1 ^(A)An oracle concerning ^(B)Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.

God's Wrath Against Nineveh

²^(C)The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
    the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
^(D)the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
    and ^(E)keeps wrath for his enemies.
³^(F)The Lord is slow to anger and ^(G)great in power,
    and ^(H)the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
^(I)His way is in whirlwind and storm,
    and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
⁴^(J)He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
    he dries up all the rivers;
^(K)Bashan and ^(L)Carmel wither;
    the bloom of ^(M)Lebanon withers.
⁵^(N)The mountains quake before him;
    ^(O)the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
    ^(P)the world and all who dwell in it.

⁶^(Q)Who can stand before his indignation?
    Who can endure the heat of his anger?
His wrath ^(R)is poured out like fire,
    and ^(S)the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
⁷^(T)The Lord is good,
    ^(U)a stronghold in the day of trouble;
^(V)he knows those who take refuge in him.
⁸    But ^(W)with an overflowing flood
he will make a complete end of the adversaries,^[a]
    and ^(X)will pursue his enemies into darkness.
⁹What ^(Y)do you plot against the Lord?
    ^(Z)He will make a complete end;
    trouble will not rise up a second time.
¹⁰For they are ^(AA)like entangled thorns,
    like drunkards as they drink;
    ^(AB)they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
¹¹From you came one
    ^(AC)who plotted evil against the Lord,
    a worthless counselor.

¹²Thus says the Lord,
“Though they are at full strength and many,
    ^(AD)they will be cut down and pass away.
^(AE)Though I have afflicted you,
    I will afflict you no more.
¹³And now ^(AF)I will break his yoke from off you
    and will burst your bonds apart.”

¹⁴The Lord has given commandment about you:
^(AG)“No more shall your name be perpetuated;
from ^(AH)the house of your gods I will cut off
the carved image and the metal image.
^(AI)I will make your grave, ^(AJ)for you are vile.”

¹⁵^[b] ^(AK)Behold, upon the mountains, ^(AL)the feet of him
    who brings good news,
    who publishes peace!
^(AM)Keep your feasts, O Judah;
    ^(AN)fulfill your vows,
^(AO)for never again shall the worthless pass through you;
    he is utterly cut off.

The Destruction of Nineveh

2 ^(AP)The scatterer has come up against you.
    ^(AQ)Man the ramparts;
    watch the road;
dress for battle;^[c]
    collect all your strength.

²For ^(AR)the Lord is restoring the majesty of Jacob
as the majesty of Israel,
for plunderers have plundered them
and ^(AS)ruined their branches.

³The shield of his mighty men is red;
    ^(AT)his soldiers are clothed in scarlet.
The chariots come with flashing metal
    on the day he musters them;
    the cypress spears are brandished.
⁴^(AU)The chariots race madly through the streets;
    they rush to and fro through the squares;
they gleam like torches;
    they dart like lightning.
⁵He remembers ^(AV)his officers;
    ^(AW)they stumble as they go,
they hasten to the wall;
    the siege tower^[d] is set up.
⁶^(AX)The river gates are opened;
    the palace ^(AY)melts away;
⁷its mistress^[e] is ^(AZ)stripped;^[f] she is carried off,
    her slave girls ^(BA)lamenting,
moaning like doves
    and beating their breasts.
⁸^(BB)Nineveh is like a pool
    whose waters run away.^[g]
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
    but ^(BC)none turns back.
⁹Plunder the silver,
    plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
    or of the wealth of all precious things.

¹⁰^(BD)Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
    ^(BE)Hearts melt and ^(BF)knees tremble;
^(BG)anguish is in all loins;
    ^(BH)all faces grow pale!
¹¹Where is the lions' den,
    the feeding place of ^(BI)the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
    where his cubs were, with ^(BJ)none to disturb?
¹²^(BK)The lion tore enough for his cubs
    and ^(BL)strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
    and his dens with torn flesh.

¹³^(BM)Behold, I am against you, declares the Lord of hosts, and ^(BN)I will burn your^[h] chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and ^(BO)the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.

Woe to Nineveh

3 Woe to ^(BP)the bloody city,
    all full of lies and plunder—
    ^(BQ)no end to the prey!
²The crack of the whip, and ^(BR)rumble of the wheel,
    ^(BS)galloping horse and ^(BT)bounding chariot!
³Horsemen charging,
    flashing sword and ^(BU)glittering spear,
^(BV)hosts of slain,
    heaps of corpses,
dead bodies without end—
    they stumble over the bodies!
⁴And all for the countless whorings of the ^(BW)prostitute,
    ^(BX)graceful and of deadly charms,
who betrays nations with her whorings,
    and peoples with her charms.

⁵^(BY)Behold, I am against you,
    declares the Lord of hosts,
    and ^(BZ)will lift up your skirts over your face;
and I will make nations look at ^(CA)your nakedness
    and kingdoms at your shame.
⁶I will throw filth at you
    and ^(CB)treat you with contempt
    and make you ^(CC)a spectacle.
⁷And all who look at you ^(CD)will shrink from you and say,
“Wasted is ^(CE)Nineveh; ^(CF)who will grieve for her?”
    ^(CG)Where shall I seek comforters for you?

⁸^(CH)Are you better than ^(CI)Thebes^[i]
    that sat ^(CJ)by the Nile,
with water around her,
    her rampart a sea,
    and water her wall?
⁹^(CK)Cush was her strength;
    Egypt too, and that without limit;
    ^(CL)Put and the ^(CM)Libyans were her^[j] helpers.

¹⁰^(CN)Yet she became an exile;
    she went into captivity;
^(CO)her infants were dashed in pieces
    at the head of every street;
for her honored men ^(CP)lots were cast,
    ^(CQ)and all her great men were bound in chains.
¹¹^(CR)You also will be drunken;
    you will go into hiding;
^(CS)you will seek a refuge from the enemy.
¹²All your fortresses are ^(CT)like fig trees
    with first-ripe figs—
if shaken they fall
    into the mouth of the eater.
¹³Behold, your troops
    ^(CU)are women in your midst.
The gates of your land
    are wide open to your enemies;
    fire has devoured your bars.

¹⁴^(CV)Draw water for the siege;
    ^(CW)strengthen your forts;
go into the clay;
    tread the mortar;
    take hold of the brick mold!
¹⁵There will the fire devour you;
    the sword will cut you off.
    It will ^(CX)devour you ^(CY)like the locust.
Multiply yourselves ^(CZ)like the locust;
    multiply ^(DA)like the grasshopper!
¹⁶You increased ^(DB)your merchants
    more than the stars of the heavens.
    ^(DC)The locust spreads its wings and flies away.

¹⁷Your ^(DD)princes are ^(DE)like grasshoppers,
    ^(DF)your scribes^[k] like clouds of locusts
settling on the fences
    in a day of cold—
when the sun rises, they fly away;
    no one knows where they are.

¹⁸Your shepherds ^(DG)are asleep,
    O king of Assyria;
    ^(DH)your nobles slumber.
Your people ^(DI)are scattered on the mountains
    with none to gather them.
¹⁹There is no easing your hurt;
    ^(DJ)your wound is grievous.
All who hear the news about you
    ^(DK)clap their hands over you.
For ^(DL)upon whom has not come
    your unceasing evil?

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

5 After this there was a ^(A)feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

²Now there is in Jerusalem by ^(B)the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic^[a] called Bethesda,^[b] which has five roofed colonnades. ³In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and ^(C)paralyzed.^[c] ⁵One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. ⁶When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” ⁷The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” ⁸Jesus said to him, ^(D)“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” ⁹^(E)And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

^(F)Now that day was the Sabbath. ¹⁰So the Jews^[d] said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and ^(G)it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” ¹¹But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” ¹²They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” ¹³Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for ^(H)Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. ¹⁴Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! ^(I)Sin no more, ^(J)that nothing worse may happen to you.” ¹⁵The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. ¹⁶And this was why the Jews ^(K)were persecuting Jesus, ^(L)because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. ¹⁷But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

¹⁸This was why the Jews ^(M)were seeking all the more to kill him, ^(N)because not only was he ^(O)breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God ^(P)his own Father, ^(Q)making himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

¹⁹So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(R)the Son ^(S)can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father^[e] does, that the Son does likewise. ²⁰For ^(T)the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And ^(U)greater works than these will he show him, so that ^(V)you may marvel. ²¹For as the Father ^(W)raises the dead and ^(X)gives them life, so ^(Y)also the Son gives life ^(Z)to whom he will. ²²^(AA)For the Father judges no one, but ^(AB)has given all judgment to the Son, ²³that all may honor the Son, just as they ^(AC)honor the Father. ^(AD)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AE)whoever hears my word and ^(AF)believes him who sent me has eternal life. He ^(AG)does not come into judgment, but ^(AH)has passed from death to life.

²⁵“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^(AI)an hour is coming, and is now here, when ^(AJ)the dead will hear ^(AK)the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear ^(AL)will live. ²⁶^(AM)For as the Father has life in himself, ^(AN)so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. ²⁷And he ^(AO)has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸Do not marvel at this, for ^(AP)an hour is coming when ^(AQ)all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹and come out, ^(AR)those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

³⁰^(AS)“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and ^(AT)my judgment is just, because ^(AU)I seek not my own will ^(AV)but the will of him who sent me. ³¹^(AW)If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. ³²There is ^(AX)another who bears witness about me, and ^(AY)I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. ³³^(AZ)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. ³⁴Not that ^(BA)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. ³⁵He was a burning and ^(BB)shining lamp, and ^(BC)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. ³⁶But ^(BD)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For ^(BE)the works that the Father has given me ^(BF)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, ^(BG)bear witness about me that ^(BH)the Father has sent me. ³⁷And the Father who sent me ^(BI)has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, ^(BJ)his form you have never seen, ³⁸and ^(BK)you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. ³⁹^(BL)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and ^(BM)it is they that bear witness about me, ⁴⁰yet ^(BN)you refuse to come to me that you may have life. ⁴¹^(BO)I do not receive glory from people. ⁴²But ^(BP)I know that you do not have ^(BQ)the love of God within you. ⁴³I have come ^(BR)in my Father's name, and ^(BS)you do not receive me. ^(BT)If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. ⁴⁴How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and ^(BU)do not seek the glory that comes from ^(BV)the only God? ⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, ^(BW)on whom you have set your hope. ⁴⁶For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for ^(BX)he wrote of me. ⁴⁷But ^(BY)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”
