Psalm 59

Psalm 59^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.^[b] When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house^(A) in order to kill him.

¹Deliver me from my enemies, O God;^(B)
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.^(C)
²Deliver me from evildoers^(D)
and save me from those who are after my blood.^(E)

³See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire^(F) against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
⁴I have done no wrong,^(G) yet they are ready to attack me.^(H)
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!^(I)
⁵You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,^(J)
rouse yourself^(K) to punish all the nations;^(L)
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.^[c]^(M)

⁶They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,^(N)
    and prowl about the city.
⁷See what they spew from their mouths^(O)—
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,^(P)
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”^(Q)
⁸But you laugh at them, Lord;^(R)
    you scoff at all those nations.^(S)

⁹You are my strength,^(T) I watch for you;
you, God, are my fortress,^(U)
¹⁰ my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
¹¹But do not kill them, Lord our shield,^[d]^(V)
    or my people will forget.^(W)
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.^(X)
¹²For the sins of their mouths,^(Y)
    for the words of their lips,^(Z)
    let them be caught in their pride.^(AA)
For the curses and lies they utter,
¹³    consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.^(AB)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.^(AC)

¹⁴They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
¹⁵They wander about for food^(AD)
    and howl if not satisfied.
¹⁶But I will sing^(AE) of your strength,^(AF)
    in the morning^(AG) I will sing of your love;^(AH)
for you are my fortress,^(AI)
    my refuge in times of trouble.^(AJ)

¹⁷You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.^(AK)

Interlude: Where Wisdom Is Found

28 There is a mine for silver
    and a place where gold is refined.^(A)
²Iron is taken from the earth,
    and copper is smelted from ore.^(B)
³Mortals put an end to the darkness;^(C)
    they search out the farthest recesses
    for ore in the blackest darkness.^(D)
⁴Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,^(E)
    in places untouched by human feet;
    far from other people they dangle and sway.
⁵The earth, from which food comes,^(F)
    is transformed below as by fire;
⁶lapis lazuli^(G) comes from its rocks,
    and its dust contains nuggets of gold.^(H)
⁷No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
    no falcon’s eye has seen it.^(I)
⁸Proud beasts^(J) do not set foot on it,
    and no lion prowls there.^(K)
⁹People assault the flinty rock^(L) with their hands
    and lay bare the roots of the mountains.^(M)
¹⁰They tunnel through the rock;^(N)
    their eyes see all its treasures.^(O)
¹¹They search^[a] the sources of the rivers^(P)
    and bring hidden things^(Q) to light.

¹²But where can wisdom be found?^(R)
    Where does understanding dwell?^(S)
¹³No mortal comprehends its worth;^(T)
    it cannot be found in the land of the living.^(U)
¹⁴The deep^(V) says, “It is not in me”;
    the sea^(W) says, “It is not with me.”
¹⁵It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
    nor can its price be weighed out in silver.^(X)
¹⁶It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,^(Y)
    with precious onyx or lapis lazuli.^(Z)
¹⁷Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,^(AA)
    nor can it be had for jewels of gold.^(AB)
¹⁸Coral^(AC) and jasper^(AD) are not worthy of mention;
    the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.^(AE)
¹⁹The topaz^(AF) of Cush^(AG) cannot compare with it;
    it cannot be bought with pure gold.^(AH)

²⁰Where then does wisdom come from?
    Where does understanding dwell?^(AI)
²¹It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
    concealed even from the birds in the sky.^(AJ)
²²Destruction^[b]^(AK) and Death^(AL) say,
    “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”
²³God understands the way to it
    and he alone^(AM) knows where it dwells,^(AN)
²⁴for he views the ends of the earth^(AO)
    and sees everything under the heavens.^(AP)
²⁵When he established the force of the wind
    and measured out the waters,^(AQ)
²⁶when he made a decree for the rain^(AR)
    and a path for the thunderstorm,^(AS)
²⁷then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
    he confirmed it and tested it.^(AT)
²⁸And he said to the human race,
    “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
    and to shun evil^(AU) is understanding.”^(AV)

Acts 16:25-40

New International Version

²⁵About midnight^(A) Paul and Silas^(B) were praying and singing hymns^(C) to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. ²⁶Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.^(D) At once all the prison doors flew open,^(E) and everyone’s chains came loose.^(F) ²⁷The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.^(G) ²⁸But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We are all here!”

²⁹The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.^(H) ³⁰He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”^(I)

³¹They replied, “Believe^(J) in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved^(K)—you and your household.”^(L) ³²Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. ³³At that hour of the night^(M) the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized.^(N) ³⁴The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he^(O) was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.

³⁵When it was daylight, the magistrates sent their officers to the jailer with the order: “Release those men.” ³⁶The jailer^(P) told Paul, “The magistrates have ordered that you and Silas be released. Now you can leave. Go in peace.”^(Q)

³⁷But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens,^(R) and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”

³⁸The officers reported this to the magistrates, and when they heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed.^(S) ³⁹They came to appease them and escorted them from the prison, requesting them to leave the city.^(T) ⁴⁰After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house,^(U) where they met with the brothers and sisters^(V) and encouraged them. Then they left.

John 12:27-36

²⁷“Now my soul is troubled,^(A) and what shall I say? ‘Father,^(B) save me from this hour’?^(C) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. ²⁸Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,^(D) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” ²⁹The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

³⁰Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,^(E) not mine. ³¹Now is the time for judgment on this world;^(F) now the prince of this world^(G) will be driven out. ³²And I, when I am lifted up^[a] from the earth,^(H) will draw all people to myself.”^(I) ³³He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.^(J)

³⁴The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law^(K) that the Messiah will remain forever,^(L) so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man^(M) must be lifted up’?^(N) Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”

³⁵Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light^(O) just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light,^(P) before darkness overtakes you.^(Q) Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. ³⁶Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”^(R) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.^(S)
