24 “As surely as I live,” declares the Lord, “even if you, Jehoiachin[a](A) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring(B) on my right hand, I would still pull you off. 25 I will deliver(C) you into the hands of those who want to kill you, those you fear—Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the Babylonians.[b] 26 I will hurl(D) you and the mother(E) who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return(F) to.”

28 Is this man Jehoiachin(G) a despised, broken pot,(H)
    an object no one wants?
Why will he and his children be hurled(I) out,
cast into a land(J) they do not know?
29 O land,(K) land, land,
hear the word of the Lord!
30 This is what the Lord says:
“Record this man as if childless,(L)
a man who will not prosper(M) in his lifetime,
for none of his offspring(N) will prosper,
none will sit on the throne(O) of David
    or rule anymore in Judah.”

The Righteous Branch

23 “Woe to the shepherds(P) who are destroying and scattering(Q) the sheep of my pasture!”(R) declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds(S) who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock(T) and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil(U) you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant(V) of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture,(W) where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds(X) over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid(Y) or terrified, nor will any be missing,(Z)” declares the Lord.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up for David[c] a righteous Branch,(AA)
a King(AB) who will reign(AC) wisely
and do what is just and right(AD) in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.(AE)
This is the name(AF) by which he will be called:
    The Lord Our Righteous Savior.(AG)

“So then, the days are coming,”(AH) declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’(AI) but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”(AJ)

Lying Prophets

Concerning the prophets:

My heart(AK) is broken within me;
    all my bones tremble.(AL)
I am like a drunken man,
like a strong man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
    and his holy words.(AM)
10 The land is full of adulterers;(AN)
because of the curse[d](AO) the land lies parched
and the pastures(AP) in the wilderness are withered.(AQ)
The prophets follow an evil course
    and use their power unjustly.

11 “Both prophet and priest are godless;(AR)
even in my temple(AS) I find their wickedness,”
declares the Lord.
12 “Therefore their path will become slippery;(AT)
they will be banished to darkness
    and there they will fall.
I will bring disaster on them
in the year they are punished,(AU)
declares the Lord.

13 “Among the prophets of Samaria
    I saw this repulsive thing:
They prophesied by Baal(AV)
and led my people Israel astray.(AW)
14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen something horrible:(AX)
They commit adultery and live a lie.(AY)
They strengthen the hands of evildoers,(AZ)
so that not one of them turns from their wickedness.(BA)
They are all like Sodom(BB) to me;
the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.”(BC)

15 Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty says concerning the prophets:

“I will make them eat bitter food
    and drink poisoned water,(BD)
because from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness(BE) has spread throughout the land.”

16 This is what the Lord Almighty says:

“Do not listen(BF) to what the prophets are prophesying to you;
they fill you with false hopes.
They speak visions(BG) from their own minds,
not from the mouth(BH) of the Lord.
17 They keep saying(BI) to those who despise me,
‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’(BJ)
And to all who follow the stubbornness(BK) of their hearts
they say, ‘No harm(BL) will come to you.’
18 But which of them has stood in the council(BM) of the Lord
to see or to hear his word?
Who has listened and heard his word?
19 See, the storm(BN) of the Lord
    will burst out in wrath,
a whirlwind(BO) swirling down
on the heads of the wicked.
20 The anger(BP) of the Lord will not turn back(BQ)
    until he fully accomplishes
    the purposes of his heart.
In days to come
    you will understand it clearly.
21 I did not send(BR) these prophets,
    yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
    yet they have prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council,(BS)
they would have proclaimed(BT) my words to my people
and would have turned(BU) them from their evil ways
    and from their evil deeds.(BV)

23 “Am I only a God nearby,(BW)
declares the Lord,
“and not a God far away?
24 Who can hide(BX) in secret places
so that I cannot see them?”
declares the Lord.
“Do not I fill heaven and earth?”(BY)
declares the Lord.

25 “I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies(BZ) in my name. They say, ‘I had a dream!(CA) I had a dream!’ 26 How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions(CB) of their own minds?(CC) 27 They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget(CD) my name, just as their ancestors forgot(CE) my name through Baal worship.(CF) 28 Let the prophet who has a dream(CG) recount the dream, but let the one who has my word(CH) speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?” declares the Lord. 29 “Is not my word like fire,”(CI) declares the Lord, “and like a hammer(CJ) that breaks a rock in pieces?

30 “Therefore,” declares the Lord, “I am against(CK) the prophets(CL) who steal from one another words supposedly from me. 31 Yes,” declares the Lord, “I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, ‘The Lord declares.’(CM) 32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,(CN)” declares the Lord. “They tell them and lead my people astray(CO) with their reckless lies,(CP) yet I did not send(CQ) or appoint them. They do not benefit(CR) these people in the least,” declares the Lord.
