28 “For they are a nation void of counsel,
Nor is there any understanding in them.
29 (A)Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this,
That they would consider their (B)latter end!
30 How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock (C)had sold them,
And the Lord had surrendered them?
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,
(D)Even our enemies themselves being judges.
32 For (E)their vine is of the vine of Sodom
And of the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of gall,
Their clusters are bitter.
33 Their wine is (F)the poison of serpents,
And the cruel (G)venom of cobras.

34 Is this not (H)laid up in store with Me,
Sealed up among My treasures?
35 (I)Vengeance is Mine, and recompense;
Their foot shall slip in due time;
(J)For the day of their calamity is at hand,
And the things to come hasten upon them.’

36 “For(K) the Lord will judge His people
(L)And have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their power is gone,
And (M)there is no one remaining, bond or free.
37 He will say: (N)‘Where are their gods,
The rock in which they sought refuge?
38 Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise and help you,
And be your refuge.

39 ‘Now see that (O)I, even I, am He,
And (P)there is no God besides Me;
(Q)I kill and I make alive;
I wound and I heal;
Nor is there any who can deliver from My hand.
40 For I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, “As I live forever,
41 (R)If I [a]whet My glittering sword,
And My hand takes hold on judgment,
I will render vengeance to My enemies,
And repay those who hate Me.
42 I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
And My sword shall devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the heads of the leaders of the enemy.” ’

43 “Rejoice,(S) O Gentiles, with His [b]people;
For He will (T)avenge the blood of His servants,
And render vengeance to His adversaries;
He (U)will provide atonement for His land and His people.”

44 So Moses came with [c]Joshua the son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people. 45 Moses finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them: (V)“Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your (W)children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law. 47 For it is not a [d]futile thing for you, because it is your (X)life, and by this word you shall prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to possess.”

Moses to Die on Mount Nebo

48 Then the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying: 49 (Y)“Go up this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, across from Jericho; view the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel as a possession; 50 and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be [e]gathered to your people, just as (Z)Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people; 51 because (AA)you trespassed against Me among the children of Israel at the waters of [f]Meribah Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin, because you (AB)did not hallow Me in the midst of the children of Israel. 52 (AC)Yet you shall see the land before you, though you shall not go there, into the land which I am giving to the children of Israel.”

The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant(A)

35 (B)“Let your waist be girded and (C)your lamps burning; 36 and you yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately. 37 (D)Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching. Assuredly, I say to you that he will gird himself and have them sit down to eat, and will come and serve them. 38 And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. 39 (E)But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would [a]have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 40 (F)Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

41 Then Peter said to Him, “Lord, do You speak this parable only to us, or to all people?

42 And the Lord said, (G)“Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food [b]in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 (H)Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. 45 (I)But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a (J)day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And (K)that servant who (L)knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 (M)But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.

Christ Brings Division(N)

49 (O)“I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But (P)I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is (Q)accomplished! 51 (R)Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, (S)but rather division. 52 (T)For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 (U)Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”

Discern the Time(V)

54 Then He also said to the multitudes, (W)“Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it is. 55 And when you see the (X)south wind blow, you say, ‘There will be hot weather’; and there is. 56 Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern (Y)this time?

Make Peace with Your Adversary

57 “Yes, and why, even of yourselves, do you not judge what is right? 58 (Z)When you go with your adversary to the magistrate, make every effort (AA)along the way to settle with him, lest he drag you to the judge, the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you shall not depart from there till you have paid the very last mite.”

56 (A)Yet they tested and provoked the Most High God,
And did not keep His testimonies,
57 But (B)turned back and acted unfaithfully like their fathers;
They were turned aside (C)like a deceitful bow.
58 (D)For they provoked Him to anger with their (E)high places,
And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.
59 When God heard this, He was furious,
And greatly abhorred Israel,
60 (F)So that He forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh,
The tent He had placed among men,
61 (G)And delivered His strength into captivity,
And His glory into the enemy’s hand.
62 (H)He also gave His people over to the sword,
And was furious with His inheritance.
63 The fire consumed their young men,
And (I)their maidens were not given in marriage.
64 (J)Their priests fell by the sword,
And (K)their widows made no lamentation.
