10 死蒼蠅會使芬芳的膏油發臭，
同樣，一點點愚昧足以毀掉智慧和尊榮。
2 智者的心引導他走正路，
愚人的心帶領他入歧途。[a]
3 愚人走路時也無知，
並向眾人顯出他的愚昧。
4 如果當權的人向你大發雷霆，
不要因此就離開崗位，
因為平心靜氣能避免大錯。
5 我發現日光之下有一件可悲的事，
似乎是掌權者所犯的錯誤：
6 愚人身居許多高位，
富人卻屈居在下。
7 我曾看見奴僕騎在馬上，
王子卻像奴僕一樣步行。
8 挖掘陷阱的，自己必掉在其中；
拆圍牆的，必被蛇咬；
9 開鑿石頭的，必被砸傷；
劈木頭的，必有危險。
10 斧頭鈍了若不磨利，
用起來必多費力氣，
但智慧能助人成功。
11 弄蛇人行法術之前，
若先被蛇咬，
行法術還有什麼用呢？
12 智者口出恩言，
愚人的話毀滅自己。
13 愚人開口是愚昧，
閉口是邪惡狂妄。
14 愚人高談闊論，
其實無人知道將來的事，
人死後，誰能告訴他世間的事呢？
15 愚人因勞碌而精疲力盡，
連進城的路也認不出來。
16 一國之君若年幼無知，
他的臣宰從早到晚只顧宴樂，
那國就有禍了！
17 一國之君若英明尊貴，
他的臣宰為了強身健體而節制飲食，
不酗酒宴樂，那國就有福了！
18 屋頂因人懶惰而坍塌，
房間因人遊手好閒而漏雨。
19 宴席帶來歡笑，
酒使人開懷，
錢使人萬事亨通。
20 不可咒詛君王，
連這樣的意念都不可有，
也不可在臥室裡咒詛富豪，
因為天空的飛鳥會通風報信，
有翅膀的會把事情四處傳開。

智慧使人成功
10 几只死苍蝇能使做香料者的膏油发霉变臭，一点点愚昧比智慧和荣誉的影响更大。 2 智慧人的心向右，愚昧人的心偏左。 3 愚昧人连走路的时候，也显出无知；他对每一个人表现出他是个愚昧人（“他对每一个人表现出他是个愚昧人”或译：“他称每一个人都是愚昧的”）。 4 如果掌权者向你发怒，你不要离开原位，因为柔顺能免大过。
5 在日光之下我看见一件憾事，好象是出于官长无意的错误， 6 就是愚昧人得居众多高位，富有的人却处卑位。 7 我见过奴仆骑马，贵族却像奴仆一样在地上步行。
8 挖陷阱的，自己掉进去；拆墙垣的，有蛇来咬他。 9 采石的，被石打伤；劈柴的，被柴损害。 10 斧头若钝了，还不把斧刃磨快，就必多费力气；智慧的好处在于助人成功。 11 未行法术先被蛇咬，那么，法术对行法术的人就毫无用处。
12 智慧人的口，说出恩言；愚昧人的嘴，却吞灭自己。 13 愚昧人的话开头是愚昧，结尾是邪恶狂妄。 14 愚昧人多言多语。人不知道将来会有甚么事，谁能告诉他死后会发生甚么事呢？ 15 愚昧人的劳碌徒使自己困乏，他连怎样进城也不知道。
16 邦国啊，如果你的王是个孩童，而你的大臣又一早吃喝宴乐，你就有祸了。 17 邦国啊，如果你的王是贵冑之子，而你的大臣又按时吃喝，为要得力，不为醉酒，你就有福了。 18 房顶塌下是因为懒惰，房屋滴漏是因为懒得动手。 19 设宴是为欢笑，酒能使人生快活，金钱能解决万事。 20 不要在意念中咒骂君王，也不要在卧房中咒骂财主，因为空中的飞鸟会传声，有翅膀的会述说这事。

10 „Aşa cum muştele moarte strică şi fermentează untdelemnul negustorului,
tot aşa puţină nebunie copleşeşte înţelepciunea şi slava.
2 Inima înţeleptului îl conduce la dreapta,
dar inima nesăbuitului îl conduce la stânga.[a]
3 Prostul umblă fără minte pe cale
şi se laudă tuturor cu prostia lui.
4 Dacă izbucneşte mânia stăpânitorului împotriva ta,
nu-ţi pierde cumpătul,
căci calmul te păzeşte de mari păcate.
5 Există un rău pe care l-am văzut sub soare,
ca o greşeală care vine din partea stăpânitorului:
6 prostia este pusă în multe funcţii înalte,
pe când cei înstăriţi ocupă funcţii modeste.
7 Am văzut sclavi călare
şi prinţi mergând pe jos ca sclavii.
8 Cel ce sapă groapa altuia, poate să cadă el în ea,
iar pe cel ce dărâmă un zid, îl poate muşca un şarpe.
9 Cine sfărâmă pietre, poate fi lovit de ele,
şi cine crapă lemne, se află în pericol din pricina lor.
10 Dacă fierul toporului este tocit
şi lama lui neascuţită,
trebuie să-ţi înteţeşti eforturile la tăiat!
De aceea la câştig se ajunge prin înţelepciune!
11 Când şarpele muşcă, fiindcă n-a fost vrăjit,
stăpânul lui nu are nici un câştig.
12 Cuvintele gurii înţeleptului sunt o desfătare,
dar buzele nebunului îl vor înghiţi.
13 Primele cuvinte ale gurii lui sunt prosteşti,
iar ultimele sunt nebunie curată –
14 prostul spune o mulţime de vorbe.
Omul nu ştie ce se va întâmpla;
cine îi poate spune ce va fi după el?
15 Osteneala prostului îl oboseşte;
nici măcar nu cunoaşte drumul spre cetate.
16 Vai de tine ţară, al cărei rege este un copil[b]
şi ai cărei prinţi chefuiesc dis-de-dimineaţă!
17 Ferice de tine, ţară al cărei rege este de viţă nobilă
şi ai cărei prinţi dau ospeţe la vremea potrivită,
ca să se întărească, şi nu să se îmbete!
18 Din pricina leneviei se lasă grinda,
iar, când mâinile sunt leneşe, plouă în casă.
19 Ospeţele se fac pentru a petrece,
vinul este pentru înveselirea vieţii,
dar argintul răspunde la toate.
20 Nu-l blestema pe rege nici chiar în mintea ta,
nu-l blestema pe cel înstărit nici chiar în odaia ta de culcare,
căci s-ar putea ca pasărea cerului să-ţi ducă vorba
şi un sol înaripat să-ţi dea pe faţă spusele.“

10 As dead flies give perfume a bad smell,
so a little folly(A) outweighs wisdom and honor.
2 The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.
3 Even as fools walk along the road,
they lack sense
and show everyone(B) how stupid they are.
4 If a ruler’s anger rises against you,
do not leave your post;(C)
calmness can lay great offenses to rest.(D)
5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun,
the sort of error that arises from a ruler:
6 Fools are put in many high positions,(E)
while the rich occupy the low ones.
7 I have seen slaves on horseback,
while princes go on foot like slaves.(F)
8 Whoever digs a pit may fall into it;(G)
whoever breaks through a wall may be bitten by a snake.(H)
9 Whoever quarries stones may be injured by them;
whoever splits logs may be endangered by them.(I)
10 If the ax is dull
and its edge unsharpened,
more strength is needed,
but skill will bring success.
11 If a snake bites before it is charmed,
the charmer receives no fee.(J)
12 Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,(K)
but fools are consumed by their own lips.(L)
13 At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
14 and fools multiply words.(M)
No one knows what is coming—
who can tell someone else what will happen after them?(N)
15 The toil of fools wearies them;
they do not know the way to town.
16 Woe to the land whose king was a servant[a](O)
and whose princes feast in the morning.
17 Blessed is the land whose king is of noble birth
and whose princes eat at a proper time—
for strength and not for drunkenness.(P)
18 Through laziness, the rafters sag;
because of idle hands, the house leaks.(Q)
19 A feast is made for laughter,
wine(R) makes life merry,
and money is the answer for everything.
20 Do not revile the king(S) even in your thoughts,
or curse the rich in your bedroom,
because a bird in the sky may carry your words,
and a bird on the wing may report what you say.
