Revelation 12

The Woman, Israel

12 A great ^(A)sign appeared ^(B)in heaven: ^(C)a woman ^(D)clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; ²and she was pregnant and she *^(E)cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan

³Then ^(F)another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red ^(G)dragon having ^(H)seven heads and ^(I)ten horns, and on his heads were ^(J)seven crowns. ⁴And his tail *swept away a ^(K)third of the stars of heaven and ^(L)hurled them to the earth. And the ^(M)dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth ^(N)he might devour her Child.

The Male Child, Christ

⁵And ^(O)she gave birth to a Son, a male, who is going to ^[a]^(P)rule all the ^[b]nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was ^(Q)caught up to God and to His throne. ⁶Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she *had a place prepared by God, so that there ^[c]she would be nourished for ^(R)1,260 days.

The Angel, Michael

⁷And there was war in heaven, ^(S)Michael and his angels waging war with the ^(T)dragon. The dragon and ^(U)his angels waged war, ⁸and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. ⁹And the great ^(V)dragon was thrown down, the ^(W)serpent of old who is called the devil and ^(X)Satan, who ^(Y)deceives the whole ^[d]world; he was ^(Z)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. ¹⁰Then I heard ^(AA)a loud voice in heaven, saying,

“Now the ^(AB)salvation, and the power, and the ^(AC)kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the ^(AD)accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night. ¹¹And they ^(AE)overcame him because of ^(AF)the blood of the Lamb and because of ^(AG)the word of their testimony, and they ^(AH)did not love their life even ^[e]when faced with death. ¹²For this reason, ^(AI)rejoice, you heavens and ^(AJ)you who dwell in them. ^(AK)Woe to the earth and the sea, because ^(AL)the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only ^(AM)a short time.”

¹³And when the ^(AN)dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted ^(AO)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. ¹⁴But the ^(AP)two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly ^(AQ)into the wilderness to her place, where she *was nourished for ^(AR)a time, times, and half a time, away from the presence of the serpent. ¹⁵And the ^(AS)serpent hurled water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. ¹⁶^[f]But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon had hurled out of his mouth. ¹⁷So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to ^(AT)make war with the rest of her ^[g]^(AU)children, who ^(AV)keep the commandments of God and ^(AW)hold to the testimony of Jesus.

Israel Invoked to Praise the Lord.

149 ^[a]Praise ^[b]the Lord!
Sing a ^(A)new song to the Lord,
And His praise ^(B)in the congregation of the godly ones.
²Israel shall be joyful in ^(C)his Maker;
The sons of Zion shall rejoice in their ^(D)King.
³They shall praise His name with ^(E)dancing;
They shall sing praises to Him with ^(F)tambourine and lyre.
⁴For the Lord ^(G)takes pleasure in His people;
He will ^(H)glorify the lowly with salvation.

⁵The ^(I)godly ones shall be jubilant in glory;
They shall ^(J)sing for joy on their beds.
⁶The ^(K)high praises of God shall be in their ^[c]mouths,
And a ^(L)two-edged ^(M)sword in their hands,
⁷To ^(N)execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishment on the peoples,
⁸To bind their kings ^(O)with chains,
And their ^(P)dignitaries with shackles of iron,
⁹To ^(Q)execute against them the judgment written.
This is an ^(R)honor for all His godly ones.

God’s Indictment of His People

6 Hear now what the Lord is saying,
“Arise, plead your case ^[a]before the mountains,
And let the hills hear your voice.
²Listen, you mountains, to the indictment by the Lord,
And you enduring ^(A)foundations of the earth,
Because the ^(B)Lord has a case against His people;
And He will dispute with Israel.
³^(C)My people, ^(D)what have I done to you,
And ^(E)how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
⁴Indeed, I ^(F)brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I ^(G)redeemed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you ^(H)Moses, Aaron, and ^(I)Miriam.
⁵My people, remember now
What ^(J)Balak king of Moab planned
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And what happened from ^(K)Shittim to ^(L)Gilgal,
^[b]So that you might know the ^(M)righteous acts of the Lord.”

What God Requires of Mankind

⁶^(N)With what shall I come to the Lord
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with ^(O)burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
⁷Does the Lord take pleasure in ^(P)thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of ^[c]oil?
Shall I give Him my ^(Q)firstborn for my wrongdoings,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
⁸He has ^(R)told you, mortal one, what is good;
And ^(S)what does the Lord require of you
But to ^(T)do justice, to ^(U)love ^[d]kindness,
And to walk ^[e]^(V)humbly with your God?

⁹The voice of the Lord will call to the city—
And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:
“^[f]Hear, you tribe. Who has designated ^[g]its time?
¹⁰Is there still a person in the wicked house,
Along with treasures of ^(W)wickedness,
And a ^[h]^(X)short measure that is cursed?
¹¹Can I justify dishonest ^(Y)balances,
And a bag of fraudulent weights?
¹²For the rich people of ^[i]the city are full of ^(Z)violence,
Her residents speak ^(AA)lies,
And their ^(AB)tongue is deceitful in their mouth.
¹³So also I will make you ^(AC)sick, striking you down,
^(AD)Making you desolate because of your sins.
¹⁴You will eat, but you will ^(AE)not be satisfied,
And your filth will be in your midst.
You will try to remove valuables for safekeeping,
But you will ^(AF)not save it all,
And what you do save I will turn over to the sword.
¹⁵You will sow but you will ^(AG)not harvest.
You will tread the olive press but will not anoint yourself with oil;
And tread out sweet wine, but you will ^(AH)not drink any wine.
¹⁶The statutes of ^(AI)Omri
And every work of the house of ^(AJ)Ahab are maintained,
And you ^(AK)walk by their plans.
Therefore I will give you up for ^(AL)destruction,
And ^[j]your inhabitants for ^[k]^(AM)derision,
And you will suffer the ^(AN)taunting of My people.”

The Prophet Acknowledges Injustice

7 Woe to me! For I am
Like harvests of summer fruit, like gleanings of ^(AO)grapes.
There is not a cluster of grapes left to eat,
Nor an ^(AP)early fig, which ^[l]I crave.
²The ^[m]godly person has ^(AQ)perished from the land,
And there is no upright person among mankind.
All of them lie in wait for ^(AR)bloodshed;
Each of them hunts the other with a ^(AS)net.
³As for evil, both hands do it ^(AT)well.
The leader asks for a ^(AU)bribe, also the judge,
And the great one speaks the capricious desire of his soul;
So they plot it together.
⁴The best of them is like a ^(AV)thorn bush,
The most upright like a ^(AW)thorn hedge.
The day ^[n]when you post your watchmen,
Your ^(AX)punishment is coming.
Then their ^(AY)confusion will occur.
⁵Do not ^(AZ)trust in a neighbor;
Do not have confidence in a close friend.
Guard ^[o]your lips
From her who lies ^[p]in your arms.
⁶For ^(BA)son disavows father,
Daughter rises up against her mother,
Daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
^(BB)A person’s enemies are the people of his own household.

God Is the Source of Salvation and Light

⁷But as for me, I will ^(BC)be on the watch for the Lord;
I will ^(BD)wait for the God of my salvation.
My ^(BE)God will hear me.
⁸^(BF)Do not rejoice over me, ^(BG)enemy of mine.
Though I fall I will ^(BH)rise;
Though I live in darkness, the Lord is a ^(BI)light for me.

⁹I will endure the rage of the Lord
Because I have sinned against Him,
Until He ^(BJ)pleads my case and executes justice for me.
He will bring me out to the ^(BK)light,
And I will look at His ^[q]^(BL)righteousness.
¹⁰Then my enemy will see,
And shame will cover her who ^(BM)said to me,
“Where is the Lord your God?”
My eyes will look at her;
^[r]At that time she will ^[s]be ^(BN)trampled down
Like mud of the streets.
¹¹It will be a day for ^(BO)building your walls.
On that day your boundary will be extended.
¹²It will be a day when ^[t]they will ^(BP)come to you
From Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
From Egypt even to the Euphrates River,
Even from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
¹³And the earth will become a ^(BQ)wasteland because of her inhabitants,
On account of the ^(BR)fruit of their deeds.

¹⁴^(BS)Shepherd Your people with Your ^(BT)scepter,
The flock of Your ^[u]possession
Which lives by itself in the woodland,
In the midst of ^[v]a fruitful field.
Let them feed in ^(BU)Bashan and Gilead
^(BV)As in the days of old.
¹⁵“As in the days when you went out from the land of Egypt,
I will show ^[w]^(BW)you miracles.”
¹⁶Nations ^(BX)will see and be ashamed
Of all their might.
They will ^(BY)put their hand on their mouth,
Their ears will be deaf.
¹⁷They will ^(BZ)lick up dust like a snake,
Like ^[x]^(CA)reptiles of the earth.
They will come ^(CB)trembling out of their ^[y]fortresses;
To the Lord our God they will come in ^(CC)trepidation,
And they will be afraid of You.
¹⁸Who is a God like You, who ^(CD)pardons wrongdoing
And passes over a rebellious act of the ^(CE)remnant of His ^[z]possession?
He does not ^(CF)retain His anger forever,
Because He ^(CG)delights in mercy.
¹⁹He will again take pity on us;
^(CH)He will trample on our wrongdoings.
Yes, You will ^(CI)cast all ^[aa]their sins
Into the depths of the sea.
²⁰You will give ^[ab]^(CJ)truth to Jacob
And favor to Abraham,
Which You ^(CK)swore to our forefathers
From the days of old.

God Is Awesome

1 The ^(A)pronouncement of ^(B)Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite:

²A ^(C)jealous and avenging God is the Lord;
The Lord is ^(D)avenging and ^[a]wrathful.
The Lord takes ^(E)vengeance on His adversaries,
And He reserves wrath for His enemies.
³The Lord is ^(F)slow to anger and great in power,
And the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished.
In the ^(G)gale and the storm is His way,
And ^(H)clouds are the dust beneath His feet.
⁴He ^(I)rebukes the sea and dries it up;
He dries up all the rivers.
^(J)Bashan and Carmel wither,
The blossoms of Lebanon wither.
⁵Mountains ^(K)quake because of Him,
And the hills ^(L)come apart;
Indeed the earth is ^(M)upheaved by His presence,
The ^(N)world and all the inhabitants in it.
⁶^(O)Who can stand before His indignation?
Who can endure the ^(P)burning of His anger?
His ^(Q)wrath gushes forth like fire,
And the ^(R)rocks are broken up by Him.
⁷The Lord is ^(S)good,
A stronghold in the day of trouble,
And ^(T)He knows those who take refuge in Him.
⁸But with an ^(U)overflowing flood
He will make a complete end of ^[b]its site,
And will pursue His enemies into ^(V)darkness.

⁹Whatever you ^(W)devise against the Lord,
He will make a ^(X)complete end of it.
Distress will not rise up twice.
¹⁰Like tangled ^(Y)thorns,
And like those who are ^(Z)drunken with their drink,
They are ^(AA)consumed
Like stubble completely dried up.
¹¹From you has gone out
One who ^(AB)plotted evil against the Lord,
A ^[c]^(AC)wicked counselor.

¹²This is what the Lord says:

“Though they are at full strength and so they are many,
So also they will be ^(AD)cut off and pass away.
Though I have afflicted you,
I will afflict you ^(AE)no longer.
¹³So now, I will ^(AF)break his yoke from upon you,
And I will tear your shackles to pieces.”

¹⁴The Lord has issued a command concerning ^[d]you:
“^[e]Your name will ^(AG)no longer be perpetuated.
I will eliminate the ^(AH)carved image and the cast metal image
From the house of your gods.
I will prepare your ^(AI)grave,
For you are contemptible.”

¹⁵^[f]Behold, ^(AJ)on the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news,
Who announces peace!
^(AK)Celebrate your feasts, Judah,
Pay your vows.
For ^(AL)never again will the ^[g]wicked one pass through you;
He is ^(AM)eliminated completely.
