17 Пройдя Амфиполь и Аполлонию, они пришли в Фессалонику, где была иудейская синагога. 2 Павел, по своему обычаю, пошел в синагогу и там три субботы подряд рассуждал с иудеями о Писании, 3 объясняя и доказывая, что Христос должен был пострадать и воскреснуть из мертвых.

– Иисус, о Котором я вам возвещаю, и есть Христос, – говорил Павел.

4 Им удалось убедить как нескольких иудеев, так и многих благочестивых греков и немало знатных женщин. И все они присоединились к Павлу и Силе. 5 Это возбудило зависть остальных иудеев, и они, взяв с собой негодных людей, которых нашли на базаре, собрали толпу и устроили в городе беспорядки. Они ринулись к дому Иасона, ища Павла и Силу, чтобы вывести их к толпе. 6 Не найдя их там, они потащили Иасона и других братьев к городским властям.

Они с большим интересом восприняли сказанное Павлом и каждый день исследовали Писания, чтобы проверить, соответствует ли услышанное ими истине. 12 Многие из них поверили, поверило также много знатных гречанок и немало греков. 13 Но когда иудеи в Фессалонике узнали о том, что Павел возвещает слово Божье в Верии, они пришли и туда и стали подстрекать и возмущать народ. 14 Братья сразу же отправили Павла к морю, а Сила и Тимофей остались в городе. 15 Провожатые Павла пришли с ним в Афины, а затем отправились обратно с повелением от Павла, чтобы Сила и Тимофей как можно скорее пришли к нему.

– Афиняне! Я по всему вижу, что вы очень религиозны. 23 Я ходил вокруг и внимательно осматривал ваши святыни. На одном из жертвенников было написано: «НЕИЗВЕСТНОМУ БОГУ». Этого неизвестного Бога, Которого вы почитаете, даже не зная, Кто Он такой, я и возвещаю вам. 24 Бог, сотворивший мир и все, что в нем, является Господом неба и земли. Он не живет в храмах, построенных руками людей, 25 и не нуждается в том, чтобы люди служили Ему своими руками, как будто Ему чего-то не хватает, ведь Он Сам дает всем людям жизнь, дыхание и все остальное. 26 От одного человека Он произвел все человечество, чтобы люди заселили всю землю, на которой Он определил для всех время и границы обитания. 27 И все это Бог сделал для того, чтобы люди искали Его, могли ощутить Его и найти Его, хотя Он и не далек от каждого из нас. 28 Ведь «в Нем мы живем, движемся и существуем»[d], как об этом говорили и некоторые из ваших поэтов: «Ведь мы и есть Его род»[e]. 29 И раз мы род Бога, то мы не должны представлять Божество в виде золотого, серебряного или каменного истукана или в виде какого-либо образа, сделанного по замыслу человека и умением его. 30 Итак, оставляя в стороне времена невежества, Бог сейчас повелевает всем людям повсюду покаяться. 31 Он назначил день, когда Он будет судить мир по справедливости, и уже избрал Человека, Который и будет судьей. Он подтвердил это перед всеми, воскресив Его из мертвых!

32 Когда они услышали о воскресении из мертвых, то некоторые из них начали посмеиваться, другие же сказали:

– Об этом мы послушаем тебя в другой раз.

33 С этим Павел и покинул собрание. 34 Несколько человек, однако, присоединились к Павлу и уверовали. Среди них были Дионисий, член Ареопага, женщина по имени Дамарь и другие.

17 Or dopo essere passati per Anfipoli e per Apollonia, giunsero a Tessalonica, dove c'era la sinagoga dei Giudei.

2 E Paolo, secondo il suo solito, entrò da loro e per tre sabati presentò loro argomenti tratti dalle Scritture,

3 dichiarando e dimostrando loro, che era necessario che il Cristo soffrisse e risuscitasse dai morti, e dicendo: «Questo Gesú che vi annunzio è il Cristo».

4 Alcuni di loro credettero e si unirono a Paolo e Sila, come pure un gran numero di Greci pii e non poche donne ragguardevoli.

5 Ma i Giudei che non avevano creduto, mossi da invidia, presero con loro certi uomini malvagi tra la gente di piazza e, radunata una plebaglia, misero in subbuglio la città, avendo poi assalita la casa di Giasone, cercavano Paolo e Sila per condurli davanti al popolo.

6 Ma, non avendoli trovati, trascinarono Giasone e alcuni dei fratelli davanti ai capi della città, gridando: «Quelli che hanno messo sottosopra il mondo sono venuti anche qua,

7 e Giasone li ha accolti; tutti costoro agiscono contro gli statuti di Cesare, dicendo che c'è un altro re, cioè Gesú».

8 Cosí misero in agitazione il popolo e i capi della città, che udivano queste cose.

9 Ma essi, ricevuta una cauzione da Giasone e dagli altri, li lasciarono andare

10 Allora i fratelli fecero subito partire di notte Paolo e Sila per Berea ed essi, appena vi giunsero, entrarono nella sinagoga dei Giudei.

11 Or costoro erano di sentimenti piú nobili di quelli di Tessalonica e ricevettero la parola con tutta prontezza, esaminando ogni giorno le Scritture per vedere se queste cose stavano cosí.

12 Così molti di loro credettero assieme a un non piccolo numero di nobili donne greche e di uomini.

13 Ma, quando i Giudei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che la parola di Dio era stata annunziata da Paolo anche a Berea, andarono pure là, mettendo in agitazione le folle.

14 Allora i fratelli fecero subito partire Paolo in direzione del mare, ma Sila e Timoteo rimasero là.

15 Quelli che scortavano Paolo lo condussero fino ad Atene; poi, ricevuto da lui l'incarico di dire a Sila e a Timoteo di raggiungerlo quanto prima, tornarono indietro.

16 Ora, mentre Paolo li aspettava ad Atene, il suo spirito s'inacerbiva in lui, vedendo la città piena di idoli.

17 Egli dunque discuteva nella sinagoga con i Giudei e con le persone pie, e ogni giorno sulla piazza con quelli che incontrava.

18 Con lui discutevano pure alcuni filosofi epicurei, e stoici. Alcuni dicevano: «Che vuol dire questo cianciatore?». E gli altri: «Egli pare essere un annunziatore di divinità straniere», perché annunziava loro Gesú e la risurrezione.

19 Cosí lo presero e lo condussero nell'Areopago, dicendo: «Potremmo sapere qual è questa nuova dottrina che tu proponi?

20 Poiché tu rechi cose strane ai nostri orecchi, vogliamo dunque sapere che cosa significano queste cose».

21 Or tutti gli Ateniesi e i forestieri che dimoravano in quella città non avevano passatempo migliore che quello di dire o ascoltare qualche novità.

22 Allora Paolo, stando in piedi in mezzo all'Areopago, disse: «Ateniesi, io vi trovo in ogni cosa fin troppo religiosi.

23 Poiché, passando in rassegna e osservando gli oggetti del vostro culto, ho trovato anche un altare sul quale era scritto: AL DIO SCONOSCIUTO. Quello dunque che voi adorate senza conoscerlo, io ve lo annunzio.

24 Il Dio che ha fatto il mondo e tutte le cose che sono in esso, essendo Signore del cielo e della terra, non abita in templi fatti da mani d'uomo,

25 e non è servito dalle mani di uomini come se avesse bisogno di qualcosa, essendo lui che dà a tutti la vita, il fiato e ogni cosa;

26 or egli ha tratto da uno solo tutte le stirpi degli uomini, perché abitassero sopra tutta la faccia della terra, avendo determinato le epoche prestabilite e i confini della loro abitazione,

27 affinché cercassero il Signore, se mai riuscissero a trovarlo come a tastoni, benché egli non sia lontano da ognuno di noi.

28 Poiché in lui viviamo, ci muoviamo e siamo, come persino alcuni dei vostri poeti hanno detto: "Poiché siamo anche sua progenie".

29 Essendo dunque noi progenie di Dio, non dobbiamo stimare che la deità sia simile all'oro o all'argento o alla pietra o alla scultura d'arte e d'invenzione umana.

30 Ma ora, passando sopra ai tempi dell'ignoranza, Dio comanda a tutti gli uomini e dappertutto che si ravvedano.

31 Poiché egli ha stabilito un giorno in cui giudicherà il mondo con giustizia, per mezzo di quell'uomo che egli ha stabilito; e ne ha dato prova a tutti, risuscitandolo dai morti».

32 Quando sentirono parlare di risurrezione dei morti, alcuni lo beffavano, altri dicevano: «Su questo argomento ti ascolteremo un'altra volta».

33 Cosí Paolo uscí di mezzo a loro.

34 Ma alcuni si unirono a lui e credettero fra i quali anche Dionigi l'areopagita, una donna di nome Damaris e altri con loro.

17 (A)Dopo essere passati per Amfipoli e per Apollonia, giunsero a *Tessalonica, dove c'era una *sinagoga dei Giudei; 2 e *Paolo, com'era sua consuetudine, entrò da loro, e per tre sabati tenne loro ragionamenti tratti dalle Scritture, 3 spiegando e dimostrando che il Cristo doveva morire e risuscitare dai morti. «E il Cristo», egli diceva, «è quel Gesú che io vi annunzio». 4 Alcuni di loro furono convinti, e si unirono a Paolo e *Sila; e cosí una gran folla di Greci pii, e non poche donne delle famiglie piú importanti. 5 Ma i Giudei[a], mossi da invidia, presero con loro alcuni uomini malvagi tra la gente di piazza; e, raccolta quella plebaglia, misero in subbuglio la città; e, assalita la casa di Giasone[b], cercavano di trascinare Paolo e Sila davanti al popolo. 6 Ma non avendoli trovati, trascinarono Giasone e alcuni fratelli davanti ai magistrati della città, gridando: «Costoro, che hanno messo sottosopra il mondo, sono venuti anche qui, 7 e Giasone li ha ospitati; ed essi tutti agiscono contro i decreti di *Cesare, dicendo che c'è un altro re, Gesú». 8 E misero in agitazione la popolazione e i magistrati della città, che udivano queste cose. 9 Questi, dopo aver ricevuto una cauzione da Giasone e dagli altri, li lasciarono andare.

10 (B)Ma i fratelli subito, di notte, fecero partire Paolo e Sila per Berea[c]; ed essi, appena giunti, si recarono nella sinagoga dei Giudei. 11 Or questi erano di sentimenti piú nobili di quelli di Tessalonica, perché ricevettero la Parola con ogni premura, esaminando ogni giorno le Scritture per vedere se le cose stavano cosí. 12 Molti di loro, dunque, credettero, e cosí pure un gran numero di nobildonne greche e di uomini. 13 Ma quando i Giudei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che la Parola di Dio era stata annunziata da Paolo anche a Berea, si recarono là, agitando e mettendo sottosopra la folla. 14 I fratelli, allora, fecero subito partire Paolo, conducendolo fino al mare; ma Sila e *Timoteo rimasero ancora là.

15 Quelli che accompagnavano Paolo, lo condussero fino ad Atene, e, ricevuto l'ordine di dire a Sila e a Timoteo che quanto prima si recassero da lui, se ne tornarono indietro.

16 (C)Mentre Paolo li aspettava ad Atene, lo spirito gli s'inacerbiva dentro nel vedere la città piena di idoli. 17 Frattanto discorreva nella sinagoga con i Giudei e con le persone pie; e sulla piazza, ogni giorno, con quelli che vi si trovavano. 18 E anche alcuni filosofi epicurei e stoici conversavano con lui. Alcuni dicevano: «Che cosa dice questo ciarlatano?» E altri: «Egli sembra essere un predicatore di divinità straniere»; perché annunziava Gesú e la risurrezione. 19 Presolo con sé, lo condussero su nell'Areòpago[d], dicendo: «Potremmo sapere quale sia questa nuova dottrina che tu proponi? 20 Poiché tu ci fai sentire cose strane. Noi vorremmo dunque sapere che cosa vogliono dire queste cose».

21 Or tutti gli Ateniesi e i residenti stranieri non passavano il loro tempo in altro modo che a dire o ad ascoltare novità.

22 E Paolo, stando in piedi in mezzo all'Areòpago, disse:
«Ateniesi, vedo che sotto ogni aspetto siete estremamente religiosi. 23 Poiché, passando, e osservando gli oggetti del vostro culto, ho trovato anche un altare sul quale era scritto: Al dio sconosciuto. Orbene, ciò che voi adorate senza conoscerlo, io ve lo annunzio. 24 Il Dio che ha fatto il mondo e tutte le cose che sono in esso, essendo Signore del cielo e della terra, non abita in *templi costruiti da mani d'uomo; 25 e non è servito dalle mani dell'uomo, come se avesse bisogno di qualcosa; lui, che dà a tutti la vita, il respiro e ogni cosa. 26 Egli ha tratto da uno solo tutte le nazioni degli uomini perché abitino su tutta la faccia della terra, avendo determinato le epoche loro assegnate, e i confini della loro abitazione, 27 affinché cerchino Dio, se mai giungano a trovarlo, come a tastoni, benché egli non sia lontano da ciascuno di noi. 28 Difatti, in lui viviamo, ci moviamo, e siamo, come anche alcuni vostri poeti hanno detto: “Poiché siamo anche sua discendenza[e]”. 29 Essendo dunque discendenza di Dio, non dobbiamo credere che la divinità sia simile a oro, ad argento, o a pietra scolpita dall'arte e dall'immaginazione umana. 30 Dio dunque, passando sopra i tempi dell'ignoranza, ora comanda agli uomini che tutti, in ogni luogo, si ravvedano, 31 perché ha fissato un giorno, nel quale giudicherà il mondo con giustizia per mezzo dell'uomo ch'egli ha stabilito, e ne ha dato sicura prova a tutti, risuscitandolo dai morti».

32 Quando sentirono parlare di risurrezione dei morti, alcuni se ne beffavano; e altri dicevano: «Su questo ti ascolteremo un'altra volta». 33 Cosí Paolo uscí di mezzo a loro. 34 Ma alcuni si unirono a lui e credettero; tra i quali anche Dionisio l'areopagita, una donna chiamata Damaris, e altri con loro.

In Thessalonica

17 When Paul and his companions had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica,(A) where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue,(B) and on three Sabbath(C) days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,(D) 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer(E) and rise from the dead.(F) “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,”(G) he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas,(H) as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.

5 But other Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city.(I) They rushed to Jason’s(J) house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.[a] 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged(K) Jason and some other believers(L) before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world(M) have now come here,(N) 7 and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”(O) 8 When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. 9 Then they made Jason(P) and the others post bond and let them go.

In Berea

10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas(Q) away to Berea.(R) On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.(S) 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica,(T) for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures(U) every day to see if what Paul said was true.(V) 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.(W)

13 But when the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea,(X) some of them went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up. 14 The believers(Y) immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas(Z) and Timothy(AA) stayed at Berea. 15 Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens(AB) and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.(AC)

In Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue(AD) with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news(AE) about Jesus and the resurrection.(AF) 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus,(AG) where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching(AH) is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21 (All the Athenians(AI) and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)

22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus(AJ) and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.(AK) 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship(AL)—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.

24 “The God who made the world and everything in it(AM) is the Lord of heaven and earth(AN) and does not live in temples built by human hands.(AO) 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.(AP) 26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.(AQ) 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.(AR) 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’[b](AS) As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’[c]

29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.(AT) 30 In the past God overlooked(AU) such ignorance,(AV) but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.(AW) 31 For he has set a day when he will judge(AX) the world with justice(AY) by the man he has appointed.(AZ) He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”(BA)

32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead,(BB) some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” 33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus,(BC) also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.
