Knowing God Through Love(A)

(B)Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who (C)loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. (D)In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten (E)Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, (F)not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son (G)to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, (H)if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Seeing God Through Love

12 (I)No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 (J)By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 And (K)we have seen and testify that (L)the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. 15 (M)Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and (N)he who abides in love abides in God, and God (O)in him.

The Consummation of Love

17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that (P)we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 (Q)We love [a]Him because He first loved us.

Obedience by Faith

20 (R)If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, [b]how can he love God (S)whom he has not seen? 21 And (T)this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Obedience by Faith

Whoever believes that (U)Jesus is the Christ is (V)born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and (W)keep His commandments. (X)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And (Y)His commandments are not burdensome. For (Z)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that (AA)has overcome the world—[c]our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but (AB)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The Certainty of God’s Witness

This is He who came (AC)by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. (AD)And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness [d]in heaven: the Father, (AE)the Word, and the Holy Spirit; (AF)and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: (AG)the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

If we receive (AH)the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; (AI)for this is the witness of [e]God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God (AJ)has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God (AK)has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 (AL)He who has the Son has [f]life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, [g]and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Confidence and Compassion in Prayer

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that (AM)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and (AN)He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. (AO)There is sin leading to death. (AP)I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 (AQ)All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

A Sinful Woman Forgiven

36 (A)Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, (B)“This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred (C)denarii, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.” 44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no (D)water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. 45 You gave Me no (E)kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 (F)You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 (G)Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

48 Then He said to her, (H)“Your sins are forgiven.”

49 And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, (I)“Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Then He said to the woman, (J)“Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan(A)

25 And behold, a certain [a]lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, (B)“Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?

27 So he answered and said, (C)‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and (D)‘your neighbor as yourself.’

28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and (E)you will live.”

29 But he, wanting to (F)justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among [b]thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, (G)he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain (H)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had (I)compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, [c]when he departed, he took out two (J)denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, (K)“Go and do likewise.”
