பெத்தானியாவில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 26:6-13; மாற்கு 14:3-9)
12 பஸ்கா பண்டிகைக்கு இன்னும் ஆறு நாட்கள் இருந்தன. இயேசு பெத்தானியாவுக்கு வந்தார். அங்கே லாசரு வாழ்ந்து வந்தான். (இவன் இறந்த பின்னரும் இயேசுவால் உயிர் பெற்று எழுந்தவன்) 2 பெத்தானியாவில் இயேசுவுக்கு இரவு விருந்து ஏற்பாடு செய்தனர். மார்த்தாள் உணவு பரிமாறினாள். இயேசுவோடு லாசருவும் இன்னும் பலரும் விருந்தில் கலந்துகொண்டனர். 3 மரியாள் சுத்தமான நளதம் என்னும் விலை உயர்ந்த வாசனைத் தைலத்தை ஒரு இராத்தல் கொண்டு வந்தாள். அவள் அதனை இயேசுவின் பாதங்களில் ஊற்றினாள். பிறகு அதனைத் தன் தலை மயிரால் துடைத்தாள். வீடு முழுவதும் தைலத்தின் வாசனை நிறைந்துவிட்டது.
4 யூதாஸ்காரியோத்தும் அங்கிருந்தான். (யூதாஸ் இயேசுவின் சீஷரில் ஒருவன். இவன்தான் பிறகு இயேசுவிற்கு எதிரானவன்.) மரியாள் செய்தவற்றை இவன் விரும்பவில்லை. 5 அவன் “இத்தைலம் முந்நூறு வெள்ளிகாசுகள் மதிப்பு உடையது. இதனை விற்று, அந்தப் பணத்தை ஏழைகளுக்குக் கொடுத்திருக்கலாம்” என்றான். 6 ஆனால் உண்மையில் அவனுக்கு ஏழைகளின்மீது அக்கறையில்லை. அவன் ஒரு திருடனானபடியால் இவ்வாறு சொன்னான். இவன்தான் இயேசுவின் சீஷர்களுள் பணப்பையை வைத்திருந்தவன். இவன் அவ்வப்போது பணப்பையிலிருந்து பணம் திருடி வந்தான்.
7 இயேசு அவனிடம், “அவளைத் தடை செய்யாதீர்கள். என்னை அடக்கம்பண்ணும் நாளுக்காக இதைச் சேமித்து வைத்திருந்தாள். 8 ஏழை மக்கள் எப்பொழுதும் உங்களோடு இருப்பார்கள். நானோ எப்பொழுதும் உங்களோடு இருப்பதில்லை” என்றார்.
லாசருவுக்கு எதிரான சதி
9 யூதர்களில் பலர், இயேசு பெத்தானியாவில் இருப்பதாக அறிந்தனர். ஆகையால் அவர்கள் அங்கே சென்றனர். அவர்கள் இயேசுவை மட்டுமல்லாமல் லாசருவையும் பார்க்க எண்ணினர். லாசரு இயேசுவால் மரணத்துக்குப் பின்னும் உயிரோடு எழுப்பப்பட்டவன். 10 ஆகவே, தலைமை ஆசாரியர்களும் இயேசுவோடு லாசருவையும் கொல்லத் திட்டமிட்டார்கள். 11 ஏனென்றால் லாசருவின் நிமித்தம் ஏராளமான யூதர்கள் தங்கள் தலைவர்களை விட்டுவிட்டு இயேசுவை நம்பத் தொடங்கினர். அதனால்தான் யூதத் தலைவர்கள் லாசருவையும் கொலைசெய்ய விரும்பினர்.
எருசலேமில் இயேசு
(மத்தேயு 21:1-11; மாற்கு 11:1-11; லூக்கா 19:28-40)
12 மறுநாள் இயேசு வருவதாக எருசலேமிலுள்ள பெருங்கூட்ட மக்கள் கேள்விப்பட்டனர். இம்மக்கள் பஸ்கா பண்டிகைக்காக வந்தவர்கள். 13 அந்த மக்கள் குருத்தோலைகளைப் பிடித்துக்கொண்டு இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்கச் சென்றனர். அவர்கள்:
“‘அவரைப் புகழ்வோம்! வருக!’
‘தேவனால் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்பட்டவரே கர்த்தரின் பேரால் வருகிறவரே!’(A)
“தேவன் இஸ்ரவேலின் ராஜாவை ஆசீர்வதிப்பாராக!”
என்று முழங்கினர்.
14 இயேசு ஒரு கழுதையைக் கண்டு அதன் மேல் ஏறிக்கொண்டார்.
15 “சீயோன்[a] நகரமே அஞ்சவேண்டாம். பார்.
உன் ராஜா வந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறார்.
அவர் இளங்கழுதைமேல் சவாரி செய்து வருகிறார்”(B)
என்றும் மக்கள் ஆரவாரம் செய்தனர்.
16 இயேசுவின் சீஷர்கள் இவற்றை முதலில் புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. ஆனால் இயேசு மகிமையில் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட பிறகு, அவர்கள் இவை ஏற்கெனவே எழுதப்பட்டிருக்கிறதே என்று உணர்ந்துகொண்டனர். அத்துடன் அவருக்காகத் தாங்கள் செய்த செய்கைகளையும் நினைவுகூர்ந்தனர்.
17 மரணத்திலிருந்து லாசருவை இயேசு எழுப்பி “கல்லறையை விட்டு வெளியே வா” என்று சொன்னபோது இயேசுவுடன் பலர் இருந்தனர். இப்பொழுது அவர்கள் மற்றவர்களிடம் இயேசு செய்தவற்றைப்பற்றிக் கூறினர். 18 இயேசு இந்த அற்புதத்தைச் செய்ததைக் கேள்விப்பட்ட ஏராளமான மக்கள் இயேசுவை வரவேற்பதற்காகத் திரண்டனர். 19 அதனால் பரிசேயர்கள் தங்களுக்குள், “பாருங்கள், நமது திட்டம் நன்மையைத் தரவில்லை. எல்லா மக்களும் அவரைப் பின்தொடர்கிறார்கள்” என்று பேசிக்கொண்டனர்.
ஜீவன்-மரணம்
20 அங்கே கிரேக்க நாட்டு மக்களில் சிலரும் இருந்தனர். இவர்கள் பஸ்கா பண்டிகையில் வழிபாடு செய்ய எருசலேமுக்கு வந்திருந்தனர். 21 இவர்கள் பிலிப்புவிடம் சென்று (கலிலேயாவிலுள்ள பெத்சாய்தாவில் இருந்து வந்தவன் பிலிப்பு) “ஐயா, நாங்கள் இயேசுவைச் சந்திக்க விரும்புகிறோம்” என்றனர். 22 பிலிப்பு அந்திரேயாவிடம் சொன்னான். பிறகு இருவரும் இயேசுவிடம் சொன்னார்கள்.
23 இயேசு அவர்களிடம், “மனிதகுமாரன் மகிமை பெறுகிற நேரம் வந்துவிட்டது. 24 நான் உங்களுக்கு உண்மையைக் கூறுகிறேன். ஒரு கோதுமை விதை தரையில் விழுந்து (இறக்க) அழிய வேண்டும். பிறகுதான் அது வளர்ந்து ஏராளமாகக் கோதுமையைத் தரும். ஆனால் அது அழியாவிட்டால், அது தனி விதையாகவே இருக்கும். 25 தனக்குச் சொந்தமான வாழ்வை நேசிக்கிறவன் அதனை இழப்பான். இவ்வுலகில் தன் வாழ்வின்மீது வெறுப்புகொண்டவன் என்றென்றைக்கும் அதைக் காத்துக்கொள்வான். அவன் நிரந்தர வாழ்வைப் பெறுவான். 26 எனக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்கிறவன் என்னைப் பின்பற்றவேண்டும். நான் எங்கெங்கே இருக்கிறேனோ அங்கெல்லாம் என் பணியாளனும் இருப்பான். எனக்குப் பணி செய்கிறவர்களை என் பிதாவும் பெருமைப்படுத்துவார்.”
இயேசு தன் மரணத்தைப்பற்றிப் பேசியது
27 “நான் இப்போது கலக்கத்தில் இருக்கிறேன். நான் என்ன சொல்வது? ‘பிதாவே, என்னை இந்தத் துன்ப காலத்தில் இருந்து காப்பாற்றுங்கள்’ என்று சொல்லலாமா? இல்லை, துன்பப்படுவதற்காகவே இத்தருணத்தில் வந்தேன். 28 பிதாவே, உங்கள் பெயருக்கே மகிமையை தேடித்தருக!” என்றார்.
அப்போது வானில் இருந்து ஒரு குரல் வந்து, “நான் என் பெயருக்கு மகிமை கொண்டு வந்திருக்கிறேன். நான் அதை மீண்டும் செய்வேன்” என்றது.
29 அங்கே நின்றிருந்த மக்கள் அக்குரலைக் கேட்டார்கள். அவர்களில் சிலர் அதனை இடி முழக்கம் என்றனர்.
வேறு சிலரோ “ஒரு தேவதூதன் இயேசுவிடம் பேசினான்” என்றனர்.
30 மக்களிடம் இயேசு, “இந்தக் குரல் எனக்காக அல்ல. உங்களுக்காக. 31 உலகம் நியாயம் தீர்க்கப்படுவதற்கான தருணம் இதுதான். இப்பொழுது உலகை ஆண்டுகொண்டிருக்கும் சாத்தான் தூக்கி எறியப்படுவான். 32 நான் பூமியில் இருந்து உயர்த்தப்படுவேன். இது நடைபெறும்போது எல்லா மக்களையும் என்னோடு சேர்த்துக்கொள்வேன்” என்றார். 33 தான் எவ்வாறு இறந்துபோவேன் என்பதைக் காட்டவே இவ்வாறு கூறினார்.
34 ஆனால் மக்களோ, “கிறிஸ்து என்றென்றும் வாழ்வார் என்று நமது சட்டங்கள் கூறுகின்றனவே. அப்படியிருக்க ‘மனித குமாரன் உயர்த்தப்படுவார்’ என்று ஏன் கூறுகின்றீர்? யார் இந்த ‘மனித குமாரன்?’” எனக் கேட்டனர்.
35 பிறகு இயேசு, “இன்னும் சிறிது காலம் உங்களோடு ஒளி இருக்கும். எனவே, ஒளி இருக்கும்போதே நடந்துவிடுங்கள். அப்போதுதான் இருட்டாகிய பாவம் உங்களைப் பிடித்துக்கொள்ளாது. இருட்டிலே நடந்துபோகிறவனுக்குத் தான் எங்கே போகிறோம் என்பது தெரியாமல் இருக்கும். 36 ஆகவே, ஒளி இருக்கும்போதே அதன்மீது நம்பிக்கை வையுங்கள். அப்பொழுது நீங்கள் ஒளியின் பிள்ளைகள் ஆவீர்கள்” என்றார். இயேசு இவற்றையெல்லாம் சொல்லி முடித்தபின் அவ்விடத்தை விட்டுப் போனார். அவர் போய் அவர்களிடமிருந்து தன்னை மறைத்துக்கொண்டார்.
இயேசுவை நம்பாத யூதர்கள்
37 இயேசு இவ்வாறு ஏராளமான அற்புதங்களைச் செய்தார். மக்கள் அவற்றைப் பார்த்தனர். எனினும் அவர்மீது அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை வைக்கவில்லை. 38 தீர்க்கதரிசி ஏசாயா சொன்னது நிறைவேறும்படிக்கு இவ்வாறு நிகழ்ந்தது.
“கர்த்தாவே, நாங்கள் சொன்னதைக் கேட்டு நம்பிக்கை வைத்தவர்கள் யார்?
தேவனின் வல்லமையைக் கண்டுகொண்டவர்கள் யார்?”(C)
39 இதனால்தான் மக்கள் நம்பவில்லை. ஏனென்றால் ஏசாயா மேலும்,
40 “தேவன் மக்களைக் குருடாக்கினார்.
தேவன் அவர்களின் மனதை மூடினார்.
அவர்கள் கண்களினால் பாராமலும் மனதின் மூலம் அறியாமலும் இருக்கவேண்டும் என்றே தேவன் இதைச் செய்தார்.
அதன்பின் அவர்களை நான் குணப்படுத்துவேன்.”(D)
41 இயேசுவின் மகிமையை ஏசாயா அறிந்திருந்தபடியால் அவர் இவ்வாறு சொன்னார். எனவே ஏசாயா இயேசுவைப்பற்றிப் பேசினார்.
42 ஆனால் ஏராளமான மக்கள் இயேசுவை நம்பினார்கள். ஏராளமான யூதத்தலைவர்கள் கூட இயேசுவை நம்பினார்கள். ஆனால் அவர்கள் பரிசேயர்களுக்குப் பயந்தனர். எனவே, அவர்கள் இயேசுவை நம்புவதாக வெளிப்படையாகக் கூறவில்லை. தாம் ஜெப ஆலயத்திற்குப் புறம்பாக்கப்படுவோமோ என்று அவர்கள் பயந்தனர். 43 அவர்கள் தேவனால் வரும் பாராட்டைவிட மனிதரால் வரும் பாராட்டை விரும்பினர்.
தீர்ப்பளிக்கும் வசனங்கள்
44 பிறகு இயேசு உரத்த குரலில், “என்னில் விசுவாசம் வைக்கிறவன் எவனோ அவன், என்னை அனுப்பிய தேவனிடமும் விசுவாசம் வைப்பான். 45 என்னைப் பார்க்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவனே, என்னை அனுப்பிய தேவனையும் பார்க்கிறவனாகிறான். 46 நானே ஒளி, நான் இந்த உலகத்துக்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன். ஆகவே, என்னில் நம்பிக்கை வைக்கிற ஒவ்வொருவனும் இருளில் தங்கமாட்டான்.
47 “நான் மக்களுக்குத் தீர்ப்பளிப்பதற்காக இந்த உலகத்துக்கு வரவில்லை. உலகத்தில் உள்ள மக்களைப் பாதுகாக்கவே வந்திருக்கிறேன். எனவே, என் வார்த்தைகளைக் கேட்டும் என்னை நம்பாமல் போகிறவனை நான் நியாயந்தீர்ப்பதில்லை. 48 என்னை நம்ப மறுக்கிறவர்களையும் நான் சொல்பவற்றை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளாதவர்களையும் நியாயந்தீர்க்க ஒரு நீதிபதி உண்டு. அதுதான் நான் சொன்ன உபதேசங்கள். அவை இறுதி நாளில் அவர்களை நியாயம்தீர்க்கும். 49 ஏனென்றால் நான் சொன்ன உபதேசங்கள் என்னிடமிருந்து வந்தவையல்ல. நான் சொன்னவையும் உபதேசித்தவையும் என்னை அனுப்பிய என் பிதாவாகிய தேவன் எனக்குச் சொன்னவையாகும். 50 என் பிதாவின் கட்டளைகள் நித்திய ஜீவனுக்குரியவை என்பதை அறிவேன். ஆகையால் நான் சொல்கிறவைகளை என் பிதா எனக்குச் சொன்னபடியே சொல்கிறேன்” என்றார்.

Una mujer perfuma los pies de Jesús
12 Seis días antes de que se celebrara la fiesta de la Pascua, Jesús fue al pueblo de Betania. Allí vivía Lázaro, el hombre a quien Jesús había resucitado.
2 En ese pueblo, unos amigos de Jesús hicieron una cena para él. Lázaro estaba sentado a la mesa con Jesús, y su hermana Marta servía la comida. 3 María, su otra hermana, tomó una botella de un perfume muy caro[a] y perfumó los pies de Jesús. Después los secó con sus cabellos, y toda la casa se llenó con el olor del perfume.
4 Pero uno de los discípulos, que se llamaba Judas Iscariote, y que después traicionaría a Jesús, dijo:
5 —¡Mejor se hubiera vendido este perfume! Nos habrían dado el dinero de trescientos días de trabajo, y con él podríamos haber ayudado a los pobres.
6-8 Entonces Jesús le dijo a Judas:
—¡Déjala tranquila! Ella estaba guardando ese perfume para el día de mi entierro.[b] En cuanto a los pobres, siempre los tendrán cerca de ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán.
En realidad, a Judas no le importaban los pobres; dijo eso porque era un ladrón. Como él era el encargado de cuidar el dinero de Jesús y de los discípulos, a veces se lo robaba.
El plan para matar a Lázaro
9 Muchos de los judíos que vivían en Jerusalén se enteraron de que Jesús estaba en Betania; así que fueron allá, no sólo para verlo sino para ver también a Lázaro, a quien Jesús había resucitado.
10 Cuando los sacerdotes principales se enteraron de esto, planearon matar también a Lázaro, 11 pues por su culpa muchos judíos ya no querían nada con los sacerdotes, y se habían vuelto seguidores de Jesús.
Jesús entra en Jerusalén
12 Mucha gente había ido a la ciudad de Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua. Al día siguiente, cuando algunos escucharon que Jesús iba a llegar a la ciudad, 13 cortaron ramas de palmera y salieron a encontrarlo, gritando:
«¡Sálvanos, Dios nuestro!
¡Bendito el que viene de parte de Dios!
¡Bendito sea el Rey de Israel!»
14 Jesús, por su parte, se montó en un burrito que encontró en el camino. Así cumplió con lo que anunciaba la Biblia:
15 «¡No tengan miedo
habitantes de Jerusalén!
»¡Ya viene su Rey!
¡Viene montado en un burrito!»
16-19 Los que estuvieron presentes en Betania, cuando Jesús resucitó a Lázaro, habían contado en Jerusalén este milagro. Por eso la gente salió al encuentro de Jesús. Pero los fariseos se decían unos a otros: «Miren, ¡todos lo siguen! No vamos a poder hacer nada.»
Al principio, los discípulos de Jesús no entendían lo que estaba pasando; pero después de que Jesús murió y resucitó, se acordaron de que todo lo que le habían hecho a Jesús ya estaba anunciado en la Biblia.
Jesús anuncia su muerte
20 Entre las personas que habían ido a Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua, había unos griegos.[c] 21 Ellos fueron a un pueblo de Galilea para ver a Felipe, uno de los discípulos de Jesús, y le dijeron:
—Señor, queremos ver a Jesús.
Felipe, que era de Betsaida, 22 fue a contárselo a Andrés, y los dos fueron a decírselo a Jesús. 23 Él les dijo:
—Ha llegado el momento de que todos sepan de verdad quién es el Hijo del hombre. 24 Ustedes saben que el grano de trigo no produce nada, a menos que caiga en la tierra y muera. Y si muere, da una cosecha abundante. 25 Si ustedes consideran que su vida es más importante que obedecerme, no tendrán vida eterna. Pero si consideran que su vida en este mundo no es importante, y me obedecen, entonces tendrán vida eterna. 26 Si alguno de ustedes quiere servirme, tiene que obedecerme. Donde yo esté, ahí también estarán los que me sirven, y mi Padre los premiará.
27 »En este momento estoy sufriendo mucho, y me encuentro confundido. Quisiera decirle a mi Padre que no me deje sufrir así. Pero no lo haré, porque yo vine al mundo precisamente para hacer lo que él me mandó. 28 Más bien diré: “Padre, muéstrale al mundo tu poder.”
Al momento, desde el cielo se oyó una voz que decía: «Ya he mostrado mi poder, y volveré a mostrarlo.»
29 Los que estaban allí decían que habían oído un trueno. Otros decían: «Un ángel le ha hablado a Jesús.» 30 Pero Jesús les dijo:
«La voz que ustedes oyeron tiene como propósito ayudarlos a confiar en mí. 31 Ahora es cuando la gente de este mundo va a ser juzgada; y el que manda en este mundo, que es el diablo, será echado fuera. 32 Pero, cuando me cuelguen de la cruz, haré que todos crean en mí.»
33 Cuando Jesús dijo que lo colgarían de la cruz, se refería al modo en que iba a morir.
34 La gente le preguntó:
—¿Por qué dices tú que al Hijo del hombre lo van a colgar de una cruz? ¿Quién es este Hijo del hombre? La Biblia dice que el Mesías vivirá para siempre.
35-36 Jesús les contestó:
—Yo estaré con ustedes poco tiempo. Crean en mí mientras aún estoy aquí. Creer en mí significa caminar mientras todavía hay luz, para no ser sorprendido por la noche, porque el que camina en la oscuridad no sabe por dónde va.
Después de decir esto, Jesús se apartó de todos y se fue a un lugar donde no lo pudieran encontrar.
La gente no creía en Jesús
37 Jesús había hecho muchos milagros delante de esa gente, pero aun así la gente no creía en él. 38 Esto sucedió porque tenía que cumplirse lo que había escrito el profeta Isaías:
«Dios mío, ¿quién ha creído
en nuestro mensaje?
¿A quién le has mostrado tu poder?»
39 Por eso no podían creer, pues Isaías también escribió:
40 «Dios los ha hecho tercos,
y no los deja entender,
para que no se arrepientan
ni crean en él,
ni se salven.»
41 Isaías escribió esto porque anticipadamente vio el poder y la fama que Jesús habría de tener. 42 Sin embargo, muchos judíos y algunos de sus líderes creyeron en Jesús, pero no se lo decían a nadie, porque tenían miedo de que los fariseos los expulsaran de la sinagoga. 43 Ellos preferían quedar bien con la gente y no con Dios.
Jesús vino a salvar al mundo
44 Jesús dijo con voz fuerte:
«Si alguien cree en mí, también cree en Dios, que me envió. 45 Y si alguien me ve a mí, también ha visto al que me envió. 46 Yo soy la luz que ha venido para alumbrar este mundo. El que cree en mí no vivirá en la oscuridad.
47 »Yo no vine para juzgar a los que oyen mis enseñanzas y no las obedecen. No vine para condenar a la gente de este mundo, sino para salvarla. 48 El que me rechaza y no obedece mis enseñanzas, será condenado por esas mismas enseñanzas cuando llegue el fin.
49 Porque yo no hablo por mi propia cuenta, sino que mi Padre me envió y me dijo todo lo que debo enseñar. 50 Y sé que los que obedecen los mandamientos de mi Padre tendrán vida eterna. Por eso les he dicho todo lo que mi Padre me ordenó enseñarles.»

Mary Pours Perfume on Jesus at Bethany
12 It was six days before the Passover Feast. Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived. Lazarus was the one Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was given at Bethany to honor Jesus. Martha served the food. Lazarus was among the people at the table with Jesus. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard. It was an expensive perfume. She poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the sweet smell of the perfume.
4 But Judas Iscariot didn’t like what Mary did. He was one of Jesus’ disciples. Later he was going to hand Jesus over to his enemies. Judas said, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold? Why wasn’t the money given to poor people? It was worth a year’s pay.” 6 He didn’t say this because he cared about the poor. He said it because he was a thief. Judas was in charge of the money bag. He used to help himself to what was in it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “The perfume was meant for the day I am buried. 8 You will always have the poor among you. But you won’t always have me.”
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there, so they came. But they did not come only because of Jesus. They also came to see Lazarus. After all, Jesus had raised him from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus too. 11 Because of Lazarus, many of the Jews were starting to follow Jesus. They were believing in him.
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
12 The next day the large crowd that had come for the feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches from palm trees and went out to meet him. They shouted,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:25,26)
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it. This is just as it is written in Scripture. It says,
15 “City of Zion, do not be afraid.
See, your king is coming.
He is sitting on a donkey’s colt.” (Zechariah 9:9)
16 At first, Jesus’ disciples did not understand all this. They realized it only after he had received glory. Then they realized that these things had been written about him. They realized that these things had been done to him.
17 A crowd had been with Jesus when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead. So they continued to tell everyone about what had happened. 18 Many people went out to meet him. They had heard that he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “This isn’t getting us anywhere. Look how the whole world is following him!”
Jesus Tells About His Coming Death
20 There were some Greeks among the people who went up to worship during the feast. 21 They came to ask Philip for a favor. Philip was from Bethsaida in Galilee. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew. Then Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
23 Jesus replied, “The time has come for the Son of Man to receive glory. 24 What I’m about to tell you is true. Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only one seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it. But anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it and have eternal life. 26 Anyone who serves me must follow me. And where I am, my servant will also be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
27 “My soul is troubled. What should I say? ‘Father, keep me from having to go through with this’? No. This is the very reason I have come to this point in my life. 28 Father, bring glory to your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven. It said, “I have brought glory to my name. I will bring glory to it again.” 29 The crowd there heard the voice. Some said it was thunder. Others said an angel had spoken to Jesus.
30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31 Now it is time for the world to be judged. Now the prince of this world will be thrown out. 32 And I am going to be lifted up from the earth. When I am, I will bring all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show them how he was going to die.
34 The crowd spoke up. “The Law tells us that the Messiah will remain forever,” they said. “So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light. Do this before darkness catches up with you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 While you have the light, believe in it. Then you can become children of light.” When Jesus had finished speaking, he left and hid from them.
Some Jews Believe and Some Don’t
37 Jesus had performed so many signs in front of them. But they still would not believe in him. 38 This happened as Isaiah the prophet had said it would. He had said,
“Lord, who has believed what we’ve been saying?
Who has seen the Lord’s saving power?” (Isaiah 53:1)
39 For this reason, they could not believe. As Isaiah says in another place,
40 “The Lord has blinded their eyes.
He has closed their minds.
So they can’t see with their eyes.
They can’t understand with their minds.
They can’t turn to the Lord. If they could, he would heal them.” (Isaiah 6:10)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him.
42 At the same time that Jesus did those signs, many of the Jewish leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees, they would not openly admit they believed. They were afraid they would be thrown out of the synagogue. 43 They loved praise from people more than praise from God.
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only. They also believe in the one who sent me. 45 The one who looks at me sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come into the world to be its light. So no one who believes in me will stay in darkness.
47 “I don’t judge a person who hears my words but does not obey them. I didn’t come to judge the world. I came to save the world. 48 But there is a judge for anyone who does not accept me and my words. These words I have spoken will judge them on the last day. 49 I did not speak on my own. The Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have said. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So everything I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)
12 Six days before the Passover,(B) Jesus came to Bethany,(C) where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served,(D) while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume;(E) she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.(F) And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him,(G) objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.[b]” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag,(H) he used to help himself to what was put into it.
7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.(I) 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c](J) but you will not always have me.”
9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.(K) 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him(L) many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.(M)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(N)

Jesus Predicts His Death

34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law(AP) that the Messiah will remain forever,(AQ) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man(AR) must be lifted up’?(AS) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light(AT) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,(AU) before darkness overtakes you.(AV) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”(AW) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.(AX)
Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews
37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs(AY) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:
39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:
40 “He has blinded their eyes
and hardened their hearts,
so they can neither see with their eyes,
nor understand with their hearts,
nor turn—and I would heal them.”[i](BA)
41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory(BB) and spoke about him.(BC)
42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.(BD) But because of the Pharisees(BE) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;(BF) 43 for they loved human praise(BG) more than praise from God.(BH)
44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me.(BI) 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me.(BJ) 46 I have come into the world as a light,(BK) so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.(BL) 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them(BM) at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me(BN) to say all that I have spoken. 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life.(BO) So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”(BP)
