Psalm 81

A Call to Obedience

For the choir director: on the Gittith. Of Asaph.(A)

Sing for joy to God our strength;
shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.(B)
Lift up a song—play the tambourine,
the melodious lyre, and the harp.(C)
Blow the ram’s horn on the day of our feasts[a]
during the new moon(D)
and during the full moon.
For this is a statute for Israel,
an ordinance of the God of Jacob.(E)
He set it up as a decree for Joseph
when he went throughout[b] the land of Egypt.(F)
I heard an unfamiliar language:
“I relieved his shoulder from the burden;
his hands were freed from carrying the basket.(G)
You called out in distress, and I rescued you;
I answered you from the thundercloud.(H)
I tested you at the Waters of Meribah.(I)Selah
Listen, my people, and I will admonish you.
Israel, if you would only listen to me!(J)
There must not be a strange god among you;
you must not bow down to a foreign god.(K)
10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up from the land of Egypt.(L)
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.(M)

11 “But my people did not listen to my voice;
Israel did not obey me.(N)
12 So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts
to follow their own plans.(O)
13 If only my people would listen to me
and Israel would follow my ways,(P)
14 I would quickly subdue their enemies
and turn my hand against their foes.”(Q)
15 Those who hate the Lord
would cower to him;(R)
their doom would last forever.(S)
16 But he would feed Israel[c] with the best wheat.
“I would satisfy you with honey from the rock.”(T)

Psalm 82

A Plea for Righteous Judgment

A psalm of Asaph.(U)

God stands in the divine assembly;
he pronounces judgment among the gods:[d](V)
“How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(W)Selah
Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(X)
Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked.”(Y)

They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(Z)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(AA)

I said, “You are gods;(AB)
you are all sons of the Most High.(AC)
However, you will die like humans
and fall like any other ruler.”(AD)

Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to you.(AE)

Psalm 83

Prayer against Enemies

A song. A psalm of Asaph.(AF)

God, do not keep silent.
Do not be deaf, God; do not be quiet.(AG)
See how your enemies make an uproar;
those who hate you have acted arrogantly.[e](AH)
They devise clever schemes against your people;
they conspire against your treasured ones.(AI)
They say, “Come, let’s wipe them out as a nation
so that Israel’s name will no longer be remembered.”(AJ)
For they have conspired with one mind;
they form an alliance[f] against you(AK)
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,(AL)
Moab and the Hagrites,(AM)
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,(AN)
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre.(AO)
Even Assyria has joined them;
they lend support[g] to the sons of Lot.[h](AP)Selah

Deal with them as you did with Midian,(AQ)
as you did with Sisera
and Jabin at the Kishon River.(AR)
10 They were destroyed at En-dor;
they became manure for the ground.(AS)
11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,(AT)
and all their tribal leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,(AU)
12 who said, “Let’s seize God’s pastures for ourselves.”(AV)

13 Make them like tumbleweed, my God,
like straw before the wind.(AW)
14 As fire burns a forest,
as a flame blazes through mountains,(AX)
15 so pursue them with your tempest
and terrify them with your storm.(AY)
16 Cover their faces with shame
so that they will seek your name, Lord.(AZ)
17 Let them be put to shame and terrified forever;
let them perish in disgrace.(BA)
18 May they know that you alone—
whose name is the Lord
are the Most High over the whole earth.(BB)

19 Then you will say,(A) “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 True enough; they were broken off because of unbelief, but you stand by faith.(B) Do not be arrogant, but beware,[a](C) 21 because if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either. 22 Therefore, consider God’s kindness and severity: severity toward those who have fallen but God’s kindness(D) toward you—if you remain in his kindness.(E) Otherwise you too will be cut off.(F) 23 And even they, if they do not remain in unbelief,(G) will be grafted in, because God has the power to graft them in again. 24 For if you were cut off from your native wild olive tree and against nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these—the natural branches—be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 I don’t want you to be ignorant(H) of this mystery,(I) brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited:(J) A partial hardening has come upon Israel(K) until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.(L) 26 And in this way all[b] Israel will be saved, as it is written,

The Deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this will be my covenant with them[c](M)
when I take away their sins.[d](N)

28 Regarding the gospel, they are enemies for your advantage,(O) but regarding election, they are loved because of the patriarchs,(P) 29 since God’s gracious gifts and calling(Q) are irrevocable.[e](R) 30 As you once disobeyed God but now have received mercy through their disobedience, 31 so they too have now disobeyed, resulting in mercy to you, so that they also may now[f] receive mercy. 32 For God has imprisoned all in disobedience(S) so that he may have mercy on all.

A Hymn of Praise

33 Oh, the depth of the riches(T)
and the wisdom and the knowledge of God!(U)
How unsearchable his judgments(V)
and untraceable his ways!
34 For who has known the mind of the Lord?(W)
Or who has been his counselor?
35 And who has ever given to God,
that he should be repaid?[g](X)
36 For from him and through him
and to him are all things.(Y)
To him be the glory forever. Amen.
