5 第三天，以斯帖穿上朝服，站在王宫的内院，对着王殿；王在殿里坐在王位上，对着殿门。 2 王见王后以斯帖站在院内，就对她施恩，向她伸出手中的金杖，以斯帖就上前摸杖头。 3 王问她：“王后以斯帖啊，你有甚么事吗？你求甚么？就是一半江山，也必赐给你。” 4 以斯帖回答：“王若是欢喜，就请王今天带着哈曼来赴我为王预备的筵席。”

5 王说：“快把哈曼召来，好照着以斯帖的话去行。”于是王带着哈曼去赴以斯帖预备的筵席。 6 在酒席中，王问以斯帖：“你要甚么？我必赐给你；你求甚么？就是一半江山，也必为你成全。” 7 以斯帖回答说：“我所要我所求的就是： 8 我若是在王眼前蒙恩，王若是愿意赐给我所要的，成全我所求的，就请王带着哈曼明天再来赴我为你们预备的筵席；明天我必照着王的命令行。”

哈曼立了一木架

9 那天哈曼心里快乐，高高兴兴地出来；但是哈曼见了末底改在御门那里不站起来，也不因哈曼的缘故而退避，哈曼心里就对末底改充满忿怒。 10 哈曼忍住怒气，回家去了，就派人去请他的朋友和妻子细利斯来。 11 哈曼把他的富贵荣华、儿女的众多，以及王怎样使他尊大，怎样抬举他在王的众领袖和众臣仆之上的一切事，都数说给他们听。 12 哈曼又说：“王后以斯帖除我以外，没有邀请别人与王一同去赴她预备的筵席；明天又邀请我与王一同到她那里去赴席。 13 只是每逢我看见坐在朝门那里的犹大人末底改的时候，这一切对我都没有多大的意思。” 14 他的妻子细利斯和他所有的朋友都对他说：“叫人立一个二十二公尺高的木架，明早求王，把末底改挂在上面，然后你可以欢欢喜喜地与王一同赴筵席了。”这话使哈曼很满意，就叫人做了木架。

5 Aconteció que al tercer día se vistió Ester su vestido real, y entró en el patio interior de la casa del rey, enfrente del aposento del rey; y estaba el rey sentado en su trono en el aposento real, enfrente de la puerta del aposento. 2 Y cuando vio a la reina Ester que estaba en el patio, ella obtuvo gracia ante sus ojos; y el rey extendió a Ester el cetro de oro que tenía en la mano. Entonces vino Ester y tocó la punta del cetro. 3 Dijo el rey: ¿Qué tienes, reina Ester, y cuál es tu petición? Hasta la mitad del reino se te dará. 4 Y Ester dijo: Si place al rey, vengan hoy el rey y Amán al banquete que he preparado para el rey. 5 Respondió el rey: Daos prisa, llamad a Amán, para hacer lo que Ester ha dicho. Vino, pues, el rey con Amán al banquete que Ester dispuso.

6 Y dijo el rey a Ester en el banquete, mientras bebían vino: ¿Cuál es tu petición, y te será otorgada? ¿Cuál es tu demanda? Aunque sea la mitad del reino, te será concedida. 7 Entonces respondió Ester y dijo: Mi petición y mi demanda es esta: 8 Si he hallado gracia ante los ojos del rey, y si place al rey otorgar mi petición y conceder mi demanda, que venga el rey con Amán a otro banquete que les prepararé; y mañana haré conforme a lo que el rey ha mandado.

9 Y salió Amán aquel día contento y alegre de corazón; pero cuando vio a Mardoqueo a la puerta del palacio del rey, que no se levantaba ni se movía de su lugar, se llenó de ira contra Mardoqueo. 10 Pero se refrenó Amán y vino a su casa, y mandó llamar a sus amigos y a Zeres su mujer, 11 y les refirió Amán la gloria de sus riquezas, y la multitud de sus hijos, y todas las cosas con que el rey le había engrandecido, y con que le había honrado sobre los príncipes y siervos del rey. 12 Y añadió Amán: También la reina Ester a ninguno hizo venir con el rey al banquete que ella dispuso, sino a mí; y también para mañana estoy convidado por ella con el rey. 13 Pero todo esto de nada me sirve cada vez que veo al judío Mardoqueo sentado a la puerta del rey. 14 Y le dijo Zeres su mujer y todos sus amigos: Hagan una horca de cincuenta codos de altura, y mañana di al rey que cuelguen a Mardoqueo en ella; y entra alegre con el rey al banquete. Y agradó esto a los ojos de Amán, e hizo preparar la horca.

5 Tres días después, Ester se puso las vestiduras reales y entró en el patio interior de palacio, deteniéndose ante la sala en que el rey estaba sentado en su trono, el cual quedaba frente a la puerta. 2 En cuanto el rey vio a la reina Ester en el patio, se mostró cariñoso con ella y extendió hacia ella el cetro de oro que llevaba en la mano. Ester se acercó y tocó el extremo del cetro, 3 y el rey le preguntó:

—¿Qué te pasa, reina Ester? ¿Qué deseas? ¡Aun si me pides la mitad de mi reino, te la concederé!

Y Ester respondió:

4 —Si le parece bien a Su Majestad, le ruego que asista hoy al banquete que he preparado en su honor, y que traiga también a Amam.

Entonces el rey ordenó:

5 —Busquen en seguida a Amam, y que se cumpla el deseo de la reina Ester.

Así el rey y Amam fueron al banquete que la reina había preparado. 6 Durante el banquete, el rey dijo a Ester:

—¡Pídeme lo que quieras, y te lo concederé, aun si me pides la mitad de mi reino!

7 Y Ester contestó:

—Sólo deseo y pido esto: 8 que si Su Majestad me tiene cariño y accede a satisfacer mi deseo y a concederme lo que pido, asista mañana, acompañado de Amam, a otro banquete que he preparado en su honor. Entonces haré lo que Su Majestad me pide.

Amam prepara la horca para Mardoqueo

9 Amam salió del banquete muy contento y satisfecho; pero se llenó de ira al ver que Mardoqueo, que estaba a la puerta del palacio, no se levantaba y ni siquiera se movía al verlo pasar. 10 Sin embargo, en ese momento no demostró el odio que sentía; pero cuando llegó a su casa mandó llamar a sus amigos y a Zeres, su mujer, 11 y habló con ellos de sus grandes riquezas, de los muchos hijos que tenía, y de cómo el rey lo había distinguido entre sus funcionarios y colaboradores, dándole un puesto superior al de todos ellos. 12 Y añadió:

—Además, yo soy el único a quien la reina Ester ha invitado al banquete que hoy ofreció al rey; y me ha invitado de nuevo al banquete que le ofrecerá mañana. 13 Sin embargo, mientras yo vea a ese judío Mardoqueo sentado a la puerta del palacio real, todo esto no significará nada para mí.

14 Entonces su mujer y todos sus amigos le dijeron:

—Manda construir una horca, de unos veintidós metros de altura, y mañana por la mañana pídele al rey que cuelguen en ella a Mardoqueo. Así podrás ir al banquete con el rey sin ninguna preocupación.

Esta idea le agradó a Amam, y mandó preparar la horca.

Esther Appeals to the King for Help

5 It so happened that on the third day Esther put on her royal attire and stood in the inner court of the palace,[a] opposite the king’s quarters.[b] The king was sitting on his royal throne in the palace, opposite the entrance.[c] 2 When the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she met with his approval.[d] The king extended to Esther the gold scepter that was in his hand, and Esther approached and touched the end of the scepter.

3 The king said to her, “What is on your mind,[e] Queen Esther? What is your request? Even as much as half the kingdom will be given to you.”

4 Esther replied, “If the king is so inclined,[f] let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for the king.” 5 The king replied, “Find Haman quickly so that we can do as Esther requests.”

So the king and Haman went to the banquet that Esther had prepared. 6 While at the banquet of wine, the king said to Esther, “What is your request? It shall be given to you. What is your petition? Ask for as much as half the kingdom,[g] and it shall be done.”

7 Esther responded,[h] “My request and my petition is this: 8 If I have found favor in the king’s sight and if the king is inclined[i] to grant my request and approve my petition, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet that I will prepare for them. At that time[j] I will do as the king wishes.”[k]

Haman Expresses His Hatred of Mordecai

9 Now Haman went forth that day pleased and very much encouraged.[l] But when Haman saw Mordecai at the king’s gate, and he did not rise or tremble in his presence,[m] Haman was filled with rage toward Mordecai. 10 But Haman restrained himself and went on to his home.

He then sent for his friends to join him,[n] along with his wife Zeresh. 11 Haman then recounted to them his fabulous wealth,[o] his many sons,[p] and how the king had magnified him and exalted him over the king’s other officials and servants. 12 Haman said, “Furthermore, Queen Esther invited[q] only me to accompany the king to the banquet that she prepared. And also tomorrow I am invited[r] along with the king. 13 Yet all this fails to satisfy me so long as I have to see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king’s gate.”

14 Haman’s[s] wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, “Have a gallows 75 feet[t] high built, and in the morning tell the king that Mordecai should be hanged on it. Then go with the king to the banquet contented.”[u]

It seemed like a good idea to Haman, so he had the gallows built.

In that case the request was for the head of John the Baptist, which is a lot less than half the kingdom.

  9. Esther 5:8 tn Heb “if upon the king it is good.” Cf. the similar expression in v. 4, which also occurs in 7:3; 8:5; 9:13.

Perhaps the number assumes the gallows was built on a large supporting platform or a natural hill for visual effect, in which case the structure itself may have been considerably smaller. Cf. NCV “a seventy-five foot platform”; CEV “a tower built about seventy-five feet high.”
