3:7 Why have you gone in to my father’s concubine. Abner’s appropriation of Saul’s concubine would amount to a claim on the throne (12:8 note; 16:21 note; 1 Kin. 2:22). The reader is not told whether Ish-bosheth’s suspicion is well-founded or simple paranoia. Whatever the case, Abner uses the accusation as an occasion to shift his allegiance to David (vv. 8–10).
