  1. Samuel Warns against a Kingdom

    So Samuel passed on the Lord’s warning to the people who were asking him for a king.
  2. “He told us that the donkeys had already been found,” Saul replied. But Saul didn’t tell his uncle what Samuel said about the kingdom.
  3. Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us all go to Gilgal to renew the kingdom.”
  4. “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
  5. But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”
  6. And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to someone else—one who is better than you.
  7. And now I realize that you are surely going to be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will flourish under your rule.
  8. The Lord has done just as he said he would. He has torn the kingdom from you and given it to your rival, David.
