Jesus Walks on the Water

22 (A)Immediately he (B)made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, (C)he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When (D)evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way[a] from the land,[b] beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And (E)in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, (F)they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, (G)“Take heart; it is I. (H)Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and (I)walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind,[c] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, (J)“Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, (K)“O you of little faith, why did you (L)doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, (M)the wind ceased. 33 And (N)those in the boat (O)worshipped him, saying, (P)“Truly you are (Q)the Son of God.”

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

34 (R)And when they had crossed over, they came to land at (S)Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent word around to all that region and (T)brought to him all who were sick 36 and implored him that they might only touch (U)the fringe of his garment. And (V)as many as touched it were made well.

Traditions and Commandments

15 (W)Then Pharisees and (X)scribes came to Jesus (Y)from Jerusalem and said, (Z)“Why do your disciples break (AA)the tradition of the elders? (AB)For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded, (AC)‘Honour your father and your mother,’ and, (AD)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,”[d] he need not honour his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have (AE)made void the word[e] of God. (AF)You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:

(AG)“‘This people honours me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (AH)doctrines the commandments of men.’”
