生まれつきの盲人を癒す
9 歩いていたイエスは、生まれつき目が見えなかった一人の男を見かけた。 2 イエスの弟子たちが聞いた。「先生、どうして彼は生まれつき目が見えないの？誰の過ちがそうさせたの？彼の過ち？それとも彼の両親の過ちがそうさせたの？」
3 イエスは答えた。「どちらでもない。この人が生まれつき盲目なのは、この人に神の素晴らしさが表れるためだ。 4 わたしを遣わした方に与えられた仕事を、わたしたちは日中の間に全うしなければならない。夜は迫ってきている。そして、夜に仕事ができるものはいない。 5 この世にわたしがいる限り、希望の光はわたしだ！」
6 イエスはこう言った後、地面にツバを吐いて泥をこねると、その男の目にその泥をつけた。 7 イエスは彼に言った。「シロアムの池に行って、洗ってくるんだ」【「シロアム」とは送られたという意味】こうして男は池へと向かい、そこで洗って戻ってきた。すると、彼は見えるようになっていたのだ！
8 知人や近所の人たちは驚いて互いに言った。「おい！あいつ、いつも座って物乞いをしていた盲人だよな？」
9 ある人は「そうだ！」と言い、ある者は「いや、違う。よく似てるがあいつのはずがない」と口にした。
そこで、その男は自分から言った。「なに言ってんだい。おいらだよ！」
10 彼らは尋ねた。「いったい何があったんだ？どうやって見えるようになったんだよ？」
11 彼は答えた。「イエスという男が泥をこねて、おいらの目につけたのさ。そしたら、シロアムの池に行って洗えって言ったから、行って洗ったら見えるようになったんだ！」
12 彼らは聞いた。「その男はどこにいった？」
彼は答えた。「わかんねぇよ」
何人かのパリサイ派から質問を受ける元盲人
13 彼らは、その元盲人をパリサイ派のところへ連れて行った。 14 この日は休日だった。 15 そこでパリサイ派は男に尋ねた。「どれどれ、どうやって見えるようになったのかね？」
彼は答えた。「あの方がおいらの目に泥を塗り、それを洗うと見えるようになりました」
16 これを聞いたパリサイ派のある者は言った。「あの人は神に属しませんね。休日の掟を守らないのですから！」
他の人はこう言った。「おことばですが、過ちを犯す人間にこんな奇跡を行うことはできません」こうして、彼らはお互いに意見をぶつけ合った。
17 彼らはもう一度、盲目だった男に聞いた。「では、目を治された本人に聞きましょう。あなたは彼のことをどう思いますか？」
その男は答えた。「彼は神に遣われし預言者ですよ！」
18 ユダヤの指導者たちは、未だにこの男が盲目だったということを信じられなかったので、とうとうその男の両親まで呼び出した。 19 「この男はあなたの息子さんなんですね？本当に生まれつき見えなかったのでしたら、どうやって見えるようになったのでしょうか？」
20 彼の両親が答えた。「はい！この子は私たちの息子で・・・生まれつき目が見えませんでした・・・ 21 ですが、どうして見えるようになったのか、どなたがこの子の目を治したかは、まったく存じあげません。どうぞ本人から直接お聞きください。自分で答えられる年齢なので」 22 こう両親が答えたのはユダヤの指導者を恐れていたからだ。イエスが救い主だと言う者は、誰であれユダヤ集会所から除名されると公表されていたのだ。 23 だから、両親は「大人なのだから本人に聞いて」と答えたのだ。
24 ユダヤの指導者たちは、男をもう一度呼び出した。「いいですか！神様のためにも真実を語りなさい！私たちは知ってるんだ。ヤツが悪党で罪人であることぐらい。調べはついている」
25 すると、男は答えた。「あの人が悪人かどうかは知りませんが、これだけは知ってます。見えなかったおいらは見えるようになりました！」
26 彼らは聞いた。「なら、あいつは何をした？どうやってお前の目を治したっていうのか？」
27 彼は答えた。「さっきおいらはその質問に答えました！でも、あなた達は私の言ったことを聞いておりません。なぜまた同じ質問をするのですか？あの方のお弟子さんにでもなりたいのですか？」
28 これに対して彼らは男を侮辱して叫んだ。「なに！お前があいつの弟子だろが！われらはモーセの弟子だ！ 29 神様は間違いなくモーセには語っていた。だが、あいつはどこから来たのかもわからん！」
30 男は答えた。「これは驚きました・・・おいらの目を治したのに、あの方がどこから来たか分からないとおっしゃるのですか？ 31 神様は過ちを犯す人に耳を貸さず、神の心に従う者だけに耳を傾けることぐらい誰でも知っていることじゃないですか！ 32 生まれつき目が見えない人を誰かが癒したことなんて初めて聞きました。 33 だったらあの方は神様から来たことに間違いないですよね！もし神様からでなければ、こんなことはできるはずがない！！！」
34 ユダヤの指導者たちは答えた。「生まれつき罪まみれのお前がわれらに説教でもするつもりか」ユダヤの指導者は怒鳴りつけたあげく、ユダヤ集会所から男を追い出し、彼の出入りを禁止したのだった。
霊的な盲目
35 元盲人の男が集会所から追い出されたと聞いたイエスは、彼を見つけて尋ねた。「あなたは人の子を信じるかい？」
36 男は言った。「信じたい！だから、それが誰なのか教えてください！」
37 イエスは彼に言った。「もう彼とは会っているよ！あなたと話しているのが人の子だ」
38 男は答えた。「はい、信じます！」男は頭を下げてイエスを讃えた！
39 イエスは言った。「この世を裁くことができるようにわたしはこの世に来た！わたしは心の目が閉じている人の目を開き、見えると思い込んでいる人の心の目を閉ざすために来たのだ！」
40 イエスの近くにいた何人かのパリサイ派にはこの話が聞こえていたので、「今なんと？私たちが盲目だとでも言いたいのか！？」 とイエスに言い返した。
41 イエスが言った。「もし、あなた方が本当に盲目だったら、過ちに問われないで済んだでしょうに。だが、あなた方は自分には見えている！と言う。だからあなた方はずっと有罪なのだ！」

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
9 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi,(A) who sinned,(B) this man(C) or his parents,(D) that he was born blind?”
3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.(E) 4 As long as it is day,(F) we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”(G)
6 After saying this, he spit(H) on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam”(I) (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.(J)
8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?”(K) 9 Some claimed that he was.
Others said, “No, he only looks like him.”
But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”
10 “How then were your eyes opened?” they asked.
11 He replied, “The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see.”(L)
12 “Where is this man?” they asked him.
“I don’t know,” he said.
The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. 14 Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man’s eyes was a Sabbath.(M) 15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight.(N) “He put mud on my eyes,” the man replied, “and I washed, and now I see.”
16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.”(O)
But others asked, “How can a sinner perform such signs?”(P) So they were divided.(Q)
17 Then they turned again to the blind man, “What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened.”
The man replied, “He is a prophet.”(R)
18 They(S) still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man’s parents. 19 “Is this your son?” they asked. “Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?”
20 “We know he is our son,” the parents answered, “and we know he was born blind. 21 But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don’t know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
