¹⁵ Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous^[a] because I’m generous?’^[b](A)

¹⁶ “So the last will be first, and the first last.”^[c](B)

The Third Prediction of His Death

¹⁷ While going up to Jerusalem,^(C) Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way, ¹⁸ “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.^{(D) 19} They will hand him over to the Gentiles^(E) to be mocked, flogged,^[d] and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”^[e]

Suffering and Service

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached him with her sons.^(F) She knelt down to ask him for something.^{(G) 21} “What do you want?” he asked her.

“Promise,”^[f] she said to him, “that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and the other on your left, in your kingdom.”^(H)

²² Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”^[g](I)

“We are able,” they said to him.

God and Caesar

¹³ Then^(A) they sent some of the Pharisees^(B) and the Herodians^(C) to Jesus to trap him in his words.^{(D) 14} When they came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know you are truthful and don’t care what anyone thinks, nor do you show partiality^(E) but teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes^(F) to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

¹⁵ But knowing their hypocrisy,^(G) he said to them, “Why are you testing^(H) me? Bring me a denarius^[a](I) to look at.” ¹⁶ They brought a coin. “Whose image^(J) and inscription^(K) is this?” he asked them.

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

¹⁷ Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”^(L) And they were utterly amazed^(M) at him.
