³⁶ “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

³⁷ Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’Deuteronomy 6:5 ³⁸ This is the first and great commandment. ³⁹ A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’Leviticus 19:18 ⁴⁰ The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

⁹ For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,”^[a] “You shall not covet,” Exodus 20:13-15,17; Deuteronomy 5:17-19,21 and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”Leviticus 19:18 ¹⁰ Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.
