To the Church in Philadelphia

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(A) write:

These are the words of him who is holy(B) and true,(C) who holds the key of David.(D) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds.(E) See, I have placed before you an open door(F) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.(G) I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,(H) who claim to be Jews though they are not,(I) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet(J) and acknowledge that I have loved you.(K) 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you(L) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world(M) to test(N) the inhabitants of the earth.(O)

11 I am coming soon.(P) Hold on to what you have,(Q) so that no one will take your crown.(R) 12 The one who is victorious(S) I will make a pillar(T) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God(U) and the name of the city of my God,(V) the new Jerusalem,(W) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear(X) what the Spirit says to the churches.

The Lord stripped away the defenses of Judah,
and you looked in that day(A)
to the weapons(B) in the Palace of the Forest.(C)
You saw that the walls of the City of David
    were broken through(D) in many places;
you stored up water
    in the Lower Pool.(E)
10 You counted the buildings in Jerusalem
and tore down houses(F) to strengthen the wall.(G)
11 You built a reservoir between the two walls(H)
for the water of the Old Pool,(I)
but you did not look to the One who made it,
or have regard(J) for the One who planned(K) it long ago.

12 The Lord, the Lord Almighty,
    called you on that day(L)
to weep(M) and to wail,
to tear out your hair(N) and put on sackcloth.(O)
13 But see, there is joy and revelry,(P)
slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,
eating of meat and drinking of wine!(Q)
“Let us eat and drink,” you say,
    “for tomorrow we die!”(R)

14 The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing:(S) “Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned(T) for,” says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

15 This is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:

“Go, say to this steward,
    to Shebna(U) the palace(V) administrator:(W)
16 What are you doing here and who gave you permission
to cut out a grave(X) for yourself(Y) here,
hewing your grave on the height
and chiseling your resting place in the rock?

17 “Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you
and hurl(Z) you away, you mighty man.
18 He will roll you up tightly like a ball
and throw(AA) you into a large country.
There you will die
and there the chariots(AB) you were so proud of
will become a disgrace to your master’s house.
19 I will depose you from your office,
and you will be ousted(AC) from your position.(AD)

20 “In that day(AE) I will summon my servant,(AF) Eliakim(AG) son of Hilkiah. 21 I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash(AH) around him and hand your authority(AI) over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. 22 I will place on his shoulder(AJ) the key(AK) to the house of David;(AL) what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.(AM) 23 I will drive him like a peg(AN) into a firm place;(AO) he will become a seat[a] of honor(AP) for the house of his father. 24 All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots—all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars.

25 “In that day,(AQ)” declares the Lord Almighty, “the peg(AR) driven into the firm place will give way; it will be sheared off and will fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut down.” The Lord has spoken.(AS)
