The Syrophoenician Woman

^24 (A)Now Jesus got up and went from there to the region of ^(B)Tyre^[a]. And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know about it; and yet He could not escape notice. ²⁵ But after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. ²⁶ Now the woman was a ^[b]Gentile, of Syrophoenician descent. And she repeatedly asked Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. ²⁷ And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not ^[c]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the ^[d]dogs.” ²⁸ But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” ²⁹ And He said to her, “Because of this ^[e]answer, go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” ³⁰ And after going back to her home, she found the child ^[f]lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

The Faith of a Canaanite Woman

^21 (A)Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the region of ^(B)Tyre and ^(C)Sidon. ²² And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, ^(D)Son of David; my daughter is severely ^(E)demon-possessed.” ²³ But He did not answer her with even a word. And His disciples came up and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting ^[a]at us!” ²⁴ But He answered and said, “I was sent only to ^(F)the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” ²⁵ But she came and ^(G)began ^[b]to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” ²⁶ Yet He answered and said, “It is not ^[c]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” ²⁷ And she said, “Yes, Lord; but please help, for even the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” ²⁸ Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, ^(H)your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed ^[d]at once.

^31 (A)Again He left the region of ^(B)Tyre and came through Sidon to ^(C)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of ^(D)Decapolis. ³² And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and had difficulty speaking, and they *begged Him to ^(E)lay His hand on him. ³³ And Jesus ^(F)took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers in his ears, and after ^(G)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva; ³⁴ and looking up to heaven with a deep ^(H)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” ³⁵ And his ears were opened, and the ^[a]impediment of his tongue was ^[b]removed, and he began speaking plainly. ³⁶ And ^(I)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they ^(J)continued to proclaim it. ³⁷ And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even those who are deaf hear, and those who are unable to talk, speak.”

Healing Crowds

^29 (A)Departing from there, Jesus went along ^(B)the Sea of Galilee, and after going up on the mountain, He was sitting there. ³⁰ And ^[a]large crowds came to Him bringing with them those who were limping, had impaired limbs, were blind, or were unable to speak, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and ^(C)He healed them. ³¹ So the crowd was astonished as they saw those who were unable to speak talking, those with impaired limbs ^[b]restored, those who were limping walking around, and those who were blind seeing; and they ^(D)glorified the God of Israel.

Four Thousand Men Fed

8 In those days, ^(A)when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus summoned His disciples and *said to them, ² “^(B)I feel compassion for the ^[a]people because they have remained with Me for three days already and have nothing to eat. ³ And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.” ⁴ And His disciples replied to Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough ^[b]bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” ⁵ And He was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” ⁶ And He *directed the ^[c]people to recline on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve, and they served them to the ^[d]people. ⁷ They also had a few small fish; and ^(C)after He had blessed them, He told the disciples to serve these as well. ⁸ And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large ^(D)baskets full of what was left over of the broken pieces. ⁹ About four thousand ^[e]men were there; and He dismissed them. ¹⁰ And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and came to the region of ^(E)Dalmanutha.

Four Thousand Men Fed

^32 (A)Now Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “^(B)I feel compassion for the ^[a]people, because they ^[b]have remained with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” ³³ The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?” ³⁴ And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” ³⁵ And He directed the ^[c]people to ^[d]sit down on the ground; ³⁶ and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and after ^(C)giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. ³⁷ And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large ^(D)baskets full. ³⁸ And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

³⁹ And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into ^(E)the boat and came to the region of ^(F)Magadan.

Pharisees and Sadducees Test Jesus

16 ^(G)The ^(H)Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and putting Jesus to the test, they ^(I)asked Him to show them a ^[e]sign from heaven. ² But He replied to them, “^[f](J)When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ ³ And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ ^(K)You know how to discern the ^[g]appearance of the sky, but are you unable to discern the signs of the times? ^4 (L)An evil and adulterous generation wants a ^[h]sign; and so a ^[i]sign will not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away.

^11 (A)And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, ^(B)demanding from Him a ^[a]sign from heaven, ^[b]to test Him. ^12 (C)Sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation demand a ^[c]sign? Truly I say to you, ^[d](D)no ^[e]sign will be given to this generation!” ¹³ And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

¹⁴ And the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them. ¹⁵ And He was giving orders to them, saying, “^(E)Watch out! Beware of the ^[f]leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of ^(F)Herod.” ¹⁶ And they began to discuss with one another the fact that they had no bread. ¹⁷ And Jesus, aware of this, *said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? ^(G)Do you not yet comprehend or understand? Do you still have your heart ^[g]hardened? ^18 (H)Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember, ¹⁹ when I broke ^(I)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many ^(J)baskets full of broken pieces you picked up?” They *said to Him, “Twelve.” ²⁰ “When I broke ^(K)the seven for the four thousand, how many large ^(L)baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they *said to Him, “Seven.” ²¹ And He was saying to them, “^(M)Do you not yet understand?”

⁵ And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. ⁶ And Jesus said to them, “Watch out and ^(A)beware of the ^[a]leaven of the ^(B)Pharisees and Sadducees.” ⁷ They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “He said that because we did not bring any bread.” ⁸ But Jesus, aware of this, said, “^(C)You men of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? ⁹ Do you not yet understand nor remember ^(D)the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you picked up? ¹⁰ Nor ^(E)the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets you picked up? ¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you about bread? But ^(F)beware of the ^[b]leaven of the ^(G)Pharisees and Sadducees.” ¹² Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the ^[c]leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the ^(H)Pharisees and Sadducees.
