Tremble at the Presence of the Lord

114 When ^(A)Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from ^(B)a people of strange language,
²Judah became his ^(C)sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.

³^(D)The sea looked and fled;
^(E)Jordan turned back.
⁴^(F)The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.

⁵What ^(G)ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
⁶O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?

⁷^(H)Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
⁸who turns ^(I)the rock into ^(J)a pool of water,
^(K)the flint into a spring of water.

To Your Name Give Glory

115 ^(L)Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory,
^(M)for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

²Why should the nations say,
^(N)“Where is their God?”
³^(O)Our God is in the heavens;
^(P)he does all that he pleases.

⁴^(Q)Their idols are silver and gold,
    ^(R)the work of human hands.
⁵They have mouths, ^(S)but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
⁶They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
⁷They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
⁸^(T)Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.

⁹O ^(U)Israel,^[a] ^(V)trust in the Lord!
    He is their ^(W)help and their shield.
¹⁰O ^(X)house of Aaron, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and ^(Y)their shield.
¹¹You ^(Z)who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
    He is their help and their shield.

¹²The Lord has remembered us; he will bless us;
    he will bless ^(AA)the house of Israel;
    he will bless ^(AB)the house of Aaron;
¹³he will ^(AC)bless those who fear the Lord,
    ^(AD)both the small and the great.

¹⁴May the Lord ^(AE)give you increase,
you and your children!
¹⁵May ^(AF)you be blessed by the Lord,
^(AG)who made heaven and earth!

¹⁶The heavens are the Lord's heavens,
    but the earth he has given to the children of man.
¹⁷^(AH)The dead do not praise the Lord,
    nor do any who go down into ^(AI)silence.
¹⁸But ^(AJ)we will bless the Lord
    from this time forth and forevermore.

I Love the Lord

116 I ^(AL)love the Lord, because he has ^(AM)heard
    my voice and my pleas for mercy.
²Because he ^(AN)inclined his ear to me,
    therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
³^(AO)The snares of death encompassed me;
    the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
    I suffered distress and anguish.
⁴Then ^(AP)I called on the name of the Lord:
    “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

⁵^(AQ)Gracious is the Lord, and ^(AR)righteous;
    our God is ^(AS)merciful.
⁶The Lord preserves ^(AT)the simple;
    when ^(AU)I was brought low, he saved me.
⁷Return, O my soul, to your ^(AV)rest;
    for the Lord has ^(AW)dealt bountifully with you.

⁸For ^(AX)you have delivered my soul from death,
    my eyes from tears,
    my feet from stumbling;
⁹I will walk before the Lord
    ^(AY)in the land of the living.

¹⁰^(AZ)I believed, ^(BA)even when^[b] I spoke:
“I am greatly afflicted”;
¹¹^(BB)I said in my alarm,
^(BC)“All mankind are liars.”

¹²What shall I ^(BD)render to the Lord
    for all his benefits to me?
¹³I will lift up ^(BE)the cup of salvation
    and ^(BF)call on the name of the Lord,
¹⁴I will ^(BG)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.

¹⁵^(BH)Precious in the sight of the Lord
    is the death of his ^(BI)saints.
¹⁶O Lord, I am your ^(BJ)servant;
    I am your servant, ^(BK)the son of your maidservant.
    You have ^(BL)loosed my bonds.
¹⁷I will ^(BM)offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving
    and ^(BN)call on the name of the Lord.
¹⁸I will ^(BO)pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
¹⁹in ^(BP)the courts of the house of the Lord,
    in your midst, O Jerusalem.
^(BQ)Praise the Lord!

The Lord's Faithfulness Endures Forever

117 ^(BR)Praise the Lord, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
²For ^(BS)great is his steadfast love toward us,
and ^(BT)the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.
^(BU)Praise the Lord!

His Steadfast Love Endures Forever

118 ^(BV)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

²^(BW)Let Israel say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
³^(BX)Let the house of Aaron say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”
⁴^(BY)Let those who fear the Lord say,
    “His steadfast love endures forever.”

⁵^(BZ)Out of my distress I ^(CA)called on the Lord;
    the Lord answered me and set me ^(CB)free.
⁶^(CC)The Lord is on my side; ^(CD)I will not fear.
    What can man do to me?
⁷^(CE)The Lord is on my side as my helper;
    I shall ^(CF)look in triumph on those who hate me.

⁸^(CG)It is better to take refuge in the Lord
^(CH)than to trust in man.
⁹It is better to take refuge in the Lord
^(CI)than to trust in princes.

¹⁰^(CJ)All nations surrounded me;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
¹¹They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
¹²^(CK)They surrounded me like bees;
    they went out like ^(CL)a fire among thorns;
    in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
¹³I was ^(CM)pushed hard,^[c] so that I was falling,
    but the Lord helped me.

¹⁴The Lord is my strength and my song;
    ^(CN)he has become my salvation.
¹⁵Glad songs of salvation
    are in the tents of the righteous:
^(CO)“The right hand of the Lord ^(CP)does valiantly,
¹⁶    the right hand of the Lord exalts,
    the right hand of the Lord ^(CQ)does valiantly!”

¹⁷^(CR)I shall not die, but I shall live,
and ^(CS)recount the deeds of the Lord.
¹⁸The Lord has ^(CT)disciplined me severely,
but he has not given me over to death.

¹⁹^(CU)Open to me the gates of righteousness,
    that I may enter through them
    and give thanks to the Lord.
²⁰This is the gate of the Lord;
    ^(CV)the righteous shall enter through it.
²¹I thank you that ^(CW)you have answered me
    ^(CX)and have become my salvation.
²²^(CY)The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.^[d]
²³This is the Lord's doing;
    it is marvelous in our eyes.
²⁴This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

²⁵Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!

²⁶^(CZ)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
    We ^(DA)bless you from the house of the Lord.
²⁷The Lord is God,
    and he has made ^(DB)his light to shine upon us.
Bind the festal sacrifice with cords,
    up to ^(DC)the horns of the altar!

²⁸You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will ^(DD)extol you.
²⁹^(DE)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Paul and the False Apostles

11 I wish you would bear with me in a little foolishness. Do bear with me! ²For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since ^(A)I betrothed you to one husband, ^(B)to present you ^(C)as a pure virgin to Christ. ³But I am afraid that ^(D)as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts ^(E)will be led astray from a ^(F)sincere and ^(G)pure devotion to Christ. ⁴For if someone comes and ^(H)proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept ^(I)a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough. ⁵Indeed, I consider that ^(J)I am not in the least inferior to these super-apostles. ⁶^(K)Even if I am unskilled in speaking, ^(L)I am not so in knowledge; indeed, in every way ^(M)we have made this plain to you in all things.

⁷Or ^(N)did I commit a sin in humbling myself so that you might be exalted, because ^(O)I preached God's gospel to you free of charge? ⁸I robbed other churches by accepting support from them in order to serve you. ⁹And when I was with you and was ^(P)in need, ^(Q)I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia ^(R)supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain ^(S)from burdening you in any way. ¹⁰^(T)As the truth of Christ is in me, this boasting of mine ^(U)will not be silenced in the regions of Achaia. ¹¹And why? ^(V)Because I do not love you? ^(W)God knows I do!

¹²And what I am doing I will continue to do, ^(X)in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. ¹³For such men are ^(Y)false apostles, ^(Z)deceitful workmen, ^(AA)disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. ¹⁴And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as ^(AB)an angel of light. ¹⁵So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as ^(AC)servants of righteousness. ^(AD)Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Paul's Sufferings as an Apostle

¹⁶I repeat, ^(AE)let no one think me foolish. But even if you do, accept me as a fool, so that I too may boast a little. ¹⁷What I am saying ^(AF)with this boastful confidence, ^(AG)I say not as the Lord would^[a] but as a fool. ¹⁸Since ^(AH)many boast according to the flesh, I too will boast. ¹⁹For you gladly bear with fools, ^(AI)being wise yourselves! ²⁰For you bear it if someone ^(AJ)makes slaves of you, or ^(AK)devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or ^(AL)strikes you in the face. ²¹To my shame, I must say, ^(AM)we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. ²²Are they Hebrews? ^(AN)So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. ²³Are they ^(AO)servants of Christ? ^(AP)I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, ^(AQ)far more imprisonments, ^(AR)with countless beatings, and ^(AS)often near death. ²⁴Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the ^(AT)forty lashes less one. ²⁵Three times I was ^(AU)beaten with rods. ^(AV)Once I was stoned. Three times I ^(AW)was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; ²⁶on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, ^(AX)danger from my own people, ^(AY)danger from Gentiles, ^(AZ)danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; ²⁷^(BA)in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, ^(BB)in hunger and thirst, often without food,^[b] in cold and exposure. ²⁸And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for ^(BC)all the churches. ²⁹^(BD)Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

³⁰^(BE)If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. ³¹^(BF)The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, ^(BG)he who is blessed forever, ^(BH)knows that I am not lying. ³²At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas ^(BI)was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, ³³^(BJ)but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands.
