19 В те дни, когда не было царя у Израиля, жил один левит на склоне горы Ефремовой. Он взял себе наложницу из Вифлеема Иудейского.
2 Наложница его поссорилась с ним и ушла от него в дом отца своего в Вифлеем Иудейский и была там четыре месяца.
3 Муж ее встал и пошел за нею, чтобы поговорить к сердцу ее и возвратить ее к себе. С ним был слуга его и пара ослов. Она ввела его в дом отца своего.
4 Отец этой молодой женщины, увидев его, с радостью встретил его, и удержал его тесть его, отец молодой женщины. И пробыл он у него три дня; они ели и пили и ночевали там.
5 В четвертый день встали они рано, и он встал, чтоб идти. И сказал отец молодой женщины зятю своему: подкрепи сердце твое куском хлеба, и потом пойдете.
6 Они остались, и оба вместе ели и пили. И сказал отец молодой женщины человеку тому: останься еще на ночь, и пусть повеселится сердце твое.
7 Человек тот встал, было, чтоб идти, но тесть его упросил его, и он опять ночевал там.
8 На пятый день встал он поутру, чтоб идти. И сказал отец молодой женщины той: подкрепи сердце твое [хлебом], и помедлите, доколе преклонится день. И ели оба они.
9 И встал тот человек, чтоб идти, сам он, наложница его и слуга его. И сказал ему тесть его, отец молодой женщины: вот, день преклонился к вечеру, ночуйте, пожалуйте; вот, дню скоро конец, ночуй здесь, пусть повеселится сердце твое; завтра пораньше встанете в путь ваш, и пойдешь в дом твой.
10 Но муж не согласился ночевать, встал и пошел; и пришел к Иевусу, что [ныне] Иерусалим; с ним пара навьюченных ослов и наложница его с ним.
11 Когда они были близ Иевуса, день уже очень преклонился. И сказал слуга господину своему: зайдем в этот город Иевусеев и ночуем в нем.
12 Господин его сказал ему: нет, не пойдем в город иноплеменников, которые не из сынов Израилевых, но дойдем до Гивы.
13 И сказал слуге своему: дойдем до одного из сих мест и ночуем в Гиве, или в Раме.
14 И пошли, и шли, и закатилось солнце подле Гивы Вениаминовой.
15 И повернули они туда, чтобы пойти ночевать в Гиве. И пришел он и сел на улице в городе; но никто не приглашал их в дом для ночлега.
16 И вот, идет один старик с работы своей с поля вечером; он родом был с горы Ефремовой и жил в Гиве. Жители же места сего были сыны Вениаминовы.
17 Он, подняв глаза свои, увидел прохожего на улице городской. И сказал старик: куда идешь? и откуда ты пришел?
18 Он сказал ему: мы идем из Вифлеема Иудейского к горе Ефремовой, откуда я; я ходил в Вифлеем Иудейский, а теперь иду к дому Господа; и никто не приглашает меня в дом;
19 у нас есть и солома и корм для ослов наших; также хлеб и вино для меня и для рабы твоей и для сего слуги есть у рабов твоих; ни в чем нет недостатка.
20 Старик сказал ему: будь спокоен: весь недостаток твой на мне, только не ночуй на улице.
21 И ввел его в дом свой и дал корму ослам [его], а сами они омыли ноги свои и ели и пили.
22 Тогда как они развеселили сердца свои, вот, жители города, люди развратные, окружили дом, стучались в двери и говорили старику, хозяину дома: выведи человека, вошедшего в дом твой, мы познаем его.
23 Хозяин дома вышел к ним и сказал им: нет, братья мои, не делайте зла, когда человек сей вошел в дом мой, не делайте этого безумия;
24 вот у меня дочь девица, и у него наложница, выведу я их, смирите их и делайте с ними, что вам угодно; а с человеком сим не делайте этого безумия.
25 Но они не хотели слушать его. Тогда муж взял свою наложницу и вывел к ним на улицу. Они познали ее, и ругались над нею всю ночь до утра. И отпустили ее при появлении зари.
26 И пришла женщина пред появлением зари, и упала у дверей дома того человека, у которого был господин ее, [и лежала] до света.
27 Господин ее встал поутру, отворил двери дома и вышел, чтоб идти в путь свой: и вот, наложница его лежит у дверей дома, и руки ее на пороге.
28 Он сказал ей: вставай, пойдем. Но ответа не было, [потому что она умерла]. Он положил ее на осла, встал и пошел в свое место.
29 Придя в дом свой, взял нож и, взяв наложницу свою, разрезал ее по членам ее на двенадцать частей и послал во все пределы Израилевы.
30 Всякий, видевший это, говорил: не бывало и не видано было подобного сему от дня исшествия сынов Израилевых из земли Египетской до сего дня. Обратите внимание на это, посоветуйтесь и скажите.

Однажды левит, который жил в нагорьях Ефрема, взял себе наложницу из Вифлеема в Иудее. 2 Но она поссорилась с ним[a] и ушла в дом своего отца в Вифлееме. Она пробыла там четыре месяца, 3 и муж отправился к ней, чтобы убедить ее вернуться. С ним был слуга и два осла. Она ввела его в дом своего отца, и тот, увидев его, принял с радостью. 4 Тесть, отец молодой женщины, убедил его остаться, и он остался у него на три дня, ел, пил и спал там.
5 На четвертый день они встали ранним утром, и он собрался уходить, но отец молодой женщины сказал зятю:
– Сначала подкрепись, а потом пойдете.
6 И они вместе сели за еду и питье. После этого отец молодой женщины сказал:
– Прошу тебя, останься еще на ночь и приятно проведи время.
7 И хотя тот человек встал, чтобы идти, тесть убедил его, и он остался там еще на ночь. 8 Утром пятого дня, когда он собрался уходить, отец молодой женщины сказал:
– Подкрепись. Подождите до полудня!
И они вместе ели. 9 А когда этот человек вместе со своей наложницей и слугой встал, чтобы уйти, отец молодой женщины сказал ему:
– Смотри, уже почти вечер. Переночуйте здесь, ведь день уже на исходе. Останься и приятно проведи время. А завтра рано утром соберетесь в дорогу, и ты пойдешь домой.
10 Но не желая оставаться еще на ночь, этот человек ушел и направился к Иевусу (то есть Иерусалиму) с двумя навьюченными ослами и наложницей.
11 Когда они были рядом с Иевусом и день уже почти прошел, слуга сказал своему господину:
– Свернем-ка в этот город иевусеев и заночуем там.
12 Его господин ответил:
– Нет. Мы не свернем в город чужаков, которые не принадлежат к народу Израиля. Мы пойдем дальше к городу Гиве.
13 И добавил:
– Идем, постараемся добраться до Гивы или Рамы и заночевать в одном из этих мест.
14 Они пошли дальше, и когда подошли к Гиве, что в земле Вениамина, солнце уже село. 15 Они завернули туда на ночлег, вошли в город и сели на городской площади, но никто не позвал их в дом переночевать.
16 В тот вечер один старик, который был родом из нагорий Ефрема, но жил в Гиве (а жители этого места были вениамитянами), возвращался с поля после работы. 17 Увидев странника на городской площади, старик спросил:
– Куда ты идешь и откуда?
18 Он ответил:
– Мы идем из Вифлеема, что в Иудее, в далекие места нагорий Ефрема, где я живу. Я ходил в Вифлеем, что в Иудее, и теперь возвращаюсь в дом Господа[b]. Но никто не позвал меня в свой дом. 19 А у нас есть и солома, и корм для наших ослов, и хлеб с вином для нас самих, твоих слуг, – для меня, твоей служанки и юноши, который с нами. Больше нам ничего не нужно.
20 – Пойдемте ко мне домой, – сказал старик. – Я сам позабочусь о ваших нуждах. Только не ночуй на площади.
21 Он привел его к себе домой и накормил его ослов. А сами они, вымыв ноги, стали есть и пить.
22 Пока они приятно проводили время, жители города, порочные люди, окружили дом. Колотя в дверь, они кричали старику, хозяину дома:
– Выведи того человека, который к тебе пришел, чтобы нам с ним поразвлечься[c].
23 Хозяин дома вышел к ним и сказал:
– Нет, друзья мои, не поступайте так низко. Ведь этот человек – мой гость, не делайте такой подлости. 24 Смотрите, вот моя девственница-дочь и его наложница. Сейчас я выведу их к вам. Смирите[d] их и делайте с ними, что хотите. Но с этим человеком не делайте такой подлости.
25 Но люди не хотели его слушать. Тогда гость вывел к ним свою наложницу. Они насиловали[e] и бесчестили ее всю ночь, а когда начало светать, отпустили. 26 На рассвете женщина вернулась к дому, где был ее господин, упала у двери и лежала там, пока не рассвело.
27 Когда утром ее господин встал, открыл дверь и собрался идти дальше, он увидел свою наложницу, лежавшую у двери, держась за порог. 28 Он сказал ей:
– Вставай, пойдем.
Но ответа не было[f]. Тогда тот человек положил ее на осла и отправился домой.
29 Добравшись до дома, он взял нож, разрезал свою наложницу на двенадцать частей и разослал их по всем областям Израиля. 30 Всякий, кто видел это, говорил:
– Такого никогда не видели и не делали со дня выхода израильтян из Египта до сегодняшнего дня. Подумайте об этом! Посоветуйтесь и скажите, как тут быть!

A Levite and His Concubine
19 In those days Israel had no king.
Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim(A) took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.(B) 2 But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her parents’ home in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, 3 her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her parents’ home, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. 4 His father-in-law, the woman’s father, prevailed on him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking,(C) and sleeping there.
5 On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself(D) with something to eat; then you can go.” 6 So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the woman’s father said, “Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.(E)” 7 And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. 8 On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the woman’s father said, “Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!” So the two of them ate together.
9 Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said, “Now look, it’s almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home.” 10 But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus(F) (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine.
11 When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, “Come, let’s stop at this city of the Jebusites(G) and spend the night.”
12 His master replied, “No. We won’t go into any city whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah.” 13 He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah(H) and spend the night in one of those places.” 14 So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin.(I) 15 There they stopped to spend the night.(J) They went and sat in the city square,(K) but no one took them in for the night.
16 That evening(L) an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,(M) who was living in Gibeah (the inhabitants of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. 17 When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”(N)
18 He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the Lord.[a](O) No one has taken me in for the night. 19 We have both straw and fodder(P) for our donkeys(Q) and bread and wine(R) for ourselves your servants—me, the woman and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.”
20 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” 21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.(S)
22 While they were enjoying themselves,(T) some of the wicked men(U) of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.(V)”
23 The owner of the house went outside(W) and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.(X) 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter,(Y) and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”
25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her(Z) and abused her(AA) throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.
27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.
29 When he reached home, he took a knife(AB) and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.(AC) 30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt.(AD) Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!(AE)”

19 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.
2 And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.
3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4 And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5 And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6 And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10 But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12 And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13 And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15 And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16 And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18 And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the Lord; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
20 And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21 So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30 And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
