(A)“You shall have no other gods before Me.

(B)“You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; (C)you shall not bow down to them nor [a]serve them. (D)For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, (E)visiting[b] the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but (F)showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

(G)“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord (H)will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

(I)“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. (J)Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the (K)seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, (L)nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For (M)in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

12 (N)“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be (O)long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

13 (P)“You shall not murder.

14 (Q)“You shall not commit (R)adultery.

15 (S)“You shall not steal.

16 (T)“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

17 (U)“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; (V)you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Believers Are Salt and Light(A)

13 “You are the salt of the earth; (B)but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

14 (C)“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they (D)light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, (E)that they may see your good works and (F)glorify your Father in heaven.

Love Your Enemies(A)

43 “You have heard that it was said, (B)‘You shall love your neighbor (C)and hate your enemy.’ 44 [a]But I say to you, (D)love your enemies, bless those who curse you, (E)do good to those who hate you, and pray (F)for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for (G)He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 (H)For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your [b]brethren only, what do you do more than others? 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”

37 Jesus said to him, (A)“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: (B)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (C)On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(A)

29 (B)Now as soon as they had come out of the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. 31 So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.

Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset(C)

32 (D)At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed. 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and (E)cast out many demons; and He (F)did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him.

Then they came to Him, bringing a (A)paralytic who was carried by four men. And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.

When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”

And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? (B)Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? (C)Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has [a]power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and (D)glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

Matthew the Tax Collector(E)

13 (F)Then He went out again by the sea; and all the multitude came to Him, and He taught them. 14 (G)As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (H)“Follow Me.” So he arose and (I)followed Him.

15 (J)Now it happened, as He was dining in Levi’s house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him. 16 And when the scribes [b]and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, “How is it that He eats and drinks with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 When Jesus heard it, He said to them, (K)“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, [c]to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(L)

18 (M)The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the [d]friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be (N)taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(O)

23 (P)Now it happened that He went through the grainfields on the Sabbath; and as they went His disciples began (Q)to pluck the heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees said to Him, “Look, why do they do what is (R)not lawful on the Sabbath?”

25 But He said to them, “Have you never read (S)what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26 how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, (T)which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”

27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the (U)Sabbath. 28 Therefore (V)the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

27 So he answered and said, (A)‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and (B)‘your neighbor as yourself.’

28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and (C)you will live.”

29 But he, wanting to (D)justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among [a]thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, (E)he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain (F)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had (G)compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, [b]when he departed, he took out two (H)denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”

37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, (I)“Go and do likewise.”
