Psalm 116

¹I love the Lord,^(A) for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry^(B) for mercy.^(C)
²Because he turned his ear^(D) to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.

³The cords of death^(E) entangled me,
    the anguish of the grave came over me;
    I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
⁴Then I called on the name^(F) of the Lord:
    “Lord, save me!^(G)”

Psalm 116:12-19

New International Version

¹²What shall I return to the Lord
for all his goodness^(A) to me?

¹³I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name^(B) of the Lord.
¹⁴I will fulfill my vows^(C) to the Lord
in the presence of all his people.

¹⁵Precious in the sight^(D) of the Lord
    is the death of his faithful servants.^(E)
¹⁶Truly I am your servant, Lord;^(F)
    I serve you just as my mother did;^(G)
    you have freed me from my chains.^(H)

¹⁷I will sacrifice a thank offering^(I) to you
    and call on the name of the Lord.
¹⁸I will fulfill my vows^(J) to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people,
¹⁹in the courts^(K) of the house of the Lord—
    in your midst, Jerusalem.^(L)

Praise to the Lord

25 Lord, you are my God;^(A)
    I will exalt you and praise your name,^(B)
for in perfect faithfulness^(C)
    you have done wonderful things,^(D)
    things planned^(E) long ago.
²You have made the city a heap of rubble,^(F)
    the fortified^(G) town a ruin,^(H)
the foreigners’ stronghold^(I) a city no more;
    it will never be rebuilt.^(J)
³Therefore strong peoples will honor you;^(K)
    cities of ruthless^(L) nations will revere you.
⁴You have been a refuge^(M) for the poor,^(N)
    a refuge for the needy^(O) in their distress,
a shelter from the storm^(P)
    and a shade from the heat.
For the breath of the ruthless^(Q)
    is like a storm driving against a wall
⁵    and like the heat of the desert.
You silence^(R) the uproar of foreigners;^(S)
    as heat is reduced by the shadow of a cloud,
    so the song of the ruthless^(T) is stilled.

⁸Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him^(A) and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, ⁹for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.^(B)

¹⁰Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke^(C) of the grace that was to come to you,^(D) searched intently and with the greatest care,^(E) ¹¹trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ^(F) in them was pointing when he predicted^(G) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. ¹²It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,^(H) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you^(I) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.^(J) Even angels long to look into these things.
