10:1 fell slain. The soldiers (10:1), Saul (10:4, 6–8, 12–14), his sons (10:2, 6–8, 12), and his armor-bearer (10:5) all died, indicating that Saul was under severe divine judgment (10:13). The writer follows 1 Sam. 31 in his report of Saul’s suicide, defilement, and burial. He adds vv. 13, 14 to give the reason for these tragic events.
