15 Don’t I have the right to do what I want with what is mine? Are you jealous[a] because I’m generous?’[b](A)

16 “So the last will be first, and the first last.”[c](B)

The Third Prediction of His Death

17 While going up to Jerusalem,(C) Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.(D) 19 They will hand him over to the Gentiles(E) to be mocked, flogged,[d] and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”[e]

Suffering and Service

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons approached him with her sons.(F) She knelt down to ask him for something.(G) 21 “What do you want?” he asked her.

22 Jesus answered, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?”[g](I)

“We are able,” they said to him.

God and Caesar

13 Then(A) they sent some of the Pharisees(B) and the Herodians(C) to Jesus to trap him in his words.(D) 14 When they came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know you are truthful and don’t care what anyone thinks, nor do you show partiality(E) but teach the way of God truthfully. Is it lawful to pay taxes(F) to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

15 But knowing their hypocrisy,(G) he said to them, “Why are you testing(H) me? Bring me a denarius[a](I) to look at.” 16 They brought a coin. “Whose image(J) and inscription(K) is this?” he asked them.

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

17 Jesus told them, “Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”(L) And they were utterly amazed(M) at him.
