Ascribe to the Lord Glory

A Psalm of David.

29 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
    (A)ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in (B)the splendor of holiness.[b]

The voice of the Lord is over (C)the waters;
    the God of glory (D)thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is (E)powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks (F)the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to (G)skip like a calf,
    and (H)Sirion like a young (I)wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of (J)Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes (K)the deer give birth[c]
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over (L)the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned (M)as king forever.
11 May the Lord give (N)strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless[d] his people with (O)peace!

Joy Comes with the Morning

A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of (P)the temple.

30 I will (Q)extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
    and have not let my foes (R)rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I (S)cried to you for help,
    and you have (T)healed me.
O Lord, you have brought up my soul from (U)Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who (V)go down to the pit.[e]

Sing praises to the Lord, O you (W)his saints,
    and (X)give thanks to his holy name.[f]
(Y)For his anger is but for a moment,
    and (Z)his favor is for a lifetime.[g]
(AA)Weeping may tarry for the night,
    but (AB)joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my (AC)prosperity,
    “I shall never be (AD)moved.”
By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my (AE)mountain stand strong;
you (AF)hid your face;
    I was (AG)dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cry,
    and (AH)to the Lord I plead for mercy:
“What profit is there in my death,[h]
    if I go down to the pit?[i]
Will (AI)the dust praise you?
    Will it tell of your faithfulness?
10 (AJ)Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!”

11 You have turned for me my mourning into (AK)dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
12 that my (AL)glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

31 (AM)In you, O Lord, do I (AN)take refuge;
    (AO)let me never be put to shame;
    in your (AP)righteousness deliver me!
Incline your ear to me;
    rescue me speedily!
Be (AQ)a rock of (AR)refuge for me,
    a strong fortress to save me!

For you are my rock and my fortress;
    and for your (AS)name's sake you lead me and guide me;
you (AT)take me out of (AU)the net they have hidden for me,
    for you are my (AV)refuge.
(AW)Into your hand I commit my spirit;
    you have redeemed me, O Lord, (AX)faithful God.

I (AY)hate[j] those who pay (AZ)regard to worthless (BA)idols,
    but I trust in the Lord.
I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,
    because you have seen my affliction;
    you have (BB)known the distress of my soul,
and you have not (BC)delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
    you have set my feet in (BD)a broad place.

Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am (BE)in distress;
    (BF)my eye is wasted from grief;
    my soul and my body also.
10 For my life is spent with sorrow,
    and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
    and (BG)my bones waste away.

11 Because of all my adversaries I have become (BH)a reproach,
    especially to my (BI)neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
    those who see me in the street (BJ)flee from me.
12 I have been (BK)forgotten like one who is dead;
    I have become like (BL)a broken vessel.
13 For I (BM)hear the whispering of many—
    terror on every side!—
(BN)as they scheme together against me,
    as they plot to take my life.

14 But I (BO)trust in you, O Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
15 My (BP)times are in your hand;
    (BQ)rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16 (BR)Make your face shine on your servant;
    save me in your steadfast love!
17 O Lord, (BS)let me not be put to shame,
    for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
    let them go (BT)silently to Sheol.
18 Let the lying lips be mute,
    which (BU)speak (BV)insolently against the righteous
    in pride and contempt.

19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
    which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
    (BW)in the sight of the children of mankind!
20 In (BX)the cover of your presence you hide them
    from the plots of men;
you (BY)store them in your shelter
    from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord,
    for he has wondrously (BZ)shown his steadfast love to me
    when I was in (CA)a besieged city.
22 I had said in my (CB)alarm,[k]
    “I am (CC)cut off from (CD)your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
    when I cried to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all you his (CE)saints!
    The Lord preserves the faithful
    but abundantly (CF)repays the one who acts in pride.
24 (CG)Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
    all you who wait for the Lord!

Blessed Are the Forgiven

A Maskil[l] of David.

32 (CH)Blessed is the one whose (CI)transgression is forgiven,
    whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man against whom the Lord (CJ)counts no iniquity,
    and in whose spirit (CK)there is no deceit.

For when I kept silent, my (CL)bones wasted away
    through my (CM)groaning all day long.
For day and night your (CN)hand was heavy upon me;
    my strength was dried up[m] as by the heat of summer. Selah

I (CO)acknowledged my sin to you,
    and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I (CP)will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
    and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

Therefore let everyone who is (CQ)godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you (CR)may be found;
surely in the rush of (CS)great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
You are a (CT)hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from (CU)trouble;
    you surround me with (CV)shouts of deliverance. Selah

I will (CW)instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will (CX)counsel you with my eye upon you.
(CY)Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
    which must be curbed with (CZ)bit and bridle,
    or it will not stay near you.

10 (DA)Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
    but steadfast love surrounds the one who (DB)trusts in the Lord.
11 (DC)Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
    and (DD)shout for joy, all you (DE)upright in heart!

The Steadfast Love of the Lord

33 (DF)Shout for joy in the Lord, O you righteous!
    (DG)Praise befits the upright.
Give thanks to the Lord with the (DH)lyre;
    make melody to him with (DI)the harp of (DJ)ten strings!
Sing to him (DK)a new song;
    play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts.

For the word of the Lord is upright,
    and all his work is done in (DL)faithfulness.
He (DM)loves righteousness and justice;
    (DN)the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord.

By (DO)the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
    and by (DP)the breath of his mouth all (DQ)their host.
He gathers the waters of the sea as (DR)a heap;
    he (DS)puts the deeps in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
    let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
For (DT)he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded, and it stood firm.

10 The Lord (DU)brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
    he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
11 (DV)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
    the plans of his heart to all generations.
12 (DW)Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has (DX)chosen as his heritage!

13 The Lord (DY)looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from (DZ)where he sits enthroned he (EA)looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 (EB)The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 (EC)The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.

18 Behold, (ED)the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    (EE)on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may (EF)deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in (EG)famine.

20 Our soul (EH)waits for the Lord;
    he is our (EI)help and (EJ)our shield.
21 For our heart is (EK)glad in him,
    because we (EL)trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

Warning Against Idolatry

10 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[a] that our fathers were all under (A)the cloud, and all (B)passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and (C)all ate the same (D)spiritual food, and (E)all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for (F)they were overthrown[b] in the wilderness.

Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as (G)they did. (H)Do not be idolaters (I)as some of them were; as it is written, (J)“The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” (K)We must not indulge in sexual immorality (L)as some of them did, and (M)twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ[c] to the test, (N)as some of them did and (O)were destroyed by serpents, 10 nor grumble, (P)as some of them did and (Q)were destroyed by (R)the Destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, but (S)they were written down for our instruction, (T)on whom the end of the ages has come. 12 Therefore (U)let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. (V)God is faithful, and (W)he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

14 Therefore, my beloved, (X)flee from idolatry. 15 I speak (Y)as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 (Z)The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? (AA)The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are (AB)one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider (AC)the people of Israel:[d] (AD)are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that (AE)an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice (AF)they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 (AG)You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and (AH)the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and (AI)the table of demons. 22 (AJ)Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? (AK)Are we stronger than he?

Do All to the Glory of God

23 (AL)“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. 24 (AM)Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. 25 (AN)Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 26 For (AO)“the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof.” 27 If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, (AP)eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. 28 But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience— 29 I do not mean (AQ)your conscience, but his. For (AR)why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that (AS)for which I give thanks?

31 So, whether you eat or drink, or (AT)whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 (AU)Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to (AV)the church of God, 33 just as (AW)I try to please everyone in everything I do, (AX)not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.
