¹⁷ Beware of them, because they will hand you over to local courts^[a] and flog you in their synagogues.^(A)

¹⁸ You will even be brought before governors and kings because of me, to bear witness to them and to the Gentiles.^(A)

²¹ “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.^(A)

²² You will be hated by everyone because of my name.^(A) But the one who endures to the end will be saved.^(B)

² They will ban you from the synagogues.^(A) In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service^(B) to God.

13 And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea.^(A) It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns,^[a](B) and on its heads were blasphemous names.^[b](C)

⁵ The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies.^(A) It was allowed to exercise authority^[a][b] for forty-two months.^{(B) 6} It began to speak^[c] blasphemies against God: to blaspheme his name and his dwelling—those who dwell in heaven. ⁷ And it was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them.^(C) It was also given authority^(D) over every tribe, people, language, and nation.^(E)

The Beast from the Earth

¹¹ Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb,^[a](A) but it spoke like a dragon.

¹² It exercises all the authority of the first beast on its behalf and compels the earth and those who live on it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed.
