11:2 they were called . . . they went away. The Hebrew of this verse is difficult to translate. The meaning may be that the pagans or their gods, the Baals, tempted Israel, causing the nation to depart from the Lord. Alternatively, those who called may be the prophets, whose messages were ignored as Israel went after other gods.
