Zidirea Templului începe iarăşi
5 Prorocii Hagai(A), prorocul, şi Zaharia(B), fiul lui Ido, au prorocit iudeilor care erau în Iuda şi la Ierusalim în Numele Dumnezeului lui Israel. 2 Atunci, Zorobabel(C), fiul lui Şealtiel, şi Iosua, fiul lui Ioţadac, s-au sculat şi au început zidirea Casei lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim. Şi împreună cu ei erau şi prorocii lui Dumnezeu care-i ajutau. 3 În aceeaşi vreme, Tatnai(D), dregătorul de dincoace de Râu, Şetar-Boznai şi tovarăşii lor de slujbă au venit la ei şi le-au vorbit aşa: „Cine(E) v-a dat învoire să zidiţi casa aceasta şi să ridicaţi zidurile acestea?” 4 Ei le-au mai(F) zis: „Care sunt numele oamenilor care zidesc clădirea aceasta?” 5 Dar ochiul(G) lui Dumnezeu veghea asupra bătrânilor iudeilor. Şi au lăsat să meargă înainte lucrările până la trimiterea unei înştiinţări către Darius şi până la primirea unei scrisori(H) de la el în această privinţă. 6 Iată cuprinsul scrisorii trimise împăratului Darius de Tatnai, dregătorul de dincoace de Râu, de Şetar-Boznai(I) şi tovarăşii lor din Afarsac, care locuiau dincoace de Râu. 7 I-au trimis o scrisoare cu următorul cuprins:
„Către împăratul Darius, sănătate! 8 Să ştie împăratul că ne-am dus în ţinuturile lui Iuda, la Casa Dumnezeului celui mare. Ea se zideşte din pietre cioplite şi în pereţi se pune lemn; lucrul merge repede şi izbuteşte în mâinile lor. 9 Am întrebat pe bătrâni şi le-am vorbit aşa: ‘Cine v-a dat(J) învoire să zidiţi casa aceasta şi să ridicaţi zidurile acestea?’ 10 Le-am cerut şi numele lor ca să ţi le facem cunoscut şi am pus în scris numele oamenilor care sunt în fruntea lor. 11 Iată răspunsul pe care ni l-au dat: ‘Noi suntem slujitorii Dumnezeului cerurilor şi al pământului şi zidim din nou casa care fusese zidită acum mulţi ani. Un mare împărat(K) al lui Israel o zidise şi o isprăvise. 12 Dar, după ce(L) părinţii noştri au mâniat pe Dumnezeul cerurilor, El i-a dat în mâinile lui Nebucadneţar(M), împăratul Babilonului, haldeeanul care a nimicit casa aceasta şi a luat pe popor rob la Babilon. 13 Totuşi, în cel dintâi an al lui Cirus(N), împăratul Babilonului, împăratul Cirus a dat poruncă să se zidească din nou această casă a lui Dumnezeu. 14 Şi chiar împăratul Cirus a scos din templul din Babilon uneltele de aur(O) şi de argint ale Casei lui Dumnezeu, pe care le luase Nebucadneţar din Templul de la Ierusalim şi le dusese în templul din Babilon, le-a dat în mâna aşa-zisului(P) Şeşbaţar, pe care l-a pus dregător, 15 şi i-a zis: «Ia uneltele acestea, du-te de le pune în Templul din Ierusalim şi să se zidească din nou Casa lui Dumnezeu pe locul unde era». 16 Acest Şeşbaţar a venit dar şi a pus(Q) temeliile Casei lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim. De atunci până acum se zideşte ea, şi nu s-a(R) isprăvit.’ 17 Acum, dacă împăratul găseşte cu cale, să se facă cercetări(S) în casa vistieriilor împăratului la Babilon, ca să vadă dacă s-a dat din partea împăratului Cirus o poruncă pentru zidirea Casei acesteia a lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim. Apoi, să ne trimită împăratul voinţa lui asupra acestui lucru.”

Tattenai’s Letter to Darius
5 Now Haggai(A) the prophet and Zechariah(B) the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied(C) to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel(D) son of Shealtiel and Joshua(E) son of Jozadak set to work(F) to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, supporting them.
3 At that time Tattenai,(G) governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai(H) and their associates went to them and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(I) 4 They[a] also asked, “What are the names of those who are constructing this building?” 5 But the eye of their God(J) was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.
6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius. 7 The report they sent him read as follows:
To King Darius:
Cordial greetings.
8 The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work(K) is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.
9 We questioned the elders and asked them, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and to finish it?”(L) 10 We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
11 This is the answer they gave us:
“We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple(M) that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished. 12 But because our ancestors angered(N) the God of heaven, he gave them into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.(O)
13 “However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree(P) to rebuild this house of God. 14 He even removed from the temple[b] of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple[c] in Babylon.(Q) Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar,(R) whom he had appointed governor, 15 and he told him, ‘Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.’
16 “So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God(S) in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished.”
17 Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives(T) of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.

5 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.
2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
3 At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
4 Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building?
5 But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
6 The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai and his companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king:
7 They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.
8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
9 Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?
10 We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.
11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.
12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon.
13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God.
14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.
16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

7 (They sent a letter to him, in which was written thus.)
To Darius the king:
All peace.
8 Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judea, to the [d]temple of the great God, which is being built with [e]heavy stones, and timber is being laid in the walls; and this work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands.

11 And thus they returned us an answer, saying: “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the [f]temple that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built (M)and completed. 12 But (N)because our fathers provoked the God of heaven to wrath, He gave them into the hand of (O)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and (P)carried the people away to Babylon. 13 However, in the first year of (Q)Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree to build this [g]house of God. 14 Also, (R)the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple that was in Jerusalem and carried into the temple of Babylon—those King Cyrus took from the temple of Babylon, and they were given to (S)one named Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor. 15 And he said to him, ‘Take these articles; go, carry them to the temple site that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be rebuilt on its former site.’ 16 Then the same Sheshbazzar came and (T)laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; but from that time even until now it has been under construction, and (U)it is not finished.”
17 Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, (V)let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there in Babylon, whether it is so that a decree was issued by King Cyrus to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and let the king send us his pleasure concerning this matter.
