40 그 다음 네 번째 왕국이 있을 것입니다. 그 왕국은 무쇠같이 강할 것입니다. 무쇠는 물건을 부수어서 조각냅니다. 마찬가지로 네 번째 왕국도 다른 모든 왕국들을 부술 것입니다.
41 임금님께서는 신상의 발과 발가락이 진흙과 무쇠로 만들어져 있는 것을 보셨습니다. 그것은 네 번째 왕국이 갈라진 왕국이 될 것을 뜻합니다. 무쇠와 진흙이 섞여 있는 것을 보셨듯이 이 왕국은 무쇠와 같은 강한 힘도 조금 가질 것입니다. 42 신상의 발은 쇠로 된 부분과 진흙으로 된 부분으로 만들어져 있습니다. 따라서 네 번째 왕국은 무쇠처럼 강한 면도 있고 진흙처럼 약한 면도 있을 것입니다. 43 임금님께서는 무쇠와 진흙이 섞여 있는 것을 보셨습니다. 그들이 다른 인종과 섞여 살지만 무쇠와 진흙이 완전히 섞일 수 없듯이 네 번째 왕국의 사람들도 섞여 있으나 한 백성이 될 수는 없습니다.
44 네 번째 왕국의 왕들이 다스리는 동안 하늘의 하나님께서 다른 왕국을 세우실 것입니다. 이 왕국은 절대 무너지지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 다른 사람들에게 넘어갈 수 있는 왕국이 아닙니다. 이 왕국은 다른 모든 왕국들을 무너뜨려서 없앨 것입니다. 이 왕국은 영원할 것입니다!
45 느부갓네살 임금님, 임금님께서는 아무도 손을 대지 않았는데 바위에서 떨어져 나온 돌을 보셨습니다. 그 돌은 무쇠와 놋쇠와 진흙과 은과 금을 산산조각 냈습니다. 하나님께서 이렇게 임금님께 앞으로 일어날 일을 보여 주셨습니다. 그 꿈은 그대로 일어날 것이고 임금님께서는 이 꿈풀이를 믿으셔도 됩니다.”
46 느부갓네살 왕은 다니엘 앞에 엎드려 절했다. 왕은 다니엘 앞으로 예물과 향을 내리라고 명령했다. 47 왕이 다니엘에게 말했다. “그대의 하나님께서는 신들의 신이시고, 왕들의 왕이시고, 비밀을 드러내는 신이 분명하다. 그렇지 않고서야 어떻게 그대가 이런 비밀을 밝혀낼 수 있겠느냐?”
48 왕은 다니엘의 지위를 높이고 값비싼 선물도 주었다. 왕은 다니엘에게 바빌로니아의 모든 지방을 다스리는 일을 맡겼다. 그리고 바빌로니아의 모든 주술가들을 책임지는 일도 맡겼다. 49 다니엘은 왕에게 사드락과 메삭과 아벳느고를 바빌로니아 지방의 높은 관리로 뽑아 줄 것을 청했다. 왕은 다니엘이 청한 대로 했다. 다니엘은 왕을 가까이 모시는 높은 관리들 가운데 한 사람이 되었다.
